hey I know it's been a year but... The creature Anderson turned into is called The King Of Thorns. The short version is that it's a vengeful wraith born as result of the souls of martyrs and those who have died as a result of religious persecution coming together and possessing and corrupting a good hearted individual for the sole purpose of venting thousands of years worth of anger and resentment on anything and everything around it until the host is either killed or inevitably disintegrates as a result of having all of those angry and vengeful souls forcefully drawn and trapped into their body with no other way out than for the host to...fall apart. Just thought I'd throw that interesting bit of lore out there.
That... kind of adds another level of tragedy to Anderson's decision. There's no doubt that he knew about this creature and what it would do to him, and he still went and did it. Hell, he probably figured he was going to die anyway in fighting Alucard (or not, my memory of Hellsing is a bit fuzzy), so why not take the chance with that holy relic.

Sure it pierced Christ's body but that doesn't nullify it's malicious purpose nor does it erase the resentment and hate that the people who used it to pin him to the cross channeled into it. That hate and resentment formed what's called a soul binding curse. Soul binding curses are curses that turn the afflicted into a monster, granting them powerful magics, enhanced senses, otherworldly strength, and animal like agility/reflexes. But all this comes at the cost of damning the afflicteds soul. This is an irreversible process that not only rids them of aspects like compassion, mercy, empathy, and remorse. In short they more or less become a beast driven by the worst and most primal aspects of their nature. It also completely numbs them to pain both emotional. And finally upon death the afflicted is condemned to hell. In other words Anderson had no chance of redemption what so ever. 😭
