I thought I'd get a corolla as my commuter and keep an old f-150 for towing needs, but for the same price, I could get a hybrid maverick instead. Pretty tempting
Love the positivity I'm seeing. There are still those who think this is a bad vehicle, but it's because they can't differentiate between that they like/need and what's a good product.
I agree - I think it sits in a good spot in Ford's pickup truck lineup with the Ranger the top off-road model for those who want that, F-150 for max towing and hauling capability and the Maverick for more modest capabilities and a modest price.
This vehicle is perfect for the person who was thinking about getting a Focus, Corolla, Civic, or Elantra, but wants a bit more utility on that budget. Well done Ford.
Actually it's a lot bigger and more upscale than a Focus or a Corolla. Those cars are really small and basic, with no room in them. The Maverick is built on the same frame as the Escape and Bronco which are mid-size vehicles so there is a lot more room in it then those "starter" cars. It's only a little less than a foot shorter than the Ranger.
Indeed. When all other manufacturers are charging a premium for hybrid, Ford decided to make hybrid the default and the least expensive. There's a lot of people who either don't need to haul a lot, or already have a truck that is capable of towing a great deal already. Imagine how much gas this country can save as people migrate to this truck, and perhaps other vehicles that will take the same path.

Only if Ford will have any on Dealers Lots, then they might sell a few, but O Wait, there's that Great Chip and Magnesium Shortage and are Great Inflation so this generation might not do so well
I would want the XLT, with 4K towing probably, though it might make more sense financially to get the XLT hybrid, and whenever you need to tow more than a couple thousand pounds, you can just rent a truck. The payload is good enough for 90% of what I do, and 40 mpg is incredible.
Everyone I talk to says "Oh I NEED the turbo for towing" and I think they're missing the point of this little truck. Like you said if you need something more robust for that once in a while big tow rent a uhaul. The turbo's milage is fine, but it's really not worth losing that 40mpg
40mpg as a base $20k part time truck is the real strength of the Maverick Spending 30k for the XLT at 25mpg out the door means you are in Ranger/Tacoma/Frontier territory. Why buy a Maverick. Keep it cheap, keep it simple, you'll like a Ford. Posh it out and Fords are rip offs.
@@jeffloucks2120 I'm going to wait and see. I'll never buy a new tyranny from Ford. I think this was in the Flex, which was an underwhelming car. However this is a new drivetrain too. I figure buying a turned in one year lease at 36k miles and maybe $14k.
This is a decent vehicle for a young working person or anyone with a limited income, but with a small landscaping business. In a few years you might see these things on the used market for $16k-$20k
If the AWD FX4 can do well in snow, ice and mud for traction control this would awesome option versus a small economy car due to fact the trunk Is a functional mini bed.
@Aaron R Espinoza Ford also sells trucks that make yours look like a toy. What's your point? That this isn't for you? Congrats on coming to that profound realization all on your own, we are all very impressed. But guess what, full size trucks aren't for everybody either. This thing is a viable alternative to compact cars in both cost and efficiency while offering way more ability and versatility. Anybody who knows anything about the market can see how impressive that is, even most of us who would never buy one.
Nice review, they should throw this truck into a house purchase. It seems like it's perfect for some home improvement, gardening, taking the kids to their sporting events etc. Better performance then I thought it would have. Make your own easy upgrades aspect is really intriguing.
These Mavericks are the perfect little city truck, they seem to fill the same role as the old school 1/4 ton pickups but even better. I wish there was one with a more advanced AWD (locking diffs and low range) and a bit of a lift, but then it would probably start eating into the Ranger market if they did.
Not sure how they could add a 2-speed x-fer case to a FWD based platform. The Bronco Sport (Badlands pkg) does have a locker available for the rear, so if demand is there, they could/might add that sometime later for the Maverick. It will never be a true rock-crawling, Baja-runner, type truck.

