This is the song that changed my life. It reflects both personal struggles, and relationship struggles, and I think that's why it's so moving and undeniably beautiful. It doesn't sound like an '87 song, but neither before or after its time either. It's just timeless and immortal and forever in my soul
I've never been a U2 fan.. but my mom just passed away last sunday from a massive stroke. We were playing this song from her phone for her beside the hospital bed because she liked it on her spotify playlist... Now as I hear this I just tear up and miss her dearly. It is a pretty song. If your mom is still around give her a giant hug, because there will be a point in time that you won't be able to again.
The Black Telephone Those of us old enough to remember when the phone was wired to the wall, usually in the kitchen, can relate to this story. I loved this read. When I was a young boy, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember the polished, old case fastened to the wall. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box.. I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother talked to it. Then I discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person. Her name was "Information Please" and there was nothing she did not know. Information Please could supply anyone's number and the correct time. My personal experience with the genie-in-a-bottle came one day while my mother was visiting a neighbor. Amusing myself at the tool bench in the basement, I whacked my finger with a hammer, the pain was terrible, but there seemed no point in crying because there was no one home to give sympathy. I walked around the house sucking my throbbing finger, finally arriving at the stairway. The telephone! Quickly, I ran for the footstool in the parlor and dragged it to the landing. Climbing up, I unhooked the receiver in the parlor and held it to my ear. "Information, please," I said into the mouthpiece just above my head. A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear. "Information." "I hurt my finger..." I wailed into the phone, the tears came readily enough now that I had an audience.. "Isn't your mother home?" came the question "Nobody's home but me," I blubbered. "Are you bleeding?" the voice asked "No, "I replied. "I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts." "Can you open the icebox?" she asked. I said I could. "Then chip off a little bit of ice and hold it to your finger," said the voice. After that, I called "Information Please" for everything. I asked her for help with my geography, and she told me where Philadelphia was. She helped me with my math. She told me my pet chipmunk that I had caught in the park just the day before, would eat fruit and nuts. Then, there was the time Petey, our pet canary, died. I called, "Information Please," and told her the sad story. She listened, and then said things grown-ups say to soothe a child. But I was not consoled. I asked her, "Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers on the bottom of a cage?" She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly, " Wayne , always remember that there are other worlds to sing in." Somehow I felt better. Another day I was on the telephone, "Information Please." "Information," said in the now familiar voice. "How do I spell fix?" I asked All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest . When I was nine years old, we moved across the country to Boston . I missed my friend very much. "Information Please" belonged in that old wooden box back home and I somehow never thought of trying the shiny new phone that sat on the table in the hall. As I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me. Often, in moments of doubt and perplexity I would recall the serene sense of security I had then. I appreciated now how patient, understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy. A few years later, on my way west to college, my plane put down in Seattle . I had about a half-hour or so between planes. I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my sister, who lived there now. Then without thinking what I was doing, I dialed my hometown operator and said, "Information Please." Miraculously, I heard the small, clear voice I knew so well. "Information." I hadn't planned this, but I heard myself saying, "Could you please tell me how to spell fix?" There was a long pause. Then came the soft spoken answer, "I guess your finger must have healed by now." I laughed, "So it's really you," I said. "I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during that time?" "I wonder," she said, "if you know how much your calls meant to me. I never had any children and I used to look forward to your calls." I told her how often I had thought of her over the years and I asked if I could call her again when I came back to visit my sister. "Please do," she said. "Just ask for Sally." Three months later I was back in Seattle . A different voice answered, "Information." I asked for Sally. "Are you a friend?" she said. "Yes, a very old friend," I answered. "I'm sorry to have to tell you this," She said. "Sally had been working part time the last few years because she was sick. She died five weeks ago." Before I could hang up, she said, "Wait a minute, did you say your name was Wayne ?" " "Yes." I answered. Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down in case you called. Let me read it to you. The note said, "Tell him there are other worlds to sing in. He'll know what I mean." I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant. Never underestimate the impression you may make on others. Whose life have you touched today?
This is my favorit song of U2 ! I still sing it now that i have 48 years old ! I became a singer/musician and writer... and U2, you have been with me all the way through the storms in my life... Thank you for your talent.
I never seem to stop feeling surprised at how ahead of its time this song was. The way they put together the instruments, Bono's vocals. Ohhhh and the way thr main guitar riff comes in is just...indescribably perfect.
This is unarguably the absolute best song U2 ever released, extending far past a troubled heartache. . . It speaks volumes about the unwanted responsibilities faced during young adulthood. I turned 18 exactly one decade AFTER this song was released (via their 5th studio album, The Joshua Tree). Now, 17 years later (post 1997) the song lyrics only further reiterate the song’s deeper meaning. . . Nothing in this life is easy. The older one becomes, there are only that many more hardships he/she must face & overcome.
Dad made me listen to this song 2 years ago. A year ago, i bought a car for my family. I don't think I've seen my father so happy in a while when I got him the car. We went on a short trip in our new car. On the way back, i played this song in the car. Mom and sister were sleeping, the driver was driving, and my father was enjoying my selected songs, nodding his head in the front seat, i remember i played this song and the moment was so beautiful. It felt so good to see him enjoying , relaxing on a peaceful drive to home after working so hard all these years for me. My dad passed away 2 months back. This song will forever remain special to me now.

