Hi Scott my brother in law brother got a Tesla he had to get the special wiring for it and the power charger it cost him 5000.00 just to charge the dam car his wife drives a Toyota rav 4 oh boy about the gas she buy for 5000.00 crazy
I loved hearing Bill Burr talk about the “guy who talks with his hands and yells about cars, tells people what to avoid” and I knew exactly who it was lol
When i lived in montrose Scotty rebuilt my sisters red 2006 nissan sentra. I say rebuilt i mean this man redid the entire exterior panels, mechanical work well over 5k worth of work and the car lasted FOREVER scotty you’re awesome man!!!
The more I watch Scotty the more I'm convinced that 15 years ago I made the best decision buying a 2008 Toyota Highlander. Still running strong @ 243,000 miles.
@@Pelvicpunch that's great Robert! You obviously maintain it very well. The main problem with most cars, trucks and SUV's is that many people simply don't change the oil and other fluids regularly. I'm sure you have seen videos of neglected engines and transmissions that sound like junk with only 100k miles. Like Scotty says, "oil is cheap, engines are expensive."
The old Chevy trucks were glorious. Uncle had a 1970, 4WD, 350, ran it for 397,000, gave it away, had a snow plow mounted on it in PA during snow season.
My old dad, a master mechanic, said this about cars in the 1990 s. He said if engineers had to fix cars, they would design them very differently..so u could fix things that had to be fixed more often, like water pumps, ac equipment, timing belts, fuel pumps, etc.
I was in the parts business for years and we kept Chevy door handles in all the different interior colors in stock. There was rarely a day go by when we didn't sell one. Only the "highest quality" from GM.
Well its not just gm. I had several ford obs that several times you to pull the handle to get out of the truck and be holding the handle in your hand in the door not open
I had a 2015 Ram that did the same thing after 3 years of use. Had the same stupid key fob and cheap starter on a 5.7 Hemi. Lots and lots of recalls. Stopped taking it to the dealer for the recalls because i was tried of waiting for it.
My 2016 5.0 F-150 has 183,000 miles and still runs like a clock and cold AC. The Ford V8 is worth its weight in gold!😍 AND I should mention it gets 18-23 MPG!
You're a lucky one. My cousin in laws have a 17 with nothing but problems. My uncle had a 14 that stayed in the shop, I know friends that have problems out of theirs, and my cousin is dropping his 19 f250 7.0 from all the problems in it. Yota ✌️
One of the problems with gas mileage if you live in a metro area is we spend a third of our driving time sitting at a red light. The engine is running and not going anywhere. Uses gas while sitting.
07 V8 tundra, 385000 km. Love it. Sure I’ve had to replace some parts. Brake rotors, exhaust, shocks, and I had new leaf springs made for it with an extra leaf for better towing. Overall a great truck. I plan to run it as long as I can.
Imagine having to spend $2000 on replacing an evaporator after 5 years. Mine is 20 years old this year and I could do it in less than an hour for less than $150. If I had to. Which I don't.
actually you can do it with only a partial disassembly on the dash. Remove the top cover which is just held in by 2 7mm bolts and the rest is clips and that will give you access to the mix box top bolts, each are 10mm. Then you disassemble the lower dash kick panel which is just 3 7mm bolts and then undo the clips holding the glove box inside. Fold out the glove box and remove the 7mm bolts holding it in. Next remove the passenger side sill plate cover which is held in by clips and you should have enough room to undo the rest of the bolts and move the mix box out of the way just enough to slip the condenser core out. However, this is actually an uncommon problem. The majority of HVAC leaks on GM trucks are from the massive condenser up front. These are easy to replace and there is a retrofit that gives it more support so it doesn't form stress fractures around the ports for the tubes. Parts are around $150-$200 also there are vents leading to the back passenger compartment in these pickups. They're under the seat. There is an option for rear zone controls as well, same as on the Suburban.
Call me lucky, but the AC on my 2011 Silverado still blows cold enough to make snow. Got 120K miles. I will agree that the latch is garbage. Mine broke out of warranty. When I pointed out that it shouldn't have failed so soon, the service manager called GM and they agreed to pick up half the cost. Not perfect, but better than nothing. If something breaks prematurely on a vehicle out of warranty, it's a good idea to ask if there's a goodwill warranty. Might save you some money.
It’s amazing how many people love the Cummins engines but they complain about Dodge I have had my Dodge for years that outlasted most of the Chevy owners I know that have traded off theirs and still have their trucks at the dealership with problems!
