I wish you luck with your Cruze. My friends 2017 Cruze with 26,000 miles just had a cylinder go out. It was 4000 dollars to fix... luckily his warranty covered it
@@walamo4796 there's a known issue on the 2016/2017 Cruze where the pistons break and screw up the cylinder walls. The updated design that they're replacing them with doesn't have the issue, and neither do the 2018/19 models. It doesn't happen to all 2016/17 cruzes though, which is why I'm sure there's not a recall. They just know the ones that will fail will do it during the warranty period.

2:25 wow ive been jumping cars wrong for 20 years! 😲 I always just held revved up rpms on good car and had them start the bad car, then disconnected them both
Read the comments section. It's loaded with stories of people burning out voltage regulators and alternators by running both cars while jump starting. But, hey, do what you want.
Hi Scotty. I enjoy all the information you give. My father was a mechanic and you remind me of him! You are very knowledgeable in your field as my dad was. Thank you!
Yes me to. I gas until the gas no longer disappears down the gas cap housing.I'm sure the evap system in my truck is NO GOOD ANYMORE. O well live n learn.
This is why my mom takes her car to the mechanic, my dad still does things the old way. It worked great in 1978, but today it’s not the right way anymore.
Thanks for the tip about disconnecting the jumper car before stating the jumped car. I grew up in Minneapolis and we always jump started cars the old way.
@@marks6663 Watch Scotty again. He says to use the good battery to recharge the weak battery for 10 minutes, and then disconnecting the batteries and trying to start the car. Of course, you could just use a battery charger if you have mains power nearby.
I am 73 & I thought I knew a fair amount about cars. Every time I watch one of your videos I learn something more. Thank you so much. You really are the very best.
Any one can use a multimeter. Pulling the cable off the alternator is a great way to destroy the electronics as Scotty states. I do give him credit for something.
I agree 100% with you. I never realized about overtopping the fuel. Plus, I feel that these so-called quick oil places ruin one's car. They're always trying to push or sell these additives for your engine. One doesn't even know if they put the proper grade oil. You don't see the cans anymore.
Scotty these are truly words of wisdom! I see every one of those situations routinely. Old school tricks no longer apply but it is difficult to convince customers of that. I'm guilty of the jump starting thing myself. I kept burning out voltage regulators in my Dodge so I quit jump starting people. A wise tech told me it was because I kept the engine running when the other person started their car.
This was new information for me too. Scotty usually just reinforces what i already know but every once in a while, he teaches me something. Best, most unbiased, most informed mechanic I've found anywhere.
Never considering the effect of two alternators running at the same time, learned something new today....Never considered plugging up the evap canister with fuel either!
I'm discovering by watching your videos that a lot of car things I've been taught are based on really old cars!! Thanks for teaching great solid information!!!
"...it will cost $1000.00 or more to repair..." I buy my cars for $500.00, so doubling the purchase price to repair makes fiscal sense only to government.
Back in the mid 80's I worked for a company that had a Dodge pick up as the off site yard goat. The company expected 100k miles out of it when they bought it so they were going to get 100k miles out of it logic be damned. About 5000 miles before it would have been sold for scrap the transmission went out of it so they put a brand new $5-7000 tranny (and some other repairs) in a truck that was worth about $500.
@@Anthony-fd8mh The point of writing of something as expense is if you are going to benefit from it in some way and pay less tax at the same time. To buy something and throw it away, just for the sake of writing off some expense does not make sense.
Where do you live where you can get a car that runs and drives even semi-reliably for $500? Here in in Nebraska, it seems like $2000-2500 is the starting point for used cars that runs and drives, and doesn’t immediately need major repairs.
Sounds like good advice. Using a battery charger/starter combo will fry an alternator. Been there, done that. Also, the idiots at Jiffy Lube. Sorry, no hard feelings; will use a mix-all antifreeze in your car. I had a Chevy Cavalier. Uses Dextron. The green stuff will make the water pump leak. After putting the Dextron back in, the seals swole & the leak stopped. Listen to this guy!
That two alternators explanation makes no sense. The voltage you see across the battery should be DC. The only problem I can imagine is if the donor car has a weak battery too and the recipient car's starting attempts to draw very high currents from the donor car's alternator.
That actually makes sense. You need the battery only, what's the point of having donor running, battery is alive anyways. And when dead car starts drawing current from running donor, voltage may fluctuate and cause damage in running electronics, because voltage is dependent on current being drawn. So just keep donor not running and keep it safe.
