Does Seafoam Actually Work in a Car? (with Proof)

- In this video I test Seafoam in a Honda Civic Si. I use a mini borescope camera to look into the engine and see how dirty the engine is before the fuel treatment and then after the fuel treatment.
I followed the instructions on the container and seafoam did a great job cleaning a good amount of carbon off the piston head. I am impressed by the results and finally we have proof that seafoam actually works!

Sometime, somewhere in the world, a bird flying by has shit directly into an engine with the spark plugs removed.
What? Why? Haha.
Ha ha ha ha laughing my bollocks off
the worst coincidence imaginable
Which is why you need seafoam or a new bird flu
Somewhere in the world someone has to do such comment haha
Just did the seafoam "3 way treatment" (in the gas, in the crankcase, and sprayed into the intake) to both my son's 2010 Equinox and to my 2010 Expedition. The difference was astounding - I was very impressed with the Seafoam and will use it again.
putting Seafoam in the crankcase can lead to costly repairs, usually whatever it loosen has a habit of clogging oil passages, especially the ones that feed your main bearings.
you can search it on the internet.
the other 2 methods seem okay I suppose
@@terran2kk I think people should do this when they doing an oil change since that stuff still stays in oil.
@@GokuTheHusky it just goes through the injectors, not the oil. I usaually do this when I put a new filter and after a tune up. (2002 Ford Expedition, “285000” miles) and still running like a charm.
Question buddy did you remove spark plugs when you sprayed into the car? Or do you just spray those above areas w/o doing anything else?
@@whoelsebutthekidace No, this was just a treatment for the gas, the air and the oil. I think I did the plugs and coils afterwards.

I love chris fix, he is the only man on the internet i will swear by.
@Lu Ms it breaks it down and carries it through the exaust, if it does get stuck in the exhaust it doesnt matter since it wouldnt effect performance at all
@Lu Ms most exhaust systems are pretty thick in diameter, so theres alot of space for air to travel through it regardless of carbon build up, carbon build up hurts the engine performance usually when its inside of the cylinder because it messes with the firing of the actual engine, it can get in the fuel injectors and even on the tips of the spark plugs. This is a very condensed space, and seafoam should get the carbon build up out of the cylinder through the headers and through the exhaust, sometimes it can get stuck somewhere in the process however, but generally it doesnt, and if it does, it will just move onto the long exhaust pipe in which it wouldnt end up losing as much performance as if it was actually hurting firing time or the other engine components, so to answer your question, yes, it can, but its not supposed to. To answer your second question, if you have more than one exhaust tip and its thicker than the bananna can fill, then yes it would decrease performance, but in most higher performance exhaust systems, it wouldnt effect performance much, and this example doesnt work here because carbon is incredibly small, it would not build up to the size of a bannana.
This worked in my car with 100,000 miles on it, totally noticable throttle response, starts up great now on cold mornings, I drove aggressively at the end I caught like three feet of air over the train tracks and ran two red lights, now it runs great!

I just used it on my '85 Toyota. It seemed to work pretty well overall, and noticed the change almost immediately after starting to spray it in front of the TB. BUT, after I was done and took the the intake apart to remove the Seafoam line, a bunch of the seafoam dumped all over the ground. A bunch of it clearly didn't go into the engine.

shit. think about how i felt doing this! my car has a resonator delete with an aftermarket intake and a straight pipe to a side exhaust i custom made. that bitch can be heard inside my house when IDLING! and i live in a neighborhood of primarily elderly people who like to sit on their porch. i didnt get very good looks from them XD
+Daniel Diaz I Dont know what the heck you just said
Why, it was simple english. You just that stupid?
Used this on my just purchased, 20 year old prelude (150K mi). Before using it, I had no oil leaks. I used it and it cleaned out a whoooole bunch of nastiness, but it cleaned it out so much, that several gaskets started to leak oil (I assume the built up oil was plugging the holes). It runs much better, now that I replaced a whole bunch of rubber in the engine. I'm glad I was able to find all the leaks and fix them, but be warned that if you're doing this on an older car, there's potential for new leaks. But the car definitely appreciated the cleaning and all new gaskets!
Bought this for my Camaro, followed the instructions to the T regarding the aggressive driving. Long story short I ran a few red light, pulled a mustang and hit a crowd, wanted in 3 states now but 10/10 would buy again.

