One of my brothers worked for Farmer's Oil in Beatrice, NE as a chemical engineer formulating gasoline and other fuels. He had to sign a non-disclosure agreement to work there.
Trump makes everyone who works for him sign an NDA. From management to dishwasher. He also made all Whitehouse employees and aids to cabinet positions and even military personnel assigned to the Whitehouse sign an NDA . Highly illegal. Just like Trump their paychecks are signed by the US taxpayers.
if your vehicle will run on 87 without detonating, or pre-igniting, use it, if your car does pre-ignite, or detonate, use premium. Forget about that mid grade, you do not know what percentage of premium is blended with regular to get that mix.. You do not get more power with premium fuel. All premium does is prevent you from losing power. If you have a vehicle that is prone to detonation or preignition. That’s all premium does, is keep you from losing power.
Higher octane resists detonation. If it ignites too fast your engine loses power and makes a horrible pinging sound. If it burns slower you end up poluting more with unburned carbon. I use high octane because the manufacturer requires it, it has a turbo engine
I have a truck with a turbo on the engine. The manufacturer says it’s ok to burn 87 octane gas but I use premium(91 octane). I’ve had several vehicles with turbos in the past 40 years and they all run better with the higher octane fuel.
Ethanol also degrades and damages aluminum... That's why you cannot use street gasoline in piston engined aircraft. The wing tanks in most small aircraft are actually part of the wing structure to save weight. Have ethanol in there and your wings get weaker as time goes by and then some day you fall outta the sky because your wings failed.
@@stevenweiss2148 That I do not know... But the FAA got directly involved when Oregon mandated that ALL liquid fueled vehicles must run on methanol blended fuels, including aircraft. Oregon refused to sell 100LL and sport gasoline (used in boat engines) FAA told them that's fine...no aircraft allowed to land in your state including commercial. To be honest the Alphabet Soup groups have too much power, but in the FAA cases I'm glad they do.
So our parent's accidentally gave us Led poisoning by smelling the gas on every fill up in the 70s & 80s .. Here comes another class action lawsuit 😂🎉 Love the advice!
Once in a while, I use Amsoil PI (performance improver) in my tank. I always see my gas mileage go up when I use it, and Amsoil through testing, makes sure that it cleans up your system (pistons, valves), etc.. After all, I am a lifetime dealer, since 1980. I don't push it, I just use it for myself. I love their products!
@@opera93 Plenty of testing done on PI, and proven to cleanup valves, pistons, etc.. before and after photos. Amsoil has a good reputation. They aren't going to fudge the results.
It's ALL about the Additives. You can be SURE that if buy cheap gas, it for certain will have virtually no Cleaning additives. Locally, the Tech's at Motorcycle shops recommend Shell V Power.
I go out of my way to drive to a Shell station for this gas. Ironically about 4 years ago I experienced my first case of bad gas at another shell station but it was caught relatively quickly because so many people complained . No problems ever since and I swear I get better gas mileage using Vpower 🤙🏼
All gas sold in the US has to meet the min. government requirement , it all has detergents in it. Better gas just has a better additive package. Ran no name gas and branded gas, , 1 MPG difference and ran great.
My ‘11 Vic has that option but I only used it at the height of gas prices during Obama administration- and just once. The mileage is less (the mpg) so it defeats the purpose. If anything, I wonder if it’s not bad for the engine- even if it’s manufactured to handle it, . I just assume not use it.
@@AndrewVOdom I do know you really wanna have the most of one fuel or the other because when it changes the tune it expects it to be one of the other. Definitely not wise switching fuels when you've still got 1/4-1/3 a tank left.
I got lucky both the little stations by my house in the boonies has non ethanol 90 octance gas. It would be 12 miles for me to the next closest one and these are less than a mile away.
Get a clear 5 gallon jar with a bottom spout. Put 4 gallons of gas in with 1/2 gallon water. Stir and let settle like Scotty did. The ethanol WILL mix with the water and settle to the bottom. Drain or siphon off the water/ethanol mix, leaving just ethanol free gas. This will also work with "old" gas as gas never gets old, just tha additives do. Save your money
About lead, people knew back then, that's why the gasoline conferences were made, the inventor was huffing gasoline in public to prove lead is safe, he got wildly sick.
