I owned a few older Mercedes Benz cars years ago. They had the oil bath type air filter. Once a year, I drained the oil out of them, washed the filter element, allowed it to dry, added fresh oil to the oil bath, then put the filter back in & locked it down with the clamps. Those cars had well over 400,000 miles on them when I sold them, except for the fin tail one. That car went to the wreckers. I had a piece of steel flick up from a car ahead of me, and it bounced under the car then ripped a big hole in the floor pan.

The problem with K&N filters is the correct balance of filter oil. K&N is great for dusty conditions where oil does a great job of holding back the dust. Too much oil causes the mass sensor problems and not enough oil leads to poor filtration. I think K&N is risky for a daily driver, yet great for a track car or industrial or service engines that are well maintained.

I did a mileage test on a dirty filter then again with a new one and the difference was 1 mile per gallon improvement with a new filter, so when someone says your pissing money away with a dirty filter it's not really that bad.

K&N air filters are the biggest waste of money going. I put one in my F150 and I saw absolutely no difference in power or mileage. When I got dirty, I threw it out and I put in a regular paper one and it worked just fine. Save your money.

Very first DIY thing I ever tried to do was replace my own filter… I figured that was such a no-brainer thing. I couldn’t possibly mess it up. The good news is that I did not mess it up, but the bad news was that I had apparently gotten it replaced the last time I had my oil changed and didn’t need to do it. What about say a 2005 ford focus that supposedly has a lifetime air-filter which is actually a thick foam filter that cant ever be serviced unless you completely change out the air-filter box which costs $200+ tax + filter element?

If you properly clean, dry, and oil your K&N filter, you won't have any issue with it. The oil should be allowed to properly dry before you stick it in your car and start driving again. That's why I have two, so I can just swap them out and always have a properly cleaned and dried one. Also, the thumbnail shows Scotty using Lucas oil stabilizer. While Lucas makes good products and states that it will not void a car's warranty; oil companies on the other hand, will not stand behind their oil if you have a claim for an oil issue if you use any additives, because it changes the way they designed the oil to operate. I've never heard of anything coming of this, and I've used the oil stabilizer and the PS/Trans Fluid additive without any issues.

Warranty? 😂. My cars are way beyond any warranites. And out of decades of buying warranties- only one time was it worth the initial expense.

Never buy gas when the truck is filling the underground tanks. Dumping fuel in the tank stirs up all the water and sediment on the bottom of the tank. It's designed to not suck ten inches from the bottom because that is where the water is. If they're dumping fuel they're stirring up all the crap in the tank that's going in your car.
