Great review, thanks! I do wish that you had not called the transmission simply as a CVT however. It creates confusion, because it is not a traditional belt and pulley based CVT at all. In fact there is no traditional transmission, it is a two-motor-and-planetary-gear system being passed off as a E-CVT, which means simplicity and fewer parts to break. I have a Hybrid XLT on order and can’t wait to get my hands on my first truck!

What I like about this truck is that it can be used as a daily driver due to its good MPG. My half ton gets only 17 mpg and gas here in CA is over $4 gallon. I only need to tow heavy loads infrequently.
I owned full size trucks all my life, finally moved down to a mid-size Tacoma, and then even that started feeling too big. A Rav4 Hybrid felt like the right size, but I missed the bed. Maverick has come along at the right time in my life. Now we wait for it to be built.
The idea of buying a full-size truck so you can move a couch-or any large furniture-is so wild to me. How often are you moving couches? I'd buy the smaller, cheaper truck and then rent a full-size truck for $15/hour from Home Depot, Lowes, etc. only when I need it. For how much money you'd save on gas and a monthly payment by going with this, you could rent a truck every month and still come out ahead. Obviously, I'm not factoring in other things-like interior quality-but from a purely functional standpoint, I just don't understand why you'd spring for the big truck. Also, does anyone else see any of the original Honda Ridgeline (or the 2nd gen Honda Pilot) in this design? I'm 20 Y/O I have driven the same 2012 Ford Fusion since high school, I have driven a variety of trucks and do steer more towards the midsize both for use case and budget. Unfortunately, gas prices are a pain right now so MPG is at the top of my list. I am looking at a compact-midsize pickup and they all seem to offer great things for what I want and need. The Nissan frontier looks old and I personally am not a fan of Nissan, it does ride nice but the interior is dated, The Tacoma is best in class reliability and have heard great things but I have test driven a 2019 and I am 6'1" I have hit my head on the roof which is not fun, also the cabin feels a lot more like a sedan than a pickup. The ranger is kind of out of my price range but it feels cramped, not really as much as a midsize pickup should. I have also had quite a few full size pickups and always 4WD, V8 and an automatic. The big trucks can get things done. Period. But I like driving the small trucks a whole lot more when I'm not getting things done. Or for small jobs. They handle so much better, use WAY less gas and are so easy to maneuver and park. Not to mention fitting UNDER things like doorways. I'm glad to see the return of a true compact pickup at an affordable price. The hybrid gets 40+ mpg? Wow.

Probably the best car review I’ve watched on RUclips. Very informative, very professional. It reminds me of Motor Week. Oh, and now I want the Maverick.
And 2 years later you was right! Dealerships can’t keep them on the lots even when marked $10k-$15k over msrp lol. I was lucky enough to find a lariat edition with the tremor package. Definitely one of the best mid size trucks Ford has made since the old ranger
I own a Fusion Hybrid and like you said the drone is only on heavy throttle. Unlike a gas car once up to speed the engine often just turns off which is nice. It climbs hills w/o that gear too tall/gear too low shifting. I'm on my 3rd Ford maybe someday the Maverick will be #4. I really like it. I used to drive small Toyota PU's.
I want this truck so bad. I haven't used my Colorado to haul anything in over a year. Only other people borrow it to haul stuff. The intersection by my house is a diverging diamond, so I'm doing a lot of start stop and sitting. Engine idling the whole time. This hybrid would be a game changer. I'm 34 and just now getting over brand loyalty 🤣

4:49 that's the sound of the engine spinning at max torque RPM, not the planetary gears that function as a CVT.
Great review, thank you! Ford has obviously hit one out of the park with their new Maverick. I LOVE my 2002 F150 with 4.2L V6 and 5sp manual OD Tranny. Still, I plan on test driving a Maverick at my local dealer. KEEP IN MIND---the Maverick has been so successful out of the gate that the entire production run for 2022 has been sold. That's right, you'll have to wait unit 2023 to order anew. Nice going!
Thanks for the review, Tom. I have to think the base model will be flying off dealer lots. Certainly, that's the one I'd be considering, and I've never considered a pickup before.
11:52 Regarding the gentleman remarking about hauling a couch. Uh, most pickups don't have beds long enough to haul a couch "level", unless you get a regular cab, long bed 6 ft+. Otherwise, you'd have to have the tailgate down, or have part of the couch rest on top of the tailgate at an angle. Strapped in place, of course.
I'd like a little more rugged look, but there's no question that a lot of thought was put into practicality and usability. I love how flexible the bed of this thing is.
