I’ve had my Maverick for a little over 3 months. It’s a AWD XLT ecobeast. I’m about to roll over 10k miles. I live in Midwest and it’s done everything I bought it for. It handles pretty decent in inclement weather. The continental tires are good highway tires but are subpar in snow etc. I work for the railroad and I travel a 100 miles a day and use it to haul odds and ends stuff. I have a family of 4 that easily fits in it if needed. No you’re not gonna haul 10k lbs or tow a house with it but just for running around and hauling smaller stuff it’s perfect and with today’s fuel prices it was a win. In my opinion, these are more like the old Rangers. So if you liked the older rangers, you’d probably like these.
They should've called this the ranger. I wasn't impressed with the newest ranger. I thought it was too big. I've ordered this maverick in November and im just excited to get this truck! I'm barely getting around in my 2000 ranger. Haha
I work for the railroad too and was thinking about getting this for my work vehicle. I’ve had bad luck with new cords though so I’m not sure. I miss my old ranger
I work at HSAP where this car and the Bronco Sport are made. Both models have been so well accepted by customers that we are working overtime to meet the demand.
I have a 2015 VW Golf I purchased new and was dismayed to find out it was made in Mexico as I thought I was purchasing a German car. 110,000 miles later it’s needed no repairs, runs like a dream, and doesn’t even rattle over bumps. I think the Mexican autoworkers know what they’re doing and I’d trust them wholeheartedly. My “Deutschland” built BMW gave me more problems in 20,000 miles than this car ever has!
I work with the Park Rangers in California and this truck can HANDLE. We just got three of these and I thought it wouldn’t be able to climb trails and drive down rocky paths as well as the bigger pickups, but it’s proven me wrong. Great power delivery and MPG.
I got my Mav XLT hybrid 360 lux alto on Jan 21, ordered June 18, at msrp $27,050 plus a $85 doc fee from my dealer 3 miles away. With tax lic slightly over $29k.
Honestly, I can't wait to get this truck in a few years on the used market. A fuel efficient small truck would be much more practical for me than any other. I hope it does well and opens up a market for trucks this size. A tiny Toyota Tacoma hybrid would be perfect
I've owned a 2022 Maverick, with the eco boost engine, for three months and I'm very happy with the truck so far. The bed is only four and a half feet long, but the tailgate is designed to lock in place at the same level as the wheel well, which allowed me to easily carry three sheet of plywood home from Home Depot.
I just got my 2024 yesterday. You don’t have to use the start stop feature. Turns off with a push of a button on the arm console. All its features are very customizable. Very nice ride and very quiet. When I turned the key I didn’t think it started. Very impressed on my first ride.
My 2006 Lincoln Zephyr was built in Mexico. Bought it new. Approaching 300K miles. Best car I ever had. I don't usually keep a car over 5 years but this17 year car is still going strong.
I've had my XLT AWD FX4 with 4k tow for a week now. Really love it! Quick, light handling and handles like my Mustang did. Very sure footed in the wet or dry. GREAT AWD system. First tank got almost 29 mpg in mixed driving. And up to 34 mph hiway on back roads. I will admit I'm the old guy in the right lane doing the speed limit. Drive like a angry youngster and YMMWV! ;-) But its an awesome vehicle for a grandpa with errands to run.
Was really looking hard at getting an xlt with awd and the 4k package. Love the idea of the maverick. Decided I didn't want a car payment and bought an old 96 ranger and now I'm in love with it. I'm going to keep my eyes on these mavericks though, hopefully they make an awd version with the hybrid engine in the near future, I might be sold then.
I'm an F 150 owner my last one I kept for 10 yrs 280 k miles all original no issues. I have 2017 F 150 with 120 K miles no problems. Hopefully the Maverick will do well over time. I may buy a used one couple yrs down the road. Would love to see this guy bring it back to you 5-6 yrs from now see how it's doing.
Ive been saying for years that domestic car makers like ford should build a simple basic truck sub 20k for regular working folks. Prices for new vehicles are ridiculous right now atleast for a domestic even though they are not assemble here
Love the mpg these get but a lot of DYI and handyman purchasing these for the fuel mileage are starting to show signs of regret, the box is just so small most have to make the compromise of tools or hardware.. guess you can’t have it all.
I read a few months ago that Ford had to stop taking orders for this truck because they couldn't get the parts to build it. The demand was already off the hook for these vehicles!
@@LasVegas68 you are correct. They opened the order bank back up for literally a week for the 2023 and had to close it. Bummer I was leaning toward this puppy. Might snag a ranger..
