@@youcancallmemaster2680 I only partially agree. Hybrid vehicles, CVTs and FWD have their places, and are here to stay. Don't forget FWD is the most popular drive train at least in the United States and has been for a very long time. It all depends on what you need/what you're looking for. A box truck that's empty will easily get stuck in 8 inches of snow. A FWD SUV will have a much easier time. Looking at the Toyota Highlander, the 2021 is rated to tow 5,000 lbs. either FWD or AWD. All that being said, I do agree that using a Hybrid drive train on a truck is a little strange but don't forget trucks used to be electric a long time ago. Electric motors give you full torque on circuit closing. My problem is that these are Ford products and while I may buy an F-150 if I needed one, I'm not too sure about anything else Ford makes. I would rather buy a Hybrid truck from Toyota but there must be a reason why they haven't made a Hybrid version of either the Tacoma or the Tundra that I'm aware of.
The base model, with its high city mileage, cheap cost, and utilitarian features is perfect as a fleet vehicle for service calls in urban environments. It compliments the Transit Connect fleet vans.
@@JohnMiller-zn9pf I wish. We got a new Ranger to replace one of the old Rangers that was totaled. They’re too tall. The lifting equipment can’t lift up engines or 55 gallon drum’s high enough to get them in the bed. Hybrids scare some corporations, a lot of shops refuse to work on them. So being potentially forced to go to a dealership depending on the market area is not something my company is really interested in doing. I hope my Manager is wrong about that last part. These things really do seem perfect for parts delivery. We’ll probably have to get a Transit City to replace the 4 cylinder Frontier if it gets totaled just to be able to load up certain things.

@@jamiemarier5647 Not only is the 2.5L is Tank of a Engine, but the hybrid drive train is based on Toyota's Hybrid model. The CVT is not what you think when you hear CVT. There is no belt, but two electric motors and some planetary gearsets. No need for a Torque converter either. As we know with the Prius the design is rock solid. The base model isn't bad, but never get base base model. Either need to tack on a few options, or just move up to XLT. Still low 20K's is a great price for a Hybrid, a Ford Escape cost way more for the Hybrid option and it is damn near the same thing, just not a truck.
It is a lot of vehicule. People may write off but getting a TRUCK for that low, it's unheard of anywhere else. But they do need to offer a king or single cab option for a longer bed.