I wouldn't own any truck a Harley Davidson motorcycle won't fit in the bed. If it doesn't have an 8ft bed it's just a poor station wagon. I replaced the air conditioner in my 2005 chevy silverado it only has 71K on it. That's a job to you have to take off the inside fender and wrestle the compressor around the frame. All that work and now it's leaking someplace I can't find but not bad..
The old square body trucks lasted forever the new ones totally suck. I still drive a 74 Chevy stepside short box. 350 motor well maintained 800,000 miles still going strong
How many times has the engine been rebuilt? I'm a die hard Chevy man, but there's no gasoline engine for any manufacturer that is going to have 800,000 miles without being rebuilt! The transmission as well.
My 2002 dodge ram 2500 5.9 cummins is a very strong truck, no issues, original evap, heater core etc. 398,360 24mpg hwy, still runs like new...for those that don't know it, the 3/4 ton Dodges back in the day, the bodies were made of galvanized steel, the whole body/box....it don't get any better than that, my truck has 0 rust 21 years and 5 months on the road..
Happy 2018 Tundra owner. V8, 6A transmission, and bulletproof. I just don't trust turbos - not even from Toyota. I'll pay for more gasoline and keep it forever. 5 1/2 years old and it is flawless. So much power. 12-13mpg city and 17-18 highway. That's fine to me. And my favorite thing is the whole rear window rolls down. In SW Florida I use that every day. Beautiful truck.
Same here I’m a Toyota fanboy but I’m looking at the 24 Tacoma with the 4cyl turbo with extreme skepticism. Turbo ANYTHING does not translate to longevity or reliability after 100k miles. I guess we will see!
Scotty, a few things I noticed when you were diagnosing the Ram. You demonstrated a capacitive discharge when you touched the disconnected positive and negative cables together, if anyone were to try that you MUST make sure that BOTH batteries are disconnected if you have a vehicle with an auxiliary battery for engine stop start! Also, if you’re going to disconnect the battery positive cable but leave the negative connected, make sure to insulate and isolate the positive cable so it can’t touch the positive post.
Scotty is behind the times. a 100 ohm resistor is required to clear a computer to prevent damage... and that is a VERY bad idea on many of the more current vehicles, regardless.
I had a 1993 Chevy Silverado 1500, 6 cylinder. Bought it used in 1995. Drove it until August, 2018. Paid 0nly 4,500.00 for it. Never had any major engine problems with it, just normal repairs throughout the years. Guess I lucked out on that one. Gas mileage was great also. ⛽
One thing ive learned from watching Scotty, the Ram vs Chevy vs Ford debate is liek debating which oil is best. They all have their problems, even the best years for the best models have variations that introduce quircks. Pick one and like it or sell it.
The evaporator in my 2000 Chevy Express still holds freon perfectly after 23 years. So moral to the story: New =junk, high maintenance & very expensive repair.
I got a 2013 1500 WT Silverado and I have 206,000 miles. Everything in my truck is manually operated. Manual door locks. Manual windows. Manually adjusted seats. Naturally aspirated 4.3 liter V6 that has gotten up to 24 mpg. Rear wheel drive with a posi-lock diff. I plowed through 22 inches of "Lake Effect" snow with it. Perfect daily commuter truck. No problems yet.
most likely will need a few fuel pumps and modules, especially if you are in the rust belt, then there is brake lines, my neighbor spent $2200.00 having his brake lines replaced.
Scotty, none of those things are actual pickup trucks. I have a 1993 Chevy 1/2 ton, 2 wheel drive, 2 door standard cab truck with an 8 foot bed. It has a 350 V8 engine and 700R4 automatic. It also has a bench seat that 3 people can fit comfortably. I bought it new. It suits all my needs. I can get 8 foot sheets of plywood or drywall in it, or 8 foot 2x4s, 2 dirt bikes or a quad, with plenty of rooms for fuel cans, ramps, and a bunch of other stuff. It has 321,000 miles. I just replaced both the engine and transmission. It's an AZ truck with zero rust. I'm 64, and see no reason why this truck won't last the rest of my life. The so called "trucks" they make today are not only junk, but they are almost completely worthless as a truck even when they do run.
yep, my step kid mocked me day n night about my old rusted out 95 ram.......I'd just snap back. "its outlived all 5 of your stupid post 2006 cars you bought" gets her twisted every time.
Saw your note. I had 1993 Dodge Dakota V8, 318, club cab, 6.5 foot box. Never a problem. "Sold it" to my friend in 2011. He had till l2021 when moved to other side of country, Sold it for to his neighbour . Three speed automatic with overdrive....still had the original tranny and the air conditioning worked. Simplicity, and as you said, the newer ones are just junk, due to poor engineering and manufacturing
@@MRKNIGHTExactly and Ram has had nearly the same reliability ratings as Tundra for the past five years yet sells more than four times as many trucks. Same goes for the other full size truck makers, they are all about the same reliability but not the same price.
