      I love booth trucks, and the Maverick is so appealing for basic tooling around the house. But as with most Ford (I'm on my second Ford), the suspensions fade away after about 65k miles, whereas the Honda will go for 150K miles with nothing more than oil changes. So yes, the Honda costs more upfront, but in the long run, you'll make up for the cost, and the resell value will be there.

    Ridgeline interior is way more spacious- just look at the size and width of the center console compared to all of the other midsize trucks. I went with Ridgeline. I also like the taller ride height and reliability of the Ridgeline. The Ridgeline conquered this segment two decades ago while other manufacturers are just now joining the game with the Ford Maverick and the Hyundai Santa Cruz. Ridgeline has perfected their vehicle while others are still relatively new and working out kinks

      Maverick is more spacious than most midsize trucks too. In fact, it has an inch more front legroom and just 1 inch less in the rear compared to the Ridgeline. And Ford is on track this year to sell three times as many Mavericks as Honda is Ridgelines, so I'd argue that it's Honda who hasn't worked out the kinks when it comes to what the market wants.

    The local Honda dealer had a Maverick I was interested so I went and gave it a whirl. It was a 23 with about 5k miles. Maybe it was an anomaly, but the transmission was jerking the truck around so I didn’t buy it. For shits and giggles, I drove a ridgeline. That’s the one I brought home. Over about a similar 10 mile rest route, the Ridgeline drove better, was more comfortable, and much smoother. I bought the ridgeline, for considerably more money, because it’s a considerably better rig.

    Another top notch review Ben. I got a 2023 Ridgeline RTL-E (fully loaded) in mid-January - just a few Thousand more than the Maverick. RL has nicer interior, quieter ride and the engine is super smooth and very muted in most driving conditions. The Maverick looks kinda dinky in person and the upper trims are saddled with dealer markups. I guess the Maverick Hybrid would have the upper hand in MPG but again, hard to find and dealer markups make it a no go.

    As for the vehicles, if people love them, then I'm glad to hear it, but those shifters are putting me off. I've long used and prefer a clutch shifter in the center. I was considering a Ridgeline as a backup if I can't get a Frontier, but if all the models in recent years have button shifters, then maybe that isn't a deal breaker for me, but it doesn't help either.

    • @deanmay338
      @deanmay338 2 месяца назад +2

      Yup, the Ridgeline, Santa Cruz, and Maverick are unibody pickups. However, like most midsize trucks, the Ridgeline offers a 5’ bed and the Maverick only 4.5’ and the Santa Cruz’ 4’. The Tacoma and Frontier only offer the 6’ bed as an option and don’t have the payload to back it up for my needs. This Ridgeline has 1,477 lbs of payload (the Ridgeline Sport has 1,583 lbs of payload before options). This Maverick only has 1,148 lbs of payload. A deal breaker for me. I tow a small camper and haul camping gear. Payload is critical variable for me. In addition, the Ridgeline offers power consistent with the Jeep Gladiator (another midsize truck). It is probably class leading in terms of its interior/cabin space relative to other midsize trucks. Sure, the Ridgeline is built like the Santa Cruz and Maverick, but it is the size of a midsize truck and has many of the capabilities of a midsize truck. I don’t own any midsize truck yet, but plan to buy one at the end of this year to tow our camper and haul camping gear. I am not the least bit brand loyal. I want around 1,500 lbs of payload. I looked at a GMC Canyon 4WD Elevation today. It had 1,568 lbs of payload. Nice! A Ridgeline Sport has 1,583. I have yet to look at a ‘24 Tacoma with more than 1,200 lbs of payload. The Frontier, another nice truck, also lacks in real world payload relative to the Ridgeline. In any case, I see the Ridgeline competing nicely with other midsize trucks even though it has a unibody design similar to the smaller Maverick and Santa Cruz. BTW, the Santa Cruzes are cool. And, I am a Maverick fan. Would love a Maverick Hybrid that as a daily driver and also flat towable behind a motorhome. However, for towing a small trailer like mine, I would choose the Ridgeline, particularly with its payload capabilities.