@@Park_Place yes i know, which is the point of my comment. currently not interested in purchasing one unless an AWD hybrid option becomes available in a future model.
good snow tires would help way more in snow then awd would, because you can have as many tires as you want getting power, if the tires are physically incapable of getting grip, it's not going to matter
"Everything you need, nothing you don't" - admirable by Ford. Especially in today's market where everything is dialed up to a 11 to maximize profit. Now the question is, can you actually find one at that price!
The “waving hand” is the Auto Hold feature. When you come to a complete stop you can remove your foot from the brake pedal and the vehicle will hold in place until you hit the accelerator.
@@rustlesee It's not LA but I've commuted in out of Charlotte NC for ten years and half of that time was during interstate construction in a stick shift truck.
I'll be honest - I like it. I hate the auto start/stop crap, but sitting in traffic (I'm in Charlotte, too) it is quite a handy feature to have. I have it in my 2020 Explorer ST but not sure if it will be in the Bronco I have coming (if it ever gets built).
I love this channel and the reviews of the vehicles. This might sound dumb and I might get made fun of but it would be nice if you guys would sit a baby car seat in the back row to see if there is enough room for one and be able to drive comfortably. I know trucks and some SUVs are not really for families but there are a lot of guys that want these vehicles that do have small children. Just a thought that would be beneficial to this dad atleast.
It’s not a dumb question. When our daughter was a baby, I took a car seat with me when test driving vehicles. If her car seat wouldn’t fit without the front seats moved way forward then I moved on to a different vehicle.
Thats a great question. I had a standard cab ranger. When it came time to upgrade I wanted another ranger but the super cab only had those stupid little jump seats and nowhere to put a child seat. So I buried my head in the sand and got a crew cab s10.
I could see these being incredibly useful for parts delivery. When I worked at autozone we had colorado and frontier pickups and we almost never used the bed and when we did we almost never needed the full 6' length. But we did need a pickup when customers would order things in bulk ( oil, DEF, brake cleaner.) Something like this seemes much more adequate. Not to mention since most of the driving was city we would benefit from a hybrid.
The base model looks honestly perfect for me. I'm about to buy a house and i'll need a small truck for renovations. The MPG itself makes sense for me to replace my car with it
I agree. That's why I don't like sedans, they are not practical. When I got my house it needed (and still do) lots of work and I could not fit large bulky items in my trunk, even though it was very big on the inside, the opening sucks so I got a small crossover and folded the seats. By doing that a even fitted a washer. I'm tempted to get a base maverick as today's trucks are wayyyyy over priced.
@@davidzavala337 I'm in the exact same boat. My lil' crossover is great but space is limited even with the seats folded down. I will need construction materials, equipment, and i want to be able to put my bike in the car without needing to install a mount for it. Just throw it in the bed and go.
I think this truck was made for someone like me. I've had a sedan for 18 years. I was looking at hatchbacks to add some usability while still keeping fuel economy. 37mpg and a decent bed. Sure it's not the most premium, but it's a great concept
Great review. I actually love the XL version. It's what I've been looking for in a "basic" truck for so long. Everything you need, with a little more, and nothing else. And for the price, it's perfect! Can't wait to see one.
There are plenty of basic trucks out there. What I think you mean, is an affordable basic truck. It’s like $30k just for a full sized single cab 4x2 work truck these days. Let alone if you want a basic “consumer” trim 4-door, you’re looking at 40,000+. Yea the basic trucks exist but they are priced insanely. This one brings back some normalcy
I think I did hear that the cab is a few inches bigger on the Maverick, but your trading bed space and other capabilities. I'm torn between the two. That bed size on the Maverick could kill it though, don't think I can do with less than about a 6' bed.
This is the best vehicle to come out in a long time. Who doesn’t want a cheap vehicle thats seats 4 maybe 5 people of you’re brave and has a bed to haul things and get some of the best mpg.
I'm super excited for this. The price point is crazy low and I think it proves an interesting alternative to compact cars like the Corolla if not only for the price being so close. I can see active couples or a small family using this trucklet as their full time vehicle. I hope it does well.
@@mblake0420 I think what he means is no other vehicle at 19k brand new will be as useful as this. Are there better purchases? Yes, but will your Tacoma get 40mpg? Do you NEED a Tacoma? Good job on Ford on giving people more options

The Maverick is pretty impressive for a small pickup. Only thing I wish it had was the option of AWD on the Hybrid powertrain. The older Escape Hybrids had optional 4WD and used an Atkinson-Cycle 4-Cylinder similar to this one (though a bit less power), so why not let the Maverick and the new Escapes (which the Maverick platform is based on) have a option of AWD on Hybrids?
The base XL. If I channel Roman, " everything you need, nothing you don't". These are going to sell very well. I can see fleets buying the XL and delivery companies. Great review.
I agree, I've personally looked at the XLT. It has a few of the extra bells and whistles that I would like to have but an XLT with ford 360 and the luxury package for under 26 k is a great deal imo. Especially when a Honda civic would be at a similar price
Let’s just hope the roll out is better than the bronco. Bronco had a few too many issues, which most companies have wirh new models. I went with the new ranger, but I do like these
At this point in my life I couldn't have a vehicle that is that small. That being said Ford really knocked it out of the park with the design and features. I hope that the rest of the industry picks up on this and starts making it the norm for all vehicles. The large door cup holders, accessible charging for every seat, charging in the bed, and the 3d printed interchangeable items were great.
Especially those bright-silver steelies. They make it look more finished and intentional than black ones that just look like snow-tire wheels or the plastic hubcaps are missing.
I got a 2023 Maverick hybrid and average 47 MPG combined. I love the high ride I love the firm ride I do use the truck as a truck sometimes and I have zero complaints about it. Android auto is super easy to use and you can use it either directly or through Bluetooth and overall super satisfied with what I consider to be a high quality Ford vehicle.
I really like the interior design of the XLT. The different bottle holders on the door panels and how big cups sit low on the center console. The cellphone holder is a plus!
Hoping this does really well and forces other manufacturers to get into the "small" truck market. Love the size of 1990's small trucks before they all got huge, but they all rusted away here in the north and can't find them used.
I still don't think it deserves to be called a "compact" truck, but I'm actually really impressed. It looks like you get a lot of value regardless of which trim you get. I love the XL in this video. Part of it is the color. Ford really does a beautiful blue.

