Oleta’s voice just blows me away. She was meant to be a singer and God gave her a unique voice. Her phrasing is out of this world.

I'm 57 and I still can't listen to this song without getting tears in my eyes and choked up. It's the most spiritual and passionate song I've ever heard. It's beautiful, melodic and has so much meaning to me (I got out of a very bad marriage because of this song). I just simply get lost in it... soooooooo good. My top 5 favorite songs of all time. TFF, top 3 fave bands of mine EVER!!! oxoxoxoxox TFF

What makes this song so amazing is the haunting melodies and harmonies. This is Tears for Fears at their absolute apex. I listen to this all the time and I keep hearing more nuance in each listen. Just so powerful and melodic.

I agree. I've liked this song since I was a toddler. My dad told me when I was around 2-3 I would say chains when I wanted him to play it. I apparently found it calming, and only now do I understand the meaning. Sfill a banger.

I can't figure out the video but I think it's two people in love and it looks like the man is very frustrated that he can't pull his girl out of the digs that she does. He seems angry more at himself that he can't take care of her. That's my take but ya, it's a beautiful video and song that will last out the ages of time to peeps like you and me. God bless you.

Tears For Fears need to get inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame. One of the most underrated, under-appreciated, overlooked groups of our time. Their music is mood-setting, spine-tingling, heart-wrenching, and thought-provoking. Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith are a phenomenal duo! I can never get enough of TFF!
This song in particular is one of my personal favorites by TFF with its profound message and captivating tone. Gives me the chills every time I hear it.

@bleep77 agreed fully they were in fact really huge during the late 80's at the height of their fame and many artists have acknowledged them as influences and covered some of their hits .
I actually believe even ERIC CLAPTON said this is one of the most beautiful songs he had ever heard , we definitely need music and nostalgia like this during these hard times Be safe tonight CHEERS.

This is arguably the best song they ever wrote. It feels like the zenith of what they were after sound wise and it aligns with the darker areas they often went to lyrically. Also, the modulation at 4:43 is so crucial to the lift of this song. It is so big and so wide. I don’t know who’s idea that was but it just sends the song out into the stratosphere.

We are all this song. Our fears, struggles, dreams, frustrations, ups and downs, pain, courage, the search for peace, success and love. There are millions of great compositions but this piece is a timeless work of art. The elements perfectly located, with the perfect presence and with the perfect purpose. When I heard it for the first time, I went into some kind of catatonic state and wondered "Did I just hear the most perfect song ever?" This is one of the most atmospheric and sonic songs I've ever heard; the sound, the mix, its evolution, its history, its outcome. It's just perfect.

This song held my hand and gave me a warm embrace when my Dad was battling cancer and eventually died 10 months after battling it. while I just gave birth to my first born last year. And my Dad never even got to see or hold his 5 week old grandchild in the flesh. This song reminds me of those phases that I went through and somehow helped me cope with that sudden loss. its not even a song he usually listens to, but this reminds me of the time of his death. This song was like a therapist where I can show raw emotions while listening to it. Still listening to this treasure of a song whenever I think about him.Man, I can count the songs that reminded me of him.But this song will always remain special.I miss my Dad Always. I love the comments of people having the strength to leave an abusive relationship from these lyrics. ❤️ I also think one of the brilliant things about this song is how three-dimensional they make the abuse by empathizing with- but not excusing- the ultimate foolishness of the hard culture of masculinity. By not making anyone a caricature- him or her- it always made me feel like it had the power to force men to look at themselves, too. At the end of the video, the man here is realizing that he has to change. And she’s absolved herself of the responsibility of fixing him. How powerful on all counts, the video beautifully and simply captured the depth and complexity of the music and these brilliant lyrics.

A truly beautiful song and performances but what makes this one of the greatest recordings ever made is the exquisite production and arrangement. From that dreamy, hypnotic intro to the beautiful jangly guitar riff, to the crescendo at the end with everyone (including Phill Collins on drums) just killing it! A true masterpiece of pop music

This song is absolutely epic, and it has stood the test of time. 80s music can sound dated, but certainly not here. There is massive production, but it is absolutely perfect and tastefully done. Glorious groove, expressive vocals, complex arrangement, but almost weightless and free - there aren't many songs that pull this off with such style as this. And with Pino Paladino, Manu Katché AND Phil Collins on the drums - what can possibly go wrong? Extraordinaire.