Great video! If you ever get the chance, definitely try this out on engines notorious for carbon buildup. Like Audi’s 5.2 V10 on the C6 S6 or D3 S8, which are much more prone than an R8 because those cars are more likely to be driven leisurely.

It's amazing to see your style vastly changed within 5 months. Your Gumout video doesn't feel like a modern ChrisFix video, but this video does. Your Techron video is somewhere in between!
After watching all your videos on this subject it would appear that surviving combustion is the most important aspect of any of these cleaners for piston tops. For example seafoam is mostly pale oil that was used as an upper cylinder lube years ago. It allows the naptha, which is the primary detergent to survive long enough to clean the piston tops. So for your test it's the most likely to show visible results. Agree?
Chris thank you for providing your channel you are fully detailed and very honest on your opinions that makes made me more interested in subscribing to your channel you rock bro I wish you was in Miami
Awesome! I wish I was in Miami too lol. Too cold here
I've used seafoam after my civic was idling rough that had 200,000 miles on it...after using it like you did it was running like a new car...safe to say seafoam def works!
Hey Chris, love your videos. Super informative, some of these things I already know how to do but watching your videos are still entertaining.
However, after seeing this video, i was kind of curious to what you would do for a Catalyst system code. Have you used any of the cat cleaners? i've also seen videos using lacquer thinner to help clear the cat. Would love to see a video on cleaning the cat, and the potential effectiveness of products.
Thanks!
Same problem here
The carbon buildup on pistons usually isn't a issue for most car engines that have carbon buildup, it's the intake valve (inside intake and not combustion chamber side) and the piston rings that can not be fully seen unless removed. Also the throttle body and idle control valve are key area that are suspect to rough idle and even throttle response that can be easily cleaned by most.
Seafoam makes intake valves pristine in lawnmowers, at least.
Good video! I think this makes more sense in case of direct injection cars which tend to build up carbon on the intake valves and manifold. Anyway, results are good.
I have been a Seafoam fan since my mechanic recommended it a few years ago.
Doing my car live right now, thanks for the good how to explanations!
Chris! Pleasee do a review for ATS Chemical’s 505 CRF and CRO! Stuff seems legit but I love you how you show real live proof and wanna see just how good those products are
keep in mind, the engine was already pretty clean. I bet on a dirty engine the results would be more impressive. and you didnt look at the valves either.
It does work better in a dirtier engine. Letting the fluid soak in the chambers then removing it before starting is what works best.
Yea these kind of cleaners are meant for much older cars with years and years of carbon buildup
BlatentlyFakeName buy some BG44K is a top rated additive
Top rated by who, the manufacturers?
Marvin Harrison Smith II I don't use BG but know people that recommend it. What I do is this check out on Google.com in the search bar put in LS1 been testing oil. It's about using Marine two cycle outboard TCW3 rated oil at 1 oz per 5 gallons that's 640/1 ratio of gas to oil every time you get gas. My Volvo and Jeep run great. Marine TCW3 oil burns ashless. Lots of testing done. I've been using for over one year

I have always loved to apply Seafoam to my cars. I've owned 65 cars since I was 14 and I'm 38 now, so I've had some fairly crappy cars with alot of miles. I just love pulling the brake booster hose on my cars and slowly pouring Seafoam into the hose while running and watching my car smoke out the entire neighborhood. SO much fun!
24 years ,65 cars. Sounds like you are buying junk and make a lot on scrap metal. All your cars need a tag that says , scrap metal.

True, a friend of mine had an old Opel Kadett that ran lumpy as hell so we took it out on an empty parking lot and revved the shit out if and after a short while a huge black cloud came out of the exhaust and it was as smooth as a shaved kitten.