@@NickyNicest the ranger doesn’t look nearly as good as this one🙁I drive them all day at a automotive distributor. It’s like the size of an old f150 with
The “Start/Stop” can be disabled by a dedicated button on the center console. The feature is also disabled if you drive in “Sport Mode”. I have a XL with AWD. My 1st Ford. My 1st truck.
My company just bought three Ford Escapes with stop/start. I found that you can also disable it by getting in the habit of shifting into neutral at stop lights. Maybe it'll work here too.
But it resets itself next time you turn on the car. In BMWs you can do a software alter that’ll put a memory on the start-stop system. Next time you turn on the car it puts it to the setting you last left it to.
I like my Maverick, upgraded from a 2012 Kia rio. Nearly 3000 miles on it already going from RI to NH and just driving all the time. The truck drives nice and I hope it last some good years.
I do hope this inspires other manufacturers to start making affordable small trucks like back in the day. As it stands this would be a nice small modern truck I’m honestly more of a small truck guy lol
@BL Dontmatter heard ya loud n clear bud. The world did. Your opinion is very important. No one wants a tiny 4footer that’s literally 3 times less the cubic feet of your truck from 20 years ago. It’s embarrassing.
Agree totally with Scotty the knob transmission selector and electronic parking brake not my favorite. But finally a decent price on a cute truck. Car makers need to realize that and start building affordable, reliable, economical safe vehicles.
I have a Dodge Ram with the same knob for the transmisión but it’s located next to the volume and air knob 😅 , my brother mistakenly try to lower the volume and put the car in Neutral in a stop lol I like that this little maverick isn’t next to each other 😅
I have 98,000 miles on my Ford C-Max Hybrid, with the same engine that the Maverick has. Still does not use any oil on a 5000 mile oil change, averaged 41.7 mpg over 98,000 miles. Transmission is much smoother than that in my 6 speed Ford Transit with the 2.5 engine.
I have the 2.0 liter ecoboost in my 17 Focus ST. 47k miles still a baby and is such a beast. Hits 150 mph faster than you'd think in this little car. It just feels like it will last a long time. The handling is incredible. Everything on this vehicle is just done right. Sound system is great. Bluetooth works excellent, great cargo space. Just a perfect hatchback with excellent gas mileage when not beating on it. Ford has been doing great things since they started out and I've always loved their products.
@@monsieurdubitatif8567 that depends where you live. Québec makes snow tires mandatory, Ontario (where I live) does not. But having experienced the difference they make, I gladly put four snow tires on every car in my family.
And even if you do get just two, literally every tire manufacturer and large scale tire dealer is gonna say the ones with the most tread go on the rear, regardless of fwd or rwd. You can go to their sites and read why, or search youtube for winter car accidents and you'll see. Every single one ( that's not just regular poor driving anyway) starts with fish tailing out of control. But Scotty never sees snow so it's not something he really has to look into really like us in the north.
My 22 XLT with trailer tow pack is well over two years old now. LOVE it! Getting 32 mpg in mixed driving. (Granted, I am the old guy in the right lane doing the speed limit) Great combo of utility, power and economy. Handles everything I do very competently. I'm retired and do old man projects. This is the perfect fit for that!
The Hermosillo plant is one of Ford's best production facilities. According to Ford Authority they are the top North American Ford plant. So far the quality of the new mavericks and baby bronco has been excellent.
I still have my 97 Ford Explorer Sport. 4.0 SOHC. Now, she is at almost 280,000 miles. Still sticking with it. Take care of them and they take care of you.
@@kirkwilson5900 unfortunately Scotty did get some wrong, as that the hybrid cost $2,000 more it's actually $2,000 more for the 2.0 ecoboost gas engine...
@@smashmaniasmashbrosleague3363 There is like 6 driving modes with the performance mode showing it can get up and go. If you are in eco mode it feels just about the same as any 4 cylinder ford normally does.
Good review! I've had my Maverick XLT for about 6 months now. At ~8K miles, I've been thoroughly impressed! It's smooth to ride, has plenty of giddy-up, particularly if you're rolling along and punch it. Gas mileage hovers at 30. When I do a full run at the 55-65 MPH steady state drive, I'll get as high as 34 with the 2 liter turbo engine. My only complaint is that it should sit higher. Not much, but another two inches and remove the skirting on the nose and it would be much more ranch road friendly.
Strangely enough, I would get the hybrid. The engine is port injected, has no turbo, and the electric part has two motors and acts like a CVT, essentially making it a giant prius. Good to know electric powertrains are becoming cheaper...