Had a new Silverado back in 96 that had problems from water pump going out at 26,000 miles and full of plastic parts in the cabin. Replaced that with A 99 Dodge and from then on, it's been Dodge/Ram. Never had a problem with transmission or engine. Never looked back. You get more for your money as far as accessories are concerned.
I'm still mad about all those creme puff reviews of the tundra that overlooked all the new reliability issues of a v6 with turbos. Stay safe and smart with Scotty.
What issues? You mean the small batch in 2022 of turbos that were fixed with a software update? People will find a reason to hate on something just because it’s not their preferred make or model. Or it’s different then the last 50 years. Your name is Factchecker, yet you failed to check any facts lol.
My neighbor was die hard Dodge so he owned several Rams over the years. He said that they just kept getting worse and worse. Eventually he had enough and bought an F-150. He said the Ford was better in about every way to the Dodge. Those older D100 trucks with the slant 6 were pretty solid but the new Rams are a symphony of problems. But I wouldn't touch an F-150 hybrid with an 11 foot pole.
Currently rebuilding my 94 K1500 4X sb. Old motor finally went at 563,680 mi. Only problem I've ever had with it is the mapping sensor. Now I always carry a spare, lol. Greatest vehicle I've ever owned, can't imagine ever replacing it
I'm still driving my 1994 dodge ram.. v6. I got it free 4 years ago. . My bud and I replaced everything we could reach. I put almost 30 k on it.. its been a WORKING TRUCK. I'm already collecting my warranty parts. It hauled my boat.. motorcycle. my moving trailer. From Minnesota to Kansas several times. Everything on it still works. Even the license plate light. I'll bet ANY new truck owner that they're WORKING TRUCK.. not show truck... will last 30 years. I'll bet . Probably gonna replace front suspension. It's still cheaper than buying any used vehicle at this point. Let alone a new truck.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂most dodge never have to be repainted or have bodywork done because they don’t run long enough my nephews 94 dodge barely made it to 2000 and my friend at work bought one a year ago most of the time it’s at home because it don’t run😂😂😂😂
Some of his repair and maintenance videos have good advice, but it's clear that he is very opinionated when it comes to car brands, constantly putting down GM products and praising Toyota.
I'll stick with my 2021 Sequoia Platinum with the 5.7 NA V8. I get 10.7 to 11.1 pulling my Airstream and 16 to 17 mpg around town, 18 to 19 mpg highway non towing
Anything electric is more than enough for me to walk away from . I have been driving a basic 1990 ranger since 1998 . I paid $ 3,000 for it . It also had only 21,000 actual miles on it . I now have 184,000 and other than normal wear and tear and maintenance , it has been the most reliable truck I have ever own . I am always asked if I want to sell it .
I completely agree with you any vehicle can be good if you do the all the upkeep you change the oil and do the repairs no brand is really truly bad except for very few things on some vehicles
I've had 3 Chevy Silverado 1500's one 2000, and two 2005s. I've been super happy with mine. My 2000 has 260,000. The other two have 140,000 & 160,000 miles. I wouldn't buy one after 2007, but I highly recommend them.
I have 15 with 118k miles. Outside of oil changes and 4 sets of tires, this old girl still runs like a charm. For years it avg about 14 mpg. Note to anybody with a car or truck with over 100k miles, use a fuel additive and the mpg will improve. I'm treated two tanks of gas, the cheapest one over the counter or Walmart for less then $5. dollars. Now I'm getting 17mpg city and 22-26 hwy. Peace!
Had a 2022 Tundra as a rental for 10 days. Turbo’s were quite and quick acceleration . Two issues : the transmission was a little jerky. One tank of fuel only last 300 miles. My O8 GMC Sierra still has originally AC .Engine and 5.3transmission have never had any issues with 235k miles on 5.3 motor Bought it during bankruptcy. Best truck I ever had.
Had an 08 suburban, ok gas mileage, used oil like crazy. GM said as long as it didn’t loose over 1 quart per 1,000 miles it was within specs. Kept a case of oil in the back and every couple fill-ups added a quart.
I've got the 2015 Silverado LTZ with the 6.2 in it....can't argue too much with what he said here, but overall I've been pretty happy with the truck and haven't had any major problems with it...then again I had only recently started making the kind of money where I could buy higher end vehicles when I bought it so my tastes were pretty tame....up until then I had always driven some pretty crappy vehicles. Anyway, I honestly think vehicles in general have just gotten too complicated and have way too many bells and whistles...in other words too much crap that will eventually break and you will not be able to fix on your own.
