Always good advice. He reminds me of the owner of a local auto repair shop when I was a kid. Many of the local teen boys would hang around the shop and he would talk through every job he did. Telling us not only what he was doing but why he did it. The boys (including me) would clean the shop, fetch tools and other menial tasks just in order to learn from him. He didn't allow any free-loaders, everyone did something. Much of the learning was also by doing. He allowed some of us to do a job that was always checked by him to ensure it was correct. This was well before de-segregation but there were always non-white teens there, also. He treated everyone the same and with respect. He always addressed each of us by our names or "young man". His was just a two-man shop but a majority of the town folks brought their cars to him. His prices were fair and his work trusted. That was something else he taught us. Treat everyone fairly, deal honestly and keep your word were taught by his actions toward us and his customers. About twenty-five years ago he passed away, well into his 80's. At his funeral, I saw many of the boys (now men) that had frequented his shop to learn not only mechanics but what it meant to be a man. I miss him.

0:10 Differences in cleaners do to differences in 2 or 4 stroke engines and more/different addetives in the gasolin (more addetives more corrosion).
2:50 example | Car accelerates slugish dealers cant fix it
3:10 check the power supplie | batterie & alternator
3:41 general overwiev | check airfilter, all hoses and lines conectet properly, any big pudels of fuel and oil
4:00 check spark plugs | soot on it, "normal" color, messure gap (feeler gages)
3:34 plug in scan tool | check failed modules / error code -> dose it makes sense, could it be the problem?
5:25 checking problem-related measured values | to much MAF (Mass-Air-Flow) -> clogged catalyst?
6:05 checking catalytic converter | messuring persure at an oxigen socet, not needed for the test can be unscrewd (PUT BACK IN AFTER TEST!)
7:45 try different scan tool | long term fuel trim runs fuel rich (~5%); MAF looks good, but we aint trust nothin'
9:16 check air fuel sensor | Sensor 2 first bank looks "lazy" and displays values delayed.
9:54 checking fuel system | long term fuil trim is adding fuel, why? -> sensor says it needs more fuel, why? -> engine running slightly lean, why? -> fuel injectors old and dirty?
10:10 clean fuel injectors | long turn fuel trim back down to 0.8% from ~5%

Sorry but he did make 2 assumptions. First, he assumed that the seafoam doesn't work simply because it's an old product and didn't test it. Also, he didn't explain why seafrom doesn't work with 4 strokes and assumed we would know.

@@GE3Music He just said that it doesn't work with gas that contains ethanol and engines with GDI. He didn't test it, as far as we know he's just assuming it doesn't work because it doesn't have the correct additives.
@@GE3Music He explains why? He must have been holding an older can of SeaFoam..... SeaFoam has been reformulated numerous times over the years and is advertised as working with ethanol and non-ethanol blended fuels and has been for several years now. Also, the fuel trims for that Toyota Corolla were just fine. Short Term fuel trims are immediate adaptations whereas Long Term fuel trims are, as implied, long term adaptations. His assumption about the mass airflow sensor reading is wrong as well. Being a 1.8ltr engine has little to do with the mass airflow reading. A reading of 2.34 at idle for a 1.8ltr engine is well within spec and is actually normal. A common cause of poor acceleration on those older Corollas is failing injectors and vacuum leaks, 2 things that mileage has no impact on.

This was one of the best videos I’ve ever seen on this channel! Instead of just jumping out and saying that a fuel additive will ‘most likely’ help this car - Scotty carried us through an entire diagnostic process that was as logical as it was well-edited. Great job!

This man here deserves some sort of award or at least recognition for what he does. He helps people repair their cars and doesn't try to charge you for it. He has helped me work on my cars and avoid going to the mechanic. I'm sure there are many people that have benefited from his videos as well.

@@piedadstoffel5955 44k is great but quite expensive. Try the Lucas Ethanol conditioner with green label instead. 1/4 the cost, exact same cleaning and clog clearing ability. Diagnoses any fuel system fault by immediately increasing performance and lost power. Yet the problem is people think this fixed the problem. No it merely diagnosed the real problem. Ethanol breaks down and contaminates the entire fuel system. The only way to truly restore a faulty engine without codes is to completely manually clean the entire fuel system and replace injectors. Thus why they're so cheap these days. Supply is high because they really aren't suppose to last more than 100k these days. So... There's still a ton of info this guy is not sharing.

As a software developer, I really appreciate the way Scotty chases down mechanical errors like finding bugs in code. This man is not a mechanic, he's an engineer.
Engineers design and implement, mechanics troubleshoot and repair. And you've got it backwards - Software engineers chase down bugs in code like tradesmen chase down problems in mechanical systems.

Problem is some old people who have "been doing it for 50 years" give awful advice and lean on their "experience". Like the guy at AutoZone who got mad at me for telling him I thought it was an incredibly questionable suggestion to run 20w-50 oil in a Honda 4 cylinder. Of course I was right, 20w-50 would be absurd, but he swore he'd been doing it for decades.

This guy reminds me of my dad so much. My dad is a painter that always tells me the construction site was his school and university . Person like this always talk like they fell in love with their craft and work and it’s so refreshing. You don’t meet many people like him or my dad now in days.

In his younger years there were grocery stores. Now there’s grocery chains. Blue collar workers are doomed. But I would kill for a chain of auto repair shops under Scotty’s management. As suggested above in the comments.

@@fakenamefakeaccount7174 I had plenty of great teachers in high school, and I went to a public school in a low-income area. Some teachers just have no love for their job, and see it as nothing more than a way to keep their bills paid.
This was a very informative video. I usually do all of my own mechanic work because I'm surprised at how many mechanics don't follow logical thought progression to eliminate possible problems. Videos like this help me fix my own vehicles! Thank you!