This is one one of the most beautiful rock ballads ever composed. Bono has complete control of his voice using it masterfully building the emotion of the song. He holds his voice back, straining against the shackles he has placed on it. Then he breaks free of his bonds and lets his voice soar. It is just superb.
That poignant whistling synth with that steady syncopated bass line plays so smoothly with Bono’s raspy vocals, that build up to an incredible hook. Great track.
I’ll never forget hearing this for the first time in 1987. I was 12, just finished my homework, turned on my little radio and boom! Have loved Bono and the band forevermore.
This is hands down one of the most AMAZING songs ever written. EVERYTHING about it moves me. It's like a classic black dress with a strand of pearls; It never goes out of style!
The relentless bass line and drums, Edge's guitar artistry and Bono's gut wrenching passion - all these elements create a whole greater than the parts. You cannot turn away from this song.
You cannot turn away from this song. It has a throbbing nature which the dum, dum, dum of the bass. Then there is Bono with his ‘with or without you’. It is very much a low thuzz that tickles the brain and then the drums kick in and I find my heart prolapses and I am an open empty mess on the floor. And i know they won’t be happy, but this is me. With or without you
Everything in this song is absolute perfection... The growing intensity, the deepness of Bono's voice going to despair as he interprets the lyrics, The Edge's reverberating poetry, the beats becoming more and more powefull as the song goes and Adam's bass defining the identity of the song... This song tears my heart out,,,cuts it into little pieces...throws it all together in a bowl...stirs the bowl as he walks away...concerned look ...then a careful smile...unsure of the implications.
2 months ago my father introduced me to this song and I listened to it every day by my side and I didn't give it any importance. This morning my father passed away and this song has been my comfort, enjoy this work of art.
The Joshua Tree is genuinely one of the greatest albums ever written. I wore the needle down on my record player when my mum bought the album for my 19th birthday in 1987. EVERY song makes you feel incredible.
🎯 Remember the media's astroturfed backlash against them for having a song on an ipod? 🙄 U2 didn't deserve that manufactured backlash...Bono got the IMF debt forgiven for 3rd world countries for chrissakes. The economist Michael Hudson calls the US the loan shark of the world using IMF/World Bank to strip nations of their assets. Long live Bono's debt cancellation jubilee! The real jubilee is debt jubilee & land re-distribution. The original Summarian bible said: debt forgiveness and land re-distribution ie debt jubilee, Leviticus 25, prior to the Greek translation. Western civilization is the first civilization to eschew this (Michael Hudson). "Civilization is madness." - Freud "Can't see the right road when the roads are paved." - Bob Marley from Concrete Jungle, African Herbman
This song is a master piece, from Bono's vocals to Adam's bass, Larry's drums, and of course the Edge's guitar riffs, there will never be anything like this song.
I've always thought this song has one of the best executed slow builds to a climax. The vocal performance and all the instruments too - it all just comes together perfectly.
Hey there - How aol r u as I've been having the same opinion since 1987 - I listen to this track at least 4 times a day since then.....OMG it is so brilliant!!!
Nothing hits better than listening to this song while driving down a back road on a summer evening, windows down, somehow it smells nostalgic outside - kinda like your childhood, the music is blasting and your singing as you drive along watching the sunset 🌇
Today’s music is about grabbing some good looking teenager off the street and let them “sing” to words that have no meaning. They don’t need to be good singers cause there is auto-tune (Bieber!) sad state of music currently
It was a perfect storm of talent from the band and "the mix wizard" behind the top noch mix table (that produce that extra magic you hear but are always neglected or forgoten...) and all the real analog and digital music gear etc., giving us timeless masterpiece.
Larry is the heartbeat of U2. Man, just listen to those drums! This song came out the summer I turned 13, and I couldn’t believe my ears or eyes. I’m still in utter awe.
Played this while I was driving, probably more than ten years ago. My dad, sitting next to me, just asked me who was that singer with such an incredible voice. I'll remember those words everytime I play it now
There are not many songs that stop you in your tracks and you have to stop whatever you are doing just to listen until the end. This is one of those songs.Almost puts you in a trance. Such a great song.
Poor little black girl from Baltimore city and as a teenager U2 music found me. I’m now a 53 yr old woman laying in my bed right now zoning to all of U2 music . Music has no color when it’s just great and timeless ✌🏾
I am a white bloke, I was born in a slum in Northern England. My surname is Irish. Irish blood then. I have a few years on you but we're a similar vintage. Your last sentence is true and beautiful. Bless you sweet child of this world. Bono became a bit odd, but this era was amazing. Peace and love to you. May I call you Sister ?
As a 6 year old kid i sat on the backseat from my fathers car. He always listened to songs of U2. Now 23 years later still listening to these kind of songs. Love it!
I'd be honored if some U2 fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of PURPLE RAIN by Prince and PRAYING FOR TIME by George Michael on my YT channel in tribute to 2 of the greatest vocalist-songwriters in music history. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and RESPECT to the legends.
I remember hearing U2 for the first time travelling on a train in Normandy France. It was a rainy stormy day and this song came on a traveller’s boom box. I’ve been a fan ever since.
Legends . This song will be listened to in a hundred years and after a thousand years