I looked up the numbers, in overall length and weight they are almost identical. that's up to the 2012 (last year for the previous ranger). they've removed 2ft from the bed and added it to the cab for the maverick. also, both are comparable in power and towing when matching the non-hybrid maverick to the 2012 ranger.
The transmission in the Maverick is not a CVT as you know them to be, with belts and pulleys. It makes use of a single planetary gearset and two electric motors to create infinite ratios.
I've heard that the hybrid model can be towed behind a motorhome, because it has the same motor/transmission as the Escape hybrid, which can be flat towed. If it can be towed I'll be very interested in purchasing one.

I would definitely take the base model over the loaded one. I love the key start and simplicity over all the tech. Would like to have the all wheel drive with the higher towing, but the efficiency of the hybrid is amazing. Would be a good replacement for my car while keeping my full size truck for doing real work.

When lookng at the value of the base XL, it makes me wonder whether it will be unobtanium as Ford would limit production of it due to its usage as a loss leader. With how expensive everything is right now, I don't see how Ford could make money at $20k with a standard hybrid powertrain. That's insane value when you consider that you can't even buy a Corolla or Civic for under $20k anymore. These Mavericks are going to sell hot as even the Lariat isn't a bad deal.
I believe ford already said that dealers are not going to stock base model hybrids in large numbers. Average msrp's will probably by around 28k I'm betting
Right. The Lariat with the off road package (which gives you AWD) is still around $30k, which is still insanely affordable considering what features you get vs what you'd get from other trucks at the same price point

I was definitely interested in the base model until I heard "CVT transmission" I'll wait and see how they hold up to towing before I make a final decision
Long-term reliability wise, the Hybrid will be your best option. Sure, the EcoBoost has more power. But it has a turbo, which only lasts over 100k miles. It also has a 8-speed transmission, which means more moving parts compared to the eCVT. If you want a towing vehicle, then I would recommend the EcoBoost. But if you only need a truck to haul things in the bed occasionally, the Hybrid would do just fine.

I’ve had hybrid on order since June. Can’t wait. Selling our 04 F150 because that 5.4 V8 is sweet but gets 14mpg lol. And the Maverick will do 90% of what the F150 does. Currently looking at an Escape and was excited to read (presumably correct) the Maverick was built on the Escape platform. The only issue is - Why didn't Ford include AWD on the hybrid like on the Escape - not for offroad, but safer winter driving. Love the fact that can do Home Depot/Costco runs with large bulky purchases - not even having to rip 4x8 sheets to transport like in the Escape like I did this week in my current SUV. The 2.0L, while nice, has a major shortcoming that rules it out. The unspoken advantage of the hybrid is that it is one of a decreasing number of cars that can be towed 4 wheels down behind an RV. Coupled with being a relatively light vehicle around 3500 lbs, that is huge! Both FWD and AWD Escape hybrids are approved...but none of the other powertrains. For a truck, would need to move up to a 4200lb and more capable Ranger 4x4 (not FWD) for RV towing. The truck offers so much more than the SUV but the lack of AWD makes it a difficult decision.

Definitely, I ordered a hybrid for a small handyman business due to its size.
I am pleasantly surprised by the base version, better equipped than I anticipated.
Agreed. It is what it is; An affordable truck. If you're willing to pay more then 35k and want higher towing capability this is likely not the truck for you. Lariat doesn't make much sense to me on this model.

Wow, this is a lot of vehicle for the price, both high and low priced trims are great values for everything they come with. Great job Ford!
Trust me you are the market these companies are after
That is FAR from a dumb question. In fact, it's a perfect question. As another responder said here, you ARE the demographic for this vehicle.
It’s not a dumb question. When our daughter was a baby, I took a car seat with me when test driving vehicles. If her car seat wouldn’t fit without the front seats moved way forward then I moved on to a different vehicle.
Our last just moved to booster-only, so I remember those days we'll. Fantastic question.

Ive watched about a dozen videos today on these mavericks. You are the first person to mention and demonstrate the adjustable steering wheel.
Maverick appears to have more leg room in rear seat than my Ranger…
I think I did hear that the cab is a few inches bigger on the Maverick, but your trading bed space and other capabilities. I'm torn between the two. That bed size on the Maverick could kill it though, don't think I can do with less than about a 6' bed.

