Ok well mind is blown now so it's time to smoke a fatty and relax on that note.
Rewinding this and digging it even deeper this time.
Thanks for another creation Mr. VAI Sir !
You always raise the bar.. and at the same time break the bars. To not see or hear limits.
subi mas musica con la hydra que esto es una locura 🤯.sos como un dali de la musica bro
I could definitely play like this if I had the guitar I swear!! Just don’t put one in my hands and ask me to play…
for me the impressive part is he didn't spent 6 minutes shredding three different instruments, but composed something tasteful that actually justifies the existence of such a monstrosity.
That's what blew my mind, too. Vai used the entire instrument the whole time.
That’s about the best explanation possible…love it whenever people think outside the box…..
There are 4 instruments
Technically 6 instruments. The 12 string and bass have fretted and fretless parts.
Well said
I'm surprised it doesn't have a full drum set attached to it.

Don't give him ideas. 😂
His career will be limited not by musical ideas or technique but by how much weight he can carry on his shoulders on stage lol
You weren't looking at the back of the guitar(s?), he was playing the drums with his dick and balls that whole time.
The man IS the entire 80's. Just raw power, skill and grace.
this somehow feels like its from a thousand years in the future and a thousand years in the past, this man truly is a multidimensional being that came to this planet during our time to bless us with mind bending music
Bet you didn't know the percussion is being played by his toes, and the fog has been following him around for years. What an artist 👏
and his knee's does the cymbals, his ass plays the sax & the back of his head plays the gong. I can't say what body part plays the triangle :)

I think the top neck’s a twelve string, but it’s extremely impressive though, right?
this is him with only 2 arms, imagine the music he could create if he had all the arms necessary to play all the instruments at the same time
You have never lied, and you have never missed brotha.
His face says it all. Can't tell where he ends and the music begins, it's all one.

Hearing this song first and then seeing it played now, I appreciate it on a whole other level. Awesome work, Steve, you did it again!
I think you are gonna buy this guitar too. Would suit your vintage pedals and amps...Your collection is insane. I would love to see you play this guitar
Hell yea, I personally wouldn't have thought that he'd use all of it at once in one session, but holy shit... he did the job of at least 3 people in one instrument, but hey we're talking about Steve Vai after all, so that shouldn't be too big of a surprise lol
@Music is Win I did the same thing, also, erm, if Gotta Have Rock N' Roll is uh, ever auctioning this, you should do it, lol
Seems he liked your idea of 50-50 neck (half fret half fretless). Has to be nice when your idea inspired players like Vai.
Tyler, I think this is historic.
40 years into his career, constantly innovating and kicking ass. Flawless victory!
I'll always remember hearing The Attitude Song in 1984 for the first time. I ran into a friend in Berkeley who had it on a cassette tape. Hearing that forever changed how I played and even looked at what was possible with the guitar.

Looks like you missed the small harp at the bottom of the instrument :D (Which he was also playing and why he was making wide arcs with his strumming hand).
He even had a full lick across all three necks during the solo.
The track is crap, like most Vai’s tracks
@@manuelpedrosd Love to hear your take there champ, loser

Vai has no ceiling. Always innovative. Forever a legend in the guitar world.
Innovative?? This sounds exactly the same as his sound since the 80s and 90s... And multi-guitars have also been a common thing since the 80s (possibly 70s with Yes/Steve Howe?). This is very skilled, sure, but I don't understand why so many people think it's some pioneering sound. It just isn't and in fact sounds extremely dated.

There are some songs I don't like, but I think his body of work there has to be at least one song you like.
It's so baffling to see someone so far into their career still constantly innovating in ways we never anticipated. Just when you think everything's already been done Steve is always there to prove you wrong.

I wouldn't call this innovating, cause it really doesn't move anything forward. Instead it shows how far one man can push his own talent to even greater heights. This can only be played by the very elite of the masters.
No it felt like he's muddying the waters of what he did in the past.
@@birbdad1842 Never seen someone build like 7 different instruments into one guitar body and play all of them simultaneously, and with the inclusion of semi-fretted-semi-fretless necks on top of that. That's not innovative at all? I mean we've seen Michael Angelo Batio doing double neck stuff but nothing like this. This is definitely treading new ground as far as guitar playing is concerned.
So well said. Unbeleavably good stuff from Mr. Vai.

I never thought that you would ever be here
First Vai song I ever heard. Just typed in “triple neck guitar” into the search bar after I decided I actually thought multi neck guitars were pretty cool. Stumbled upon a picture of Vai holding the Hydra, and when I finally listened to the song seriously, I was amazed that anyone could do this!
Nowadays, Vai’s the only one I could ever see doing anything like Teeth of The Hydra. I really admire that he still makes incredible music when he’s not exactly a young man anymore, it’s like as he’s aged, his writing and playing has just gotten even better.
I listen to all types of music,I stumble across this and listened to it and wow, first song i herd from him also., Makes me wonder how someone can be so plugged into his instrument.by the way his guitar has 4 sets of strings.
He absolutely nails this live too
@@buckbreaker5185 Yeah, I saw there’s a video of him playing live at the G3 reunion tour. He does it brilliantly, especially considering the fact that it’s not really at the angle it should be for you to have the most control over it. It’s a massive guitar, but I think it’s probably be easier to play if you didn’t have to basically lean your side over it. So considering he’s at that disadvantage, it’s absolutely awesome that he can play it as well as he does still
@@williamschettler Never thought Vai would be my thing, but just learning about his career and all he’s done, I can’t help but be inspired, especially by this.