Nice truck. I fell in love when I saw those steel wheels and uncovered sheetmetal of the doors. The absence of an electric tailgate (why would I want to wait for that thing to slowly come down?) let me utter a sigh of relief. Love the idea how they support DIY. Please, Ford, add a manual gearbox and bring that thing to Germany!
I for one am excited, i just ordered my maverick a few weeks ago and can’t wait to drive it, I’ve had a ranger for about 14 years and hate how large the new trucks have gotten, even the maverick is larger then my old ranger. But its within what i consider a good size for the handy man work i do. So while I’m loosing a bit of bed space and gaining unneeded cab space, I’m looking forward to an updated and modern truck, ill miss the simplicity of my old ranger. Here’s to hoping that the maverick lasts just as long as my old truck.
@@sappyjohnson they are already being built, mine will enter production in the next month or so and should get it at the dealership around the end/start of the year
@@louisbarningham yeah i live in a major city and sit in traffic most days so that 40mpg city is super enticing, and with my current truck not getting as good as it used to(still better then any mid-full size truck) but going from around 20-24mpg to 40 will be a huge savings each month
Fantastic, Tom! Was really looking forward to your take because I have a hybrid Maverick on order. You have certainly given me no reason to cancel that.
The idea that you could travel the United States for cheaper than ever is awesome, I'll definitely be going to the mountains and beaches of north Carolina again and again, I've placed an order for A lariet Maverick for 33 thousand dollars with everything that I would need. Will be buying one of those smaller tents that will fit in the back of the truck!
I've been wanting one since I saw it. I've wanted a truck for a long time, from a Tacoma to a Gladiator to the Maverick, but it seems that the Maverick is the most apt choice for my life.
I feel like you could actually do sheet rock in the back with a sheet of plywood as a base and a some 2x4's across the top to clamp down on with straps
Yes, I'd like to know more about how the drive train works since my motto is "death before CVT" and my understanding is this is more robust and no slop.
@@JSMacondo it's functionally identical to the Toyota Hybrid system. You have a planetary gear set with two electric motors and the gas motor providing input to it. By varying the input speeds of all three, you alter the output speed of the gearset which changes your vehicle speed. It is absolutely the most robust way of doing a "cvt" style non conventional transmission. I would hazard a guess based on Toyotas history with this design, that it will be more reliable long term than the 8 speed conventional automatic in the ecoboost variant.
@@JSMacondo I don’t have the web address but there is a video on you tube of a WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY professor completely explaining how a Toyota E-CVT operates. It is totally taken apart and put back together as he explains it’s different parts and functions. Fascinating!
@@TinLeadHammer Cheap, small, robust. It's like the old ranger in plenty of ways. Factoring in inflation, it's actually cheaper than the old ranger, it's even cheaper that the model Y incredibly. It's more powerful, obviously more fuel efficient, has a higher payload, should be more durable long term, looks better, is safer, has more tech, and more character. It's a home run, one of the first cheap cars in quite some time that's so good that it breaks my brain.
Love the interior, glad ford is thinking outside their own box with this vehicle overall. Great mileage. That will attract a lot to this vehicle. I will keep my 17 supercab Raptor. Love it every single day that I drive it... Which is daily...😀
That works really well on the maverick actually. Had a chance to see a Maverick xlt in area 51. That exterior color, with the white, gray, orange and blue interior was almost a revelation. A revelation that not every affordable new car needed to be a sea of gray on the inside. I'll be honest, didn't like the interior of the xlt maverick at all when I saw the initial pics and vids. After experiencing it in person, my mind is blown. It uses some cheap plastics because duh, but it looks fantastic for the price point. Feels and looks much nicer than the 24k xlt price would suggest.
@@DIYtryer To be fair, we've spent the last like 14 years living with a Kia Rio where every single piece of the interior aside from the gauges is a washed out gray. So seeing a colorful interior again was a very joyful experience. You never realize how much vibrant colors matter to you, until you've been driving a gray sweaty swamp like I've been for over a decade.
I purchased a Lariat 'base' with only the sunroof and trailer hitch options. The ride and quality are much better than expected. For me, a near perfect vehicle!
This looks like the perfect truck for all of those truck guys who don't really need a truck. I do need a truck, but I don't need something gigantic like an F150 and I think the Maverick would be a nice fit. I never tow, but I do haul various kinds of loads in the bed. Everything from pallets of flooring to lumber to construction debris. I do wish the Maverick had a 6ft bed, but I'm trying to convince myself that a 4.5ft bed would be enough for my needs, since they engineered the bed and tailgate so intelligently. I would benefit immensely from the hybrid as a city dweller. The idea of 40 MPG sounds unreal considering I'm accustomed to getting 16 MPG city in my current truck.