I know it’s been a long time since you even remember writing this comment. But I agree with the bells and whistles. But the thing I do like are the lane, and forward looking alerts. I fell asleep while my wife and I were going 85 on a toll road. I was driving, and didn’t feel tired, no nodding off, my wife was half asleep….only the edge of the “braille” woke me in time to prevent us from dying at the bottom of a 60’ or so ditch. I will say though, it will be very, very cold in a place that is very hot, before I let my car drive itself!
@@dawiecful I remember like it was yesterday! Not really, but I do remember making this comment. I agree that not all of the new bells and whistles are necessarily bad (especially in situations like you experienced...glad you came out ok). But I just miss the simplicity of old vehicles. My brother in law just bought an '84 Land Cruiser (needs a LOT of work and assembly) but we were going through it last night and you at least feel like you can get the thing back on the road at some point even if it is in 100 pieces in his garage. These new vehicles you may as well forget even trying simple things unless you have all sorts of specialized tools and gadgets and specific knowledge. I don't know I guess I'm just getting old. I might actually disagree with you on the self driving car thing though...I mean if we're going to have these rolling computers then I'm all for it being able to drive for me on long boring trips up to the cabin and that sort of thing so I can read a book or take a nap. But I do admit it would be hard for me to really trust it...but if you think about it, how much can you really trust the humans out there that are driving? Lots of people on the road that probably shouldn't be, you know?
I'm glad I went with the 2014 Ford F150 with the 5.0L V8 and 4WD. No issues besides normal wear and tear. 68k mileage currently and everything works great.
Exactly! Stick to Fords for reliability and longer life span. I have a 97 F 250...run like rocket. And has an 8' bed. Built to last 215k miles on it, no problems!
Gome on GM. Miss my 95 z71. Think was a tank. Well made and sounded great. They really need to make better simple cars. My dD just got a new chevy and its crazy how many simple things they cut off now that used to be standard.
About the chevy truck: some time ago I contacted GM on several different occasions to bring to their attention that about 95% of the vehicles that I see being driven on the road that have a problem with the ligts not working (headlights or minor lights) appear to be GM vehicles. That did seem to be a complete waste of time. Apparently GM is not interested in making more reliable vehicles!
I had a 2002 Z71 Silverado with 5.3 l and that truck was very dependable I think the only thing I had to replace was the battery in the truck when a long way and hauled good!
Back in 2002, Ford, Dodge and Chevy made great trucks. I ordered my 2002 dodge ram 2500 slt diesel in 2001, took delivery in Feb 2002. It has 398,360 miles. Gets 24mpg hwy, has original evaporater, heater core etc. But I change radiator fluid every 100,000k.
I have the 2004 Sierra 1500 SLE (5.3l RWD), and I'm happy with it. 213K so far. I will replace/repair whatever it needs for as long as the truck lasts. Barring it being smashed by a meteor, it should still be in the driveway when I get a ride in a different vehicle. A one-way ride to the cemetery, that is.
Still got my 02. Bought it in 2011 for $9700 with 56k miles. It's a ext cab Long bed 4X4 Z71. It now has 364k and runs perfect. Best vehicle I've ever owned.
Every GM I ever had have had over 200,000 miles on it, one a 95 Silverado I had over 330,000 on it and it was gas . I have a 2018 Silverado now and love it. Also he is comparing one new truck with 2 used trucks with issues ?
My dad has owned 2 chevy trucks, my mom has owned a chevy impala and all of them have had problems. Idk much about fords but my parents switched over to toyotas and have never had issues since
Interesting that he picked the Tundra as a truck he wouldn’t touch, then has very little to say that’s seriously that’s wrong with it. More positive than his initial impression. I’ve had a ‘23 Platinum for a few months with no complaints so far. I can barely feel the shifts and the engine has an abundance of snort, even pulling a travel trailer. As a retiree who doesn’t put many miles on the mileage is quite low on my list of concerns and his initial concerns about the longevity of the turbos is a non-issue for me personally since I won’t live long enough to put 150,000 miles on it, probably not even 100,000. If I wanted a daily work truck these things might be more important.
I have a 2004 dodge Ram 1500 4x4 5.7 v8 and it now has 240000 miles, it’s been the best truck ever, original everything except radiator and water pump, just gave it to my son for his first truck pray it serves him as good as it served me, oh by the way it’s on the original transmission fluid, lol! I’m not going to change it because Scotty said not to!
@@oreally8605 That may be true, but not in this video. He could be talking about the difference between Granny Smith and Red Delicious apples and someone will start yapping about EVs. Obsession, is the word.