Wow! There's something so hypnotic about this performance. I can't imagine how long it would have taken to figure out how to write and play something on this beast, then to turn it into a cohesive performance. Absolutely stunning.
For Steve it prolly took no time at all. I mean the man basically freestyles the halo theme sing
It took him 50 years to get there, then he made this up in a few hours 🙃
Wasn’t it the other way around, he had something to write and needed Ibanez to build it since years ago. Forgot which interview it was but it’s was definitely regarding the Hydra.
Just read an interview and he said it took him six weeks to learn how to play the Hydra. That's a serious learning curve to work with just to feel comfortable with playing it.
"Sorry Steve, we somehow couldn't find a bass and 2nd guitar player"
- "Fine I'll do it myself!"

YEAH AND HE SAID NO PROBLEM.
I didn’t get to experience the 80’s but through this song I feel like I’m getting a taste of 70’s/80’s greatness - because those were times that electric guitar playing was constantly being challenged and taken to the next level and so many of the great players we all admire were being born. This song and performance is inspiring and captivating and we should all be thankful that Vai is continuing to share with us his uniqueness and unrivaled talent.
First time, I listened with my headphones and was very impressed by the sound and progression of this tune. The second time, I listened while I watched the video. This reminds me of the Star Trek chess board with three levels. I haven’t played it, but it is very impressive. Wow.

It's so funny, there's so many people these days with multiple neck guitars or 10 times the strings they normally have all doing stuff on RUclips and whatever. Then along comes Steve Vai and shows you how it's really done. This man never disappoints. I'm a drummer and I'm not usually too into guitar stuff, but this guy has mesmerized me since the mid 80's. He was a big part of my childhood and it's nice to see the guy never stopped growing, his ego all seems to be contained within his guitar playing. Who needs a band when you're Steve Vai?
Was at his concert in year 2023. What surprised most is that Steve was playing note for note - it is tens of thousands of notes - his compositions, exactly same notes he was playing like 15 years ago and how it sounds in my head. Not a single note was added, removed or changed. It is incredible!
Just when you think Steve Vai has reached the ultimate level, he goes and composes a piece of music that takes the bar even higher. I’m blown away by this performance and don’t really know what else to say.
Idk dude Knappsack was close
@@Matt_Holcomb
While Knappsack was an incredible piece of music, I enjoyed Teeth of the Hydra much more because the tempo was much slower and it’s not as busy. I could actually hear what he was playing. And what you don’t play is just as important as what you do play sometimes. I could hear the emotions and atmosphere he was trying to create here. Playing a lot of notes really fast doesn’t always create the best piece of music or tell the best story per se. It’s more important than ever, especially in instrumental music, to use the sounds to influence the audience’s state of mind because there aren’t any lyrics. You have to use the sounds to create a mood.
Simply put, I liked the mood I got from Teeth of the Hydra more than the mood I got from Knappsack. Both are excellent. I just like Hydra more. Just my personal preference. If you like Knappsack, that’s cool. There is no right or wrong when it comes to music, just preferences. Have a good one. I’m just glad we can agree than Vai and his music are great.

Then again, this is Steve Vai we're talking, here. One of America's greatest musical treasures strikes again as only he can! This is just plain brilliant, and I expect no less from the man.
This Dude is an Alien!!!! Steve is absolutely amazing!!! Sick guitar work and great writer!! 👍 🤟
Steve was such a big influence to me when I started playing guitar when I was little. His musical ability is so inspiring and his creativity just keeps getting better and better.
He is a real rockstar.
Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.
Probably the most remarkable display of musicianship I have ever seen.
And yet this is not a hit tune.

@@nikkinonose9316 MGK is selling more records as of now, whats that tell you about people
It really is! I've watched it so many times - mainly for the visual aspect.
Hear, hear! Also the most remarkable stringed instrument I've ever seen. Bless Steve Vai forever.
I've counted at least five different instruments in this guitar
- Regular guitar
- "Sitar", half fret half fretless
- Bass, half fret half fretless
- Lyre (or kind of)
- Some simple synthesizers
I'm still impressed on how he not only can conduct them all beautifully, but also in how he came up with such BRILLIANT composition!
Long live Steve Vai!
I think what you call a Sitar I'd classify more easterly like a Japanese koto... but I dig where you are coming from. Knowing Steve Vai, he probably meant it to play as both ( if not more) anyway 🤣
that's a 7 string guitar

12-string guitar
7-string guitar
bass (4-string)
harp (13-string)
That little sitar lick was totally bad ass wasn't it!?
@@themightyjse220 I'm mesmerized by it!
It's awesome that he's still alive, and making music. The teacher of Van Halen, RIP FH Astral Realms 💀👻. Shalom.