Timeless classic. Nothing like a U2 classic
That bass ride is one of the most emotional in history of music
How can a song bring joy, a sense of being haunted, a sense of sadness, and a sense of contemplation all at the same time? U2 does it with this song.
The complexity of real artists.

This is the definition of Love and Heartbreak in musical form. Absolute timeless classic. Still gives me chills.

This song tears my heart out,,,cuts it into little pieces...throws it all together in a bowl...stirs the bowl as he walks away...concerned look ...then a careful smile...unsure of the implications.
I am twelve years old and I am very grateful to my father for introducing me to this type of music.
Roxana baby you are blessed. Enjoy the ride, it's amazing!!!❤

Timeless classic.

This is one of a handful of songs that gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it.
2 months ago my father introduced me to this song and I listened to it every day by my side and I didn't give it any importance. This morning my father passed away and this song has been my comfort, enjoy this work of art.
My condolences. Worth listening to live performances of it such as 1987 rattle and hum and 1993 Sydney.

The Joshua Tree is genuinely one of the greatest albums ever written. I wore the needle down on my record player when my mum bought the album for my 19th birthday in 1987. EVERY song makes you feel incredible.

Das hören unsere Nachkommen in 100 Jahren noch.
The buildup is just incredible. They have such amazing songs, definitely an iconic style.
I wish they brought back another buildup and Ohs to end it. So powerful I want to hear it again ;)
That’s what I love about this song. The instruments and vocals just keep getting more intense and the chorus and verses are never completely the same.
This song unites all of us to be honest. Even with the pandemic, this song makes all of us Brothers and Sisters.
This song gave me chills when I first heard it. It still does.
70s 80s in Miami north Miami.
Indeed dont be a mess, bless
I first heard it in 9th grade. It gives me chills everytime I hear it.
"Civilization is madness." - Freud
"Can't see the right road when the roads are paved." - Bob Marley

Yes me too I own The Joshua Tree cd I am so glad everyone loves my music.
If you ever experienced the “with or without you” feeling consider your self lucky and be grateful for such a beautiful experience.
Just can’t believe how awesome the 80’s were. Everybody in high school had this album.
Lucky you! I'm 16 but stuck in the 80's and 90's rock songs... Damn i wish i was there when the true music was created
Indeed..80s decade of pure music and environment.
@@norismarshahsidek246 totally agreed! And not forgetting the 90's... How i wish i could feel the vibe of the 80's and 90's 😭

@@davideley7253 I was 13 when this came out in 87 & I agree with you, brilliant!

Yes, guitar section is so so well done. Monumental song. 🔥
Agree, I'm not a musician. But the slow building momentum of the song is awesome.
Love the breakdown on the drums. So satisfying

My mother was in her 70s and she loved this song! Thinking about you tonight, Mommy!❤

Essa música é arrepiante de tanta emoção que ela nos dá.
Definitely hits hard to this day. Classic.
Nothing hits better than listening to this song while driving down a back road on a summer evening, windows down, somehow it smells nostalgic outside - kinda like your childhood, the music is blasting and your singing as you drive along watching the sunset 🌇

It's simply timeless. 1000 years from now it will still be just as moving.
I hope so to show our history
80s and 90s song canot be compared to the song today because its much cooler than today period.
You should check out the band ‘The Inhaler’ Bono’s son is in the band too and I must say, it gives me the 90’s vibes.
Totally recommend it.
Today’s music is about grabbing some good looking teenager off the street and let them “sing” to words that have no meaning. They don’t need to be good singers cause there is auto-tune (Bieber!) sad state of music currently

U2 have so may wonderful songs. This classic was one of the first tracks that really got me into them. Probably in their top 10 best.
One of the most haunting melodic songs ever written. Beautifully mastered .
It was a perfect storm of talent from the band and "the mix wizard" behind the top noch mix table (that produce that extra magic you hear but are always neglected or forgoten...) and all the real analog and digital music gear etc., giving us timeless masterpiece.

@@tomaszsidor603 Yes ...
The song is fine but had to be remastered, cause Bono just can't sing. Tragic but true.
With or without Norma
Larry is the heartbeat of U2. Man, just listen to those drums! This song came out the summer I turned 13, and I couldn’t believe my ears or eyes. I’m still in utter awe.
@@rogergui1980 I was there in 1987. I was only 13 that year. This song was so unique.