    • @plmn93
      @plmn93 2 месяца назад

      @@deanmay338 Most Mavericks have a payload of around 1500 pounds. The Tremor reduces payload and towing...but then the Ridgeline doesn't really offer anything comparable to it. The Ridgeline's interior is wider compared to the Maverick, but the legroom is a wash. The biggest difference of course is that the Maverick pricing ends where the Ridgeline's begins. The Ridgeline is nicer, but you pay for that.

    Maverick is just to small to be really called a truck. The Ridgeline is already a small truck, the Maverick only has a 2k lbs tow rating at the base option and is smaller (shorter) than some sedans. Compare that to a RAV4 (subcompact SUV) and with the Adventure trim/higher you get a tow rating of 3.5k lbs. The Maverick is really just for guys with a truck ego, to pretend that they have a truck. I would go Ridgeline, Frontier or Ranger if I wanted a small somewhat capable truck.

      We went to look at a Ridgeline last weekend and overall were impressed with the package (Trailsport). The back seat is somewhat bolt upright, but plenty of room inside and seats are comfy. As for the Honda N/A V-6 engine's reliability, it does have a timing belt, not a timing chain so that is a major expense maintenance-wise that needs to be factored in plus cylinder deactivation was added in that can be problematic. I'm not saying I'd choose the Maverick for this alone, but it doesn't have a timing belt or cyl. deactivation to contend with.

    • @heart4Pahoa
      @heart4Pahoa 2 месяца назад +1

      @@plmn93 My observance and point is that a NA engine is going to have a better chance of longevity over any turbo engine. Turbos get hot, use more oil and generally require a cool down if pushed hard. If you don’t let the oil cool down and you shut the engine off, that oil burns up the additives and turns to sludge. So you have to constantly be checking your oil and you MUST change your oil sooner and at the noted intervals. Most working people who have not been exposed to turbo equipped engines are going to be seeing some expensive repairs in their future because there is no grace with PMs and monitoring of your oil based cooling.

    The biggest issue I have with the Ridgeline is that it's rated for the same fuel economy as my F-150. It is also pretty much the same as its competition which comes with bigger tires and more ground clearance. The Maverick is successful because it's what people expect in a unibody pickup. Affordable and efficient. Most people don't care that it's a "fake truck" if it doesn't have the downsides of a "real truck".

    • @owequitit
      @owequitit 2 месяца назад +1

      Except real world it isn’t the same and the data clearly bears that out. Turbo engines do differentially better on the EPA test because the test cycle keeps them out of boost.
      Fuelly puts the Ridgeline clearly ahead on MPG versus the F-150.

    • @plmn93
      @plmn93 2 месяца назад

      @@owequitit Let's look at those numbers. Ridgeline averages about 20.5. F-150 with the latest 2.7 from 2018 up averages about 18.5. That is 2 MPG better for the truck that is much smaller, much less capable, has much lower ground clearance, much smaller tires, 45 less HP and 140 less ft/lbs of torque. It also doesn't factor in that F-150s are more likely to be hauling heavier loads and can be optioned all the way up to 5700 pounds curb weight.
      If you are still impressed with the Ridgeline's economy given all that, I don't know what to tell you. My F-150 is averaging over 4 MPG better than my last one that had the 5.4 V8 while performing significantly better, so to imply that turbos are designed for the EPA cycle and not the real world is simply not true.