When Ford first started selling Hybrid Escapes, years ago, they paid patent licensing fees to Toyota. They didn't try to hide this. Toyota either griped enough or outright sued them to make them stop telling people this. It contained no actual Toyota parts, even though they were sort of implying that. It was just that something (transmission and electric motors?) were a "licensed knock-off". So, yeah, it kind of *is* a giant Prius. :-) Oh and don't worry, folks. Atkinson cycle is nothing special. It's just variable valve timing with a very late intake valve opening. The 02-09 Priuses used that, as did the Mazda Millenia, and it didn't do anything you wouldn't already know how to fix.
Sorry for being too lazy to do my own research, but can someone tell me what makes the cvt trans a plus? My father's jeep patriot had a cvt transmission and it was absolutely horrible. I'm not saying the mavericks is, just was hoping someone could explain why it wasn't?
@@RyanNash20 The idea with a CVT is to have the computer run the engine at the "optimum" rpm for whatever load is presented to it. Steady cruising at 35? 1400 rpm. 45? 1400 rpm. 90? 1400 rpm. Stomp it to merge onto the interstate? 5500 rpm all the way from 5 to 90 mph.
@@erikscott5709 Makes sense, I just see cvt transmissions being talked down on very often, and my own personal experience from my father's patriot was that they give out really easily. I was wondering what makes this one different I guess, not so much how a cvt is supposed to work.
Have the Ford Maverick Hybrid XL very impressed with it, doesn’t go through oil like the ecoboost, just like 2.5 liter 4cylinder Atkinson, a simple engine with a electric motor combination. Let’s go Ford
This review will go down as one of the greats! Idk if it was supposed to be hilarious but it was and this man needs to do all vehicle reviews going forward.
Mine has 5,300 miles on it now, no complaints or issues, going to get it's first oil change. I have the Ecoboost AWD averaging 31.4 miles per gallon. I live in northern Idaho and just put Bridgestone Blizzaks on it. Ready for winter...
I have a 2019 Ford SUV, the sales rep was so proud of that auto stop/start, it was going to save me $6.00 in gas per year. Then I looked into the cost of a new starter plus labor,,checked the box to kill that thing. About 4 months ago the BMS disabled it anyway and it still hasn't made a reappearance after installing a new battery. Ford wants to do all kinds of scans at about a hundred bucks a pop. Welcome to the world of rolling computers.
Yeah, dealers are marking up models with options. Eventually, base hybrid XLs should be more economical than many supposed econocars, but they still tow 2000lb and have 1500lb payload capacity. My Crosstrek tows 1500lb, but I need a trailer to haul a motorcycle or 2 with it. A base Maverick could handle 2 in the bed and more on a trailer.
This is no different than their SUV's.. Just look at the history on those and you'll see how these will fair.. It has the same uni-body, same suspension, and same engine, ect.. It's just their SUV with a bed instead of cargo area. Not much of a truck really. Similar to a Honda Ridgeline. More of an SUV than a truck. They're pretty sweet if you don't ever tow things.
I was on those same roads a few weeks back! Maverick is high on my potential list for the reasons you mentioned. I'm approaching empty-nester status. I like trucks but like smaller vehicles and I have a job where fuel efficiency is a major plus. The Maverick may just check off all those boxes when I get ready to buy again. Really the truck 70% of truck buyers need.
I have essentially this same truck, except I got mine with the tow package. Comes with the hitch, and a built in brake controller. The primary reason to opt for the AWD , in my opinion, is if you are going to want to be able to tow 4,000 lbs. Or take it off road at all. The bed is short, but the tailgate has a second set of pins you can latch it to that enables it to carry 4 x 8 sheet goods like plywood or drywall. The XLT version also has a 110 power outlet inside the cab and another in the bed. I hate the fact that it does the shut off thing at a light- but there is a button near the shift knob that you press when you start up and it turns that annoying feature off. And if you set the drive program to Speed, it delays shifting in the 8 speed gearbox in a way that really makes the truck quite quick ( closer to 280 hp btw) If you set it to ECO mode, then the truck is really pretty slow in acceleration, but that’s how you get the 24 mpg its capable of. The Interior appointments are really quite nice on the XLT, two kinds of charge ports, hand free cell phone service and streaming music, and I got a rear sliding window as an option when I ordered the truck. Another great feature is interior storage. The entire rear seat lifts up and has ample storage underneath for tie down straps, road flares, first aid kit, bungies , jumper cables and more. And I can attest that 5 full grown adults can sit comfortably in the truck. All in all, I am very happy with the Maverick. The only things I would change is the ability to set the auto shutoff system to be OFF as a default, and the Shift knob to have full stops at drive and park so you don’t always have to LOOK to see you are in the right spot. Even with the AWD, tow package and XLT trim package, my truck still came in under 32K.
