Cat-Lick-Converter. Cats don't mess with air tools, compressors and carbon their electricians. Just drag a piece of wire around and they will have it striped in no time.
Scotty explain me this. I have a 98 Corolla, 1.6 4A-FE. Leaks oil into cylinder 2. In the emission test it gets perfect readings for everything at first and the next second the hydro carbons jump up 4x the allowed limit. Soon after they go down. And back up again and then down again. New plugs, new-ish wires. Lambda is fine always. Its a hot engine. Does that...
Yes, and right to learn it wont through a PO430. The trick is to have a car old enough that ig doesn't check the cat efficiency, then your cat will never be bellow efficency threshold. Good

Scotty, you remember the catalytic converter refill kits GM used to sell. Basically you knocked a metal plug out of the converter. You shook all of the stuff that was in there out. Then you replaced the screen and refilled the converter with the GM supplied material and replaced the metal plug and then re installed the converter and out the door. I worked for a GM garage in the late 70's and early 80's. Not sure if they made new converters back then but that is how that garage fixed the problem. I never saw that in any other garage.
I remember it, because I did it. Hardest part was getting the old "beads" out. That air operated tool to get them out was a joke; had to shake some of them out. You know, grunt, shake, grunt shake.
I did the lacquer thinner and the codes cleared up. Only run top tier citco gas and never have had any more cat problems. My 2002 4runner has over 300000 miles and it is awesome. Thanks Scotty you rule.
I remember back in the 70's when they started using cat converters, the first thing you did when you got a car with them was to take it to a muffler shop and get them taken out. The cars ran so much better without them. Of course that was in the years between when the gov required emissions equipment on new cars and before they started yearly emissions testing in some states.
Overfilling your gas tank can cause all sorts of problems and codes. I had a code for the cat converter for the longest time and when I stopped Overfilling my tank the codes went away eventually.
Never had an issue other than it fucked up my fuel gauge. The gauge still works but the empty is on the 1/2 tanks it’s like it just shifted. Fuel light and everything works
WOAH! I did not know that silicone ruined cats and O2 sensors. Thank you for enlightening me. I pledge to never get a can of silicone anything anywhere near an intake, cross my heart and swear to God. Thanks, Scotty.
I would like to see Scotty do his own budget minded builds. Off road rig, hot rod, finding, buying and fixing a vehicle for daily driving, fun weekend toy, etc. Would be interesting to see his thought process and how he works.
If you only have one o2 sensor before the cat, and its emissions are done using the obd2 port. You can break the material in the cat, put it back on and still pass emissions. You can also do this on most cars(obd1) with smog pumps because they almost always only need the air pump. If anyone asks I didnt tell you this and I've never done this lol
I always remove the first cat from my turbo cars and fit a straight through pipe which gives around an extra 15 bph. The first cat is not required for mot test in the UK. A re-map may be required to get rid of the engine management light though
Remember my great uncle showing me how to fix my cat on my old 80s model. Step 1; remove the cat. Step 2; jam a crow bar through the cat. Step 3; shack out all the debris. Step 4; reinstall the cat. Old truck ran like new again.
Catalytic Converters don't make the car run bad, unless it's clogged. Also, keep in mind, if your vehicle is 1996+, it will turn on the check engine light, due to downstream o2 sensors required in OBD 2 systems. BTW, I actually pounded out the guts on a clogged up converter, (it went back in the car, as a hollow body) just to get a beater car going again so I could give it to a relative who was in need of cheap transportation.
I've been behind many an old stinker of a car and I totally agree on that. I can't imagine how bad rush hour must have smelled before they added them, doubly so for your health.
this man induces me to choose to smile a lot as I watch his videos. He is a healer. I do feel sorry for people who live in places where vehicles have to pass tests. Why dont they just still a bloody big cat on the last pipe at the oil refinery?
Diesel or gasoline is not the same thing as exaust fumes. Some of the nocive gases are a byproduct if useful substances burning after they have done their job.
I remember visiting the motherland for the 1st time Manila, Philippines. One thing I remember was that a lot of 2nd hand commercial vehicles from mainland asia congested the streets. Many of these vehicles had the catalytic converters chopped off!! The smog was horrendous and I always had a metallic taste in my mouth
My son was 90+ miles from home when the cat. clogged up. All the way home he could only drive 30-35 mph. Normally he drives WAY too fast, this was the first time he saw EVERYTHING along the highway! If it ever happens again, I'll give the ideas you gave and hopefully it will save him some money. Thanks Scotty!
Robert Garcia ,I’m not a mechanic.dont get what you’re saying.been working on 1996 4 runner .im starting to wonder if I’m going restarted! Are you saying lacquer thinner is lacquer thinner no matter where you get it? If it’s clogged can’t you just break that honeycomb stuff up and put it back on for a straight flow?
How often would you recommend cleaning the catalytic converter with the lacquer thinner? Additionally, how much should it be driven until the next gas tank fillup? Got a 1996 camry with about 250,000 miles.
@@wbwills2 Yup that's exactly what Scotty means. It's a joke. Laquer thinner is the same, no matter where you get it and is not special to any one field. You can find it anywhere including your local hardware store. As for you answer on breaking up the honeycomb inside your cat. conv., Yes you can and you will have better flow since there will be no restriction, but you will set a Check Engine Light on because the o2 sensor will pick it up immediately, not to mention your vehicle would run less efficiently resulting in less mpg. Not to mention failed smog issues.
4:07 The AC Tech in me cannot look past the condensing unit and how much vegetation is surrounding it. Trim those plants Scotty if you want your AC to work efficiently. Ok, i'll stop, lol
@@eligavia Weeds grow up around the A/C and choke it out. Be careful weedeating around the power lines. It's better to spray that area or clear it by hand. The customer will get very mad if they don't have A/C.
I tried the lacquer thinner then wound up with an EVAP leak. Be careful with what model you have, where the fuel pump is, etc. I later discovered the port for one of my O2 sensors had broken off. So, also, try to diagnose before just throwing things around.
I knew a guy who stole cat converters out of mall parking lots with a cordless saws all. Imagine the surprise of the driver when they came out and fired the car up, Haha. Thankfully, he served time for that and other issues...
Your obviously never driven a nice car that needs the signal from the O2 sensor to run well, without a cat you could make your car run rich/lean etc, you should make sure your vehicle doesnt need it before you remove it.