My 2013 1500 Silverado was a money pit and I rarely drove it. Looked great but I got sick of all the plastic bits and electronics breaking with only 65k.
Yea I had a GM Silverado 2014 pice of junk engine I had problems day one brand new I almost cried I have a 2019 Toyota camera no problems. Wounder what new full size truck to buy?
My dad sold his 2013 with 305k miles on it transmission replaced at 200k not many other issues Also I drive a 2014 Silverado with 183k miles only issues have been a/c condenser and a lifter tick
I've GOT A 2013 TITAN SV WITH A 5.6 V-8...LOVE THE GRUNT OF THE MOTOR ....ALMOST REMINDS OF THE '68 CORENET R/T WITH THE 440 MAG. IT HAD IN IT....BACK IN 1975...
@@fidelcatsro6948 You are fortunate if you think $50,000 (actually a little over $60,000) for a vehicle is not a lot of money. You are clearly not a teacher, or police officer, or firefighter in the state I live.
@@don2deliver HIs other vehicle is a 1999 Toyota Corolla with 170,000 miles on it. And it runs good but needs a new charcoal cannister because it smells like fuel most of the time! Actually the Corolla is mine I just thought I'd bring it up!
Scotty was let go by a Chrysler dealership in Ontario decades ago, he still has a h@rd 0n for the company. Not much of a mechanic to have trouble diagnosing a worn out starter 😂
I used leak stop refrigerant in my 2012 Silverado and it worked! I had to charge it 3 times though. It blows cold now, and isn't leaking anymore. Been good for 2 years now.
It’s not just the car companies. Thank the EPA & myriad fed govt regs for the increasing complexity under the hood & plastic to squeeze weight savings wherever they can.
Too bad having a v6 twin turbo tundra is just more moving parts to fail. There engines have been blowing up and they just recalled 100k of them for debris inside the crankcase from factory.
I got a 97 Dodge Ram 5.9 liter 1500, runs like a top with 250,000 miles on it. It also has no tranny slippage. A stock 5.0 Mustang, I can leave about 2 bus lengths behind me with almost a 5,000 lb and with a 5 inch lift kit on it. The truck is damn near Bulletproof. I've thrown everything at it, and the guy I bought it for a brand new used to this an elk truck in Oregon. The trucks after that just turned in a crap.
Scotty, I have a 2014 Silverado 1500. You are spot on, but the list of known issues is much worse. 6L80E transmission will give it up at 100k, because of a junk TC, thermostat that gets it too hot, and poor quality fluid. The engine has AFM issues that causes lifters to fail. The paint is “flashed” to infrared cure that gives it a very poor paint job. The AC has bad condensers AND evaporators. Leaking 3rd brake light. The sliding rear window explodes due to a faulty defroster. All this for trucks that they charge a stupid amount for now!
I have a 14 Sierra, I actually haven’t had any issues with mine, I’m at 400000kms on the stock transmission still, I purchased mine new and it’s been good to me, only things I replaced were condenser and transmission lines aside from basic wear items, if you were to look under the hood you wouldn’t find any oil leaks or anything either, maybe I just got lucky
Great video. I love my 2008 Chey Avalanche 183000 miles and still running strong. I drive to work everyday very conservatively and consistently make between 17.5 and 18.5 mpg. About 550 miles between fill ups. Seeing how newer trucks are made my next vehicle will either be a 2013 Avalanche or 2014 Suburban.
Well I’ve owned a Texas edition 2016 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn for about 3 years now. Bought w 50k miles and now has 72k. No complaints so far. Better in every way than my last 3 Silverado 1500 LTZs. Hopefully my Ram will stay reliable for years to come.
Hey @scottykilmer I just wanted to say thank you so much for all your videos. I found you a week or so ago and have just been marathoning the channel. I'm new to working on cars and your channel is a gold mine of information!
It's the key chip. Get a multimeter and read impedance on the key fob, and make the same impedance from a bag of $2;00 resistors you use to be able from radio shack. There is an orange wire coming down the steering wheel, cut, and put resistor on wire going to wire harness under dash. For less than $10, you could've been driving the same day. Impedance can be . 5 off over or under
My grandson is an auto/truck mechanic. When we were looking for a new vehicle, he advised us to NOT buy a domestic vehicle, period, because as you pointed out, they break and also their warranties are so short, most issues manifest only AFTER it's expired. At least the oriental brands have a much better warranty.
New car warranties? On Toyota, Honda, and Nissan: drive train-5 yrs or 60,000 miles; bumper to bumper- 3 yrs or 36,000 miles. Chevrolet and GMC and Ford: drive train 5 yrs or 60,000 miles; bumper to bumper 3 yrs or 36,000 miles. Looks like they are all the same. Ignorance is bliss!
