Scotty Toyota had the same problem with when they first started GDI engine. And the build-up is on the valves not Pistons. You have to pull the intake off to check the valves!!
I had my dealership clean the valves cleaned with walnut shells. My car is a 2010 VW CC with 103K miles. absolutely insane how many things i learned from scotty! i never was into cars untill i saw him, for real! Thank you Scotty if you're seeing this :D :) :)
I remember as a kid,dad and mom blowing out our Oldsmobile 98,after driving all winter, those engines used leaded gasoline, they would carbon up so bad,it was almost unreal Scotty!!. Dad would wait for a real clear day with no snow on the roads,on the weekend of coarse, and open up the double-pumper 4-bbl.carb.,that car looked like a semi-truck with all the black smoke pouring out of the dual-exhaust system, after about 2-3 miles, the black smoke was completely gone, that V-8 had tons of power and better fuel mileage too.(fuel mileage wasn't an issue in 1955)
Yep, mom would send me out with her car and pray, wind it up in low gear, back it down, repeat until clear exhaust.... my car never had any carbon problem...
Italian tune-up really helped my F-150. It doesn't get driven very hard. I drove it at 80 miles an hour in second gear for 1 minute. It's now idling smooth as can be. Thanks Scotty. I had tried all sorts of different additives without success.
Walnut blasting works just fine and easy to do. Make sure valves are closed and a vaccum running at the same time you are cleaning the valves and it comes out looking new.
My grandpa always said “ blow the soot out of it” lol. It was funny to watch that old man hammer down on his truck every now and then after driving 25mph all the time
People make comments about Scotty using his hands to talk-like many good mechanics they're visual learners so as he's talking he's picturing the process. I do it.
Scotty, my friend is a mechanic. One day we used a BG induction system cleaner on my car. He hooked up a special sprayer in my intake boot and an air compressor. I only drive about 2 miles to work and it helped smooth out my idle a lot!
yeah Scotty dead wrong on this video you SHOULD! carbon clean your vehicle especially if its GDI , It makes a huge difference on most cars. I'd do it every 30 k on GDI. Every tune up we do gets one! Customers notice a difference every time we do one. Plus you can't use water on cars with O2 sensors cause it will probably ruin them. The BG line of products and ATS line of products are the two best for sure.
Some weeks ago a paramedic explained to me all kinds of common heart problems like ventricular fibrillation or heart attacks. I couldn't help but immediately draw comparisons to misfiring engines and piston seizures, the parallels are astounding. Doctors are really just smarter mechanics.
Scotty, I don't think you really described the inspection accurately for direct injection engines. Pulling the plug and looking through a borescope will not show you the carbon on the intake side of the valves/head, rather it shows your combustion chamber and your piston. You would have to scope through the intake manifold or remove it to see the carbon on the intake valve side. Did I miss something?
Thank you for pointing that out. You can use the scope by removing the intake temp sensor and scoping through the port (depending on its location. This goes through the intake manifold and allows you to view the valves.
Exactly, bro... Just sent him to Scotty ..he will explain everything to him.... that's why the police cars never needs to be cleaned up , because they speed fast all the time... that's not fair🤔🤔
Steven Andresson yeah it’s true it’s not fair lol cops speed all the time chasing the criminals and the getting rid of all the carbon just send them scotty when you get caught and he will explain everything :D the cops can’t do anything because when they watch Scottie’s videos they will also realise that they need to subscribe to his RUclips channel :D once they watch a few of his videos they will better understand why criminals speed and it’s not to get away from cops it’s to get rid of the carbon build up in their engine, because there’s no other way to do it but you have to be careful because once the police put the sirens on you will have to escape them :D
This is helpful in case I ever get a piston engine again, but rotary engines are a _whole different beast_ when it comes to carbon buildup; a redline a day keeps the carbon away!
@@joshrandall3632 Haha guilty, definitely more than once a day, it's just to much fun not to! Check my channel is you've never seen a supercharged RX8 :)