Ford was brilliant to make a small truck that can handle the utility needs of the average person and at a low price. Compared to all my friends who spent $50k+ on decked out F150s so they could drive it to work and haul something twice a year this seems much smarter. I'm considering one myself, but I'll patiently wait a couple years and see if any bugs come out of the framework.
Its crazy how many people waste their trucks. If you are not hauling or a foot of snow on the ground, drive a daily driver and save that truck which the average person can't actually afford anyway
Front wheel drive still needs 4 snow tires. I discovered this driving a FWD VW with snow tires only on the front. The rear end let go on a curve while the front still had traction, an interesting 180. Braking is also a problem with snows on the front only as the rear/front braking is unbalanced.
Surprised by Scotty saying this as well. If you only have 2 snow tires they should actually go on the back of the fwd car as per example of what happened to OP here when you put them in the front
@@KLondike5 It's not a matter of "not liking" the idea, it's that it's unsafe. For lateral traction control, especially in emergency maneuvers, you want predictable handling front & rear. Every tire manufacturer and review of winters tires have noted this fact. It's not a conspiracy to sell more tires, but this know-nothing claims the "truth."
I’ve had my Lariat AWD with tow package for about 3 months now and I’m very impressed. I live in the city for work but camp every weekend I get. This was PERFECT for me! I can park even in tight spots while also hauling my kayak in the back. Plus there’s lots of hidden little features I love and lots of storage space. It’s perfect and affordable to go all out and customize.
@@steve8803 that’s what I’ve been arguing with myself about the last couple of days. Fully loaded Lariat AWD will run run you upwards of $40k… That’s basically an XLT RANGER and getting pretty close to a base model F150
@@mardobardogardo4930 I've never heard that but now I will never quit repeating it lol , in honor of your POP my freind. Love it and I'm on my 2nd bankruptcy( not so sure they're praying for my well being lol)
I love this little truck! It's just the kind of truck that I'd need, using it for Kayak trailers, single axle utility trailers, etc. most of them are rated around 3,000-3,500 lbs anyways that's all I would need to haul realistically. It's a great truck around town being small & nimble enough to maneuver easily, along for the price point it's being offered at there's nothing else that can beat it imo. Especially for when 90%-95% of the time you're really using it as a daily driver hauling & towing stuff occasionally, you don't need a giant truck to do all of that with either.
I've got this truck. It's a tiny truck and shockingly narrow. Like KIA Forte narrow but about 2 feet longer. It's not a tall vehicle either; you sit higher than a car, yes, but not by much. Yet it has a 6 foot bed, tows at least 4000 pounds, is shockingly quick, parks easily, great airconditioning and just an all-around comfortable and useful vehicle. It's almost a truck for people who intensely dislike trucks. If you made a truck that was furthest from a truck that could still do truck things, then this 32 to 38 mpg truck is it.
My 1989 Mercury Tracer Wagon was built in the same factory in Mexico. It now has over 200,000 miles--cruise control, air conditioning, and everything else still work and it drives great. I also now own a 2022 Maverick XLT AWD with the 4k towing package. I'm sure it will last just as well.
I also had a Mercury Tracer wagon. Great little car and good mileage. My daughter took it to college for four years, then I gave it to her as a wedding gift.
I have a 2015 Ford Fusion that was made in Ford's Hermosillo plant in Mexico. It's been a great car from a build quality standpoint. Actually, much better that the other Fords that we've owned that were built in the US. The 2.0 turbo has shown to be a pretty solid engine as well; I've had two of them go over 150k miles without any issues other than they both needed a purge valve to be replaced at around 80k miles. Kind of a pain to replace because of the location, but it was only swapping out a $90 part, so no real hardship there.
Scotty, you were DEAD ON with everything you said!!! I have owned several full size vehicles and small trucks, my favorite small truck was the Chevy S10. I actually gave away my F150 which was a great vehicle because I am downsizing on everything. I have built 2 homes beating the hell out of them and now done with construction. I want a truck to do basic functionality and only wanted a 2 door truck and find out, they don't make them anymore. I purchased a 2024 Ford Maverick and am VERY IMPRESSED!!! Everything you mentioned works perfectly and I TOO DON'T LIKE, all the electronics on anything. I want to be in control, not what a computer program is suggesting. The S10 was MANUAL TRANSMISSION. I want the GEAR, "I WANT", NOT the Manufacturer. GREAT JOB SCOTTY, YOU ARE THE MAN. Bobby Estey (Dayton, NV)
I bought a 2016 Fusion Hybrid, made in Mexico, I bought it new, and not a single problem. Still driving it today. And it's very easy to beat the mpg rating on the sticker. When I take it on the highway, if I keep it just under 70, (the speed limit is 65 where I am) I get over 50 mpg.