I’ve used sea foam on all my cars and I’ve had some cars for almost 8 years. That ran as well as it was new even after 100k plus miles. I’m not saying that sea foam kept my car on the road but it definitely did not hurt it as far as I can tell.
Your car sounds so satisfying!
SeaFoam is LEGIT!.. and a bad ass video of the demonstration!.. LIKED AND SUBSCRIBED!!
For being such an old video, it still holds up!
you should check for carbon in the intake manifold, throttle body and all those parts of the intake to the inlet valve. specially in diesel engines can build up there a whole lot of deposits which restricts air flow and also harms the turbo to spool up. i remove them as much as possible by hand, then i use a spray cleaner like you did and after this i burn free the DPF using OBD diagnostic tool. This will give the best results and noticeable more power (TDI engines). those deposits on top of the piston are not verry responsible for the engine.
Hey Chris you're suppose to let it hot soak for at least 20-30 minutes before aggressive driving might get better results, when I did mine after 45 minutes of 70 mph driving I had lunch and jumped on the highway again and lo and behold I stopped traffic accelerating onto the highway with all the smoke I left behind that's almost 2 hours after I did the spraying.
I love the rev on that engine, I drove a Saturn ion redline now that thing was nuts fast had a super charger
So basically from watching all the videos...this was the best

a v10 doesnt have 20 pistons, it has got 10 pistons in V pattern, 5 vertical on left and 5 vertical on right
Damn, of all those I wanted to get your thoughts on Marvel Mystery Oil
Hi Chris, this is what I do every 10K miles. I mix up a fuel system cleaner which is a gallon and a half of fluid. One quart of Acetone, M E K, Lacquer thinner, Zylol, 100 percent Isopropyl alcohol, and two cans of Berryman gas treatment.
I mix this in a empty 2 gallon gas tank. I run my gas tank low and fill the tank with straight gasoline and the mix I described. In just one gas tank the engine gets cleaned well including the fuel system. Works for me fella. Give it a try, works really well. A old timer mechanic showed this to me years ago.
Peace vf
I think you’re supposed to do multiple treatments of the intake spray (three times will be the best balance between cleanliness and cost)
It would be interesting to test the cylinder compression PSI for each cylinder before and after the seafoam.
This is interesting.
I bought a 72 MGBGT about 13 years ago and the #4 cylinders compression was low I put some Seafoam in it and it brought it up to the other cylinders
The back side of the valves is what I would be interested in , the minor amount that’s cleared off the Pistons is mostly irrelevant on a street car
Im a little confused. On a port injection vehicle, wouldnt just throwing it in the gas tank do the same thing? Itll be mixed with the fuel and clean the injector subsquentially cleaning the intake valve right and end up in the combustion chamber anyway? SO why go through the intake ? Cylinder heads?
Your video was much easier to follow than the instructional video from Seafoam. Go figure lol. Good job. Might want to mention that the person spraying the Seafoam in should probably wear some sort of respirator. It starts smoking before the can is finished. Also good for finding exhaust leaks around the engine lol.
The Accord has 250,000 miles and runs great. It runs even better after flushing the fluids and doing this and the Seafoam fuel cleaner. The joy of buying used cars lol. I don’t think the dude changed the oil filter in quite a while.

Have you had any luck with sticky piston rings when adding it to the oil crankcase? Have you ever left it in for 3000k miles? Or just Vv 100-300 reason I ask is I just did a fresh oil change on my car.
@@truthseeker1203 seafoam deep creep might help a sticky ring, soak it for a while and it might pop free. I always used ATF before I found seafoam. The engine treatment can stay in if you want too. I put it in my skyline every oil change.
@@bikerboymc54 how would I go about using the deep creep? I was under the impression that’s for tight bolts. Do I need to pull any fuses? Change oil afterwards?

It’d be cool to see a vid of seafoam cleaning the crank case 👍🏽
I am more concerned with the intake valves and guides on a GDI then the combustion chamber. Would be interested in seeing the diff with the intake valves after seafoam.
Intake valves on a direct injection engine won't get cleaned by spraying seafoam through the intake, you have to go in and clean it by hand.
Exactly!
good stuff, Mr. Fix
Helps a lot with the carbon that builds upo in the valves and the sump pressure relief return hose that sometimes carries some oil. Beware with the acceleration body gate, the servo is fragile.