To check for carbon buildup on a GDI, you should pull the throttle body and check the intake valves and ports. The heat of combustion will help keep the pistons clean. Due to the airflow through the ports, there will be much more carbon there. I've seen some truly horrendous carbon deposits on valve stems and ports. The plugs and piston crowns looked fine. GDI engines suck, unless you have secondary injectors in the ports. Good for him mentioning that.
I did valve cleaning in my honda accord 2016 in 107k after loosing too much power witch has an GDI system .. removing the head and the valves was like a coal !!
@@Blaze49AzSd You can do it yourself with Seafoam spray or B-12 chemtool spray. All you have to do is take your intake apart and spray directly into the throttle body while someone revs the engine slightly so it doesn't stall. Do that several times, let it heat soak, then drive the piss out of it on the highway. Your engine will run way better after.
@@vicbrown2508 It should as long as you spray well past the maf. I have a 2.4 ecotec i've been doing this for a couple years and the valves are nearly spotless. Do this every other oil change and you'll be golden.
@@SkylineBNR34 I beg to differ. Too much risk when it's cold. It'll blow out your rear main seal if it freezes. It's only really worth doing you have a performance vehicle that has high internal turbulence due to forced induction.
Yes - Top quality gasoline and top quality oil (the recommended viscosity) can make a huge difference in performance and longevity. I speak from many miles of personal experience.
The "Beauty Cover" on most Hyundai and Kia vehicles includes a foam pad to lessen the noise from the cam driven GDI pump. Its neccessary. Without it that pump is much louder.
Yes indeed. I have a Genesis r spec and my wife has a kia optima. I used to think it was a knock in both of them, but my mechanic friend said it was just the pump . Something about the fuel pressure in these direct injected cars and that pump. I felt relieved, at least it isn't a knocking rod. lol
SCOTTY THANK FOR NOT BEATING AROUND THE BUSH!!! AND GETTING TO THE POINT" AHHHHHH YOU ARE CORRECT ABOUT CARBON CLEANERS NOTHING BUT CRICKETS AND SNAKE OIL"
It is true that intake valves build up carbon fastest, especially since they not only take in the sludge from the PCV, but also can suck oil into the manifold through the valve shaft gaskets. But: a lot of sludge will also make it into the combustion chamber and will be deposited on the pistons. I have hardly seen any GDI engine that had clogged intake valves and no deposits on the piston. If you see these, odds are that your valves look even worse. Plus, it is really easy to get into the combustion chamber as opposed to unmount the entire intake manifold. Some shops also use better borescopes that have adjustable viewing angles so you can actually get a glimpse of the intake valves.
@@svenschwingel8632 I know this is a year late, but you obviously have never seen an N54. Carbon on those valves can get so bad it’ll cause misfires, happens on average about every 50k miles.
They serve no purpose. Every car I work on I take that junk off and put it in the boot. Nobody has ever complained. Then again, few look under the bonnet anymore. They are too stupid to know what is under the bonnet.
@@CodyDoesIt - If you're using fully synthetic and changing your oil every 2k then you're throwing your money away because that oil is still good most likely unless you drive very infrequently and that oil is a year old.
I bought a 1986 Nissan Maxima from a couple so old, they bought their sandals with Jesus. The car coughed like it had asthma when I took it above 65MPH. Got a carbon cleaning and 2 years later, she still purrs like a kitten. The age of car and previous speed driven made the decision easy. Well done, Scotty.
I love your videos and advise but I don't agree with letting the outside of the engine get dirty. My step father taught me how to fix cars as soon as I could reach into the engine bay, every inch of his engine bay was clean enough to eat off. He said dirt and dust around the belts and everything else was bad, and with a clean engine you can spot a leak easier. 35 years later I still clean my engine bay every 2nd to 3rd car wash, though it's not as easy anymore with everything jammed in so tight now days. It also means you inspect everything else as well and stay on top of any potential problems.
I ruined a 01 vw tdi transmission washing the engine bay a few times. The water dribbled down shift tower into case and destroyed just rebuilt transmission so in reality i ruined two in a row before we found out what was going on. Now i am cautious on my rx hybrid cleaning engine bay but the vw bay cleaning is a no no and it rusts less with a layer of oily dirt on it. Haaaa