I have had the Maverick with Lariat Trim and Luxury package for 2 weeks now and I absolutely love the size of it. I originally was going to buy a car and this has way more utility. And with the hybrid version I am getting 37.6 mpg so far!
I've owned my Maverick for a little over a month. I have the basic FWD version with a tow package. I've taken it on a couple of longer trips and have gotten 35mpg each time using the eco setting. I'm surprised by how quick it is when passing, and it is a very simplistic yet versatile vehicle. Most of my complaints about it are just nitpicky things. It drives/handles very well and I give it an overall thumbs up so far. Get a bed extension bar for the receiver and you'll be set for just about anything.
@@dcgregorya5434 You are right. You are not going to haul cattle. I have a small boat, kayaks, and a small trailer. It does just fine for those things. I would hope that anyone buying this truck would know the basic package isn't going to haul huge loads.
@@lonewolffisherman7092 it can haul the same types of stuff you can haul behind a minivan. Not kidding btw, it has the same stats. Thats my issue with this truck...its the truck that just isn't. There's a big world thats less than a cattle trailer and more than what this can do, it has very low stats to where I feel like people are going to try to do pickup truck stuff with this and come away sorely disappointed or worse, get hurt or damage it.
@@dcgregorya5434 I've never hauled 4x8 sheets of drywall in a minivan, but I have with the maverick. I've been waiting for a decent priced 4cyld truck for years because that's all I needed/wanted. Great gas mileage and perfect for what I need.
Great review Scotty. Drove our new four-cylinder all-wheel drive Maverick from Albuquerque New Mexico to Portland Oregon. Went down Highway 1 from Seaside Oregon to San Francisco. Then to Vegas Nevada and back home to Albuquerque. We were traveling for approximately 3 weeks , average gas MPG was 26.8 over 3800 miles. Love the truck, smooth with plenty of power. You nailed the review.
@@tomdavis3038 How do you know that is not great mpg??? Know how much weight he was hauling??? How fast he was going??? How many people were in it ??? It is still a truck, remember??? :)
Mileage depends on weather, elevation, other factors lol. It is not across the board apply all number. 26 average driving that kind of mileage in different elements is impressive.
I test drove one of these Maverick XLT, just yesterday morning. I must say that I was impressed with the look, interior layout, dash, materials, bed accessories. Very little leg room, while sitting in the back seat, would be my biggest complaint. The one I drove was a FWD, 4 cylinder only vehicle. It was not the hybrid model. I did put name on the dealer's to-call list, once a person can order their own vehicle again.
Scotty - the Maverick isn't available with a 3-cylinder engine. The only powertrain options are the 2.5L I4 hybrid, or the 2.0L I4 Ecoboost which can also be spec'd with the AWD system. I ordered a Hybrid right when ordering opened. The fact that the 2.5 has port injection alone gives me more confidence in long-term use over the direct injection of the Ecoboost.
I love Mr Kilmers reviews! Always entertaining and even though he bashes on some brands that I have had exceptional experience with, it’s his personality that makes him the kind of guy I would love to hang out with and just talk cars with.. he’s honest, probably the most honest of any mechanic I have ever met.. thank you scotty for all the content, I truly appreciate your perspective, opinion and experience!
Had a 2009 pt cruiser that was built in Mexico. 10 years and 90000 miles. Had near zero problems. Exceptionally well built solid vehicle in every way. Was rear ended twice. Second time insurance totaled it so I bought it back, rehung the rear bumper, lived with the dents in the lift gate and drove it another 2 years and 20k and sold it.
It is proven that 4 snow tires are far superior to 2 in the snow and ice. The winter tires today are also much improved over those from many years ago. Trust people who drive in Canadian winters in Montreal. :)
I have the 2024 XLT front wheel drive version. On the center console there's a 5 button cluster and the bottom left pad, if depressed, will disable the auto stop/start crap feature. You do have to press it after each startup to disengage as it defaults back to the auto stop/start.
Scotty, please try the "new" Frontier - No start stop, no funny cylinder deactivation, no hybrid, no turbos. Just a 3.8L and a 9 speed transmission. Pretty decent MPG with the amount of HP they're producing with and no funny business under the hood.
Bro I test drove one and ended up just getting a used 2019 with the 4.0 for like 10k less than a base 2022. It feels about the same to drive as the old version. There is also direct injection on the new engine with no port injection to clean the valves.