In both N. J. and PA the state used to come out completely unannounced 3 - 5 times a month and measure a gallon and test for water, octane and various impurities !!
Used to be 50c cheaper in Joisey vs. NY ,and they pump it for you! so I'd always stop for fuel at the I-84 ny exit for Port Jervis and fill up there ,but nowadays they're about the same, maybe 20-30c difference.
@@thotenvin6595use whatever your cars drivers manual tells you to use. 88 is fine for most cars. Here they have 87, 89 or 92. I use 87 since that's what Nissan says to use. Never had a problem just using what the manufacturer says to use. I run the old school unleaded in my bikes though.
Back before self-service you had to watch out for gas jockies 'hanging the pump'. This would happen when the customer before you only wanted a dollar or two of gas. The attendant would not reset the pump to zero, and hang the pump so that when he put it in your car, it would start at $1 or $2. If you weren't observant or did not know how much gas you tank held, you would pay the extra money which the attendant would pocket.
@@michaelkatz7862 rumann above is correct if he did not reset the pump for next vehicle. He would collect again on the first cars purchase without dispensing that additional amount of gas. If he pocketed the difference the $ and the gallons would agree at closing.
Lead additive was eliminated from gasoline because it instantly destroys catalytic converters if used (and catalytic converters became standard equipment on all US vehicles by law starting in model year 1975).
They ran both for a long time at the pumps. Trucks that were one-ton rated could still enjoy leaded fuel up into the 1980s. I had one. RVs with big engines also got a pass into the 1980s as well. It was well known from the start that you couldn't run leaded gas in a car/truck with a cat. If you did, you were just stupid.
MMT additive first started with leaded gas (and has continued). For all its effects it does not automatically ruin a catalytic converter (like TEL lead additive did).
Hey Scotty, last week I went to a station a mile from my house, that I never use. It's in a bad neighborhood. Anyway, they had an auto-shutoff scam going on. If I hadn''t caught it, they would have stung me for about 1% of what I paid for. So I did not get cheated.
@@greentriumph1643 after they put it in and had to raise prices, then they raised prices to not put it in…also if you think lead fumes are safe I don’t know what to tell you.
You can thank the wackos in california for that one Demon, they're California mission standards that are required all around the United State of caliporn.Yeah, they really don't know much there.Except for how to mess things up
You can tune almost anything to run E85, but you need to change all the rubber parts in the fuel system. Fuel pumps also need to not have copper commutators. It's mostly too much expense unless you're racing.
How many people are buying the E85 ethanol gasoline in some attempt to save money? They soon find out most vehicles are not made to operate on mostly ethanol. I bet these are people trying to save lots of money by filling their cars with E85. Scotty, thank you for all you do for us home maintenance folks. Without your help many of us would be victims of crooked, greedy, or incompetent car repair people. The best is: advising us to buy a very good OBD 2 code and operating reader for our vehicles.
Ethanol is corrosive stuff. Have seen carb damage in lawn and garden equipment from when people dont empty the gas out or use some stabil or similar when storing them for the winter.
The E85 crap has a range of 51% to 85% ethanol and can vary a lot by station and region. The 10% ethanol can also vary a lot - I've had 15-30% before. You can make your own tester if you don't want to buy one. Just search how to make one.
I put either 87 octane regular gas or 88 octane E15 gas (usually can only find it at one of the 2 Sheetz in my town) in my 2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Laramie 4x4 (V-8 Hemi). I have 60k miles on the odo; no problems…I get 18-19 mpg avg; 16-18 city driving and 19-21 highway.
I bought a new chevrolet in 1975. That was the first car that was labeled unleaded fuel only... I'm not sure when they stopped selling it completely.....You could still buy leaded fuel for years as racing fuel and you may still get leaded gas at airports designed for piston engine powered airplanes
@@michaellankford8358 Correct. 1975 was the first model year that cars in the U.S. were required to use unleaded fuel. The law/regulation to phase out lead in vehicles (on highway) was passed before that. So, way before 1990.