Great review as always…everyone says it’s on the Escape platform but they never mention the reliability of the new Escape Hybrid or the 2.0L. Would be interesting to know what the big issues are.
Overall the 2.0 Ecoboost has been reliable over the 9 years it's been offered. And the Hybrid powertrain is very similar to what Ford has been using for about a decade including the 2nd gen Escape and Fusion which were very reliable and often used as Taxis
11:55 that guy spoke so much truth in that lil blurb, they cling to that quad cab if it was an extended cab purposed for just your things and not people this same size having like a 6+ ft bed that'd be a good choice. in the 90s we had no problem with just 2 doors and then these people got obsessed with putting 4 doors on trucks, and then jeep wranglers ect. I should hurry up and patent my Hexcab concept before someone else does.
@@JG-mg3if The hybrid will obviously be more efficient, and more reliable long term. The turbo is obviously faster, gives you the option of awd, and increases your towing capacity, but payload is the same as the hybrid at 1500 pounds. Depends on if you prefer efficiency/low operating costs, or power and max towing capacity.
Nice review and much appreciated. I have preordered a Hybrid Maverick. I'm tired of taking my nice car with the trunk loaded with garage that I take to the dump every week. I'm tired of putting bags of mulch or bags of loam in my car. I need a pickup truck. I wish the Hybrid is AWD, but I'll take Front Wheel Drive. I also think at some point this will be an all electric vehicle like the F150, at which point, I will move into that. Thank you for this review. I eagerly await this truck.
I think this will be great for weekend campers and people that shop at garden stores and move snowblowers and stuff. I have an F 350 manual trans with a V 10. I tow large ski boats and trailers covered in railroad ties and plate steel.. i actually use my large truck and it works well for my family.. and I. I have loaned my truck to many friends so they can drive accords and camrys. So everyone does not need a huge truck, if people share a little.
Traded my '17 Ram 1500, don't tow and the Maverick has 50 more lb payload rating. I was averaging 480 miles on a 33 gallon tank, they're claiming the hybrid (what I'm getting) will get 500 miles on a 13 gallon tank, the damn thing will pay for itself
The reviewers and manufacturers keep talking about carrying plywood, mulch and ATVs… honestly most of us don’t carry any of those things hence no need to throw that as a selling point. We are city dwellers who mostly haul trash bags and small appliances like a new fridge/stove from BestBuy on Black Friday or a cooler on the 4th of July, Memorial Day and pumpkins for Halloween. That’s it! lol
Ford Nailed it again IMO. Really thinking about buying one of these trucks myself, the only reason I need a truck in the first place is needing the bed for motorcycles/dirtbikes + my ATV. This is pretty much a car with a bed, when you get the AWD Maverick you get independent suspension at all four corners which = amazing ride quality. That's my main gripe with trucks; they have solid rear axles and don't ride very well. I had a '16 Ram 1500 coil sprung and it rode better than any truck I've ever owned, but rode like crap in comparison to a full-independent setup. The bad ride quality is annoying when you drive alot, especially downtown on crummy roads. GO FORD GO!
Do you have 4' long motorcycles? It is a very short bed. The tailgate only adds a foot. Most bikes are 6 to 8 feet long. Cruisers even longer. You might build an extension with an I-beam or two, but that is kind of dicey leaving the bike hanging out the back.
Always the best Tom , keep them coming. Me and my wife test drove the Santa Cruz and she loved it, when I said the Maverick might be a better choice "truck wise" she said you already have a truck , I want a daily driver that is more upscale that I can still haul all my flowers etc. So guess who won that one.
All the reviews are hard pressed to find anything REALLY wrong..and all are very pleasantly surprised at the good value and quality. I really want an EV but with prices being 2x the Maverick and living in a building with no chargers....
This baby truck is awesome. When it comes to automotive greats, there's the new Civic and then there's the Maverick as far as I'm concerned (based and what others are saying anyway)
I drove my 2016 Mazda CX 3 thru dirt, gravel unmaintanted rural rocky, with giant deep holes on the roads and trails with zero issues. FWD, Snow, Ice, no problems. It is lower to the ground so you have to careful but doable! I wouldn't attempt mudding & rock crawling in it. I have a Lariat Hybrid on order with a ETA this month. I will take this truck anywhere without a worry
Great review as always! I have an F150 and I sometimes think about buying something smaller. I want to drive this and the Santa Cruz to see how they feel. Next gen Ranger and Tacoma are also on my list.
