HONDA RIDGELINE vs. LANDCRUISER vs. JEEP on 40 Deg HILL CLIMB!

  • This isn't over sensationalizing, this is simply an obstacle where a vehicle's capability ALONE isn't enough. This doesn't mean the Landcruiser and Jeep have bad drivers, I have a lot of respect for people that don't want to risk rolling their vehicle (I identify as one of those people).
This is about drivers being confident in their vehicles capabilities, knowing what they're getting themselves into, and executing a plan with very little room for error.

Hey all, the owner of the White Honda Ridgeline is @k20nartpro on Instagram.
He is one of the best Honda Tuners in the USA, holding onto the quickest Civic type R quarter mile record for over a year at 10.1 seconds, and he makes a living building engines at his company NewAge Performance. He created the B.A.L.L. System, which uses two Hurst drag racing line locks to brake the front wheels individually. He has custom fit Bilstein shocks into the midsized Honda platform and has come up with a way to elongate struts to match longer springs for more travel. His company is based out of Ventura, California.

I've got a 1st Gen built Tundra, and I guarantee you I could air down my tires to 15 psi and crawl right up that with no momentum needed.
#1. None of their tires appear aired down.
#2. I have lockers. Not sure about them.
#3. I built a custom tool box that goes the entire length of my bed, like a deck, and specifically keep multiple hundreds of pounds past the rear axle in tools to balance the weight while I'm crawling.
Even with the high output V8 with multiple bolt on HP mods, I can't spin the tires even in 2wd unless it's wet. I spent a decade playing with various designs to maximize traction on this truck. I would crawl right up it.
Also my truck is street legal and a daily driver. It's not a buggy or anything like that.

@Steven-gv1ke …… we all aired down, some more than others. The Ridgeline went down to 20 PSI. The location is pinned in the video, so show us 😃. The Landcruiser 80 is triple locked, and he got up after another attempt (shown in the video at 5:31) but he couldn’t just “crawl it”.

Jon, I'm the one with white fj80. I'm a rock crawler kind of guy. I have 30 + years in off roading. My next attempt was just throttling it up and made it easily. Any of those vehicles were capable of making it without any problems. Looks scarier then it is. There is a video of me climbing that rock pile next to it , that I was the only one who attempted it. I did get stuck right at the end which was my fault. The guy sitting with me asked if I wanted a spot, which I should have done.
It was absolutely awesome cruising with all of you. Great bunch of guys

Have a 2020 black edition with a leveling kit, skid plate, replaced stock with BFG tires and I've been extremely impressed. Refuses to get stuck, even in the nasty clay type of mud we have here. Maintains traction in the steepest of climbs and has enough clearance to handle decommissioned backroads which are common here. But probably the greatest difference over my old Silverado is how smooth it drives over washboard roads are. If you like to fish around here you travel alot of washboard roads which bounces unsprung weight and Ridgelines is very low, add independent suspension and you literally don't notice it. Would highly recommend for people who need a truck that'll take you where you want to go on the weekends but is easy to live with the other 5 days of the week.

I use to drive a FJ cruiser, and the thing I like the most is how precise the steering is. The Toyota would just float around on the highway and gave me a very uneasy feeling, ldriving past 65 mph id have to make so many micro adjustments. I also drove a GMC 2500 work truck, and that drove better.

Some crazy stuff in this video. I got a 2008 HONDA Ridgeline. Fun facts, runs perfect 100k miles, only replaced the battery and belt. A st of brakes and a few new tires. IT goes through 4 ft. of snow or soft sand easily. I have never needed put it in the locking 4X4 low , as the auto 4x4 feature works like a smooth clock. It has pulled out stuck DODGE trucks before. Nothing beats the reliability, wishbone suspension or the trunk in bed feature.
It will be hard to switch from the 1st gen, but HONDA is the best.

Hey, John is absolutely amazing that you single-handedly started the niche before Honda could even come up with the idea of the trail sport with your passport. I purchased my passport around the same time as yours and definitely wanted to fix it up unfortunately, the bug of a sports sedan tickled my fancy, and I’m currently owner of a 23 TLX type-S I love it to pieces but sometimes speeding on a close professional tracks, wink wink doesn’t take the box for adventure for me. I am highly debating between the 24 Ridgeline or a 24 pilot trail sport do you have any knowledge of a True off roader coming to Honda maybe in the form of a new Ridgeline or new passport I definitely don’t have to rush at all my brother currently has a 23 pilot Trail sport which I’ve driven multiple times and really like please give me your advice…. Why can’t Honda take the SxS Knowldge and apply it to the SUV/Truck world at honda

