Exactly. When every game is sold-out whether the team wins or loses (usually loses), there is no incentive for the bean counters to make the product better. The only way for fans to express their disappointment and dislike is to stop buying tickets. Until that happens, the Leafs will continue to underwhelm and underperform.
they were really good in 05-07 though winning the president's trophy one of those years. went to two straight conference finals. that's all four series wins right there. the leafs were mediocre for a very long time, and have been unable to get it done the last 8 years they've qualified for the playoffs, which is absolutely disgraceful but also a function of being in a tough division with Tampa and Boston (and now Florida). with the old seeding system they would have had a bunch of series as a 2-3 seed against a 6-7 seed which probably would have been easier.
They only need a new goalie, new defence, new coach, new manager, new owner, new forwards, new assistant coach, new lockerroom staff, new zamboni driver, new ads on the billboards and THEN we will have our dream team.

They just don't have that balance. The team is fine for the regular season and the high flying offence. However, in a 7 game series, they don't have the balance to get it done. They could definitely trade some of that offense for better defense and a bit more grit up front.

As a Blackhawks fan for over 50 years, born in 1962 I thought the Hawks would never win a cup. Watching them win the three cups from 2010-2015, it was clear only depth and defense can win cups. Time after time it was the Bolland's and the Versteeg's that gave the stars a chance to shine. Kane would not be Showtime if many others did not pave the way. Most times, a team cannot control how many goals they score. It is so important to be able to play a defensive game when needed. Defense is something with hard work even with lower skilled players can be a big factor. Many times, the Hawks could put any line out there against any line. In fact, the 4th line was used as a shutdown line against the best others had to offer. As soon as the Hawks became top-heavy paying their stars, they never won a playoff round again. It is not that the Leafs stars are not showing up. It is they are letting the Boston stars beat them.

I have no faith in the Leafs, they do not have a team capable of beating Boston...reasons why: Keefe - for the last 10 minutes of the 2nd period the team was doing the same thing, trying to skate into the zone with control of the puck...Boston had a defensive system where they could not do that effectively...anyone with a brain could see that but the Leafs kept doing the same thing...solution = try something new, also when in the zone with the puck, have someone block Swayman and then take a shot...instead the plan was pass, pass, pass, pass,...but unfortunately they would cough up the puck and then it would go the other way...sure the system worked against Montreal, and Chicago, and Ottawa but it has not worked against Boston so doing something different would be prudent...I blame Keefe for not adjusting, Leafs need to fire him (not sure who to replace him with)...other Leafs that need to go (on defense): Liljegren (just horrible and should not be on an NHL team), McCabe (I like he that he is tough but he pinches too much and gets burnt on it, not to mention dumb penalties at times...on offense it is a shame we have Nylander and Tavares on long term no trade clause contracts as it limits what we can do..IMO you need a different strategy to our offense as the current offense I look at as being good, just we need a different strategy with Boston, and Keefe has yet to figure that out...
Toronto is fast approaching 60 years since their last championship. Like, how is that even possible for such a proud hockey franchise??? At this point, with the amount of talent on this team with effectively zero results that matter, if they fall to Boston, be it in 5, 6, or 7, they need to drop a nuke on the team. Players, coaches, GM, they all need to go. You’ve had arguably the most talented team for what, nearly a decade and all you have to show for it is making it to round 2 a single time? At some point beating your head against a brick wall will leave you unconscious, and the Leafs are one hit away from blacking out.

Like the wings in the early 90s. Offensively loaded but when playoffs came they just didn’t have the grit. That changes when the team focused on Defence first, and just being aggressive. The offence will come if your talented regardless, the other part though is a want, a mentality shift, and a whole team commitment

It's a major reason they actually looked good in game 2; they supported the puck and had coordinated break outs. It also doesnt help when 3 of the 4 highest paid guys ONLY use their sticks to battle for the puck.
I was actually in a hockey tournament in Boston Massachusetts and on the day of this game, I was in a restaurant/bar type place with my coaches family checking out Boston and what not and we were the only Canadians in a sea of bruin fans I felt so out of place lmao 🤣.

We've seen this time and time again with this core. Their star players just don't show up in the playoffs. Now it goes without saying that Hockey is a team sport and you need depth to go deep in the playoffs but you need you're star players to perform. Contrast that with the Oilers who are a very similar style of team: Mcdavid 9 pts, Draisaitl 7 pts, and Hyman 7pts. All three of them have more points individually than Marner, Mathews, and Tavares combined. Even Evan Bouchard has only 1 less point than them combined. Granted the LA Kings are not the same caliber of team as the Boston Bruins but it still shows how the Oilers stars are dominating play in a way the Leafs just aren't. If the core 4 ever want to get close to a cup in Toronto then they need to figure out how show up like Mcdavid, Draisaitl, Hyman, Mackinnon, Kucherov, etc.

Tavares is 34 y.o. He mentally and physically checked out _at least_ four years ago. The last time he played well was when he was with the NY Islanders.
Not to mention their 4v3 PP was absolutely disgusting to watch (as a Bruins fan, I kind of wanted them to score to keep me on my toes a bit). When there's a Toronto powerplay, I am not even in the slightest concerned that they'll score. I used to get nervous back when Subban would even get the puck way back when, powerplay or full strength, I should feel that same way when the bruins get a penalty, especially a 4v3.
What hurts the most is that Boston is really not that good. They will be swept in the next round. Thats how bad we really are. Watch the other series and you’ll see that neither of these teams are going anywhere this year.