I like the way the new Nissan Frontier trucks look but something tells me the Tacoma will still out last the Frontier. I’m in the market right now & I’m looking at new pickup’s & the Tacoma is still cheaper than the new Nissan.
I'm waiting for 1 cylinder, hybrid, quad turbo boost, making 60mpg combined, 550 hp and 500 torque, with msrp $45,000 with $35,000 mark up dealer plus 25 APR and total $100,000 out the door just for small pick up truck. Then I will lifted with $30,000 lifted, put $10,000 tires and rims and put the Balls hanging on the back to make it look cool. Oh yeah, put a bumper sticker: C O O L a $1,000 bumper sticker. After 4 months, I cried because the dealership tow away my small pickup truck. At least am happy driving it 4 months only on weekends. 😅
actually the hybrid on this vehicle IS the base model for the $20,000 sticker price. the turbo model is more expensive. Also, I trust the hybrid more than the turbo engine. The hybrid has a naturally asperated run of the mil 4 cylinder paired with a ecvt, NOT a regular cvt with steel belts, but a gear to gear cvt system with a run of the mil electric drive motor attached to the transmission. Anther good thing about this, is even if the batteries ware out, it can still utilize the gas engine no problem, even for years to come. I would not flinch on buying one of these used, as normal hybrids drop in value very quickly.
I have a 2013 Fusion Hybrid with that configuration (I think it’s the second generation). It’s over 200k miles and it’s really holding up well. HV Battery is showing its age (especially in the winter), but it reliably gets the car a few miles before it turns the engine back over. A few of the 2013s had some bad problems, but I have to assume by 2022 they’ve worked out those kinks. It’s a sound design that’s mechanically less complex than the turbo charged, GDFI, 4 cyl on that wonky electronic transmission.
My favorite feature: It has a window that you can see out of 😁 Was waiting on the 2023 (have to now, they stopped taking orders in November and won't again until August). Hybrid, commute for work, no towing, occasional hauling stuff. Hoping for some changes for 2023: AWD hybrid, fog lights,, etc.. Perfect for me. $10K less than a car.
I'm waiting on a 4wd hybrid model to come out. It will replace both my Dodge Dakota and my Prius. I hunt, fish, camp and occassionally pull a trailer with a lawn mower on it(I've done it with my prius). I've gotten stuck in my dodge dakota hunting, and I used 4WD to get out. So that's what I'm waiting on.
My guess is they won't put out a hybrid AWD. Just not enough oomph in that motor to handle the extra drivetrain. I could very well be wrong though. We've got a hybrid FWD on order.
@@BamaShinesDistillery Are you not looking under hoods? I haven't had a car that does not require opening the door, except for 1960's cars with hood pins.

You should be smart enough to figure that out… I’m really shaking my head right now that this flew over your head. It’s a smart idea, but a super simple concept that seems to have been lost on you.
Scotty, you mentioned Maverick from the 70s. I live in the south and I know of two Mavericks, a lime green and a brown one. They both are in very good shape and seem to run well. That truck, you're right if not many troubles rise up with these, they could be the next Model T sales wise.

I believe it had the aluminum engine which turned out to be one of the worst engines in automotive history. I really considered this sad because i thought it was one of the best looking compact sport coupes out there and the reason we went out to test drive it in the first place.
Our friend got the Maverick car when it first came out in the early 70s. It was okay but had a crude suspension that let you feel and hear the tiniest imperfections in the road's surface.
From the video, its looks like these are equipped with Continental ProContact Tour all-season tires...EXCELLENT all around tires, I have these on both of my vehicles...Rated for 80k miles, cuts through wet, rainy roads like nothing, and also quite decent in light snow/ice
I have the same tires on 18 in low profile rims but I got a bad batch of tires as the treads weren’t smooth on some and was shaking for 8k miles, they didn’t static balance but I bought the best tire for doing everything and had the best overall all season performance in snow which I get a lot of in New England. It’s on my hatchback Mazda 3 (2014)
@@jamesmedina2062 yes I noticed that too, they’re quite meaty and my car didn’t get noise dampening until 2018 model so I hear more. I listen to music loud anyways lol
@@ItalianMetalHED All cars get noise dampening but what is sad is that many economy cars get much less on purpose. It doesnt need to weigh much either. Its fairly easy to address via lightweight materials. Engine noise has proven harder for me to address in lower octaves. Conti are good in snow and rain but you can try some others.
I got a 2008 Ranger , sept . '07 , for $19,500 , ( Canadian ) besides oil & filters, the only things I replaced were tires & a battery at year 10 , sport , supercab , 3 litre v6 , 5 speed , air . now you can't get them , new Ranger is twice the price , & harder to work on .