@@Thagomizer-U235 i was still buying it for my old harley in 95. after that i had to buy small containers of lead additive. EDIT: might have varied by state. michigan here.
Nah, after 14 years of use it becomes greener even if it's powered by electricity from fossil fuel sources (and sooner if the energy is from other sources).
I've run 88 for several yrs if i can find it,as it is usually cheaper & has not caused me any problems across various models & yrs..including a 1999 jeep..altho they recommend only using 88 in 2001 & newer
My car is peachy keen happy with 10% Ethanol gas, but I ve messed up some small engines with it and now go buy the no ethanol gas for my lawn equipment.
It is true that base gasses are virtually the same but whatever additives they are putting in V Power gas gives me considerably more power and gas mileage. It is the only gas I'll put in my bike. Runs much better for sure...
My 91Ford F150 300 runs off anything ive put everything from E85, diesel fuel, oil, 2 stroke oil, marvin mystery oil, even trans fluid in my tank. Not more than a couple quarts up to a couple gallons at a time and it burns it all.
All I put in my 2016 Audi A3 is Sheetz unleaded 88 E15 it's always 10-20 cents cheaper than 87 and I always get an additional 8 cents off with the combination of my loyalty card and some rewards points. I haven't had any problems with it for my car. Owners manual says it okay too.
Ethanol ruined gas quality is so suspect now, I only put Exxon Premium or Shell Nitro in any 2003 Honda Accord four cylinder. Over 2000.000 miles on it, it runs quiet, powerful and economical. I'll pay more for a gas that does not gum up my motor. I wish the government would stop putting corn liquor in the gas.
You realize that fuel is still a 10% ethanol file. A fact of life is that ethanol is cleaner and keeps injector / carb parts cleaner. However, if you leave ethanol fuels sitting a longer time, the corrosive ethanol evaporates, corrodes some internal aluminum and cheap brass parts, but leaves a varnish as the gasoline evaporates. Ethanol by is self has more octane, so it’s actually an octane booster. Top-Tier fuel like Costco sells is a premium fuel and contains Techron. The big problem with ethanol is when it sits unused in a motor / fuel tank ethanol ( all alcohols ) are hydrophilic and bind with moisture in the air. In a closed fuel system this really isn’t a problem.
There’s a station a mile from my house that advertises ethanol free gas. It’s more expensive but that’s probably better, especially if you have a car that sits during the Winter.
When I worked in a gas station the when the price changed we had to manually change each pump. The pumps meter had sort of a transmission, you manually changed the gear ratio to the display that showed how much gas you were getting.
The only thing you can do is run non ethanol old school unleaded though it costs more. You can also get gas from a reputable station in your town. I guess you're gonna have to get one of those testers.
If you own a car made after 1996 that 17% ethanol is not going to do anything negative. It's only when you get above 30% is when it causes issues. Stop listening to Scotty he doesn't know everything like he thinks he does.
Autos produced after 2001 can run on up to E-15. I have tested it in 3 autos and have had zero issues. Pay a lot less too. It's not available in all areas through.
I had a Town and Country that could run on E-85 gas. I ONLY used it one or two times,, AND LOST 4-5 miles PER gallon, for the rest of the time I owned it!!! Recently I filled up at Sam's and LOST about 4 miles per gallon. Switched back to another station and my mpg went back to Normal.
Yup, the tech additive packages, or lack thereof (you know that discount gas station, it often lacks additives), are the only difference between stations.
Thorntons started selling E15 (Unleaded 88) along side E85 and regular gas. I trust Scotty when he says any ethanol is bad for your non flex fuel car. I on occasion will put E15 in my car when gas prices are high and I just can't afford regular gas but no way am I gonna use E15 long term because I do not want to damage my car.
