Let's clarify the 10mm had a brass fmj, while the 40 and 45 were copper. I think a revisit, with the same bullets, would show much different results. However, the 10mm would likely still win, just not by the margin shown here. Another great vid, WTW.

@@noahpeters1873 Because, if you're going to do a comparison, do it apples to apples. For those of us who do understand, this is just another fun WTW vid., and that's why we love his content. To those trying to learn, it can be a bit misleading. I could take this same test, but load the .40 with a hand-turned, pointed, solid brass bullet, and make it appear the .40 is the absolute most powerful, fastest, most penetrating round out there. You and I may know the truth, but some people have no clue.

40 s&w is cut down 10mm specifically because weak wristed and small handed FBI agents had owies from 10mm. 40 S&W will NEVER beat 10mm unless you dumbed down 10mm to its weakest load.

It seems to me that the .40s&w did exactly what you need, especially home defense, with greater energy dispersal and less penetration(I may be biased..I carry 40s&w😀).
Side note, I watched the 10mm in action vs large wild hogs, and it was purely devastating....it dropped those animals like nothing...very impressive.

@Ken... Nope. The 10mm came first. 10x25mm to push a 200 gr at 1,200 fps was the design parameter. Too much recoil for women in the FBI, so they cut it down to 10x22mm pushing a 180 gr at 1,000 fps. This is the .40 S&W. The 10mm Mag is a 10x32mm that gets close to a .41 mag, except for all of the wasted space in the bottom of a semi-auto shell with the extractor base height, and large radius in the bottom to support out of the chamber. Close but no cigar to the .41 or .44 mags at .410 and .429 x 34mm straight wall rimmed shells.

I loved the setup and the testing medium. The plates seem to be a really good way to compare penetration. Your setup with the cinder blocks is simple but very effective. I like simple inexpensive things that work well 👍. Great idea. However, as noted by others, comparing these three different barbell lengths makes the test scientifically very incorrect. The controlling variables (barrel length being one of them, the amount of gun powder in the cartridge and the weight of the bullet) were different. I understand that you worked with what you had. 👍💪

The .40 expanded more than the 10 or the .45. I think that may have skewed the test a bit. Cool though ! I knew the 10 would go farther. wasn't sure about the other two. I thought the .45 would go a bit farther than the .40 , but not that much further. Again , the bullet expansion decreased the number of plates the .40 penetrated.

One upgrade that Colt made to help the Delta platform handle the increased pressure and increased slide speed of the 10mm was a stronger spring AND they removed to top of the circular cut in the frame that the slide release passes through.....this allows for frame flex necessary to reduce (eliminate?) the cracking of the frames that was the initial problem with some (during excessive training sessions with the secret service for which it was developed and adopted by). Look it up, and check yours with the slide removed....the hole should look more like a "u" or horseshoe rather than a circle. 😉✌️

I use hornady xtp for deer and the 10mm rocks them out to 75 yards I've only ever shot 2 and hit both where the neck meets the head and both dropped in thier tracks , honestly I would feel confident hitting them anywhere in the lung , heart , neck etc with full power loads so I could definitely see it dropping pigs without any hesitation

It would have if he used Underwood 10mm ammo.

Ooooh, those three bullets look shiny!
And the .40 was mushroomed, so is that why it didn't go through so many plates?

Yeah that was a defense round, the whole point of those is to not over penetrate. Kind of questioning this test a bit. Plus the barrel lengths weren't equal. Too many variables.

      40 isnt a defense round

Kyle B: It's not a scientific test. WhoTeeWho does it for the #LOL - and that is precisely why I'm here :-D

WhoTeeWho: speaking as a near illiterate when it comes to ammunition: if the .40 is not a defensive round, is it then an offensive round? And I don't even know if "offensive round" is even the proper term.

@@WHOTEEWHO interesting how it mushroomed and split symmetrical then, wonder how a different manufacturer fmj would run. Still very interesting test. 10mm looks like a beast of a round, I'd get a 10mm next if the ammo wasn't so expensive, thinking 45acp will be my next purchase.

The dramatic difference in bullet expansion explains the performance of the .40. Every test I’ve seen confirms the performance of the 10mm, but the question of stopping power is a different question. This test shows bullet selection and intended use is as important as caliber.

Thanks for the awesome comparison, I love the 10 mm . Do you ever compare jacketed lead bullets vs. solid copper deer rifle calibers. I recently started hunting with solid copper to avoid lead poisioning the meat.

I do have quite a bit of copper rounds