My step father bought a 2007 Ranger Sport Supercab, 4WD, auto, with the 4.0L V-6. Even with the biggest engine it wasn't quick and sucked gas. The ride was rough. But durability wise you couldn't beat it. The thing was bulletproof and was perfect for the winters here in New England. It was rust that ending up eating her away 13 years later.
If I were considering one of these, I would worry most about the Ecoboost engine. Ford has made front wheel drive transmissions and uni-body cars for decades. Ford can do it well if they wan to. My mother had two Ford Taurus's that went close to 300,000 miles and we had a Ford Escort that went 240,000 miles. Both front wheel drive and unibody construction. As to made in Mexico, I had a 1982 Ford Ranger with the 2.3 that went almost 300,000 miles. The engine was made in Mexico. (It was noisy as the 2.3 in those days was not counter-balanced).
Maverick is and will be proven to be an excellent little truck. Ford is getting it right with the escape Bronco and Bronco sport and now… they got it right with the MAVERICK. Good to see…
Says who....? They just came out and aren't proven They might be a dissaster like all the other ecoboost engines that are twin turboed with GDI..... How long will the AWD system work for the rear drive coupler? Good luck
@@fil1329 Yep you got it brother. For me I chose the Coyote V8 over the EcoBoost V6 anyday of the week because that way I don't have to deal with the issues of the turbos going out and costing a fortune.
It’s about time that somebody gave us a small truck that looks like a truck and not like a station wagon with the rear half removed. Saw a Maverick just the other day. It is a good looking little truck.
I know you might say this was a bad idea but i had a 81 vw diesel pickup and i loved it, reason i bring this up is it was unibodied and it was front wheel drive. Parts were cheap and it was tuff and extremely fun. I miss the small trucks we had back then . The trucks today are way too big. I think think toyota and izuzi were the last of the small compact pickups. I love the old small toyota pickups. Wish they come back. I really like this maverick truck. I think it will do well. Its more drivable . Oh and i had that vw in the 2000 era, Only reason i let it go is basic pickups dont have a reclining seat. A must when one has a bad spine......Good work Scotty I am a avid fan.
i thought i knew a lot about cars until i started watching scotty years ago. my car iq is way better today than it was before i started watching the guru. also, how great would it be to be his neighbor? got a car issue... 'hey scotty.. got a minute?!'
I thought that with advances in technology over the last 50 years that I've been buying cars, it would be nearly impossible to buy a bad vehicle today. After watching Scotty, I no longer think that.
I've got 5,000 miles on my Lariat Maverick with FX4 and 4k tow package. I absolutely love it, have had 0 problems, get great gas mileage, and can tow up to 4,000 lbs. I've worked at a car dealer for the last 11 years and this is one of the most well rounded vehicles I've ever driven. For the price it can't be beat.
@@jesseserrano6520 80k miles is nothing lol. I doubt you'll see many problems, especially everything used in the maverick has already been proven in other vehicles.
Great informed video. I too had 2 Mavericks. 1970, Hula Blue with a 170 cid engine. I loved it. For $1995.00, you couldn’t go,wrong. Also a 1976, 4 door, two toned brown. Good one too, with. 250cid.
I almost bought one of these last month. The dealer here had one but they were jacking the price way up above MSRP, so I bought a used Lexus with 30k miles on it. I was looking for longevity and figured the Lexus is known for that, the Maverick however remains to be known. If they hold up well over time I might get into one.
@@Fister_of_Muppets u need something comfortable and you were about to buy a maverick?! Mavericks are so uncomfortable that sitting inside them for couple hours was making my back hurt..
"only 250hp" - for some context my old 71 Challenger R/T with the 340 was rated for somewhere around 235hp - at the crank NOT the wheel. the Maverick weighs about 400lbs more. but still pretty amazing what they can get out of the little 4 cylinders these days...
Couldn't agree more with Scotty on the subject of improving a vehicles gas mileage..But we do agree on how much we dislike our engines cutting out at 4 way stops, red lights etc...
Welp Scotty - I'm an Ford man from the 60's and I love hard core points and carburetors - glad to see the name Maverick back out and it really fits on a car/truck. I cant wait to see you review of any EV. I'm going to be the last one to buy an EV - too High Price......
EV's have been in the market since the late 1800's. The problem is that manufacturers still insist on the same mistake they did at that time, while putting the blame on the oil industry. I'll only buy an electric car when a complete conversion kit costs less than an engine rebuild.