The older Escape Hybrids had optional 4WD and used an Atkinson-Cycle 4-Cylinder similar to this one (though a bit less power), so why not let the Maverick and the new Escapes (which the Maverick platform is based on) have a option of AWD on Hybrids?

At this point in my life I couldn't have a vehicle that is that small. That being said Ford really knocked it out of the park with the design and features. I love your reviews. I’m so glad to see Ford bringing back the small trucks. I ran hundreds of Rangers in my business years ago and now I can buy them again!
Peoples who say it only tow 1200lbs are thick headed. It's not build for heavy towing. It's a truck that get 40 mpg with 195hp and get cost less than $20k. You can't find truck less than $25k or hybrid less than $23k. There's so much use for this truck. I guaranteed it will be a best seller.
I’m heavily considering a lowest-cost-possible awd maverick. It looks so good
I've watched a lot of walk-arounds. You did the best demonstration of steering wheel adjustment. I was really concerned about the leg room - so thanks. Looking forward to the TFL reviews of towing capability of the Maverick (if any) and the Lighting.
Super stoked for my maverick!
What happend to your channel?

So am I. Ordered 10/22 but no idea when I'll see it. Got the XLT, hybrid, lux package and a few options for about $30k out the door. 0% financing. Can't wait.
When i first seen these when they were announced i hated them. But i have kinda grown to like them. They have their place. It seems like a good deal for 20k
Great video and can't wait for behind the wheel driving on this! Hopefully Ford makes an AWD hybrid version as that would be perfect
When will you do a tow test with the 4000 pound tow option?
I was definitely interested in the base model until I heard "CVT transmission" I'll wait and see how they hold up to towing before I make a final decision
It's a eCVT which is much different from the older CVTs. All gears, no belts, as I understand it, and very reliable.
If they can bring 4K towing to the hybrid, that's all I want.
Ranger would probably get that
@@Striker50_ a lot of trucks can do that, but can they get 40 mpg?
Exactly. I'd like to be able to tow a car to the track or boat to the lake. The only thing this is missing is just a little more towing compacity
@@VashTheAverage just tow it anyway 😂
I have a Toyota Yaris which isn't supposed to tow anything and doesn't even have a rated towing capacity but I've had my car filled to the brim and towed a U-Haul 4*8 trailer up a mountain no problem.
I like all the thoughtful stuff like the DIY options for bed and cargo accessories and the plugs in the rear so you don't have to tee off the brake lights to add stuff.
Looking forward to seeing the driving reviews. I learned a few new things today. Thanks.
I didn’t even know you could still buy a new vehicle for $20k! It’s definitely a small truck, but for some people, that’s all that they need. Kind of reminds me of my ‘98 Mazda B4000 I had in college (a fancy Ford Ranger). I loved that little truck and it was just perfect for a daily driver and how I used it. Maybe there’s a reason why I’ve owned 5 Fords and have mostly good things to say about them.
The hand that waves is the keep break hold button. When you step on break, the car holds the break down for you, so no need to keep foot on break
In my 2017 Lincoln, the button simply says "Auto hold". Makes more sense than a waving hand.
@@ethinos2719 yes our bronco sport has this button. The mav is identical to the bronco sports all the stuff inside is the same exact buttons dials etc.
phonetics... anyone? anyone? awww just gimme a brake...
My base xl has been made and just have to wait a couple more weeks for delivery. Cant wait!
I'm impressed with the features and capability. I would have wanted one with an NA non-hybrid manual trans just to keep it simple and fun. I get that's not where the cash is at now though.
One really nice thing about Ford is the remote start via the app. You dont need heated or cooled seats if you have that.
Correction, You can't get 4k Tow Package with the FWD. Need to go AWD.
The 4K package with FWD is a delayed introduction.
@@TFLtruck no its not available at all now.
@@TFLtruck No, Ford killed the 4K/FWD package last week and is giving free AWD upgrades if you already had an order in. It was going to be delayed introduction but it’s now no longer available
Amazing that these journalists can make such easy mistakes like this, like also claiming that you can get RWD with the Ecoboost (around 7:40)
I ordered the ecoboost with 4K towing package (and received free awd from Ford ), but in XL trim. Keeping costs down but still capable.
Since the Maverick is built on the same platform as the Escape and Bronco Sport, do you think Ford will eventually give us a Maverick with the off road capability of a Bronco Sport Badlands? Maybe a Maverick Tremor?
I don't see myself wanting or needing a vehicle like this, but I am genuinely impressed with what Ford has done. A $20k truck that outclasses most sedans at their own game (efficiency and comfort) while still being more practical. The ecoboost is cool as well, but I just can't quite grasp the concept of a turbo 4 in a pickup, as I'd be so scared to overuse it and I'd feel the need to baby it. And at $36k, I could get a much more usable truck for my needs in that price range.
I’ve had hybrid on order since June. Can’t wait. Selling our 04 F150 because that 5.4 V8 is sweet but gets 14mpg lol. And the Maverick will do 90% of what the F150 does. The remaining 10% is our FX4 and towing capabilities but I’ve used either of those maybe 5 times in 17 years of that truck’s life.
I bought a 2012 base F150 4x4 automatic new and the silver steelies rusted quickly and the lack of electric windows and cruise soon became irritating. Only kept it 18 months. The previous truck was a 1998 XLT, manual with cruise and power windows. Still my favorite vehicle and I kept it 15 years. It was a daily driver for 5 years on a 40 mile commute. Sometimes the extra bucks save you in the long run because the short sale of a vehicle you end up not liking is a big loss.
I can’t wait to get mine I ordered a fully loaded maverick lariat without the sunroof option and it was built last week. And actually the base and loaded models are very inexpensive for what you get with each👍🏽👍🏽
How much is the total came at ?

