Always been a Sting fan, but more so as when my wife and I had some difficult years before getting together before I retired, a close friend gave us this song as 'our song' and it has been so ever since, and Ive had the privilege on a number of trips to be able to perform this to audiences, and especially dedicate it to her... Sting will no doubt go down as one of the greatest composers/songwriters of his musical era. And that's to say nothing of his unmatched vocal chops and iconic bass playing.
He was one of the greatest song writers of his era. He had an instantly recognizable voice supremely suited to his songwriting. But his bass playing was pretty middling. There are plenty of jazz bass players who make Sting look like an amateur. Paul McCartney is much more accomplished on the bass. Listen to Paul’s baselines over the later Beatles albums and you’ll hear a master. That said, Sting still is one of the greatest entertainers of all all time.