Scotty, I'm really glad to have found your channel. There has been so many different things (do`s and dont's) that I have learned from your videos. I just wish I had found you sooner. I have been topping off my gas tank to the limit, not knowing that I could damage the sensor. Now I have a "service your engine soon" light coming on. Thanks for all your experience and expertise. Scotty, I'm guilty of topping off the gas. I won't do that any more. I hope I didn't damage anything. BTW I've watched many of your videos & always learned something new. Keep up the good work.
After driving a 86 Ford pick up for 28 years, I ended up buying a 2008 Ford Edge. One day, I ended up over filling it, and filled the whole E-Vap canister up with gas. (Didn’t know about this, or what happened, or what I did to make my vehicle to stop running right) It was very expensive to have it Fixed. I wish I’d seen this video a long time before that happen. I really learn so much information from these Scotty Kilmer videos, it’s crazy.
You're great Scott. Many of us are afraid to take our vehicles to the mechanic, because we don't want to be swindled. One mechanic at a shop was talking about replacing my solenoid, but he couldn't get to it that day because they were busy. My car malfunctioned at the gas station, and a passer-by/good samaritan who was a mechanic, knew exactly what my problem was, and fixed it in 1-2 minutes. He didn't ask for money, but I gave him $40 bucks. That was a blessing.
Lots of times the autozone ppl will help and also internet people on forums etc are very helpful. It’s always nice to give nice people money, I try to insist and say to take their wife or someone out to dinner etc if they try not to accept it:)
Wow... I've been jump-starting from a running engine AND over-inflating to improve mileage and lengthen refilling intervals. No mas! Thank you, sir, very helpful!
Good video, thanks Scotty. You probably saved people a lot of heartache with this video. I myself at 63 y/o used to do a lot of those things you mentioned, i.e., remove the negative cable to determine if the alternator was working. If a person isn't actively working in the mechanic world, it's easy to miss some of these points. Appreciate you and your videos.
a simple test is headlights, if they dim when idling, either your battery is failing or alternator bushes. With the newer cars, batteries only last around 3 years. Huge power draws running computers and all the electronic gear. Some jump cables have a voltage regulator on them, as soon as the car starts, disconnect
I've been doing the connection correctly. That's how my Dad showed me 60 years ago, but shutting off the boosting car is new. We used to rev the heck out of it while starting the disabled car! Of course my latest car owners manual says not to jump start it (or use it to jump start another vehicle) under any circumstances.
You always give good advice what irks me why don't they put a trap door to get to the fuel pump in the car made that way so they don't have to drop the tank
Thanks for your tips Scotty, you come across as someone who knows his business and you help us older folk to adapt to new tech. The kip of your garage worries me though...
GREAT info on the batteries. My father in law is blind in one eye because he hooked that negative up to the battery years ago when he worked in a garage and the battery blew up in his face.
Back in the 70’s I was a student and changed tires for a few years until they trained me starting and charging systems. I got to be well versed in that, and proud of that. The only thing I trust myself to do these days is check oil and tire pressures. Good video 👌
I bought a $ 35.00 power pack to start cars at auto part store very handy have used it a couple of times helping people out to get there car started. That way no worries about screwing up
Oops! I used fill my tank to the cap while going on long trips to give me longer drive times before needing to fill it up again. I won't be doing that anymore. Also the battery jumping tip was interesting. Thanks for the tips Scotty.
In high school I worked for Goodyear. We sold automotive batteries. My first job out of high school was at a lead smelter. We tore down old automotive batteries and smelted the lead. My last job was at a major automotive battery manufacturer. Your advice on jump starting cars is spot on accurate. However, hydrogen can build up inside the battery. If the battery died because of a short inside the battery, that short can ignite the hydrogen during the jump starting or charging procedures. I've seen more than a few batteries blow up. Attach the negative jumper to the metal part as you said and KEEP YOUR FACE AWAY FROM THE BATTERY. When a battery blows up, usually the top comes apart. Battery acid and pieces of plastic can cause serious injuries. I've seen so many batteries blow that I carry safety glasses in my pickup, just in case. A pair of $10 safety glasses is cheap compared to the alternative. BTW, I really enjoy your channel.
In my opinion this video right here is the platinum standard video for all car ownership. Follow Scotty's advice here and you cant go wrong. Very smart!

soli Sanchez isn’t there also something about cell phones? How many times have you heard of them causing a gas explosion? They also say to kill your car and I never do unless the wench in the booth makes me.
It's also dangerous, gas can spill out and get on the tires and road so you will spin out and possibly wreak.