I always see people commenting on scottie arm movements while he talks but it actually makes a lot of sense based off of his career path. Normally people who use arm signals are tactile learners meaning they learn by doing things so when they try to communicate with people they use the hand signals because it's how they're brains wired so automatically if something easier for you as a person you assume it's easier for everybody subconsciously. Actually also makes sense as to why he's so successful. If you end up in a career you're mentally/physically tuned and gear to do you're going to excel in it.
Get this... While living in California back in the 80's, I had a 6 cyl Ford Granada. At over 150K miles, it would eventually never go over 35 MPH. My 'mechanic' friend removed the honeycomb from inside the cat converter. It ran great and never failed a SMOG inspection.

A comedian once referred to it as a Cataclysmic Perverter...and since then, this has always been that. Thanks for the detailed info on the Cataclysmic Perverter!
Lol the new STIs now only have one catalytic converter as well from factory, the design of putting a cat before the turbo was a bad design which has been eliminated
@@evilal20 lol what kind of vehicle is it on? Think those sound good put on some flowmaster super 44 mufflers or if u want more of a note throw on some flowmaster super 10's
I probably shouldn’t admit this when I worked as a lube tech in a shop that would do major jobs on cars we had a few customers that had cars that flat out wouldn’t run due to the cat. A few just flat out didn’t have the money to replace the cat so we took a drill bit to the front side and sent them on their way
Thanks Man, I had an air leaks at the throttle body baffle, a bad coil and a fouled sparkplug that caused problems and got me a p0420, p0507, p0068 and p0496 error. Replaced the clamp, replaced a faulty coil and new spark plugs and wire all around. All the codes went away but the 0420. All the O2 sensors tested fine. I trued catclean or something like that and tried to seafoam it to no joy. I used a IR temp sensor on the cats and the driver side was close to 150 degree higher than the passenger side. I figured nothing to lose now so did the lacquer thinner in the tank and after an hour of driving the check engine and code p420 is no longer active. And the truck is driving a lot better. Thanks you saved me close to $900 for a new ypipe with cats!
bought a VW Passat Variant last year, build in 98. The Catalytic converter was still good but the rest of the assembly was rusted! The main reason i had to buy a new one was a broken flex piece (these mesh tubes to negate rattling). The Outer wall of the flex piece was ripped apart so my car was loud af
well the vacuum leak thing isnt likely because the ecu compares the front o2 sensor to the rear o2 sensor. if the front 02 sensor is lean then the rear o2 sensor will also be lean and the ecu will normally know this and throw a different code. there are exceptions though, but for the most part the bad cat code is just that. But what caused the cat to go bad in the first place. If its plugged then you need to find out why or your new one will fail too.
LOL I still have a couple of those "TEST PIPES" they used to sell when they started using converters.Of course that didn't last long when they noticed we didn't swap them back I might even have my old "Bypassing emission controls" book sold by JC Whitney !😀😀
I've done the soapy water method with a little twist. I sprayed it good with oven cleaner, let it set for 15 minutes, placed it in the soapy water. 24hrs later returned to the bucket and it was black with crud at the bottom..and the Cat looked brand new! Rinsed it good, Put it on my car, code went away, and it sounds better..
That sounds awesome,,, im In Canada and avoid inspections for years,,,i know my car is great,, stickers don't make anything run, il spend that money on gas,,if a catilic converter fails from rust ,,i can assure you there will be strait pipe welded on instead,,
In the UK, we have garages which specialise in tyres, brakes and exhausts, one of their favourite tricks is to jam a long object down into the catalytic converter to break it, and then tell you it needs a new one, "because it's got a rattle".
This man IS FULL OF KNOWLEDGE. I WOYLD LOJE TO HAVE A FULL TIME, JOB WELL PAYING JOB TO TURN I TO A CARRER AND WORK AND LEARN FROM YOU SCOTTY. WE NEED GOOD PEOPLE IN MY AREA!