Scotty, my old 2016 Tundra with the big V8 gets around 14 in town and 19 highway. Mine was $39,000 December 2015, that was bad enough, but now they’re double that price. I just pulled a 26’ body Jayco camper, 10 mpg, oh well. Only disappointing thing so far is my brakes were shot at 50,000 miles, not towing, and I’m gentle on my vehicles. It’s my Armageddon truck, meaning the last one I can buy, they’re crazy with those prices, ugh!
We love my 2020 Silverado 1500. Nothing has broken. And this year, we went on coast to coast trek and back home (8,000 miles) using our Silverado to pull our travel trailer. 😊 It's the perfect trailering truck!
The GMC should have ducts underneath the back of front seats for the HVAC system. Ive seen several manufacturers having issues with the evaps leaking and 20 hrs to fix em. Ugh manufacturers hate us. The hateful thing with that truck is the lifters. Love the videos
All the "creature comforts" in the new vehicles are nothing but problems you'll have to fix if you keep your vehicles for any amount of time. That's why I'm still driving the only vehicle I ever bought new, a 1994 K1500 extended cab 4x4, Z71 with a 350 and 14 bolt rear axle. Sure, living in New England I recently did body work, made a custom bed, installed a 3/4-ton rear spring pack and replaced 40" of rotted frame with a channel I formed from 3/16" plate. I'm just lucky I have the skills and the facilities to work on it and make anything I need. I even reupholstered the seats and replaced the carpet with a fitted vinyl floor mat. The crazy thing is I have a 4" suspension lift, 35" tires, and I'm still on the original ball joints, tie rod ends, CV and U-Joints, wheel bearings with 289,000 miles. The only thing I had to do up until the recent repairs was at 260,000 I had to rebuild the 4L60E after losing 3rd and 4th gears. I'm going to keep buying older and older vehicles. After I'm done with the Chevy I have a decent condition '73 F250 4x4 I'm going through for a 2nd vehicle. The car companies can keep the junk they make today that cost as much as a damn mortgage payment! Keep up the great videos. I really enjoy them!
Chevrolet tech here, on those 2015 that front hvac condenser were common to leak on their lines. If you are facing the truck inside the grill you can see on the right side of the condenser line it was known to have small cracks on the welds of the line. An yes 15 hour job for removing the evaporator but weren't common to have leaks, had replaced more evaporator cores in Cadillacs Ats more than silverado. Is as if GM was doing it on purpose with cadillac so customers will spend a ton of money to get their cars repair.
Still putting along in my '94 Dodge Dakota. I know it's not rated very well, maybe even bottom of the barrel. But this one runs dandy after I replaced every sensor known to man on it. I can do almost all the work it needs, as it's a simple old school truck. It has a distributor cap, try to find that on a new Tundra. With a Flowmaster muffler, the V6 sounds awesome rowing the gears on the 5 speed stick. It's paid for, license plates are cheap and so is insurance. The bolts are all inch sizes!! Best of all it rides like a Buick.
Scotty, I'm so glad I saw this video. I have a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe with about the same mileage as this Silverado with the EXACT same problem. We're $300 and 2 shops in to trying to find where the leak is because leak dye isn't showing up anywhere. I'm going to ask the current shop if they have the meter you used. We're going through about 1 lb of R134A a week. I'm tired of fussing with it!
Everything Scotty says is true. GM doest fix them. They just keep producing them year after year maybe correct the problem in the next generation maybe not.
Our 2014 Ram 1500 hasn't had any major issues up to this point, ganted it only has about 51,000 miles on the odometer. It was my granfather's truck and he passed in 2018. Before that one he had a 98 1500 that was pretty solid up until around 2013 when the right wheel bearing blew. I think the only other issue is had was it needed an O2 sensor and alternator at some point. The 2014 was built in Michigan and so was the 1998 I think, so I guess that's why both held up so well compared to the Mexican built ones.
I own a Mexican built Ram. A 2018 1500 crew cab. It’s been flawless through 70k miles. Fit and finish is very good. No rattles, squeaks or vibrations. It’s a pretty well built truck.
I do love my 2017 Ram 1500 Hemi with its 90k miles on it. 2 years since i bought it and it's still the perfect match for me. I do love my 19mpg average (and i'm not always gentle on it) descent tow capacity and always ready to go. Sure thing, nobody will be able to sell me one of theses crapy small turbo engine in a big rig. V8 power still the best you can get. There's no replacement for displacement. And for Ram product, just give it some love and everything will be perfect
I just received my 2023 Tundra. With a motor not broken in I get 20 MPG on freeway. Seeing 17 MPG on my 12 mile work commute. Way quiter than my 2007 Tundra. This is by far an awesome driving truck. Love it!
