WTF Happened to ANTONIO BANDERAS?

- Every generation has its major heartthrob, and throughout the nineties, Antonio Banderas was the biggest. Having risen to prominence in his native Spain, acting in a series of films for Pedro Almodóvar, Banderas was brought to America to co-star with Armand Assante in The Mambo Kings. From there, roles in Philadelphia, Interview with the Vampire and more followed, and Banderas probably could have coasted on his looks for years. But, rather than do that, he did the unexpected - he became a legit action star in one of the best action movies of the nineties, Robert Rodriguez’s Desperado. He followed it up with a bad guy turn in Assassins opposite Sylvester Stallone but broke through in a major way when he played the title role in The Mask of Zorro. To this day, he remains the definitive screen Zorro, and his sexy duel with Catherine Zeta-Jones is considered a classic.
Banderas has had his ups and downs at the box office in the years since. The Legend of Zorro proved to be an underwhelming sequel, while his follow-up to Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, got a mixed reaction from fans. After that, he had starring roles in the Spy Kids franchise, which demonstrated a flair for comedy, and had a major success voicing Puss in Boots in the Shrek franchise. However, by the 2010s, he was mainly doing DTV action flicks, although some of them, such as the underrated Automata, were actually pretty good. He seems poised for a comeback recently, earning raves and an Academy Award nomination for his role in Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory. In addition, he’ll be acting in the fifth Indiana Jones movie opposite Harrison Ford. Join us as we revisit his career in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity!

I love Antonio! Plus I like this narrator dude who ever he is

@@nicolamcguinness8689 I'm talking about the young narrator who did this video
Yeah, he’s pretty cheeky… Cool but cheeky
The Mask Of Zorro is one of the best action/adventure/fun movies ever!!!
Just watched it last weekend. Love it!
Dennis price was in school for scoundrels 1960 with terry Thomas Ian Carmichael Alastair Sim
FINALLY! Someone ELSE thinks so! =)
Some may disagree
Too bad Hollywood never make such movies anymore. 1990s-2000s were the best decades for film industry.
I love him. His charm and charisma is off the charts. He is one of my all time favourite actors.
Spaniard here. And yeah, I can assure you Antonio is beloved in Spain like you wouldn't believe. Not only because of his talent, but because he showed Spaniard actors everywhere that it was possible to go to Hollywood and be successful. He became a symbol, and opened the way for Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz a few years later.
Well even he is still active in Spanish film scenes. "Pain of Glory" (Dolor y Gloria) is still one of the best film I've watched in 2019
He's also quite handsome
he was my childhood. i still watch desperado (mariachi) once every year or 2
He was phenomenal in "Dolor y gloria" and for "Evita" was nominated for a Golden globe
Puss in boots always makes me laugh. Nothing happened to him though I never know why it’s titled this way. He’s still doing movies. Desperado and Assassins with Zorro are amazing. He makes me laugh as Zorro too. Ever since I was a little kid I saw Zorro in theaters and started to run around with a cape and hat like him with a sword.
He is so damn creepy in the skin I live in. Like Hannibal lector level. Def his most intense role I’ve seen him in. I recommend it, it’s a bit disturbing tho.
Security and Acts of Vengeance are great
He was great in the 13th Warrior. Awesome as the Nasonex Bee as well
Dennis price was in double dunk 1961 with Sid James Reginald beckwith terry Scott miles malleson Graham stark Desmond Roberts
What happened to The Hunted with Tommy Lee Jones? That was pretty good.
I didn’t see “ take the lead” in this clip. Really good film and he’s great in it
Not mentioned but Antonio was strongly considered for the role of the Phantom in the film adaptation of the musical ‘Phantom of the Opera’
He even took vocal lessons and sang alongside Sarah Brightman at a celebration of Andrew Lloyd Webber
Instead, Joel Schumacher cast Gerard Butler instead and that was an epic FAIL
Fell in love with him in a movie theatre in Rome while getting my Almodovar cherry popped, the year was 1987, the movie was 'La Ley del Deseo'
8:46 Original Sin if you watch the Unrated version of the movie, it's actually better than the theatrical cut.