He is talking about serious stuff and this cat walks into the shot and licks his own crotch lol lol. Puts a damper on any car company that scotty doesn't like ALL OF THEM LOL
Very nice video Most important thing i learned is that silicone fumes or burnt engine oil can definitely clogg or damage the catalytic convertor, very good to know. Thank you scotty.
You could just replace it with a normal straight pipe. A catalytic converter over here in New Zealand cost about over $200 second hand. So could make a couple extra bucks and make your car sound a little more grunty 😁
That’s federally illegal in most states in America, he stated so in the video and it’s a pretty well known authoritarian fact that most Americans know, we can’t do anything fun or that saves us money “legally”, Lol.

He only recommends Toyotas. I don't think he is into anything but stock car configurations

How much do they get for the metals?

Same in the US.
DG Really?! I thought the UK was a perfect utopia without crime!

Clog up your engines!

Being stuck in heavy rush hour traffic really makes me appreciate people being required to have catalytic converters.

H
Robert Garcia ,I’m not a mechanic.dont get what you’re saying.been working on 1996 4 runner .im starting to wonder if I’m going restarted! Are you saying lacquer thinner is lacquer thinner no matter where you get it? If it’s clogged can’t you just break that honeycomb stuff up and put it back on for a straight flow?
How often would you recommend cleaning the catalytic converter with the lacquer thinner? Additionally, how much should it be driven until the next gas tank fillup? Got a 1996 camry with about 250,000 miles.
Is this Robert Garcia, "I didn't did it?", SSSA?
@@wbwills2 Yup that's exactly what Scotty means. It's a joke. Laquer thinner is the same, no matter where you get it and is not special to any one field. You can find it anywhere including your local hardware store. As for you answer on breaking up the honeycomb inside your cat. conv., Yes you can and you will have better flow since there will be no restriction, but you will set a Check Engine Light on because the o2 sensor will pick it up immediately, not to mention your vehicle would run less efficiently resulting in less mpg. Not to mention failed smog issues.

I tried the lacquer thinner then wound up with an EVAP leak. Be careful with what model you have, where the fuel pump is, etc. I later discovered the port for one of my O2 sensors had broken off. So, also, try to diagnose before just throwing things around.

Slower car = not cool.
Therefore all catalytic converters must go.
Your obviously never driven a nice car that needs the signal from the O2 sensor to run well, without a cat you could make your car run rich/lean etc, you should make sure your vehicle doesnt need it before you remove it.

If there isn't any negative side effects from running lacquer thinner then i guess it's worth a shot with my p0420 code

A very clear and comprehensive review. Thanks for making me smarter on Monday. I think I'll take the rest of the week off....
I was in the middle of watching a Scotty Kilmer video, seriously?
well the vacuum leak thing isnt likely because the ecu compares the front o2 sensor to the rear o2 sensor. if the front 02 sensor is lean then the rear o2 sensor will also be lean and the ecu will normally know this and throw a different code. there are exceptions though, but for the most part the bad cat code is just that. But what caused the cat to go bad in the first place. If its plugged then you need to find out why or your new one will fail too.
My cat ain't clogged, he just did a poo on the carpet.
Lmao it's car talk not cat talk or is it lol 😂
Any ULTRA permatex sealant is just fine. It's the regular sealant that will clog up sensors.
Lol I live In Florida...don’t have to worry about all this state inspection nonsense🤣
That sounds awesome,,, im In Canada and avoid inspections for years,,,i know my car is great,, stickers don't make anything run, il spend that money on gas,,if a catilic converter fails from rust ,,i can assure you there will be strait pipe welded on instead,,
We use to have them but they stopped in mid late 90s.
No inspection means junky cars on the road with higher fatalities.
In the UK, we have garages which specialise in tyres, brakes and exhausts, one of their favourite tricks is to jam a long object down into the catalytic converter to break it, and then tell you it needs a new one, "because it's got a rattle".