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  3 месяца назад +4

I don’t know what Honda has in store for the 2025 Passport or Ridgeline, and that Honda Designer Joe Park won’t be telling me anything 😂. I’m actually worried the next gen, while it has a more capable AWD system, might be going soft in other areas. You can’t lock in the gears, it has been shown to stall, the rocker panels is completely built into the doors (like many other soft AWDs). Also, the companies I am partnered with haven’t been able to build a big lift, which is probably due to the platform going soft and sticking the differentials up higher like all the other soft AWDs. I would wait 😃. Honda makes their own transmission, so it would be awesome if they surprise us with function that we would want, like being able to hold gears and more manual control. Maybe they’ll blow our minds and implement portal axles! Haha, doubt it, but Honda is known for thinking outside the box to come up with solutions (like the suspension for the civic type R)

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  3 месяца назад +4

I’ll add that mechanically, it should be able to drive up Hells Gate in Moab with a skilled driver, but from what I’ve seen of the next generation is that there’s digital Nannie’s to ensure the vehicle’s long term reliability, which look like they would also cock block from driving up Hells Gate. The Ford Bronco Sport badlands can do it, but they also have parts grenading.

    • @mmaxx9915

I think if Honda from the factory would do the drop frame lift, include better underclading, aggressive brake slip control and a 55to1 first gear for the Trailsport version it would be a game changer and open up market value for Honda. I know I would be trading my 2020 for a new one.

John I’m attempting to do similar to my 2021 Honda HRV Lx, I know it sounds crazy (I love my little Honda) I’ve already increased my tire and wheel geometry from stock to 225/17 on Toyo ATII and it made a huge difference in handling! Is it possible to lift it 3” more?
Also, I have a K&N in it but the engine (1800) seems as if it’s not using all its capabilities?
Is there a way to increase: mpg, hp more?
I’m from Michigan and it handles snow fine

I must admit, that lifted ridgeline looks totally badass and great crawling skills. I have a 2023 Z71 Colorado and thinking about just trading it in for a Ridgeline trailsport. Not that the Ridgeline is 'better' (the turbo 4 of the Z71 is awesome, drives like a diesel) but I came to realize honestly I just use it for a daily driver most days and do very light towing with a 700# trailer. Plus the Ridgeline suspension will certainly handle my washboard roads around here better than my Z71, which likes to hop around like a spider monkey all hopped up on Mt. Dew.

Sorry for the late reply Mike. You can fit a 30.5” tire with slight rub, or you can shave the pinch weld or use a Traxda axle relocation kit to fit larger. I run 33” tires by shaving the pinch weld, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you know what you are doing.

Considered many options, including a 1st gen Ridgeline, when I started building my own offroad experience.
After much research and learning ended up with a 3xl #80series and have never looked back. Might even be buried in it.
    Bottom line is 2 things:
    1 - solid axles
    2 - axle locks
Everything else is a bandaid or near-peer.

I only tackle obstacles I encounter on my adventure, I have found myself in situations where I had to tackle an obstacle that I did not think the vehicle could do, but there was no other way out of my situation, and surprisingly enough my Grand Cherokee did it.

4.5” lift, 34” tires, slight regear, Bilstein rear shocks, elongated struts, and it can brake the front wheels individually. (BALLS - Brake Aid Line Lock System).
Sounds complicated, but these mods actually aren’t that expensive. I have the similar mods in my Green Honda, but I also weigh it down with a roof top tent and overlanding gear.

Is this Honda Ridgeline modded? I think so. Lifted/skid plates/larger tires? I have a 21 stock, and I would never even consider trying that 1st part or at 10:24 in. Though the IVTM-4 system has proven amazing on 6" deep snow and ice, GREAT traction, I would be too afraid of tearing the front chin of of damaging something underneath. have hesitated to even take it off road at all. Its really simple to see ..The Ridgeline even the Cayenne is going up more on the left (easier side) ..If you look where the Wrangler and Toyota's right tires are at the where its a little darker that side is more of a dip on the climb causing wheelspin ..Its so much more of a dip that it creates a shadow

  • @hybridstiger

It would be good to talk to the Jeep and Land Cruiser owners to get an idea of what happened, did land Cruiser not have any lockers, did it go into low range? Was the jeep a 2wd, did it also lack lockers or knowledge in low range? jeep and land Cruiser failed without knowing why so that's unfortunate, could be inexperienced like you mentioned vs experienced Ridgeline owner with awd and it's traction control. Like you I'm surprised jeep and land Cruiser failed but that gorman obstacle attracts all type of experience leveles and comfort levels too like you mentioned.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring

@josephpark421 that’s the best way to learn, and sometimes aids can get you into trouble. I learned from a very experienced Jeep wheeler. He taught me how to left foot brake, and showed my friends that engaging lockers can lead to sliding, and…. That can make someone roll off a cliff. Yeah, absolutely amazed how many did it. He used just enough throttle (about half way) and just held it there.

Aside from all the reasons why any reasonable capable 4wd may or may not make it up this, I'd caution anyone without a 'real' transfer case (a few cars today have a 'low' range that is just a lock in 1st gear) to do stuff like this because tis really going to stress your transmission. If you want to do stuff like this, just get the most capable vehicle. and as far as sending it when you lose traction...just don't.
