  • The Ford Maverick might be a compact pickup, but for many people it’s a better choice that a full-sized truck… or even a car. Affordable, fuel efficient and easy to drive, Maverick can replace the family car if you don’t need a lockable trunk. Tom Voelk checks out an XLT model powered by the 2-liter EcoBoost engine and finds that size matters. Just not the way you might think. Also, a quick look at Maverick’s only real competitor, the Hyundai Santa Cruz.
Editor’s Note- The Maverick is in short supply. Chances are dealers will charge over MSRP. We know that. You know that. The free-market economy giveth, the free-market economy taketh away.

I got a "Tremor", its awesome , But I figure I'm going to pay this off until I'm in positive equity, and trade in for the cheaper Hybrid model, I'm gonna be spoiled with some of the features I have; I already know, so I wouldn't be able to go without any options myself... but I could do without this moon roof/ sunroof thing.

It's really fun to see these out in the wild, they are so much smaller than traditional trucks. 100% agree with the sentiment these are a focus replacement - Americans need versatility and sometimes a small SUV doesn't cut it. I think Ford has hit the bullseye on a new customer segment

I'm actually kinda surprised that this size of pickup truck wasn't already a segment. The Mexican car market has had pretty tiny 4-cilinder pickup trucks for a long-ass time. Hell, one of them was Ford and it was tiny like a 2000s Ford Fiesta. VW and Fiat also offer some of them and they're cheap and versatile.

I've had pickups all of my adult life. Went from a small Nissan Frontier to a Chevy 2500, several different full size service trucks and finally a Tundra. I desperately wanted to go back to a small truck like my old Frontier. Nothing out there so I had given up on getting a replacement truck as I didn't want a gigantic monstrosity of a truck or the second house payment that goes with one! When I saw the Maverick last June I was first in line at my dealership to get one ordered. Exactly what I wanted and needed. Couldn't be happier with the truck.

I have an XL plain jane hybrid and love it. It was exactly what I was looking for. I had sold my old Tundra last year and was looking for something that could carry larger things but really didn't need a pickup anymore, especially with them all being gigantic and the price of a small house. We were looking at mid sized SUV's but really wasn't too excited about it. Then I stumbled across an internet story about this new "Maverick". The minute I saw it, I knew that was exactly what I was looking for. All the usability of a daily driver car with the convenience of a small pickup bed when needed. Placed my order the first week they opened up the order bank. Picked it up last week and couldn't be happier. My only complaint is that I didn't think to order two of them! They are extremely hard to get but if you are patient, it is worth the wait. I've had mine a week now and have already had two offers to buy it for $12K more than I paid for it. It is probably the hottest vehicle on the market right now and will stay there until the Lightning finally starts shipping!

I really enjoyed his review, and I think that the extended information about how the truck actually functions day to day is fantastic. I sat in one a few days ago and absolutely loved it. Now the difficulty is trying to find one! For my commute, the Hybrid is absolutely perfect since it’s almost 600 mi. per tank! That’s what I get my Honda accord hybrid from 2014 right now. But with this truck, I can finally have usable “trunk” space, instead of just a battery pack in the Accord!

I ended up buying a old Honda pilot as a stop gap until prices dropped but honestly the thing does everything so much better than I ever expected I’m not sure I’ll get something new now. It was cheap, it’s paid for, gets 22mpg, loaded with options including leather heated seats, has AWD with a 4WD mode that has a center locking differential and tows 5k pounds. I really want a Maverick but never expected the Honda to be such a utilitarian vehicle especially for the price. I need to test drive one, maybe it’ll change my mind lol.

I have a Diamondback cover on my big F250 truck (need the big truck for the big trailer). The Diamondback cover protects everything in the bed and can be folded back to carry tall cargo or removed by one person in 5-10 minutes. I'd go that route if I was looking at the Maverick. To me it's the perfect truck. Enough room to haul 4 or 5 people. A small but still usable bed that even offers a bed extender option. Even without the extender, it's perfect for hauling mulch or other items that i would normally haul in my wife's Edge ST. From test driving an XLT 2.0 Awd Maverick. I found It drove like a car. It rode well and you can tow a light trailers. Maybe Ford will add Awd option on Hybrid powered Mavericks, and hopefully they don't raise it's price due to supply chain issues and inflationary material adjustments. It's a great small truck with a price that falls well below the $47,000 new vehicle average. In my opinion, it's a fantastic versatile vehicle that handles a lot of needs. If I remember correctly. You have hidden storage under the rear seat and while looking at the ordering program before it closed. Ford even offers camper toppers for the bed just like it's big big brother F150. I Have to include while at my Ford dealership. Next door is a Hyundai dealership. I looked over the Santa Cruz and thought maybe my wife wouldn't miss the rear Hatch section of her Edge making my own small truck. That's what I thought of after seeing the Santa Cruz is. An SUV with a bed attached. Ford did that with the Explorer Sport Trac. Looking at both mini pickups. I really like that the Maverick looks and is a real truck. Not a hybrid design. You actually own basically the same Maverick I'll be ordering. Same color XLT but with Awd which should help with using it during snowy winter months. First time on your site, but I'm looking forward to your future videos. Thanks for providing a informative owners perspective of owning a Maverick.

