for me the impressive part is he didn't spent 6 minutes shredding three different instruments, but composed something tasteful that actually justifies the existence of such a monstrosity.
That's what blew my mind, too. Vai used the entire instrument the whole time.

this somehow feels like its from a thousand years in the future and a thousand years in the past, this man truly is a multidimensional being that came to this planet during our time to bless us with mind bending music
You may be more right than you know, because the inspiration for his album "Passion and Warfare" came a LOT from his vivid dreams he had growing up, you hear the ethereal a lot in what he does. Here is one of Steve Vai's quotes ""I had always kept journals, and built the songs around some of the events in these writings. One such event was this other-worldly state of mind I occasionally experienced as a very young child. Lying in a half sleep state, my perception would become very clear. That seems to be the best way to explain it. Sort of a super state of consciousness where everything was as clear as... well, like they say, there are no words.
My ears would be filled with this ringing sound but not quite like a bell. It was more of a toning and it would draw me into it. The closer I let it pull me, the more resonant it became. I was frightened and never let it actually pull me in all the way because the closer I got, the more open my consciousness became and it was somewhat frightening. I was uneasy and unwilling to let myself go. There were visions too but... never mind.
I started to write a book that detailed these other worldly adventures, but other career obligations at that point prevented the completion of the book. Parts were rehashed and turned into a script called Fire Coma and later Fire Garden.
I believe these experiences of heightened awareness come about when the mind is at ease and not motoring from one thing to another. Innovative?? This sounds exactly the same as his sound since the 80s and 90s... And multi-guitars have also been a common thing since the 80s (possibly 70s with Yes/Steve Howe?). This is very skilled, sure, but I don't understand why so many people think it's some pioneering sound. It just isn't and in fact sounds extremely dated.

I'll always remember hearing The Attitude Song in 1984 for the first time. I ran into a friend in Berkeley who had it on a cassette tape. Hearing that forever changed how I played and even looked at what was possible with the guitar.

That's not innovative at all? I mean we've seen Michael Angelo Batio doing double neck stuff but nothing like this. This is definitely treading new ground as far as guitar playing is concerned.

Watch a few videos and you’ll know what I mean. Not a virtuoso for the sake of it, the song always comes first - but man in his technical skill outstrips some of the masters of the past.

Wow! There's something so hypnotic about this performance. I can't imagine how long it would have taken to figure out how to write and play something on this beast, then to turn it into a cohesive performance. Absolutely stunning.

Wasn’t it the other way around, he had something to write and needed Ibanez to build it since years ago. Forgot which interview it was but it’s was definitely regarding the Hydra.
Just read an interview and he said it took him six weeks to learn how to play the Hydra. That's a serious learning curve to work with just to feel comfortable with playing it.

While Knappsack was an incredible piece of music, I enjoyed Teeth of the Hydra much more because the tempo was much slower and it’s not as busy. I could actually hear what he was playing. And what you don’t play is just as important as what you do play sometimes. I could hear the emotions and atmosphere he was trying to create here. Playing a lot of notes really fast doesn’t always create the best piece of music or tell the best story per se. It’s more important than ever, especially in instrumental music, to use the sounds to influence the audience’s state of mind because there aren’t any lyrics. You have to use the sounds to create a mood.
Simply put, I liked the mood I got from Teeth of the Hydra more than the mood I got from Knappsack. Both are excellent. I just like Hydra more. Just my personal preference. If you like Knappsack, that’s cool. There is no right or wrong when it comes to music, just preferences. Have a good one. I’m just glad we can agree than Vai and his music are great.

When I first heard the album, my ears couldn't conceive all the sounds coming from one instrument.
Now that I watch Steve perform it, it's a totally different experience.
That is one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen. Period.

I hear ya on that. This is my favourite track on the album but now seeing him do all that on one guitar, overlapping the instruments, it’s mind bogglingly impressive and Steve just confirms time and again (think knappsack) why he’s the greatest of all time.

Was at his concert in year 2023. What surprised most is that Steve was playing note for note - it is tens of thousands of notes - his compositions, exactly same notes he was playing like 15 years ago and how it sounds in my head. Not a single note was added, removed or changed. It is incredible!

It's so funny, there's so many people these days with multiple neck guitars or 10 times the strings they normally have all doing stuff on RUclips and whatever. Then along comes Steve Vai and shows you how it's really done. This man never disappoints. I'm a drummer and I'm not usually too into guitar stuff, but this guy has mesmerized me since the mid 80's. He was a big part of my childhood and it's nice to see the guy never stopped growing, his ego all seems to be contained within his guitar playing. He never comes off as the absolute legend that he is.