US needs a return to sub twenty thousand dollars pickups. Very important to end users. The power train seems serviceable. I personally like simple V6. But the hybrid and 2.0T are going to work. I like roofline profile a lot. Thanks for sharing. Yes
Good video, as always. I do like how Ford was able to hide, or eliminate, the horrible front overhang that inflicts most fwd vehicles, including this trucks platform mate the Bronco Sport.
@@JMacGyver1 I'll have to look at one in more detail, to be fair, everytime I've seen one, it's been driving in the other direction, so didn't have a long time to evaluate the proportions.
Great Review Tom. I feel that Ford missed an opportunity to offer the Hybrid as an AWD model. This is an interesting choice considering that the Escape Hybrid offers it and they share the same platform.
The thing about this truck is that it is pretty cheap, fully loaded packages come at 33k, it’s AWD or hybrid fwd. I told my father why didn’t he just get this one, but he wanted something big. Y’all, my mom got the sienna, and my dad drives a Cruze. A hybrid small truck wouldn’t hurt the budget and this has more things than what my dads truck have. Maybe I’ll get it later on.

Excellent review! Having grown up driving Toyota trucks I am excited to see someone building a truck like this. A lot of value under $25,000
Probably the best car review I’ve watched on RUclips. Very informative, very professional. It reminds me of Motor Week.
Oh, and now I want the Maverick.
This is going to be a big hit for Ford...
I've been driving a 1st gen Tacoma. A 98! It's held up remarkably well.
We also have a fusion and a ranger, both fantastic!
It looks pretty cool, like something I’d consider buying even though I’m not a truck person.
Nice to see you traveling again doing these reviews.
Mine was supposed to be built this week. Just waiting on the email. Can't wait.
This is going to be a great vehicle for a lot of people. Great job Ford.
Another thing..This will also be able to fit in a common size garage. Thats a big plus for many too.
Wow. Such a reasonable, measured review. So unique in this day and age. Really appreciate your honestly. Keep up the great work!
I just built a Mav at the dealership today. XLT 2.0L ecoboost with the premium package and the fX4 option. All in was just under 40K Canadian.
Any idea when these are getting built? Do you have an estimated delivery date?
@@sappyjohnson they are already being built, mine will enter production in the next month or so and should get it at the dealership around the end/start of the year
And you will save lots with that hybrid system... 40 mpg is amazing especially for a truck
@@louisbarningham yeah i live in a major city and sit in traffic most days so that 40mpg city is super enticing, and with my current truck not getting as good as it used to(still better then any mid-full size truck) but going from around 20-24mpg to 40 will be a huge savings each month
Yeah, should last even longer than the old rangers, especially the hybrid Mavericks. Those things will be unkillable.
Fantastic, Tom! Was really looking forward to your take because I have a hybrid Maverick on order. You have certainly given me no reason to cancel that.
Bought a first edition lariat today! Very excited!
I love that the interior is rugged like the bronco
The idea that you could travel the United States for cheaper than ever is awesome, I'll definitely be going to the mountains and beaches of north Carolina again and again, I've placed an order for A lariet Maverick for 33 thousand dollars with everything that I would need. Will be buying one of those smaller tents that will fit in the back of the truck!
Gonna be a big seller. College kids, newlyweds and seniors will buy them up. While the new lightning will be parked in every driveway in the burbs.
The things that deterred me from buying a truck was price point and gas mileage. This little bugger addresses both in fantastic fashion. Easy buy
It's an eCVT, not a conventional pulley based CVT so it's not really the same thing.
Yes, I'd like to know more about how the drive train works since my motto is "death before CVT" and my understanding is this is more robust and no slop.
@@JSMacondo alek on autos goes into more depth on that
@@JSMacondo it's functionally identical to the Toyota Hybrid system.
@Artur not really. The name is appropriate to what it is. It's people's fault for not properly educating themselves before complaining about it.
This is the return to the old Ranger and I miss my old Ranger!! I still love my F150 but the Maverick would fit me a lil better. Great review.
This is nothing like the old Ranger, except that it is a pickup too.
Love the hybrid, wish ford will make plug-in hybrid truck in the near future.
Another great review!
I have an XLT hybrid on order. Can't wait to get it (and hope to do so by end of January 2022!)
Same here
Good choice!
I saw a couple being delivered here in Kentucky, very nice looking truck.
Same, the hybrids mpg and price was too good not to buy
Same. Hybrid, lux package, co-pilot360.
Maverick Hybrid is towable 4 down like behind a motorhome, this thing will be very appealing in that regard.
Excellent review Tom. Completely agree with your remarks about the desperate need for SYNC4 interface
Love the interior, glad ford is thinking outside their own box with this vehicle overall. Great mileage. That will attract a lot to this vehicle. I will keep my 17 supercab Raptor. Love it every single day that I drive it... Which is daily...😀
Do you hate that navy blue dash tho?