Antonio Banderas I can watch in Anything. I love him as an actor, because he not just sexy, he's intriguing in practically every movie he is in.
The 13th Warrior is his best Film, I love that movie!
He played the very 1st superhero Zooro ...Zorro Released in 1920 mask of zoorro..mockup (voiceless) films..he acted in remake of Zoroo in 1995
Loved that movie. It came out in 1998.
Bravo
Uno dei migliori attori spagnoli insieme Cruz Javier bardem poi i fratelli Almodovar, poi miti sulle telenovelas
I thought the movie was just alright, but I liked his performance in Assassins (1995)
07:27 Am I the only one who was caught off guard by the bulgarian subtitles? o.O Едва ли.
You forgot to mention 1993's "The Mambo Kings".
Antonio was great in take the lead 😀
Martin balsam was in murder on the orient express 1974 with Richard widmark
He was great in Evita
I loved the 13th warrior, can't believe that it was a bomb
I never realized Antonio was in so many bad movies. I saw Ballistic in theaters!
A real inspiration!!!!
Antonio Banderas is my favorite actors I love the mask of zero and the desperado my favorite movie love it great actor.💪👍👏
Banderas is def one of the finest of his craft...
Bandera means flag...which I think is so appropriate for him considering that he has so many fans looking up to him
Hugh Laurie!?!?!?
I actually always called him Antonio Ban'badass'🤘
'Beyond the Edge' anyone?
I liked Evita.
Not sure how this works. But Mate, having commercials every 20 seconds really damages the experience of your videos.
No 13th warrior!
And to think that Luis Miguel almost played Zorro
Antonio! Ramses is number 1.ramses legs are number 1.
Antonio Banderas is one of the truly great "unawarded" actors of the last 30 years.
Why? Because he didn't won an oscar?
He won very important European Award - from Cannes to Berlin.
The real performers want to win those kind of awards.
@@fernandoDcampos 🤫
@@fernandoDcampos totally, for an spanish actor there are few things more important than being in one Almodovar movie and this guy has been in a ton of them
Great that you mention it, I thought he deserved the Golden Globe that year for Zorro. The acting, chemistry/on screen "shine" with his fellow actors and the physicality of the role should have earned him that Golden Globe.
"The 13th Warrior" is highly underrated, it may not be historically accurate (obviously) but the epicness of the story, characters and scenography is truly greatest thing in a epic fantasy genre.
Came here to comment this. My dad used to put it on for my brother and i when we were little 😂 the bad guys used to freak us out
Criminally underrated. I don't mind its historical inaccuracy since it's largely inspired by Beowulf. It's one of the movies where I always watch it if it comes on TV.
It was a really great movie, I cried.
One of my favourite movies.
@@ethinos2719
If you take to the account that "The 13th Warrior" is set in 922 A.D....
All I can name from the top of the head:
Ahmad smiths a broadsword into a shamshir, which were made since 12th century, he also does that without skill and in few hours instead of weeks with just a grindstone and a small forge. It would also made the sword brittle, different forging technique to form a curved sword.
Helfdane has Spanish conquistador's morrión and breastplate from 17th century.
Herger has Greek-looking set of scale armor, 16th century.
Buliwyf wears a Vandal helmet and parts of a 15th century knight's plate armor at the same time.
Weath has great kilt, a 16th century "skirt".
The scene with "arab horse" being small, actually the horses in that period of time were bigger than those of vikings as they had horses that had to withstand cold weather. Making the Viking horses smaller than Arab.
It's a complete shitstorm of clothing and equipment.
Not like it takes away fun from watching...
You guys should do a WTF happend to the oscars!
The 13th Warrior may have been a bomb, but it is probably one of the most underrated action movies of its time. I saw it in the theaters way back when, and I never fail to watch it if I see it on TV, or streaming. Do yourself a favor if you haven't watched it, it will be well worth your time.
Antonio Banderas: One of my favorite actors.
Mine too, he's so brilliant and charismatic, no matter how diverse the role may be!
He really deserves to get an Oscar. I love his work for more than 20 years now. Amazing actor
It sucks people don't like 13th warrior I thought it was pretty cool tbh
He was born in Málaga, Andalusia, Spain. I think is a little disrespectful to just say "somewhere in Spain", you don't do that to american actors
A couple of fun facts about that.