@@IMGONEIN60 I don't like it cause it uses battery for Reverse. On hybrid
My favourite trim and engine option for the Maverick would be the XLT with the luxury package sliding rear window spray in bed liner and a Tano cover
And tech package for the safety stuff
Waiting for the “this ain’t a truck!!!” from the same people constantly spewing that shit on the Ridgeline
somehow the Maverick and Santa Cruz escape that
They are all ElCaminos !
I mean for reference my 2019 miata has the same or near the same hp and tq (181hp 155tq) as that base model hybrid....that think may have a bed and a tow hitch but I doubt it will be doing any serious work likes it's larger siblings
@@justins21482 How much stuff can you put in the miata? It’s a Escape with a bed!
@@justins21482 Small Toyota pickups going back to the 80’s have had 4 cylinder options with as little as 115HP, and that never kept people from using them as cheap work trucks. Maybe not for towing, but for contractors, builders, etc. there’s enough power and room for everything you might need to carry.
I really dig what's happening with the midsize and smaller truck markets. Just recently picked up a Ram Laramie so the kids' car seats would fit well but these little trucks are sweet.
Love the steelies. They should offer them as with higher as well, especially with the 4x4 models. Also, Ford should bring the Maverick to Europe.
look for strength tests on YT, steel vs aluminum wheels. I was shocked that Aluminum is much stronger.
@@slingbart705 That might be true in some context, but not in the context of a wheel. A steel wheel will deform when damaged, allowing you to bend it back into shape with a hammer. An aluminum wheel will crack or chip which is unfixable beyond a certain level of damage.
@@PringleSn1ffer I've had aluminum wheels both bend and crack apart. I'll take steel wheels anyday. Only downside to steelies is if you don't keep them clean they can rust over time
I’m ordering a Maverick to compliment my 3/4 ton pickup. This will be an excellent commuter when I do not need to pull a trailer or haul a lot of material.
honestly, if they added cruise to the base, it's all I would want or need
Same here. I love doing road trips on my days off, so cruise control is my best friend. I love everything about the Maverick but that ONE omission.
Wait, lol. No cruise control?
Really? Cruise control is still an option?
@@wigletron2846 it is on the base maverick
@@JohnMiller-zn9pf I test drove a base kia forte last year and it had cruise control. It can't cost ford that much to include it. Kinda like how crank windows aren't really a thing anymore
We want to see the mpg for the hybrid both City and Highway real world come on TFL let’s get them numbers out let’s see what the Lie o meter says compared to real world numbers.
I own a fusion hybrid with the exact same drivetrain. At the weight claimed, I have no doubt I could routinely achieve 32-37 mpg on the highway and easily break the mid 40's in city driving.
It's the same system as the escape. Which can easily do better than what it's actually rated for.
So idk what lies you're talking about
@@nighttimestalker probably referring to the C-Max hybrid exaggerated mpg (47 mpg) when the C-Max first came out in 2013. After fierce public exposer of the exaggerated range, Ford came back and said " the actual range is now @ 42 mpg.