Hey Scotty, I watched your throttle and IAC cleaning video this week. So I decided to clean my throttle on my 1999 Solara V6. I sprayed the crap out of the throttle and the IAC and got it clean as a bone. Turn the engine over, and it stopped turning. I Hydro locked the engine with cleaning solvent. I pulled the front three spark plugs, and sucked out about 80 mL of fluid with a syringe and tube. I was then able to get the engine to crank. I threw the spark plugs back in and now it runs fine. I have a 2016 Audi SQ5. It has a 3.0 supercharged engine and direct injection, it absolutely needs carbon cleaning. Just had it accomplished, along with new spark plugs and engine air filter.... brand new car.
Sold my old focus with a 1st gen ecoboost with 200k km from 2011. Never needed carbon cleaning. Changed the oil every year or 10k km. During the Weekends I used to redline my car and have some fun. Car was functioning like a clock when I sold it. It was a 1.0 ecoboost 3 cylinders. Now I own a fiesta st 1.5 200hp 3 in line. Same gdi system. Ever since I bought my old ecoboost everyone told I bought a time bomb.... Some of them used to own German brands diesel crap machine. And a few of them had major problems and spend hundred of thousands of euros and they always said nothing beats a German motor bla bla bla....
My favorite excuse is when their fans say "Well you don't just afford one, you have to afford to own one". Nope, actually it's just a lazy unreliable design, because they know their clientele them will just keep throwing money in the pit. Pretty smart on the manufacturer's part TBH but funny to see people defending them.
Thanks for your information . I was thinking of taking my 2016 Mahindra KUV100 CRDI , Diesel powered car for carbon cleaning . I Drop that plan now !!! But recent days in my country (India) many small mechanics have starting making a business of doing carbon cleaning by promising lot of things. anyways.. u r doing good job for the Global people thru your Videos. kudos.
I sometimes load up these videos and double tap the screen rapidly about 20-30 times in a row for the 2 second skips. This guy just spewing out the info with his arms waving around is hilarious!
What I am seeing with a lot of this new automotive technology, is that it is great for about the length of time of the warranty period. If you plan to keep the car much longer, the thing will become a money pit. In my experience, these newer cars are not holding up as well as ones from the late 90's to about 2008. Where I see Honda Civics and Accords from the 90's to about 2004 running happily along with 200K miles or more on them, I know people with the newer Honda and Toyota cars that are having major engine and transmission issues with as little as 30K miles. And the electronics seem to now have continuous issues. This has just been my personal observations in Florida.
FarmerMiyagi I also find it ridiculous that todays trucks are so big, heavy, and uneconomical. Detroit is stuck in the past. Their car development cannot keep up with the efficiencies and reliability of foreign made cars. Atomization inside cylinder is poorer I think than port injected.
My understanding of the water/methanol injection used in WW2 fighters was that it came from a separate tank and was injected in the intake manifold to cool the intake charge as well as the piston crowns and combustion chambers which prevented detonation when the pilot selected overboost aka war emergency power. It's basically the same system GM used on the 1962 Oldsmobile Jetfire turbo.
I have always been very picky about my engines. And, I clean the crap out of them inside and out. I have a BMW 525i so, It has A LOT of plastic in the engine compartment. I clean the engine compartment so well, you can eat off the engine. And, I treat the plastic with Armor All and let it sit for several hours after before I start it back up. With 191K miles, we're still going strong.
I just ran a hose from my washer fluid tank and used a iv needle to restrict the flow and plugged the other end on a vacuum test port on the throttle....it worked as far as I could tell would go though a few liters a day of regular driving.
The Italian tune up is a great way to get your car running fine again. My mate used to make a killing doing this, old granny's and granddad would bring a car an say its running bad, well he knew that the thing had been out of second gear or past 2k rpm since new. He would take it home the long way round and thrash the thing up to the limiter, holding it high in the revs for a whole 5 miles straight an she be trailing smoke for 3.5 of um, cough and away it went. No work, free ride home, 40 quid pocket money.
Well done engineers, you improved emissions and power! If you have a GDI VW engine you can solve the carbon problem with 20$ catch can. Newer GDI cars have double the injectors, direct one's and regular ones in intake manifold. So in the end GDI is the way to go
I had an 07 mazdaspeed3 with the 2.3 direct inject turbocharged engine. Around 80k miles I ran seafoam through it. I did it through the vacuum lines and that car ran like a champ.
Yeah...nobody at Sandia National Laboratories, The Air Force Weapons Laboratory, and at least five other places with hundreds of propeller heads could possibly come up with anything as sophisticated as a carbon cleaner - never mind an atomic bomb...
My dad's P-47D Mexico's Escuadron 201, Aztec Eagles.. we fought bthe Germans too, supply fuel to USA, and plenty foot soldiers, kept the fields producing etc. I guess Trump don't read history
My brothers 2007 Chrysler 300 never went over 40 miles an hour for a few years and it failed emissions inspection, i took his car on the highway and brought it up very high and it stunk and then smoothed out and then it passed inspection the following day.
Thank you for the informative presentation by an experience mechanic. 4:15 An old time mechanic told me that one way to get rid of carbon was to drive all out up a several miles long straight uphill highway grade. That the speed and extra load of the hard working engine would blow out carbon.
Just asking, but isn’t it the top of the valve that carbon builds up on the direct injection engines not the bottom. Weren’t you looking at the bottom of the valve inside the combustion chamber.?
Scotty, you actually have to borescope through the intake manifold to see the back of the intake valves where the carbon causes most of the trouble. If you got lucky and the intake valves were maximally open, only then would you see this through the spark plug holes. Right?
My '69 Ford 302 V-8 van had a periodic problem with carbon buildup on the valves. I removed the intake manifold and manually cleaned carbon a couple times in the '70s. It ran better afterwards, but it still could not get more than 14 mpg.
I just pointed out where Scotty says it is acceptable to carbon clean your car. And in another video, Scotty says he does not advise carbon cleaning your car. So while I respect & like Scotty. Scotty is only human and Scotty goofs up sometimes!
It's like the car wax that last's a year out in the elements or makes it go faster; or it's like paying extra for nitrogen filled tires, although compressed air is 90% nitrogen anyway!
Air must be magical considering it's also 21% oxygen. Are you saying that if a lot of something (N in air) is good, more of it can't be better? Or are you saying that if a small amount of something (non-N gasses) is acceptable, eliminating them can't be better?