If your worried about the 2.0 ecoboost, I have a 2014 Focus ST that Ive had sunce May 14. I have put 213k miles on that engine and shes still going strong! Ive neglected her at times but she keeps on keeping on. She needs some TLC to fix a few things but she still gets me to work and the A/C works in this South Texas heat!
I got my for maverick in September 22 my transmission had to be replaced May 23- hopefully I will not have any more issues luckily it’s still under warranty so it’s being fixed for free.
I'm pretty sure that start-stop garbage is disabled while driving in sport (s) mode. At least that's how the Ranger is, and the transmission shifts much better as well. Normal (D) mode is just so Ford can meet EPA numbers, but in reality sport mode is how you should drive it.

Nice Mark, do some videos I will sub! I have over 80 Mav vids on my channel you might like. I have a hybrid for mpg and a turbo AWD for fun.
Oh and don't worry, folks. Atkinson cycle is nothing special. It's just variable valve timing with a very late intake valve opening. The 02-09 Priuses used that, as did the Mazda Millenia, and it didn't do anything you wouldn't already know how to fix.
Exactly. In fact the hybrid has no transmission. Just a fixed set of planetary gears. Impossible to wear out.

If fuel efficiency is what you are looking at then this truck is awesome. Mine has been getting 43 mpg in town. I havent taken it highway yet.
Consider a Ridgeline, no turbo, 3.5V6 with much better MPG.

@@tacocin I get 25 in my ranger with 4 wheel drive
A decked out f150 is way more than 50k
Its crazy how many people waste their trucks. If you are not hauling or a foot of snow on the ground, drive a daily driver and save that truck which the average person can't actually afford anyway

Front wheel drive still needs 4 snow tires. I discovered this driving a FWD VW with snow tires only on the front. The rear end let go on a curve while the front still had traction, an interesting 180. Braking is also a problem with snows on the front only as the rear/front braking is unbalanced.
Agreed suprised Scotty doesn't realize this.
Totally agree
@Bugs Bunny living in Maine, I’ve owned RWD, FWD, AWD, 4X4. FWD is no way better than AWD, and if the snow is deep 4x4 is best.

@@KLondike5 It's not a matter of "not liking" the idea, it's that it's unsafe. For lateral traction control, especially in emergency maneuvers, you want predictable handling front & rear.
Hybrid or regular?
My 1989 Mercury Tracer Wagon was built in the same factory in Mexico. It now has over 200,000 miles--cruise control, air conditioning, and everything else still work and it drives great. I also now own a 2022 Maverick XLT AWD with the 4k towing package. I'm sure it will last just as well.
I never meet anyone with a tracer. I had a 1993 mercury tracer (sedan) as my first car ever!

I hope you eventually review the Maverick hybrid as well.
I've owned my Maverick for a little over a month. I have the basic FWD version with a tow package. I've taken it on a couple of longer trips and have gotten 35mpg each time using the eco setting. I test drove one of these Maverick XLT, just yesterday morning. I must say that I was impressed with the look, interior layout, dash, materials, bed accessories. The only powertrain options are the 2.5L I4 hybrid, or the 2.0L I4 Ecoboost which can also be spec'd with the AWD system.
I ordered a Hybrid right when ordering opened. The fact that the 2.5 has port injection alone gives me more confidence in long-term use over the direct injection of the Ecoboost.

actually the hybrid on this vehicle IS the base model for the $20,000 sticker price. the turbo model is more expensive.
Hybrids actually hold their value better… I’ve had 3. Hybrids have high demand..
Agreed, this is barely noticeable when driving but yes I really don't like that feature
If I could afford one, I'd buy one. Probably the FWD base model, but with a full sized spare.
Nice looking truck. Thanks for the review, Scotty.
I’ve been waiting for this review!
As have I
Welp Scotty - I'm an Ford man from the 60's and I love hard core points and carburetors - glad to see the name Maverick back out and it really fits on a car/truck.
70s maverick buffs cant understand why ford called it a maverick. No imagination maybe.
@@gsilva220 Surprised you didn't expect it for free.
I’ve never been so hyped about a mini truck in a long time. I may sign the contract and get one for the beach.
Also get a land cruiser to pull out your Maverick from sand..
Finally, the Maverick review I've been waiting for!
Guaranteed until the rubber band breaks.
I’ve been waiting on the small truck to make a comeback. Hopefully this is just the beginning and they start to get even smaller!
I saw my first Mavric at the Aldi's the other day. 10x better looking in person and looked bigger than I anticipated...👍🏼
I have a 2018 Escape with the start-stop feature. Once the oil gets dirty, it doesn't do it as much.
there is a button on the center console to disable it.