On my 2022 Volvo XC90 that i have purchased in 2021 I went to BP where I was use too go to with my prior car I put 87 or 86 I don't remember which one and I was hearing an tapping noise, I said to myself I really hope this isn't normal, then when I read up on the type of gas for my car, I needed an top tier gasoline from mobile or Exxon which are the same, and the noise had stop, BP don't sale the higher grade that is needed, because I was ready to return the car back to Volvo.
Man, my Toyota Sienna used to run great. One day to save a little on gas, I decided to buy regular gas instead of premium. Shortly thereafter my check engine light went on with codes po 420 and 430. I had no idea regular gas would do so much damage.
That's great. My Toyota is a 2006. Even so it had about 115,000 miles when I bought it. I always used premium like I said. I can't believe yours responded differently. Good for you.
Some interesting tidbits about MTBE, the company I work for back during that craze install some sampling systems for it in the refineries locally here in Corpus Christi Texas. The problem we were having was the MTBE was eating the O-rings up literally dissolving them into nothing. We ended up with something called Kalrez O-rings, they’re the size of the end of your pencil eraser and they were over $100 apiece they were the only ones that would put up with it that stuff is highly corrosive.
Great video- I’m headed to get myself a test kit for my small engines, watch out that poison ivy growing behind you, some people call it Virginia creeper 👀
How you said ...." The difference ...is what they adding in gas .... This is the biggest problem I can tell when I make a long trip of 750 miles and put gas from different gas stations , what are closest to highways , .... there are huge difference ..... On same octane gas With all respect for TRUTH and KNOWLEDGE
Thank you for the reminder I'm going back to cash until everything goes back to plastic Besides places are charging percentages for using the damn things
@@belindaspechtenhauser6621 when it happens they will be controlling when where if how much what u eet and bunging tax on top for Cchange...everyone should only use cassshhhh where possible
@@dazzlewoodonly tar sand oil is from living things, deep crude is produced from the heat of the core. You only find deep crude near fault lines. Tar sand oil is only found where bodies of water were. There is hydrocarbons in space…
I only use non-ethanol fuel in all our vehicles and any gas equipment we have! We have many local Stewarts shops (a reputable sandwich shop) that offer non-ethanol high octane gas. And since both of my Saab's are turbocharged I give the knock sensors the day off, LOL! Never have a problem with their gas!
Living in Canton, Ohio, I expiranced a Shell station rasing their prices the day prior to the Timken Steel and Bearing plants from getting their pay checks. On top of that we had a refinery here local called Ashland Oil back then (now a Marathon) refinery that supplied all the local stations within 60 miles of their fuel other than the BP stations.
I will say this however. The 88 that Sheetz sells makes all of my vehicles run smoother and I get better gas mileage than most station's 87 gas. I do not recommend other gas station's 88 however because the opposite is true elsewhere. I have gotten worse gas mileage and performance at other stations.
MTBE also did some interesting things to the vehicle. SAAB had to replace fuel pumps on many of their vehicles because the higher levels of MTBE in fuels sold in some parts of the country dissolved the adhesive in the fuel filters, causing particles of the adhesive to clog and damage the pumps. There was no recall though. It was fixed on a "courtesy" basis.
How about paying and selecting for high grade like 94….. and it shares the same nozzle. You are paying high price for how much in the line until you get the grade that you selected!
Never thought of that. I think when I get premium for my Mustang I'll take a gas can and put about 1/2 gallon in it to clear the nozzle and line and I'll have 1/2 gallon for for lawn mower
@@jasonmorecroft7764 Right - I bet almost NO-ONE thinks of that. I am in my 70's and never thought of that until today when I read your post. I wonder how much is left in the nozzle and hose ?
My credit card company said to either use tap and go or use the chip. NEVER use the magnetic strip reader. With the chip a new transaction number or code is produced with every transaction
There's only 139 refineries in the whole country, and only 7 in California. I asked the delivery driver at the local independent and the gas came from Sunoco.