Italian tune-up really helped my F-150. It doesn't get driven very hard. I drove it at 80 miles an hour in second gear for 1 minute. It's now idling smooth as can be. Thanks Scotty. I had tried all sorts of different additives without success.

Like Scotty said, use high quality gas. Specifically, only put "Top Tier" fuel in your car.

Walnut blasting works just fine and easy to do. Make sure valves are closed and a vaccum running at the same time you are cleaning the valves and it comes out looking new.

Scotty, my friend is a mechanic. One day we used a BG induction system cleaner on my car.
He hooked up a special sprayer in my intake boot and an air compressor.

yeah Scotty dead wrong on this video you SHOULD! carbon clean your vehicle especially if its GDI , It makes a huge difference on most cars. I'd do it every 30 k on GDI. Every tune up we do gets one! Customers notice a difference every time we do one. Plus you can't use water on cars with O2 sensors cause it will probably ruin them. The BG line of products and ATS line of products are the two best for sure.
I agree. First time I disagree with Scotty. You should routinely use the BG intake cleaner on your GDI.
I love how scotty is always swinging his arms around
We used the 3C machine at our shop from ATS on a ton of VW and BMW's. It works fantastic! Way better then pulling the intake manifold.
how much is a cleaning with that on average?

Hi kyle, do you suggest carbon cleaning by h20 technology or not?
Carbon in engines have a striking similarity to high blood pressure

How much to pull the heads and have a mechanic do the cleaning? Thanks Scotty
@@joshn938 are you saying this works for direct injection engines like the 4.2 audi v8 ?
@@vicbrown2508 It should as long as you spray well past the maf. I have a 2.4 ecotec i've been doing this for a couple years and the valves are nearly spotless. Do this every other oil change and you'll be golden.

installing additional oil catcher also helps prevent carbon buildups
Yes but it isnt necessary. When living in colder climates they tend to freeze due to water mixed in which can blow the rear main seal.

@@SkylineBNR34 I beg to differ. Too much risk when it's cold. It'll blow out your rear main seal if it freezes. It's only really worth doing you have a performance vehicle that has high internal turbulence due to forced induction.

AND GETTING TO THE POINT"
AHHHHHH YOU ARE CORRECT ABOUT CARBON CLEANERS NOTHING BUT CRICKETS AND SNAKE OIL"
Nice borescope view but it really doesn't show the real GDI problems which is carbon build up on the intake valves.
You sound paranoid.
What about skyactiv Mazda?

What I am seeing with a lot of this new automotive technology, is that it is great
for about the length of time of the warranty period. If you plan to keep the car much
longer, the thing will become a money pit. In my experience, these
newer cars are not holding up as well as ones from the late 90's to about 2008.
Where I see Honda Civics and Accords from the 90's to about 2004 running
happily along with 200K miles or more on them, I know people with the newer
Honda and Toyota cars that are having major engine and transmission
issues with as little as 30K miles. And the electronics seem to now have
continuous issues.
BTW the castrol GTX ultra clean shown in the video is a semi-synthetic oil not fully synthetic!, but it actually cleans carbons depotsits...
Changing synthetic oil at 3,000 miles is a total waste of money. Totally.

GDI ... introducing diesel engine problems to the gasoline engine. Well done eco-nuts. Well done.