I just dont like the idea of a turbo 6. Why not go for the v8 f150 at that point. I get toyota arguably has higher quality control but its not what it used to be and they sell a lot of f150s brother a lot. You got spare parts. A v8.. the v8 is so good on the interstates whe. Yourr passing people
He's 💯 correct about hopkinsville ky. I lived there for 30 years. By the way, it's a bad place to be anymore, which is why the sale went the way it did. The dealers get desperate for a sale in places like that. I remember when all the cats on all the new tundras on the lot were stolen in one night.
Great vid. I was highly pleased not to see an F-150 on here. My 2015 has the v-8 with103,000 miles and ive fixed nothing but new battery and swapped brake fluid. Gets 17mpg commuting with bigger tires. Tows an 8000lb camper pretty well at 11mpg. Still lovingit!
Right on about Chevy tailgate. Replaced mine over 5 times in 11 years and as I watched it getting towed off due to it being totaled I saw it broken again lol🤔
I have this truck. The condenser and the main valve cracked in the AC. $1600. Also the electronic still glitches out a lot randomly. Also have the Chevy shutter.
Thank you, @scottykilmer. I'm currently looking for a truck and I have 10,000 as a down payment for new or for a used truck private sale. These videos and your expertise helped me through a lot of backyard mechanic work now need to buy a truck and I will be using your real experience to aid my American truck buying decision.
GM - but UAW union makes it seem like their work is divine, too. I recently bought a 2022 Tacoma SR 4x4 V6 with about 17K mileage. So far couldn't be happier and hoping to have it many years. I'll take care of it.
Man....I love the way you very simply break it all down. Groovy. I miss people like you telling it like it is. I'm a vet and a realist and I liked this post. Very appealing video. And informative.

They aren’t designed to be fixed. They want you to buy another vehicle
My boss called it eating your own dog sh!t.
Truth. Prospective Engineers should have to work on their field of choice prior to becoming design engineers.

Planned obsolescence is the name of the game.
I was in the parts business for years and we kept Chevy door handles in all the different interior colors in stock. There was rarely a day go by when we didn't sell one. Only the "highest quality" from GM.
Replaced mine 2 times now on my suburban.. and the inside handle I believe 3 times as well...
GM is pure crap...like Ford
Well its not just gm. I had several ford obs that several times you to pull the handle to get out of the truck and be holding the handle in your hand in the door not open
If a cheap, plastic door handle is the only major thing and everything else is okay-ish, I'd be happy. Its the little things. lol

My first car was a 2001 grand prix, transmission kicked the bucket at about 290k, great vehicle.
Toyotas are definitely built to last, but every vehicle will need parts replaced, like brake pads and shocks. You can't get away from that.
I just bought an 07 5.7 SR5 CrewMax with only 65k original miles! Love it
The first generation Tundras can go well over a million miles. Know several people who have that the 4.7, 2002 model pretty much indestructible
Imagine having to spend $2000 on replacing an evaporator after 5 years. Mine is 20 years old this year and I could do it in less than an hour for less than $150. If I had to. Which I don't.
2002 Ford Mustang GT here ... still on the original engine, transmission, AC and alternator.
actually you can do it with only a partial disassembly on the dash.
Parts are around $150-$200
also there are vents leading to the back passenger compartment in these pickups.
That's Nissan quality for you

It’s amazing how many people love the Cummins engines but they complain about Dodge
I have had my Dodge for years that outlasted most of the Chevy owners I know that have traded off theirs and still have their trucks at the dealership with problems!
Me too, 2012 1500. A rad hose clamp rusted out, and one thermostat failure. that's all. I've had it 11 years. I tow a 6500# trailer in the mountains.
I driven older Dakota high mileage and dually 3500 Cummings strong powerful with trailer roof rank no special maintenance seems reliable

All that work and now it's leaking someplace I can't find but not bad..

That's ok in SWFL until you enter North Ft Myers. Them tweekers are relentless......
The crazy amount of money I have saved watching Scottys videos all these years. Thank you sir!
@@shermanbird3248I saw a video where he advised using just that very technique. Interesting eh?
It was an older video clip, regardless I don't think it's ever been the best practice to short out a computer.
My 93 Chevy work truck went 450000 with a 4.3 never failed me and I drove it for my business for 20 years
He's talking about the 3rd gen. First gen are actually pretty reliable, most of the common issues are super easy and cheap to fix

Scotty is the real car-tuber. He ALWAYS speaks da trufe!! Every description of Ram is right on point also 😂

I'm glad I went with the 2014 Ford F150 with the 5.0L V8 and 4WD. No issues besides normal wear and tear. 68k mileage currently and everything works great.