Very cool. I see a large market for this. Especially among the suburban family with a two vehicles and thing for sports.
And the Hybrid powertrain is very similar to what Ford has been using for about a decade including the 2nd gen Escape and Fusion which were very reliable and often used as Taxis
we have an escape and its fantastic
Very reliable, especially the hybrid. They regularly last 500k or more as taxi's with virtually no issues.
That's awesome! I didn't know Ford Pass had no subscription fee.
1st time seeing one of his videos. By far the most thorough one I've seen compared to KBB and Edmunds. You won my subscription to your channel!
And to think they need an entire production crew...
Hybrid for sure.I would buy it
Well Done, Enjoyed your take on this Gem...
I’m seriously thinking of getting one of these. It’s very well-suited to my needs and many of my wants.
Same, just not sure if I prefer the hybrid or turbo..
I really didn’t see the Ford and the Hyundai as courting the same people. Good point.
BTW a tailgate damper is available through Ford Accessories for $50 for DIY installation.
That yellow in the beginning is gorgeous!
It’ll never be as slow as a Masada B2000!
1993 ranger 98 horsepower
Good job Tom your video has aged well even 3 years later.
Looking at a 2024 XLT all loaded up for only $34k - on the lot and no markups!
I think Ford has finally caught up with production.
Love your reviews Tom. Would be great for a PHEV version of this!!
True
@@DrivenCarReviews Please explain why a plug in would be great? I think its great getting away from the cord IMHO.
Enjoyed the video Tom. You do a great job presenting these.
That’s it! lol
That's true. But people always overbuy and visuals like this comfort them.
@@STho205 or he could put it in diagonal if that works
@@STho205 So you get a motorcycle trailer, easy to load and unload, and you retain the space in the bed.
Happy wife....
Ford’s got a home run here.. it’s a capable vehicle, small enough to park in the garage, and the hybrid gets 40 mpg.
will buy one! love the truck! Thank you FORD!Proud to see American company coming up great products!
Great review! Thanks. XL pkg, with and will be replacing my pos outback. Can't wait for it to arrive.
Can you do light off-roading in the hybrid? Just going through a trail to camp since its a truck?
I drove my 2016 Mazda CX 3 thru dirt, gravel unmaintanted rural rocky, with giant deep holes on the roads and trails with zero issues. FWD, Snow, Ice, no problems. It is lower to the ground so you have to careful but doable! I wouldn't attempt mudding & rock crawling in it. I have a Lariat Hybrid on order with a ETA this month. I will take this truck anywhere without a worry
9:16 Tailgate dampers are available from Ford for $50 👍
Why does someone need this? I don’t understand how it’s a pro ?
Great video as always. This is a great option as a do it all vehicle especially as the hybrid. The best of both worlds.
With the exception of that front grill, that’s a great looking truck!
Best maverick review that I’ve seen yet!
Great Review! You've earned another subscriber with your concise reviewing style and superb editing.
I must say that was a pretty cool nissian frontier ad. It did make me want it.
Am I high? I could have sworn the front overhang on the bronco sport wasn't that long. Maybe it just hides it well.
@@KB-bh9hp I think the Bronco Sport front overhang is the worst thing about an otherwise good looking suv.
@@JMacGyver1 I'll have to look at one in more detail, to be fair, everytime I've seen one, it's been driving in the other direction, so didn't have a long time to evaluate the proportions.
Tom Voelk: the kinda guy who remembers the Ford Courier!
Great Review Tom. I feel that Ford missed an opportunity to offer the Hybrid as an AWD model. This is an interesting choice considering that the Escape Hybrid offers it and they share the same platform.
Yup. wouldn't surprise me to see powertrain changes in the future.
It’ll come. Just a matter of time.
It’s gotta be coming
It’s what I want. We don’t need 4WD often here, but when we do, you’re glad you have it
The thing about this truck is that it is pretty cheap, fully loaded packages come at 33k, it’s AWD or hybrid fwd. I told my father why didn’t he just get this one, but he wanted something big. Y’all, my mom got the sienna, and my dad drives a Cruze. A hybrid small truck wouldn’t hurt the budget and this has more things than what my dads truck have. Maybe I’ll get it later on.
Seems like people are looking for performance of Ferrari, off road capability of land rover, hauling capability of Ford F350 and Luxury and comfort of Mercedes S class. Get over it folks, if you can get one of these XLTs for less than $25K, count your blessing.
Amen.
I am really contemplating this and trading in my Tundra for the awd version. I love the tundra and how it moves.
You won't regret it.
Thank you! I ordered the Lariat
