It's not a gimmick, its his style. He's always been authentic with his art and it's representative of what he feels. If you don't like what he does then listen to something else. What you commented isn't even constructive criticism, it's pretty much just crapping on the guy for his taste in art, which is biased. Saying he's just gimmicks and no musical content shows me that you just don't get it.
Vai laughs at his own eccentricities... I mean, of course he's playing a "hydra" thing that's crazy beyond comprehension: it's Vai - we should expect it by now. But seriously, if you just hear the song on the album, he recorded each element separately and mixed them nicely, so the record is better than live. But it's required that he perform it live, otherwise the whole thing is a sham... so even though the mix is impossible and Philip is doubling the bass, there's Vai, playing everything simultaneously, night after night on tour... the many videos are proof that he is absolutely the eccentric genius that he paints himself as.