You don't have any miles on it yet. Still too early.
We have a 2009 Chevy Silverado. And it’s been really reliable we like it and it has 123,000 miles.
Exactly! Stick to Fords for reliability and longer life span. I have a 97 F 250...run like rocket. And has an 8' bed. Built to last 215k miles on it, no problems!
A whole 68,000 miles!
My 2019 titan currently has over 70k and engine blew up at 27k

Yep, you can always tell when a Chevy is coming toward you at night.
I agree and I have noticed this for many years...
No lights, it's a chevy. Got to get home before dark or park it when the street lights come on.
@@penguinbrandI can always tell a Ford by its position on the side of the road...
Why bring up Ford, he might drive a Dodge or Toyota , typical cry baby shitvrolet fan.
I had a 2002 Z71 Silverado with 5.3 l and that truck was very dependable I think the only thing I had to replace was the battery in the truck when a long way and hauled good!
Old gm was very reliable . 2003 and back are great vehicles.
My last Silverado made it 288,000 miles and was still strong when I sold it. Only needed a MAF sensor and O2 sensors and window door motors. Not bad 😊
Pre Asian or Asian made?

Scotty usually does not like any vehicle with a turbo, much less 2 turbos.
If Scotty says don't touch it, then I won't touch it. Especially EVs😊

I used leak stop refrigerant in my 2012 Silverado and it worked! I had to charge it 3 times though. It blows cold now, and isn't leaking anymore. Been good for 2 years now.
Lucky it didn’t clog anything glad it worked out
Luck was on your side friend!
I don’t think you’re fooling anyone with that mustang comment lol
Scotty, I have a 2014 Silverado 1500. You are spot on, but the list of known issues is much worse. 6L80E transmission will give it up at 100k, because of a junk TC, thermostat that gets it too hot, and poor quality fluid. The engine has AFM issues that causes lifters to fail. The paint is “flashed” to infrared cure that gives it a very poor paint job. The AC has bad condensers AND evaporators. Leaking 3rd brake light. The sliding rear window explodes due to a faulty defroster. All this for trucks that they charge a stupid amount for now!
theyre literally robbing u and saying hey atleast it looks good and u still have something to drive kinda

All the best Scotty! Have been watching since 2018! You're why I haven't had to spend thousands for labor on multiple cars!
5 off over or under
You Sir are AWESOME!!! Please don't stop! Thank you Scotty!
These types of videos are some of my favorites, Scotty working his magic.
We love my 2020 Silverado 1500. Nothing has broken. And this year, we went on coast to coast trek and back home (8,000 miles) using our Silverado to pull our travel trailer. 😊 It's the perfect trailering truck!
It's still new. Lol. You need more years and more miles till you'll know if it's a good truck.
everything is fine for the first 5 years
The GMC should have ducts underneath the back of front seats for the HVAC system. Ive seen several manufacturers having issues with the evaps leaking and 20 hrs to fix em. Ugh manufacturers hate us. The hateful thing with that truck is the lifters. Love the videos
It does I noticed them recently 😅
As always another great honest down to earth video. This guy could easily empty the politcal swamp.
“To make it another level of crap” -scotty 😂
Still putting along in my '94 Dodge Dakota. I know it's not rated very well, maybe even bottom of the barrel. But this one runs dandy after I replaced every sensor known to man on it. I can do almost all the work it needs, as it's a simple old school truck. It has a distributor cap, try to find that on a new Tundra. With a Flowmaster muffler, the V6 sounds awesome rowing the gears on the 5 speed stick. It's paid for, license plates are cheap and so is insurance. The bolts are all inch sizes!! Best of all it rides like a Buick.
16 Hemi Ram here, love it only thing that's gone bad was a ABS sensor. I can live with that.
My 96 bronco has 333k I drive daily no rust all buttons work 4x4 jams like a monster. Bronco classic.
My 2015 Silverado 5.3L has about 150000 and hasn’t let me down yet 8 years later, I have no regrets
I've had luck shining the uv light into the puddle that came from the drain tube. But if that doesn't show anything you need a sniffer for sure
Scotty dug a couple of those out of the old Houston vault!
You van cut open the air box through the glove box and access the condenser, JB Weld the air box or plastic weld it to reseal it. It works.
Everything Scotty says is true. GM doest fix them. They just keep producing them year after year maybe correct the problem in the next generation maybe not.
The only chevy I would buy is from 2000 to 2005 after that good luck
88-98 bodystyle is a good one too preferably 95-98 with redone dash/interior