@@chandlerthoma9173 I agree with you there. Every vehicle to come out of Ford's Mexico factory has been a clunker. Only CVT I would trust is the Toyota one with the launch gear.
@@chandlerthoma9173 As has been pointed out in numerous other videos. A hybrid electric CVT is not the same as the CVT in gas engine vehicles (often cited as a Belt CVT). Hybrid Electric CVTs have been very reliable. All Ford hybrids have used them, all Toyota hybrids use them, and I assume every other hybrid on the market uses them. CVTs mated to traditional combustion engines have had varying degrees of reliability, with most bordering on unreliable, but again Hybrid CVTs have actually been very reliable.
They are lightyears behind in technology on all their other platforms. I doubt they're ever catch up. Their approach is big engines, ignore what provides best utility. They'd rather just show videos of their trucks running over the Maverick than actually trying to compete.
@@chandlerthoma9173 Look up what a eCVT is. It's not what you think. Ford and Toyota eCVTs are proven time and time again to be more reliable than a conventional automatic. These use two motors and the engines power and blends them together with a planetary gear set. eCVTs also have always used MG1 (Motor generator 1) to operate reverse, and it works perfectly fine. They have absolutely nothing in common with a belt CVT like Nissan, Subaru, Mitsubishi CVTs use. They're dull to drive, but most people are not looking for driving dynamics in a Hybrid. They're looking for reliability and economy, a eCVT provides that better than any other option. If you want to geek out, check out Webber Automotive videos on a HF35 or Toyota Synergy Drive hybrid system. eCVTs are actually very fascinating.
Thanks for this video, this is exactly what I was looking for. I ordered a hybrid and all of the videos out on RUclips are about the Eco Boost engine! Thanks for testing the hybrid and sharing!
This will be a great work truck used for pool services, pest control, estimators, parts delivery, and more. I've already ordered myself a hybrid so that I can make my new 125 mile per day commute. It is a win-win vehicle in my opinion.
The hybrid is a perfect vehicle for a diy homeowner. Good gas mileage, good price, good weight for the box. Towing is adequate for a small trailer or teardrop camper.
This was a high quality review. I wish all vehicles were reviewed with this kind of thorough attention. Thanks for posting. The truck even seems like a great product and hopefully it'll be reliable and attractive enough over time to revitalize the segment.
I had ordered one, I was number 17 from my local Ford dealership. Still have not received my VIN as of yet. I am a little nervous though, I just hope that this truck dose not have recalls and it last for a good long time with no major issues.
Almost all new vehicles have some issues. BUT. The Maverick is using an existing architecture that is tried and true, the bugs already having been worked out. I suspect there will still be some issues, but minor and easily resolved. I think, and HOPE you are happy when your Maverick is delivered. No, I don't work for Ford. But if they wanna give me a Maverick for the kind words I'll take it.
Yeah I'm really loving this little thing. I want to get a lightly optioned hybrid with a few of the bed goodies and painted body trim. Currently driving a 2004 Ford Escape XLT V6 fwd with painted bumpers (hate the look of so much plastic) and have almost 200k miles with only one breakdown from an alternator failure. It's been on dozens of camping trips and had no problem with light off-roading to the campsites.
@@rantingcullinarian Just change the oil BEFORE the recommended miles. Way before. These high tech engines are sensitive to dirty oil. I'd do 3000 mi changes. Oil is cheap, a sludged up engine is not.
If they ever release the hybrid with AWD it might be a fantastic fishing rig for Alaska. AWD to handle the occasional steep/sandy beach access. Throw on a topper and roof-top-tent with a canopy and you will have enough room for 2 large coolers, plus a dry place to sleep off the ground. This could be an awesome rig for the Kenai dipnet run!
That’s not specific to Alaska! Over here in central, North Carolina the Maverick with AWD sounds like it’s more than enough truck to meet 99.99% of the average Joe’s demand.
This looks really competitive and I see this selling extremely well. Unfortunately, I also see it swiping sales from the Ranger as this is more perfectly sized for people who have been waiting for the return of true 80's and early 90's style compact trucks. The value proposition is extremely strong, and I hope that the quality is also up to par as something has to give when you are competing so competitively on price.
I want 80s and 90s compact trucks back too but in my eyes this thing lacks everything that made them tough and cool. I’m sure it’s a fine vehicle on its own, and I like how affordable it is, and I might even check them out a bit. But I’m just not too fond of the idea of a crossover with a bed. No offense to those who like it, as I stated I’m sure it’s a perfectly good vehicle for what it is.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with competing with yourself - all that matters is the COMBINED market share of your products vs the competition. Ranger sales can fall a little, as long as the combined sales of Rangers & Mavericks are greater than their competitors. No different than Chevy trucks + GMC trucks, GM doesn't care about the sales of Chevy vs GMC, they care about the sales of Chevy+GMC vs Ford & Ram.
Nice truck. Funny now that nobody makes much noise about this not being a real truck since it is a unibody and all. When new gen Ridgeline came out, it was pretty much all people can talk about. Thanks to this and Hyundai Santa Cruz.
Andre pointed out a perfect package. Pretty sure I’ll go for that depending on the price difference between that and the base model. My 7.3 is here to handle all of the trailers anyways but it would be nice to have the extra cooling
Fx4 reminds me in many ways of my Badlands Bronco Sport. It’s like a pick up version of it. If I hadn’t bought the sport I think I would’ve considered this
It’s literally the pickup version of the Bronco Sport Badlands. They share a platform and the only reason it’s not called a Badlands is because this package has been the FX4 package on trucks for years
yes my thoughts too, when it comes to my next vehicle if it's not a Ranger I will be cross-shopping a bronc sport and a maverick, depending on if I need a bed or prefer in interior cargo area...
Excellent comprehensive review of the truck's capabilities. Thank you for taking the time to explain the bed features. Since Ford is marketing this truck towards more newer pickup owners getting out of cars and SUVs, this is an important feature that needs to be shown. This little truck can do a lot. Well done
My Dad and I are thinking of picking up Mavericks. We priced out the XL trim w/ AWD and the estimated monthly payment was like $335 a month. Not too shabby.
I'm not a truck guy. I love ev and hybrid but need to tow my utility trailer. This beats the civic, prius, ridgeline, tacoma, colorado, Corolla at price, economy, and abilities.
I drive a Trailboss. It’s a beast of a truck and I love it and I feel like king of the road when I drive it. I’m thinking about selling it for considerably more than I paid for it and getting one of these. It would serve any need I would have and it’s affordable and I could actually get better fuel economy and probably have it paid off quick. I am not a Ford guy but this vehicle is practical. This is going to be a hit. I’m telling y’all.