1. Pablo Picasso was also born in Málaga, so playing him was one of Antonio's lifelong dreams.
2. In the European Spanish dub of the "Shrek" movies he uses his natural Málaga accent. Well, he exaggerates it a bit for comedic effect. But it's still awesome to listen to. Fortunately, the rest of the dub is also great (even the celebrity cast members do a great job), thanks to the fact that it was directed by Spanish dubbing industry legend Gonzalo Abril. So I recommend it if you want to practice Spanish and are curious about the Spain accents.
In all fairness, from all his straight to video films, I actually liked Acts of Vengeance. It is actually my favorite film of his, and how I discovered stoicism and one of my favorite books of all time Medications by Marcus Aurelius. If it wasn't because of that film, I would have never discovered that philosophy that had helped me out through the pandemic and the lockdown. It is one I would recommend folks to watch.
4:35 - I saw assasins and was under the impression that Stallone had learnt his english lines phonetically as well.
I really enjoyed him in assassins I saw it a few years ago 🙂
From a distance older Antonio looks ALOT like older Mel Gibson.
The score and the sound of mask of zorro is something out of this world. I remember that great theater experience.
Absolutely right about the character becoming Antonio Banderas as much as vice versa. It isn't the first time Pedro Almodovar put himself in his movies, but those were always characters based on him. Pain and Glory was autobiographical to a degree where Antonio Banderas' ability was essential.
I genuinely like him.... I remember about two years ago saw a movie as him being an assassin that came back out of retirement when his family was ☠️☠️☠️
Dennis price was in tunes of glory 1960 with sir Alec Guinness sir John mills Allan cuthbertson Gordon Jackson Joan hickson susannah York John Fraser Duncan macrae Andrew Keir Richard leech Angus Lennie Fulton mackay

personally i think The 13th Warrior is one of his better movies

Sounds like you have a crush on Martin Balsam.
I can thank "Shrek" and the "Spy Kids" movie for introducing me to this charismatic actor! 😍

I love these WTF posts, really well written and researched, but this guy's narrative tone is just awful, truly cringe worthy! With respect, we are not 10yr olds, so please change it! 🙏
24:09-24:45
Banderas is actually doing better than ever
I Also Love The Adventures Of Zorro and Assassins But Didn’t Like Legend Of Zorro, Spy Kids 3 And 4 And Balistic Ecks VS Sever I thinks a Mediocre Film I don’t think it’s as Bad as a Critics Say And as Other Shitty Films it just had Terrible Action Sequences And an Incomprehensible Plot
One of my favorite film is The Skin I Live In (2011) Antonio Banderas and Pedro Almodovar.
Same, it's such a crazy movie.
Still waiting for Desperado 3
JoBlo should cover Ecks vs Sever, I think. Both of the leads were pretty popular for the time, and they both starred in that steaming pile. I wonder how that mess got made?
Most of the Antonio Banderas movies that didn't do well were ones I never heard of, or heard very little of. So, other than Ballitic, I suspect most of the failures were due to poor marketing.
WTF happened to Matthew Fox
How can u Mention Ballistic Ecks VS. Sever without Mentioning The Disastrous Track Record Of Franchise Pictures which Crashed and Burned In 2007 after a String Of Flops
"Automata" had a very interesting concept.
Banderas made it work.
Pick a Saturday afternoon and give it a watch. ;)
What happened to 13th Warrior!?! My favorite!!!
Dennis price was in a touch of the sun 1956 with Reginald beckwith Richard wattis frankie howerd Alfie bass Colin Gordon
Thick as thieves was decent, I thought
I and everyone I've spoken to all liked 13th warrior
A WTF video just on my birthday. Now that´s a gift.
Happy birthday
@@JeremySky Thank you. Appreciate it.
Dennis price was in devils island lovers 1974 with Howard vernon this was Dennis price last movie
I remember thinking Ballistic: Ecks Vs Sever was a horrible title as well lmaaao
I want him in another expandibles movie
The 13th Warrior bombed but it's still a good movie.