The problem is that cars are getting so high tech that many probably forget to do just the basic things first, they run straight to the computer. When I took small engines class in highschool, the first thing our teacher taught us was "if the engine isn't running, does it have fuel?". Then proceeded down the list of things like air, spark, etc. I know cars aren't "small engines", but a lot of the same rules apply.
Yeah and there are few old school mechanics left who actually repair stuff. Most just unbolt whole assemblies and fit new…if that don’t fix it, do another one…cos afterall it’s only customer money and the more you fit the more money you make right.
@@cujoedaman First thing I check if a car won't start is usually battery, battery connections, and alternator. You don't know how many times I've seen people be: "oh my car won't start!", and the problem be able to be solved by simply cleaning the battery posts and or connections. This is usually the first thing mechanics are taught to check. The second is what you're saying, which is checking there is fuel, and it's getting to the engine, and then spark, air, and so on. These are the basics that I even see so called mechanics forget to check in the proper order far too often. Edit: Notice the first thing Scotty went for was the battery in this video, which is always the right call, even when it's not the problem, at least you have determined that is not the problem.

I use Lucas and it helps the valves and injectors. Improved my gas mileage. My 2.5 Liter MAzda6 is averaging 32mpg in the city.

My one friend bought one with 200k on it, drove it till 285k when it ended up with a bent frame from an accident.
Then my brother in law bought it and ran it in bush car races and barrel races.
When he finally lost 1st and second gear on the 5 speed transmission;
I put the motor in my 03 matrix and still daily drive it.
It's around 314k now and still running strong!
I have an old Buick that uses oil in the gas. It's not a 2-stroke, just needs rings.

I use a fuel system cleaner in my ole 98 on every fill up!! I also ise marvel mystery oil at every oil change! Keep her running smooth! 1998 with 180,000 miles and it runs better than some new vehicles now a days

Seafoam is the best stuff on the market. I work in the auto parts business for 32 years and I recommended it highly.

I appreciate how Scotty clips out the boring part where he turns a wrench for ten minutes before he starts with the pertinent part. That's excellent showmanship, Mr. Kilmer.
Knowledge and the proper scan tool. Scotty, has both but the average DIY doesn't. A high end scan would identify which fuel injector was malfunctioning but diagnosing to get you there takes knowledge.
Lazer temp probes are handy
high end scan tool would not identify a bad injector. injectors are outputs. they are not imputs. all injectors would read would the same MS output. you could do a cylinder power balance test and they would all pass. They may even say rich. which most mechanics would identify as dirty valves and still run injector cleaner through the system which is a missdiagnos which fixes the problem anyways. The truth is a computer cant tell you where it hurts it dosnt even know where it hurts. that car will never throw a code. you could run thousands of dollors in scopes and tools and hours of diagnostics. or you can "kiss" keep it simple and sweet. Which he did and that will fix 99% of the issues in the trade. I do nothing but diagnostics as a mechanic and people over complicate simple systems with complicated tests and ignore basics

It’s called logic! Deduction and knowledge of odb ll pro tool. The one that cost $5k. Not the $120 which those will get you there a lot if the times but deep analysis cars operation. Oxygen,air fuel environmental , spark etc.
I have to say i believe this guy is in the top 5% of auto mechanics. He is very technically capable and very experienced. His level of knowledge isnt taught thats talent and time he has invested. I wish i could get him to work on my 2014 doge ram!

I started using that royal purple cleaner because of you and followed your direction andmy car got an extra mpg rage increase. I've used others and did't have much change. It works is all I'm saying and thank-you for all you do for your fellow man in this inflation era that saves us money!
That part with the boroscope was really helpful for me. I've always wondered whether fuel cleaners are worth it, and that was very convincing.

i tried the sea foam in my truck and my wifes car they both are running much better took both on the inerstate and put my foot on them smoked the interstate up and kept driving in cleared up and drove way better tried another a couple weeks later now engine is purring like a cat i advise you to use the sea foam it works........
Been a loyal viewer for over 10 years now and it's never felt like there has ever been a shortage of helpful content. I have an 05 tacoma partly because of Scotty. Cars and especially motorcycles I've always been a proponent of fuel additives, really solid advice as always, and greatly appreciated.

I bought a 97 Ford Interceptor in 07. It sat a long time before i got it. I drove it a couple hundred miles home. It did lack power and had poor acceleration. I put in a can of Seafoam and drove it around to get it through the fuel system. The next day it started and ran at least 80 percent better. After a couple of days it ran like new. Last year a friend did it with his F150 around 125k miles. His truck ran better and milage improved. These were not carbon problems, but varnish in the injectors.

I used to use Amsoil PI (Performance Improver) on a track car I have. I can say this: When I looked through the spark plug hole, I could see that the piston top was covered with carbon deposits. After running a tank of fuel containing PI, I could look through the plug holes and see that the piston tops were bare, shiny aluminum. So the stuff definitely did something. Whether it made the engine run better or not, I cannot say.
I wish Scotty explained where all that material goes after it comes off? Does it come out of the exhaust?

I use Automotive Wolf car care software to track and monitor the maintenance and fuel economy all my vehicles. I used this Max-Clean on my 2010 Toyota Corolla at 250,000 miles because the gas mileage dropped from 34 to 27 mpg. Now 3 tanks of gas later my mpg is around 32 so it does seem to have worked. I will try it again soon.

Good video, Scotty. My 06 Accord was having problems stuttering on take off and dirty fuel injectors turned out to be the culprit. I started using 93 octane at the pump and every other fill up using a fuel additive. This was 6 or 7 years ago and I haven't had an issue since then.
That Royal Purple stuff dropped my fuel consumption by about 0,5 L/100km. I used it after you recommended it in the older video. I was really impressed!
