WTF Happened to ROB SCHNEIDER?

  • There was a time in the early 2000s when it looked like Rob Schneider was going to be the next Adam Sandler. A fellow Saturday Night Live vet, Schneider stole scenes in a few Happy Madison comedies, particularly The Waterboy (“you can do it!”) and his solo star vehicle debut, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, was a smash, raking in over 90 million dollars worldwide. His follow-ups, including The Animal, Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo, The Benchwarmers and The Hot Chick (where he memorably switched bodies with Rachel McAdams), were critically savaged but still made money. Yet, the budgets got smaller. So he gradually started making his way to the DTV market while still appearing in the occasional Sandler flick, usually under heavy makeup and often portraying another ethnicity.
So what happened? Did Schneider’s politics or style of comedy relegate him to a smaller audience? We take a look at his career in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, which shows that perhaps the notion of Schneider’s decline is overblown, as the guy is still incredibly busy and undoubtedly a beloved MVP of Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison ensemble.
WTF Happened to this Celebrity is written by Brad Hamerly and Taylor James Johnson. Taylor James Johnson is also the editor, narrator and producer!

I met him several years ago at a comedy show at a casino in Northern Wisconsin, nicest guy...they said he had an hour after the show for pictures, at the hour mark there was still 40 people in line, he refused to leave until everyone got a picture and a handshake or hug. Then later that night he was in the hotel lobby chatting at the front desk and invited me over to listen to his stories, it was awesome hearing what he would tell about Adam, Chris and David especially.

Rob Schneider is best when he doesn't try so hard. He played Deuce Bigalow pretty straightforward and it worked really well. His small role as the landlord in Grandma's Boy is always one I think of, too. Just easy-going and actually seeming like he understood the role. His versatility is overshadowed by too much screen time- showcasing his overacting and any badly written dialogue.

Think it's safe to say when an actor finds themselves in ridiculous kids films, chances are they're thinking about their kids and not their their own fans or audience. To be able to watch an animated movie with your kid/s and, if you're really lucky, they actually love your character best. I imagine that's gotta be a great feeling.

Coming from where I come from I didn't see Schneider on SNL until years after I'd seen him in stuff like Dredd. And on SNL his copy-room/coffee room guy was sweet, even making lines about Sting looking for coffee. Then, suddenly he was trying to be the leading man in crap Sandler passed on. Oh, what a far cry from complaining he couldn't be on the field with Kathy Ireland and Scott Bakula. Also, he was flawless in Down Periscope.
Then, many years later, I read about how his feud with Roger Ebert was actually more like an intervention and allowed him to step back and re-evaluate some of the decisions he had been making.
Until I saw the films he had been appearing in. Dude seriously needed to break ties with Sandler. Nothing from that collaboration has reviewed well. Guy is way better than that shit.

Schneider is a classy guy. I was standing outside the locker room after an MLB All-Star Celebrity game. There was a cart waiting in the hallway to transport the celebs to wherever. The cart only had room for 2 people. Schneider, Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, and a female celebrity friend stepped into the long hallway. Robinson was already quite fragile at time. Schneider notice there's no room to carry 3 people. He offered his seat to Robinson and the female friend to get on the cart and that he'll walk instead. Ever since then, he had my respect.

Early Rob Schneider was just trying to make it in Hollywood, and he turned in good supporting roles. He's pretty versatile. But what Mel Brooks called "the inevitable afterbirth" seems to have had it in for him from the start. It's hard to blame Schneider for leaning heavily into his relationship with Adam Sandler when it's clear he was just going to be ground up by the critics and used as an easy shorthand for considering a movie bad.