They just don't have that balance. The team is fine for the regular season and the high flying offence. However, in a 7 game series, they don't have the balance to get it done. They could definitely trade some of that offense for better defense and a bit more grit up front.

As a Blackhawks fan for over 50 years, born in 1962 I thought the Hawks would never win a cup. Watching them win the three cups from 2010-2015, it was clear only depth and defense can win cups. Time after time it was the Bolland's and the Versteeg's that gave the stars a chance to shine. Kane would not be Showtime if many others did not pave the way. Most times, a team cannot control how many goals they score. It is so important to be able to play a defensive game when needed. Defense is something with hard work even with lower skilled players can be a big factor. Many times, the Hawks could put any line out there against any line. In fact, the 4th line was used as a shutdown line against the best others had to offer. As soon as the Hawks became top-heavy paying their stars, they never won a playoff round again. It is not that the Leafs stars are not showing up. It is they are letting the Boston stars beat them.

I have no faith in the Leafs, they do not have a team capable of beating Boston...reasons why: Keefe - for the last 10 minutes of the 2nd period the team was doing the same thing, trying to skate into the zone with control of the puck...Boston had a defensive system where they could not do that effectively...anyone with a brain could see that but the Leafs kept doing the same thing...solution = try something new, also when in the zone with the puck, have someone block Swayman and then take a shot...instead the plan was pass, pass, pass, pass,...but unfortunately they would cough up the puck and then it would go the other way...sure the system worked against Montreal, and Chicago, and Ottawa but it has not worked against Boston so doing something different would be prudent...I blame Keefe for not adjusting, Leafs need to fire him (not sure who to replace him with)...other Leafs that need to go (on defense): Liljegren (just horrible and should not be on an NHL team), McCabe (I like he that he is tough but he pinches too much and gets burnt on it, not to mention dumb penalties at times...on offense it is a shame we have Nylander and Tavares on long term no trade clause contracts as it limits what we can do..IMO you need a different strategy to our offense as the current offense I look at as being good, just we need a different strategy with Boston, and Keefe has yet to figure that out...
Toronto is fast approaching 60 years since their last championship. Like, how is that even possible for such a proud hockey franchise??? They'd almost be better off folding the team and having the NHL give them an expansion franchise. Hell, expansion teams that didn't exist before 1992 have won 5 of the last 20 Cups. Just pathetic for them to be so inept.

John Tavares (the Leafs one's uncle) won the 2023 NLL championship coaching the Buffalo Bandits (they're looking to repeat as we speak), then another in the summer coaching the Six Nations Chiefs. @darrylsmart1 just uploaded a documentary of the latter with locker room footage and everything, it's awesome. The Leafs need to bring the elder JT into the locker room to give these guys an idea of what it takes to win in the playoffs from a guy who has won what? 9 Mann Cups and 6 Champions Cups? Because they don't have it...
You can't coach heart. Matthews was disappointed at the end of the year that he didn't get that 70th. He doesn't get paid for playoff games, and it shows.
At this point, with the amount of talent on this team with effectively zero results that matter, if they fall to Boston, be it in 5, 6, or 7, they need to drop a nuke on the team. Players, coaches, GM, they all need to go. You’ve had arguably the most talented team for what, nearly a decade and all you have to show for it is making it to round 2 a single time? At some point beating your head against a brick wall will leave you unconscious, and the Leafs are one hit away from blacking out.

Like the wings in the early 90s. Offensively loaded but when playoffs came they just didn’t have the grit. That changes when the team focused on Defence first, and just being aggressive. The offence will come if your talented regardless, the other part though is a want, a mentality shift, and a whole team commitment

One of the problems is that they don't support each other along the boards.. like the games first goal.
So much this; they hang each other out to dry and think because the puck is not near them that its not their problem. It's a major reason they actually looked good in game 2; they supported the puck and had coordinated break outs.
It also doesnt help when 3 of the 4 highest paid guys ONLY use their sticks to battle for the puck.

I was actually in a hockey tournament in Boston Massachusetts and on the day of this game, I was in a restaurant/bar type place with my coaches family checking out Boston and what not and we were the only Canadians in a sea of bruin fans I felt so out of place lmao 🤣.

We've seen this time and time again with this core. Their star players just don't show up in the playoffs. Now it goes without saying that Hockey is a team sport and you need depth to go deep in the playoffs but you need you're star players to perform. Contrast that with the Oilers who are a very similar style of team: Mcdavid 9 pts, Draisaitl 7 pts, and Hyman 7pts. All three of them have more points individually than Marner, Mathews, and Tavares combined. Even Evan Bouchard has only 1 less point than them combined. Granted the LA Kings are not the same caliber of team as the Boston Bruins but it still shows how the Oilers stars are dominating play in a way the Leafs just aren't. If the core 4 ever want to get close to a cup in Toronto then they need to figure out how show up like Mcdavid, Draisaitl, Hyman, Mackinnon, Kucherov, etc.
Best goalscorer in regular season against teams that want to lose is easy. Matthews is the biggest ghost in playoffs when it matters

Not to mention their 4v3 PP was absolutely disgusting to watch (as a Bruins fan, I kind of wanted them to score to keep me on my toes a bit). When there's a Toronto powerplay, I am not even in the slightest concerned that they'll score. I used to get nervous back when Subban would even get the puck way back when, powerplay or full strength, I should feel that same way when the bruins get a penalty, especially a 4v3.
What hurts the most is that Boston is really not that good. They will be swept in the next round. Thats how bad we really are. Watch the other series and you’ll see that neither of these teams are going anywhere this year.