    • @owequitit
      @owequitit 2 месяца назад +1

      @@plmn93 I’ve looked at the numbers and they are clear. The Ridgeline averages about 15% better FE. Only a biased fanboy would try to pretend that is insignificant.
      Further, capability aside, the majority of that data is unladen trucks on both sides because t the F-150 is primarily used as a commuter by most people, as is the Ridgeline.
      That said, the Ridgeline doesn’t do nearly as poorly as you continue to assert from video to video. Pulling full weight cars, I have averaged around 16-17MPG at western speed limits up 6% grades over long distances. Full payloads in the bed have little to no effect on MPG, just like the F-150.
      Don’t forget that the F-150 data has a much higher % of 2WD vehicles included in it.
      Further, the Ridgeline is more maneuverable, easier to park, fits in a garage much better, and rides and handles much better than an F-150. The fact that it comes with a 15% FE improvement is simply a plus. People are largely NOT buying a midsize for MPG, that is simply a specific data point you guys have chosen to zoom in on and emphasize because you can twist it to your bias. It was literally a non-consideration when I bought a midsize. I bought the midsize primarily because I wanted the smaller size and better maneuverability. I don’t use it for work, and they were capable of towing what I needed to tow, which is about 5,000lbs.
      The F-150 is a good truck and if I needed a full-size, it would have been between an F-150 or Tundra. But I didn’t need that much truck and I didn’t want to accept the tradeoffs required in choosing one. The Ridgeline is super easy to drive, works better as a DD, parks easier, handles better, gets better MPG and has performance pretty close to the base model engines on the full-size trucks (they have more power, but are also larger and heavier).
      It will tow 5,000lbs all day long with no issues and it will carry the full 1500lbs of payload with no issues. I can put 3 dirtbikes in the bed, can carry 4x8 flat and can sleep in a queen bed in the bed.
      Didn’t want a full size and didn’t need a full-size. It’s like a hammer. I am not going to use a framing hammer to break concrete and I am not going to use a sledge hammer to fix jewelry.
      Funniest part is that I used to make fun of them too, and then through circumstance I was ended up test driving one. After that, the choice was super easy and I realized how under-rated it was. At that point I didn’t care what people thought. I just think it’s funny to see all the same people running from video to video trying to secure their ego because it is fragile and a truck they have no intention of buying is somehow a threat to them.

      @@owequitit Sorry, only a biased fanboy would claim 15% difference is significant given the difference in size and capability. Again, I'm not making fun of the Ridgeline and think it's a good truck. But it's not for everybody and those are the reasons that I feel that it has always been an also-ran in the midsize truck segment. The excuse given by fanboys for two decades now has been that truck buyers are too vain and stupid to realize what an awesome truck it is but the Maverick has proven that is not the case. It simply has never been what most truck buyers want. Again, if you like it, great. If I didn't have three kids and spend time in the woods I would likely be driving one myself. But it wasn't quite big enough and didn't have enough ground clearance for my needs.

      @@plmn93 nope sorry, a 15% bonus is a significant amount whether you like it or not.
      Not a single person would turn away a 15% improvement in MPG and we both know the highway number is bigger. Check out his Trailsport 1 week review video. He was over 25MPG.
      An F-150 isn’t for everyone either, which is why the midsize segment exists in the first place.
      I have two kids in car seats and they fit fine and with careful line selection, it will do forest roads just fine. Wish Honda had put more underbody protection and ground clearance, on that I agree. However, easily remedied in the aftermarket.

    There is no Maverick in existence that will ever last as long as an RL. I currently have a 21 RTLE. Had a 06 RL. I've had all sizes of pickups from a B2000 to a Hemi RAM. Sometimes I think the 84 B2000 was the best.
    The 21 RTLE is a near perfect vehicle with an outstanding highway ride.

    Dial shifter vs weird button shifter - I'll take the dial shifter. Reliability of the turbo 4 vs the NA 6 - I'm sure the V6 is longer-lasting (I have a non-Ford vehicle and had to replace the turbo with less that 33K miles on it two weeks ago - a stuck wastegate, so I'm a little jaded about turbos). Still, the Maverick for the win.

    I have a rigedline 2023, and the truth is that the Maverick is smaller inside and out, the Ford engine is not so reliable.

      The 2.0 actually is reliable, and the Honda 3.5 is not without issues itself.