I love that this triple necked monstrosity was used in a fresh, creative, and musical manner without an ounce of novelty present throughout this entire song. I just saw Vai play this last week! Unbelievable until you see him play it and hear the sounds he gets out of it. He is otherworldly. He moves like a dancer, he looks like a model with those gorgeous cheekbones. ❤
Mr Vai is a true example of a genuine musician. No matter what a master can do yesterday, that has nothing to do with reaching for evolution. This man continues to evolve musically and that's incredible. Love to you Mr Vai

First Vai song I ever heard. Just typed in “triple neck guitar” into the search bar after I decided I actually thought multi neck guitars were pretty cool. Stumbled upon a picture of Vai holding the Hydra, and when I finally listened to the song seriously, I was amazed that anyone could do this!
Nowadays, Vai’s the only one I could ever see doing anything like Teeth of The Hydra. I really admire that he still makes incredible music when he’s not exactly a young man anymore, it’s like as he’s aged, his writing and playing has just gotten even better.
I listen to all types of music,I stumble across this and listened to it and wow, first song i herd from him also., Makes me wonder how someone can be so plugged into his instrument.by the way his guitar has 4 sets of strings.

@@buckbreaker5185 Yeah, I saw there’s a video of him playing live at the G3 reunion tour. He does it brilliantly, especially considering the fact that it’s not really at the angle it should be for you to have the most control over it. It’s a massive guitar, but I think it’s probably be easier to play if you didn’t have to basically lean your side over it. So considering he’s at that disadvantage, it’s absolutely awesome that he can play it as well as he does still

Steve is a guitar-god. Prince was similarly multi-talented in many many instruments. He played to my certain knowledge - with expertise - piano, guitar, bass and drums, and may well have been able to play orchestral instruments like woodwinds and brass as well.
He’s outdone himself again! One of the most iconic, creative and talented guitarists ever. Tops on anybody’s list. Love the multi-neck and the bell bottoms just cinched it. Great!!
I have been a Steve Vai fan for years. But when I saw this monstrosity of a guitar, me and my buddy starting chirping it, using jokes about him using it to chop wood, or making it into a coat hangar because nobody could play it. A couple of months later, he releases this video that makes me and my buddy feel like fools for ever doubting him. Steve continues to push the boundary further and further up.
props for sharing. when I first saw it, my reaction was "that thing looks useless". The mistake I was making was it was useless for a conventional guitar player, but def not for Vai. That guy is a-ma-zing.

With this instrument, alternate tunings are key to play all three necks... but then you'd need Vai's skill too and eh, nah... no one gets there.

This is beyond imagination... How could someone possibly think, create and play this guitar or whatever the mighty structure this is. Melodies, chord progression, all those awkward sounds combine in such a fascinating way that from the first moment it takes you in a whirlwind and doesn't stop till the end. Such a masterpiece by the master.
I've been a Vai fan since childhood and it makes me so happy to see the guy still evolving, still experimenting and pushing boundaries. What an inspiration. Thank you for the music Steve. Love you man.

Inside his mouth, on his back teeth are little controls for the lighting and cameras. He’s tonguing all those controls live as he’s playing. Absolutely incredible what this man can do. Truly almost a one man show. He’s just gotta get those nostril controls down for the smoke machine

Man Steve is such a hero and I haven't paid attention to him for awhile because I got listening to other stuff but he is the guy that really blew my beginner mind when I was first learning guitar. He's such a creative player and continues to do some new stuff that isn't quite expected. He's done so much for rock guitar! I've seen him in concert 3 times and was never not blown away. I hope to meet him maybe some day!

I'm a drummer. I do not play guitar. But holy goddamn Jesus Christ shit. That's the most amazing thing I've ever seen. I've always loved Steve Vai as a player. I guess when you're so badass, there's nowhere left to go... you get to this.
It would be wrong to say that Steve is back... because he never left at all. Outstanding performance, watching it made me understand and appreciate to a whole new level this song.

Ya know. I think Steve Vai is the, hands down greatest guitar player/songwriter of his genre that I have ever seen in my life. I'm 58. I just played this video for my wife and as I'm watching him play this song, and I'm going out of my mind with laughter of joy and amazement, when it was over I realized that she didn't care. It didn't do anything for her and that's ok I guess. But I just don't understand how she couldn't even say something as simple as,"Wow! he's really coordinated." I wish I knew some like minded people who I could share my excitement with.
I’m in the same boat, my friend. Music has always been a huge part of my life. Now I’m a going on fifty family man with four college degrees and a wife who don’t give two flips about guitar- other than which ones look nice hanging in the hallway or parked in the living room corner next to an old tweed. It’s a feeling of isolation and loneliness as I long for my tribe. One love, brother.
Come on man, women's minds are not built to appreciate technical mastery hence why nearly ever achieve it. Trying to bond with them over that is going to be a lonely road. Steve I started listening to you when "Flexible" came out and you have surprised, astonished and reached me emotionally in so many different ways over all those years and albums. I have an old high school friend that to this day only has to say the words "Little Green Men" and we both crack smile and chuckle like little kids (we're both in our 60's). Thank you for being the exemplary human and musical explorer that you are. We music lovers are so grateful for all you've given us.