Thanks, Scotty. Also: Never drive your car! This creates wear which eventually destroys your engine. Leave it in the garage, or if you live in Texas, in the driveway.
True, but its a good idea to start it up every now and then to keep the fuel system clean and all the seals in your engine lubricated

Read the comments section. It's loaded with stories of people burning out voltage regulators and alternators by running both cars while jump starting. But, hey, do what you want.
Yep me too.
Hi Scotty. I enjoy all the information you give. My father was a mechanic and you remind me of him! You are very knowledgeable in your field as my dad was. Thank you!

Im guilty of always trying to put as much gas in my tank as possible.
Thanks for telling me, Scotty!

My wife's not going to be happy when I tell her.
Yes me to. I gas until the gas no longer disappears down the gas cap housing.I'm sure the evap system in my truck is NO GOOD ANYMORE. O well live n learn.
I ruined my charcoal canister dining this just like Scotty said can happen. Cost me $150 for the part and a pain to install. I’ll never top off again!
Well, if this is true to not overfill, then what happens when gas sloshes around in your tank? Think about that, same concept.
This is why my mom takes her car to the mechanic, my dad still does things the old way. It worked great in 1978, but today it’s not the right way anymore.
I NEVER knew that you shouldn't top off the gas. I've always done this. That stops TODAY!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the tip about disconnecting
the jumper car before stating the jumped car. I grew up in Minneapolis and we always jump started cars the old way.
no. If you do that, the car won't start. The cables must be connected to both cars to start. You disconnect immediately after it starts.
@@marks6663 Watch Scotty again. He says to use the good battery to recharge the weak battery for 10 minutes, and then disconnecting the batteries and trying to start the car. Of course, you could just use a battery charger if you have mains power nearby.

You can also use a multimeter to see if it’s charging if you know how to read the voltage.
Exactly.
Aren’t u supposed to be dead?
Any one can use a multimeter. Pulling the cable off the alternator is a great way to destroy the electronics as Scotty states. I do give him credit for something.
That, and make sure that the multimeter is set to DC voltage, not AC voltage.
Backdoor Slutz 9, that little lightbulb can’t keep me down.
I can recall having to replace alternators shortly after giving someone an emergancy jump start over the last 40 years
Scott ain't wrong
You're lucky you didn't have to replace computer modules! $$$
See my earlier reply. Charger/boosters fry them too.
"...it will cost $1000.00 or more to repair..."
I buy my cars for $500.00, so doubling the purchase price to repair makes fiscal sense only to government.
Kryten428 I wonder if they wrote that off on their taxes as a business expense?
@@Anthony-fd8mh The point of writing of something as expense is if you are going to benefit from it in some way and pay less tax at the same time. To buy something and throw it away, just for the sake of writing off some expense does not make sense.
Where do you live where you can get a car that runs and drives even semi-reliably for $500? Here in in Nebraska, it seems like $2000-2500 is the starting point for used cars that runs and drives, and doesn’t immediately need major repairs.
Tyler Brown I think he’s talking about the 80s
Sounds like good advice. Using a battery charger/starter combo will fry an alternator. Been there, done that. Also, the idiots at Jiffy Lube. Sorry, no hard feelings; will use a mix-all antifreeze in your car. I had a Chevy Cavalier. Uses Dextron. The green stuff will make the water pump leak. After putting the Dextron back in, the seals swole & the leak stopped. Listen to this guy!
I never do that top off thing.
I learn so much from some of Scottys videos.
Never knew about not running the good car’s engine during a jumpstart
Because it's bullshit. 2 alternators running? 😱
12V + 12V = 12V
The connections are parallel.
That two alternators explanation makes no sense. The voltage you see across the battery should be DC. The only problem I can imagine is if the donor car has a weak battery too and the recipient car's starting attempts to draw very high currents from the donor car's alternator.
@@matthewgardiner9015 , thats if its hooked up wrong.
@@lastdeadmouse7 I hear Scotty say a lot of stuff that is bullshit.
Literally.... I wish i lived in Texas because I would totally have you as a mechanic. Bonus points for knowledge factor.
Trust me, no you don't!!!!

They didn't teach me anything about not jump starting cars that way or not topping gas off in my mechanics class, just learned something yo!