THIS video is such a beautiful duet, as are the meaningful lyrics to it (which are also very relatable to many women around the world)! IDK why but music and lyrics like these mean MORE to me now than when 1st released (i.e. this was back in 1989)! The reason WHY I’m personally so surprised is that I’ve always loved ❤’d and listened to ALL genres of music - from classic rock to opera, and everything in between. Nothing lasting 6:30 touches this song; then and now. NO, NOTHING! The notes. The soulfulness. The rhythm. 4:36 and onward, where music, lyrics, humility, and spirit intersect. And above all, the message: women are an entity to celebrate, never nothing less. This music is a complete, unadulterated masterpiece. A measuring device for this music? It's not on Amazon. It's within one's heart. Even the radio stations were perplexed, had no clue what to do with it. Probably a good thing since most radio songs have a shelf life. This piece? Purely timeless. Thanks Tears.

One of the most unrecognized and unparalleled accomplishments of music collaboration during the 80’s. The vocals in this song are breathtakingly poignant, powerful, and purposeful. The lyrics could have played out in any type of storyline. This video floats across the screen with storyline fades and band moments that capture the musical theatric that is Tear for Fears. Every time i listen to this song it send chills through my body and I feel like I am “flying”. I so wishes that Tears for Fears and Oleta Adams had collaborated further, Still, the album “The Seeds of Love” features many other vocal collaborations on the album. One of the cinematic geniuses of the video is the fact the final production decision to create the video in black and white allows for color of the storyline and epic signature musical production creativity of Tear for Fears to tear through the “boundaries of color” both metaphorical and practically. The brilliance that was Tears for Fears and specifically the song Woman in Chains will always rank as one of the best songs of the 80’s and the brilliant eternal echoing voice of Oleta Adams was by far one of the most powerful and epic signature sounds during the 80’s and 90’s

IMHO, this is TFFs best song. I grew up around selfish, childish men who took advantage of and abused women, which was tragic because the women i knew were the strong ones. This song is just as fresh and meaningful today as it was when first released. In some ways, with all the crap our so called male "leaders" are doing to women's rights, the song is even more consequential now.

I love the story of Roland explaining how they found Oleta Adams! TFF were playing a sold out concert show in Kansas, after the show came back to the hotel, showered and shaved, went downstairs to have some drinks at the hotel bar, had to pay a cover fee of $2.50 per person due to a local musician is playing there tonight named Oleta Adams? Roland stated they had sat at the bar in amazement listening to Oleta, stating it was soulful and she sang with such powerful emotion that some people were emotional enough to shed some tears, as everyone was quiet and tuned into her like no tomorrow. Roland stated her voice was so unique and that TFF needed to bring in that emotion to their band!

This is so, so, deep. And Oleta! What to say about such a crazy gifted woman! This woman will be in my heart forever.
PS: And I appreciate a lot the fact they synchronized the play of the drums with the punches of the man. It's cool.

I recently left my abusive husband, and the line "deep in your heart there are wounds time can't heal" is like a knife in my chest. It is so true and so beautifully written. I love Tears for Fears.

Good for you! If only more people would do what you have done!
No one should be in an abusive relationship! physical or mental.
I have made it my personal mantra to not be around anyone (relationships/friends/family and coworkers) that try to tear me down in anyway. I strive to be an uplifting influence on those around me and I expect it in return. Unfortunately there are people out there that are so broken that they can't see there way out of the negative behaviors towards others. Sadly, you most likely can't change them. Life is too short!
be loved not degraded. You will find someone that wants to put you on a pedastal!!!! Just make sure to show them the same, and never take them for granted!!
Obviously, this song is very meaningful to me as well!

Yes, yes, yes, yes! So good to see people focusing on layers. This song is a masterpiece; in fact, it's the greatest pop song I have heard since the late 80s (no fights please, it's only my opinion). The harmonic progressions, the sounds, the arrangement, the interplay between the feminine and the masculine voices; and of course the layers, starting from the triangles at the beginning till the entrance of the back-beat at 3:30.

I remember when this first came out in 1989. My first boyfriend loved Tears for Fears and bought the Seeds of Love album for the Beatle-esqe title song that hit top 5 on both sides of the pond. I was really only familiar with their smash singles Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Shout so this album was my gateway to TFF fandom. This song is a masterpiece but upon release it just barely cracked the top 40 and got little radio airplay. At 6 and 1/2 minutes it was considered too long and with an extremely long intro. Idk if there's a radio edit but that would ruin the song. Thankfully the video came out and was played extensively on vh1 and gave me my first exposure to Oleta Adams. She was touring with the group as a backup singer and TFF gave her this duet which springboarded her solo career. Anyways this song is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard and deserved to be a #1 single. Also don't sleep on Advice For The Young At Heart either. Another great ballad from the band that also should've been a smash but barely dented the charts.