They used to call ethanol additives summer blends because the colder temperature ethanol burns with less energy. My mileage goes down in the winter. They didn't put ethanol in the gas in the colder months back in th good old days
Pay attention to Scotty and my son Ryan’s performance shop, yes this fuel E88-E85 really will destroy your engines life. I should of listened to my son Ryan
Went on a road trip from California to New Mexico and I was thrown off when I was filling up in the gas stations there. My cars recommended to use 87 and New Mexico have 85. I had to opt for their higher grade, which was 93 or 95 I think. I figured it was just the lower elevation. But, I didn't risk going lower that recommended.
Not only is Scotty the most knowledgeable car, gas, and oil man that I have even heard of, he seems to have a ton of energy and of course charisma! If you can’t just love this guy then you’re spending too much time on your bicycle instead of driving your wonderful automobile! 😂
Pump jumping happened to me in Florida. My card wasn't stolen. However as I put the nozzle in my tank and started pressing the handle to pump gas I noticed the money counter moving yet you could hear no gas going in and fuel counter hadn't moved ! It stole 10 cents off the top before I got gas flow! I was pissed so I turned that station into the Florida atty generals office as a complaint. The AG did look into it as I got notifed by them. Not sure of results but I never use that station!!
buy gas at one station cheapest gas MPG dives down to 12 to 15mpg, buy gas at ameripride station get around 30mpg, lawnmower doesn't want to run on the gas from the cheap station. with that ethanol gas test kit use distilled water, some of the chemicals in city water can really throw the test results off. City where I'm at the city water eats aluminum and discolors brass.
the new lead additive, which was intended to be used in gasoline, was already considered toxic and harmful to health even before it was added to the fuel,
I though ethanol lowers the octane rating, thats why most of the 93 octane i have tested has no ethanol, The refinery would have to but so much octane boosters in, that is would cost more than the 10 percent e -10 would save.
I'm in Canada and the gas is really bad here. I use Ethanol shield in the gas for my small engines . It is easy to remove it yourself with some jugs and water but I'm too lazy .

if your vehicle will run on 87 without detonating, or pre-igniting, use it, if your car does pre-ignite, or detonate, use premium. Forget about that mid grade, you do not know what percentage of premium is blended with regular to get that mix..
You do not get more power with premium fuel. All premium does is prevent you from losing power. If you have a vehicle that is prone to detonation or preignition. That’s all premium does, is keep you from losing power.
If you are using reg gas and losing power then switching to premium simple math says you are gaining power _ Right ??
Higher octane resists detonation. If it ignites too fast your engine loses power and makes a horrible pinging sound. If it burns slower you end up poluting more with unburned carbon. I use high octane because the manufacturer requires it, it has a turbo engine
I have a truck with a turbo on the engine. The manufacturer says it’s ok to burn 87 octane gas but I use premium(91 octane). I’ve had several vehicles with turbos in the past 40 years and they all run better with the higher octane fuel.
No, it’s the difference of 10% ethanol, or no ethanol at all. Ethanol destroys your engine.
@@Maynardd But it's not like you can buy gas with no ethanol. At least not in Ca.

I only use ethanol free in my car. Luckily there are a couple stations like 5 miles from me.
Unfortunately for Canadians it’s not sold here anymore. Would definitely use it in my classic.

Back before self-service you had to watch out for gas jockies 'hanging the pump'. This would happen when the customer before you only wanted a dollar or two of gas. Lead additive was eliminated from gasoline because it instantly destroys catalytic converters if used (and catalytic converters became standard equipment on all US vehicles by law starting in model year 1975).
Another action by our evil government.
If you did, you were just stupid.
also 'Racing Gas' at pumps (in the '80s) sometimes contained lead
Yeah and they went from lead to mmt which is just as bad lol.
MMT additive first started with leaded gas (and has continued). For all its effects it does not automatically ruin a catalytic converter (like TEL lead additive did).

Top Tier is a protocol that requires testing of the fuel additives to determine whether they will cause an engine to fail over a long period of time.
The best fuel so far is shell, always had better gas mileage when I filled from shell and no issues
Still has ethanol lol