I'll just add his best movies were in my eyes the 13th warrior and even better desperado and once upon a time in Mexico he is truly one of the best actor's who should be recognised love him to bits 🥰
All true.. he is amazing! ou um ator extraordinário 🤟
femme fatale being great is one of the few times roger ebert had a good opinion.
He just started losing his hair that's all
Say his name: Antonio Banderas... Banderras... Banderrreas... You roll those _R_ s...
Banderas...
Dennis price was in good time girl 1948 with Herbert Lom Diana dors flora robson
The sword fight between him and Zeta Jones might be the height of human sexiness.
I Love The El Mariachi Films, Sin City And The Machete Films there Some my Favorite Robert Rodriguez Films Sadly he hasn’t made lot of Good Films since Sin City: A Dame to Kill For And I Don’t like his Shitty Kid Films
But Franchise Pictures had some Good Films That are Misunderstood like 3000 Miles to Graceland, Boondock Saints, A Murder Of Crows, Retrograde, Stormcatcher, Heist, The Pledge, The Whole 9 Yards, Get Carter, And Art Of War
That Security one was ok. The dog one was pretty awesome. But man that Puss in Boots intro is just genius! The Alien bit had me rolling! But that hairball scene was HILARIOUS AS HELL! He is Puss in Boots like you said. Everything about the character from the Zorro reference to the Spanish accent it just fit.
“Foote Ball” ???? “Foote” ??? 🤔🧐🤨
U only say it like that bcuz u Americans call it Soccer. Literally every place else say Football
Antonio wasted his window of opportunity. During the time of Desperado he was at his best looking, youngest, but roughest man phase. There were films out there that he could have done if he had decided to play on his looks. 12 Monkeys would have been a classic with Antonio instead of a bored Bruce Willis. The Mission Impossible series of films would have been perfect if Antonio had played the Tom Cruise role. Sadly, Antonio was too much like a woman, not wanting to trade on his sex appeal, but rather be seen as an ACTOR. Well, as we have seen from Steve McQueen, James Dean, and Clarke Gable you can be both.
Hey man great videos I like watching them a lot! I just have one request. Please, can you reduce those "funny" voice moments in your videos. I just cringe too much when I hear it..for example I always skip the first part when you say "we must begin at the beging..when he was born" I just can't hear that part, it makes me want to punch my screen.
Well, Antonio banderas always recognised as an Action Hero, but from when he started to play gay type characters , and promoted homosexuality then He Lost his respect from Old school action heroes whose always been decent, like Sylvester, Arnold, vandamme, Mel gibson, bruce willis, jackie and others..thats why man should be decent as Man .
I really enjoy your thing you do. Seriously! But you kind of dismissed ,The Thirteenth Warrior. I think this movie is one of his best.😎😎😎
I Honestly Really Like Antonio Banderas he’s a Good Actor I wish he do more Action Films Cause he’s Really Good In Action Films And Robert Rodriguez Films
I'm not a huge fan of antonio or anything but I do feel he is a pretty good actor when he want's to be. There's a few movie's I like that antonio is in or star's in. Yeah I don't see antonio in many movie's anymore. I agree though I actually enjoyed bullethead. I was surprised but it wasn't bad. It has some what of a horror feel to it but I actually enjoyed it and found it pretty entertaining. It's not a masterpiece or anything but it's a decent movie and it was better than I thought it was going to be.
The assassins was a good movie
Hey look I am in the minority who liked Black Butterfly,Security and Acts Of Vengeance
A year late on this one. You forgot to mention that the 13th Warrior became a small cult classic. With viewings across Universities both domestic and international.
Anthony Flags
It looks like Daniel day Lewis stole Antonio's look from pancho.look at him from there will be blood.same hat and mustache
3xs in my life I watched a movie and immediately rewound it to watch again. Desperado was 1 because it was so hot. He was so hot.
Ballistic is jsut one of the worst movies ever made... and not in a so bad its good way , its really bad a fuck! what were they thinking when they made the movie?
The movie wasn’t called “once upon a time in Mexico” it was called “desperado” even all the clips that were shown were from Desperado
Antonio has such an amazing & distinctive voice, he could probably have a second career as a VA
