I'd be honored if some Sting fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal RUclips performances of ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK and WHY SHOULD I CRY FOR YOU in tribute to the master of lyricism and composition. Today is Saturday, Jan.18, 2025.
I am a 76 senior woman, Mother of 5 children & Granny of 4 grandchildren...
But this Sting's evergreen makes me happy smiling & appreciating this song in every single aspect - though I am NOT any musician - only a 7year attending student and a graduant of basic music school here, in Bratislava, Slovakia - cca 63- 70 years ago... 😂 And I simply love or feel any kind of a good music - inspired from some heavenly sphere and coming out to our earthly world through a Man's or a Woman's heart and touching other hearts...
From heart to heart 💞 THANKS to God, our common Cosmic/Heavenly Parent/Father&Mother/2in1...

One of the best songs ever written. Elegance, style, jazz, saxophone, lyrics, black and white video. I always ask myself how is it possible to make a song with sophisticated melody like this, when there is a melody inside other melodies and in the end we have a masterpiece.Sting has a total musical taste , his songs are the best, Fields of gold, Seven days, When we dance, It’s probably me, Shape of my heart, They dance alone, Roxanne.
And of course there are so much more. We can count and count. I love him, his music stays with me during all my life.

It is important to notice that this song is about Quentin Crisp (who is the guy that appears on the clip !). He was an English gay icon who emigrated to the United States in 1981. During the war, he was declared exempted because he was gay ; in the US he was occasionally attacked by people for his sexual orientation, but he never seemed to fight back. The song gains deepness when you realize that

Branford Marsalis gets plenty, no worries- he is a very well respected. If you listen to the rest of this album, you can hear more of him, and how much fun he and Sting had creating songs together (along with some other musical geniuses). There's even a funny beginning to Shadows In The Rain where he says "Wait, wait- what key is it in?"

After the war in the Balkans, my parents and I found ourselves homeless in a foreign country, sleeping in the back of a truck and just trying to survive. It was during that time, as a child, that I first heard this song, and it instantly connected with me. It captured everything I felt in that moment-lost, confused, and most importantly like I didn’t belong. And even now, more than 30 years later, that feeling hasn’t left me, as I still feel like a stranger. Today, my life is very different. I have a PhD, a wife, two kids, and a comfortable life. But no matter how much has changed, I still find comfort in the little things that tie me to my past-like eating Bosnian burek once a month or visiting my hometown once a year. And then, every time I return here, the same feeling returns... I’ve realized that no matter how much time passes or how much I accomplish in this country, there will always be a part of me that feels like I’m caught between two worlds. And this songs captures is so good... Thank you Sting.

The elderly English gent in the video was Quentin Crisp, who suffered a lot of ignorance and was victimized, but never vengeful, only polite. He was an openly gay man, and the author of The Naked Civil Servant, among other books; he was often reviled and persecuted as a young man, and he moved to NYC for his older years. I worked for his literary agent and had the pleasure of meeting him once and talking with him on the phone many times.

I don't listen music a lot, but Stings songs I always love to hear, because they are real, like listening to his soul singing...
Don't think Sting will ever read this, but THANK YOU Gordon for "being your self, no matter what they say"!
You are 70 already! I hope you will stay with us as much as you want, but time is relentless

@@pup1008 yes, but we are still sore about WOrld War 1 and 2 here in England. I am xenophobic. I fear foreigners. Particularly Germanic people. Not really bad racism. Just wary of that culture. So it's likely. I did not pay much attention in German class.
Guten Morgan. Guten Tag Hola! Bein Nuit.
Like in English: pardon in French: Pardon?
But, in German the words are quite different from English. Due to the Roman Empire, I thought. Where The Goths, invaded Italy, from the North. Destroying the Roman Empire.
As with The British Empire. We were dogged by The Germans, maybe fighting for their dinner.
I only met 3 or 4 Germans in my whole life. But there's loads of Polish here in England. I am interested to listen to foreign media.
I enjoyed watching Despacio. The Spanish song.

I know exactly what you mean. A lot of the stuff that comes out is processed to death and just rubbish in my ears and/or is more about an artist's image than sound. Some music is definitely decent but I don't think this type of musicality that was abundant in the charts from the 60s till the 90s will have a resurgence in the foreseeable future...

The fact that it took this long for a label like Frontiers Records to step up and actually bring back some classic rock/pop back to the West proves that the industry is permanently crippled. Music has been homogenized and cheapened to hell and back, and the general consumers have simply lapped it up without any regard for musicianship. It's just a crowd mentality that sadly persists to this very day. Very disheartening.

    • @michaelarcher1577
      @michaelarcher1577 8 лет назад +8

Music now involves tons and tons of marketing, as was discovered in the 80's or maybe even before. Cyndi Lauper had one great PR machine behind her for the time, but she also put out great music. Now, all you need is a great PR machine to succeed which is why shitty rap artists are a dime a dozen. They all make use of the "G.O.A.T." mentality to make themselves known.
And the general consensus for music nowadays is that people think it's processed shit, they just don't bother to broaden their horizons and *seek out* music rather than let it fall into their lap. Crowd mentality will never get old, and good musicians must know how to work that crowd to their advantage, just like how punk rock became a lifestyle.
And music is evolving, going through a shitty phase. I look forward to music in the future.

In the late '80s, when the Soviet Union was cracking at the seams, music came rushing through those cracks. Western music. And amidst this polyphony, I discovered Sting, Billy Joel, Leonard Cohen, Simon and Garfunkel, and many others. You listen to music, look at Sting of the 80s and realize that life is as fleeting as an Englishman's walk in New York City