Waiting a year is a good idea. There are things that can go wrong with a completely new model vehicle like this. There might be an engine/drive train/ electrical issue that hasn't had enough time to show itself and be fixed in the first year
I'm more excited for the base XL hybrid model than the FX4/XLT model. I think the Maverick will be a great mini truck for commuters that still want the functionality of a truck bed. I think for the limitations of the platform, money spent on the FX4 models might be better spent on a Ranger or F-150.
Maybe. I'm thinking so too. With AWD and some options its 30k. But a 2wd Ranger with similar options is 36k. With 4WD its easily 10k more. I think this will sell well because of the price difference. I'm surprised that the GMC Canyon sells so poorly when it is only about $1000 more than the Colorado. So with this huge difference to other midsize trucks in price for those that need AWD this will sell in a minute.

You're right. The first-gen Escape Hybrid used a hybrid transaxle bought from Aisin (Aisin is a subsidiary of Toyota and made the Prius transaxles too). Then Ford "reverse-engineered"/copied them, and started making their own identical transaxles (maybe for the second-gen Escape Hybrid, but definitely by the time of the Fusion and C-Max Hybrids / Plug-in Hybrids).
'Average car' is including 90k dollar BMW's and Audi's and 100k dollar F450's lol. There's a bunch of cars in the 20k's to mid 30k range. @@dedalliance1 Actually the average new vehicle sale in the US is more like 42K. Any average included both high and low priced vehicles. Nationwide 70% of vehicle sales are trucks and SUV's which raises the average price.

It has a lot going for it. The 2.0 and 2.5 have been good engines. Turbo charged cars wear out faster when smaller than 1.8. P.S.: I cannot be the only one who listened to that Reverse Chime and Thought, "Why does that Chime Sounds like the Truck Returning an Error Message? It sounds like those Error Messages you get on your Operating System or Something".
The FX pkg will be slightly firmer, but not harsh. The whole vehicle was designed to pull in people who never owned a truck before, so it will drive like a modern SUV.
I can't agree on the XL cruise control statements. The cost to add that option is between inconsequential and nominal. It was an intentional product segmentation decision, as Ford understood they would lose a fair number of XLT orders to XL since many people are fine with the "basic package" that is; power windows, locks, a/c, tilt, cruise. Removing cruise control simply moves a lot of buyers to the XLT trim. The most expensive part of enabling cruise on the XL are the physical buttons they have to install, the rest is a software lock.
I never use cruise. I think i used it 3 times in 25 years of driving, and turn it off after a few minutes. Its a pain to keep setting and adjusting speed and turning it off for hills so it doesn't downshift and floor it. I can always drive better than cruise, adjusting for traffic and adding speed before a hill, to avoid accelerating up the hill.

I mean, the Ford Ranger used to be the compact pickup truck, but then it grew out of its own category and started competing with the 150 for some reason. TBH this is more of a return to form.
I think I read somewhere that the volume leader is going to be the XLT, AWD 2.0ecoboost. If they come pump them out of the factories in sufficient quantities, we might see some good deals on that particular configuration. I could see myself leasing one if the price is right.

Only problem I have with it is that it's made in Ford's Mexico factory, which has a history of making poor quality vehicles
I agree - I think it sits in a good spot in Ford's pickup truck lineup with the Ranger the top off-road model for those who want that, F-150 for max towing and hauling capability and the Maverick for more modest capabilities and a modest price.
If you buy the hybrid just make sure you actually going to use the hybrid, because if you do high-speed driving every day the hybrid is useless.
@T-boe the first Why is it not a truck?
This vehicle is perfect for the person who was thinking about getting a Focus, Corolla, Civic, or Elantra, but wants a bit more utility on that budget. Well done Ford.
I think it's targeted at women. My wife does a lot of gardening and likes a pickup but doesn't like full size pickups and we got this for her.
You nailed it, it's a truck for non truck people.