I was at my local Ford dealer a few weeks ago & I asked the service rep how the Maverick was selling, there was one parked there that he said someone paid 5 thousand cash over MSRP just to get it. I am not in the market, but maybe someday. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for sharing. Great content showcasing everything that this was designed to do. The Maverick is what the Ranger started out to be.
I would want it to default to ECO when I start it. Is it an option to set the default? I like this for the 40+ MPG and pickup.
1500 lbs is a 3/4 ton payload. Impressive!
Thank you for the idea of the sound system upgrade.
Thank you for letting us know about the Sync 3 system. Perhaps next year's model will be Sync 4?
Needs more USB outlets. Each person should have a USB port in today's electronic device world.
Is there an aftermarket store that showcases everything that can be accessorized or 3d printed for it?

I really want to drive one. I'm not a Ford guy, I drive Rams all day. But I was intrigued by this truck since I first heard about it. Unibody doesn't bother me. I've owned minivans before I owned trucks and those could handle a lot of weight. I just wonder how well I'd fit inside. I find all suvs to be too cramped. I'm 6'2" and not a slender 6'2" so I need space. What I love about my Ram and the Chrysler minivans I've owned in the past is their interior space. Everything was spread out and comfortable for me to reach.

A great review as always. I have only seen ONE Maverick at my local dealer when they first became available. I have not seen another once since. My local Hyundai dealer gets regular deliveries of the Santa Cruz (all trims). "I pity the fools" who are buying any new vehicle right now as the dealers are tacking on ridiculous markups. Used prices for anything less than three years old are at full list price even with 40,000 miles on the clock.

Because there’s so many factory drilled DIY holes in the bed I’ve added inexpensive but strong adjustable tie down rails with stainless steel eye bolts & SS floor D-rings. No problem carrying 12ft lumber etc.. Maverick is amazingly thought out. Wouldn’t miss my F150 except for manual transmission.

Another fine review. Regarding your auto stop/start tests: I recently borrowed a cousin vehicle, a new Bronco Sport Big Bend, and I noticed that the auto-start was smooth enough when I let my foot off the brake to proceed. However, if the engine restarted itself during a longer stop (so as to power the A/C, I guess) while my foot was still on the brake, it definitely had more of a lurch. I wonder if you've noticed that in your vehicle testing--different auto-start smoothness depending on the circumstances of the auto-start.

I ordered mine back in sept. 21- Took nearly 6 months, but the dealer honored the sticker price for ordered vehicles. Ford built this after noticing that 20 year old tacomas were still routinely selling for half their original sticker price, because people Wanted a smaller, more affordable truck, not the bloated upsized trucks that rangers, tacomas, and other marques had turned into. The thing I like is that it has all sorts of utility and convenience features built in, from the two 110 power outlets, to the USB and USB-C charger ports, to the spacious underseat and in cab storage. To the integrated tie downs and the short bed that can still carry 4X8 sheet materials. Hyundai’s recent plague of engine troubles, and the $8,000 higher price on their Santa Cruze with matching options, coupled with the total unavailability of one to test drive back in late 21 decided me on the Maverick. I find the AWD 250 hp Maverick, set to sport mode, is plenty fast and zippy. And I like that their tow package that gives you 4,000 lb towing capacity includes a built in brake controller.

I live Washington State and the Maverick is perfect solution for people that live here. it's a perfect fit for people who liked the old Ranger compact pickups. the somewhat different interior trim. is because Ford is using recycled materials. which in this day and age is wise thing. I would be curious to see a single cab version. but its not possible. the plastics around the bed won't last very long if a person uses it as a work truck. but it's a good thing that Ford offers replacement pieces for that. it's small but Ford went for that on purpose. because they have the mid sized Ranger, and the F150, and then the Super Duty. it was designed for people who live in the city that need to haul things. like garden mulch, mountain bikes, surf boards, jet skis, four wheelers, and other such items. I think Ford hit an out of the park home run with this vehicle. and the proof of that is they have been getting snatched up very quickly. making them hard to get.

Same, especially once the base price and powertrain were announced. $20k 40mpg compact pickup? There's a ton of demand for something like that. People have been clamoring for a small truck forever, and were disappointed at the Ranger not being very small and not being very cheap. @@musicauthority7828 well I completely disagree. The Focus RS is an amazing vehicle, the Focus ST is a wonderfully hot hatch, and the Focus Elecric is one of the most fun to drive inexpensive electric vehicles ever built. Only the base Focus SE with naturally aspirated 2.0L and that stnpid twin clutch transmission sucked. Even the 1.0L Ecoboost Focus with the manual was an amazing little car! @@fabulousoffroaddesigns5080 You don't know what you are talking about. @@musicauthority7828 well we currently own an FFE which we love enough that we are not trading it. I sold for Ford and I have done consulting in the automotive space, but that dual clutch transmission was a real issue. The old mechanics in our shop loved the 1.0L Focus cars. That was usually what they picked for their wives and kids. Not to mention parts are cheap.
Like I said though, this pick up is not based on the Focus. It is based on the Fusion. The Fusion shared some hard points from the Focus and the C2 platform but not much else. The engines, transmissions, 4WD systems, CV joints, alternators, wiring, etc are all related to the Fusion not the Focus.