40mpg as a base $20k part time truck is the real strength of the Maverick

It’s going to take sales Fromm lol of the mid-size trucks. It’s looking like the perfect second vehicle.
I want 80s and 90s compact trucks back too but in my eyes this thing lacks everything that made them tough and cool.

I think Ford has a Major Winner here with the Maverick (Even though I still don't like that Cruise Control was omitted from the XL Trim), and I'm certain it will be a BIG Seller, Especially with that 2.5L Hybrid Engine.
Keep up the Great Content Guys! Greetings from Braves Country!
P.S.: I cannot be the only one who listened to that Reverse Chime and Thought, "Why does that Chime Sounds like the Truck Returning an Error Message? It sounds like those Error Messages you get on your Operating System or Something".
The Hybrids are sold out everywhere!
I'm excited for this truck to come out. I really like that the tailgate has different position's. Does the fx4 package ride well on the road?
The FX pkg will be slightly firmer, but not harsh. The whole vehicle was designed to pull in people who never owned a truck before, so it will drive like a modern SUV.
Excellent comparative review Andre. Thanks! Will wait for your in depth test of which ever model you choose. Seems to have a real comfortable ride to.

Wonder if you could add the buttons to the wheel later, and use something like FORScan to activate them.

Great review 👍👍
I just don’t get no cruise option on xl.
HI ANDREY, THANK YOU, VERY, VERY MUCH!!! YOU ARE THE ONLY GUY IN ALL THE RUclips VIDEOS ( and there's gotta be at LEAST a couple of hundred ) on this new MAVERICK to ACTUALLY EXPLAIN WHY THE TORQUE NUMBER ON THE HYBRID MOTOR IS SO LOW!!! IT WAS KINDA SCARING ME AWAY FROM THAT MOTOR!!! A very good, real world type of uses for this truck!! I think that it was BRILLIANT of FORD to put this very sophisticated little engine in as the BASE MODEL!! And although the XL doesn't have all the bells and whistles at that price, it DOES come with power windows , regen brakes, AIR CONDITIONING, 8 INCH DISPLAY SCREEN, ROTARY SHIFT DIAL, AND A SPARE TIRE?? AND FORTY MILES TO THE GALLON IN THE CITY?? HELL!! THIS WOULD PROBABLY HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED A "LOADED" RANGER 10 OR 15 YEARS AGO!!! THANKS AGAIN FOR A VERY THOROUGH, FACT FILLED REPORT!!! CHAS ORVIS, PLAINVILLE, CT.
Great video! This truck is awesome for its purpose and audience.
I honestly like it I think it's a neat little truck
If they can keep the recalls to a minimum, preferably none, this little truck will be all over the roads. Why didn't someone think of this 10 years ago?
I mean, the Ford Ranger used to be the compact pickup truck, but then it grew out of its own category and started competing with the 150 for some reason. TBH this is more of a return to form.
I think I read somewhere that the volume leader is going to be the XLT, AWD 2.0ecoboost. If they come pump them out of the factories in sufficient quantities, we might see some good deals on that particular configuration. I could see myself leasing one if the price is right.
Ther FX4 is a cute little bugger. It'd be great for getting groceries or taking the kids to show choir. I won't be trading the super duty anytime soon though.
I ordered the hybrid for little chores around town. I have my f 350 for everything else
Best review on this truck out there. Great work guys!
Excellent review of the Maverick. Very thorough!
Not a Ford Guy but there spot on with this Maverick reminds me when they brought the first Mustang out took the other guys a few year's to catch up with there version of a pony car.
looking forward to it! Hope you enjoyed driving the truck.
Can't wait till my fully loaded Maverick comes in! Homerun Ford. Awesome truck. God bless America 🇺🇸.
This could be like the Mustang launch. I think the orders are going to be through the roof. My 89 year old father ordered one.
with no reverse gear that may make the cvt simpler and perhaps more reliable i like the sound of it.
I can’t wait until you guys get your hands on the FX4 with falkens and really test how hard it can be pushed off road!
I dont think it will be able to go too hard offroad just because of height, approach and departure angles, and i didnt hear whether its equiped with skid plates or not but i doubt it. Id love to see it going through some mud, sand, light rock, and snow. The tires and awd system will serve it well in those conditions. Will be interesting to see for sure! Cant say enough positive stuff about the wildpeak at's. Ive driven in every condition besides sand and am beyond impressed
There are aftermarket companies out there that are already doing after market suspension kits for them
@@wellthatdidntwork The FX4 package does have skid plates.
@@scottroberts3705 thanks for clearing that up because i def wasnt sure! It will need them for sure. Seems like it will be a good vehicle for 1 or 2 ppl to go do some light offroading on the way to camp outdoors
Yeah I don’t expect too much out of it. But I think it’s awesome how they torture test Subarus on trails they’re not designed for. And hoping they do the same for the mav fx4
