    I think that they decided to prioritize scale in the vehicle mode because there's much better reference material between the actual vehicles, and his vehicle mode scales really well with the rest of the line. I think Ultra Magnus's robot mode is just too small in the show to make a figure that scales properly in both modes, I mean he's Optimus's truck cab with a giant trailer attached, it only makes sense that he's twice the height of Optimus

    I'm a scale addict (as everyone should be). It was the reason why I didn't bought it. I cant stand he not being on scale with Cyclonus, Galvatron and Grimlock. Kingdom Ultra Magnus is perfection in that regard.

    • @Jason49110
      @Jason49110 Месяц назад

      I personally think his scale is perfectly fine. I don't mind scale to an extent. Like Megatron should be taller than Optimus, Bee should be shorter, etc. I know that Ultra Magnus is supposed to be this big, bulky bot, and not someone like Hot Rod or Springer. I know Magnus should be taller than Optimus and the 86 figure succeeds at that. In fact, not counting Combiners and Titans, Magnus should be the tallest Autobot I think. But this is all just my opinion, you're free to have your own if you wish

  • @franzise3605
    @franzise3605 Месяц назад +25

    Repeating things others have already said at this point but it was to prioritize the alt mode. Yes, mass-shifting is always a thing (Astrotrain can hold Devastator inside him in shuttle mode but during the coronation he's about as tall as Starscream, Galvatron flies in on Cyclonus, etc.) so generally the robot mode is prioritized for scale, but Ultra Magnus is a unique case where his alt mode is specifically designed to interact with other Transformers; he's a car carrier so he SHOULD be able to carry cars. Making an Astrotrain that can carry Devastator just isn't happening and Cyclonus functions perfectly fine as a jet without being able to fit Galvatron in the cockpit, but Magnus having a trailer too small to hold any cars effectively makes his alt mode useless.
    Besides, I feel like the scale isn't THAT off - Magnus is supposed to be a little shorter than the Dinobots but the SS86 toy is a little taller, not that egregious, and honestly considering how big his car carrier mode is, it's impressive the designers were able to compact him down as much as they did.

    For years TF fans have complained whenever a Magnus came out who was unable to carry deluxe cars in vehicle mode. There was no way to do scale in both robot and vehicle mode, but they opted to please the critics rather than be consistent. Same thing determined the size of the HasLab Omega Prime.

  • @anotherLword
    @anotherLword Месяц назад +2

    Some have mentioned the car carrying aspect. I think another element to consider is that the cab of the alt mode has been scaled to be near the exact size as the upcoming 86 Commander Optimus' cab which, on his own, needs to stand somewhere between Voyager/Leader (maybe Kingdom Rodimus' height)

    I think it’s because of the engineering looking back a siege/kingdom ultra magus they utilized the inner robot concept and basically started with a voyager with added parts to bump him up to a leader size here they essentially wanted to keep the trailer and truck cab together bypassing the need for parts forming. I think it was easier for them to get that concept through a large size kinda how they explained how Frankenstein’s monster was so tall in Mel Brooks Young Frankenstein movie essentially to make easier to bring the monster to life and accommodate the complexity of to make it of a larger stature(the musical better explains it) so to achieve the complexity of bypassing the whole inner robot concept they made him bigger to accommodate his transformation

    Of all of the things to critique about Transformers toys this is surely the bottom of the list. Magnus needed to be big as the vehicle mode is to scale with the other vehicles and it was chosen to be released at Commander class, again because of the vehicle size. The previous Commander class release was Motormaster and Magnus has to be bigger than him, which seems to be the size you want Magnus to be. Magnus also needs to be bigger than Optimus's vehicle mode as he can carry 4-5 deluxe class vehicles rather than just Roller and Bumblebee.

    @billmcquown4168 Месяц назад

    The issue lies with the animators' choice to negate the real scale based on the Diaclone toys, which all scaled fairly well together. Had they animated all the bot modes to correspond with how they scale practically, this conversation would be unnecessary. Of course, the choice to integrate Micro-change toys into the line created a much greater scale issue which we've come to call mass-shifting. Had they chosen instead to keep everything to its real scale (Imagine Megs and Soundwave as tiny bots throughout the toon- hard to do now thanks to the Sunbow animation and every bit of media since), but it would have been a far different experience had they gone that route. Regarding SS86 Magnus, I think he's nigh perfect, one of the best toy incarnations of the character thus far. Since his truck mode is scaled to match Earthrise Prime, whose truck mode is a bit undersized compared to the carbots in order to make his bot mode scale better, I think he's scaled appropriately in order to give us a functional car carrier mode like the original toy. Since scale is all over the place in Transformers (let's consider Skyfire for a moment, whose already big bot mode benefits from a ridiculous amount of mass-shifting to become a ship into which the bots, including Prime, can all fit comfortably). End of the day, I don't blame the toys, I blame the animation for the disparity in sizes. It all could have been much different if the choice had been made from the start to keep everything in scale relative to the toys, but that's not what happened and now we have that conundrum of what scale is proper.

    Haven't got him yet. Didn't realize there was such a big size difference. A major problem though is, like you said, that the characters also shift in size in the cartoon, so there's that problem and that can't easily be fixed...if at all. He's...commander class now? But really should be leader class, on par with Galvatron. That would have been more reasonable size. Then again, they hade to make him big enough to actually carry other cars/robots on his trailer, but I think they could have done it anyway even if they hade shortened him a bit. I think the main reason they made him so big was that the engineering was fairly advanced and even though they have made smaller leader class these days and justified the cost with either accessories or advanced engineering, they probably felt it was too difficult to adjust the commander class price unless they also made him quite big. But I agree, he's too big now and even though I really like him, I might buy a third party Magnus instead to fit him better with the other robot sizes. He's just not that big. Then again, IDW showed Fortress Maximus to be something like leader class and there's no way the absolutely giant Fortress Maximus was that size, so...other problems. Guess they will never be able to handle it properly.

    One thing that is a probability? They make way too many of them reference one singular scene from a movie or episode, just so you can recreate it with the toys. You either end up with a vehicle mode that's too small or a robot that's too big. Personally, I would prefer the vehicle modes to scale better than the robot modes, unless it is Character that is supposed to be gigantic, like Astrotrain or the Titans.

    I believe Studio Series were said to be scaled by vehicle form as there’s more uniform scales for cars and as there’s so much mass shifting for Transformers that if they went purely by Robot mode scale then the resulting vehicle modes would be all over the place in terms of scale, so a more uniform scale is more desirable

    All Ultra Magnus have the same problem. He's supposed to be slightly bigger than Springer. About a similar size to Galvatron. BUT he's also got an Optimus inside him, surrounded by armor, even though they are supposed to be the same size.

    I personally dont care too much about scale especially with as great of a figure as it is. it's the best commander we've ever seen IMO, he does so many good things and calling him "too big" is honestly hysterical to me because people always complain about, "oh the commanders are never big enough for $90, cuz Skyfire was big and he cost $80." Then when people get the commander in hand they are like BEST OF YEAR!!! Now me seeing this, it's truly pathetic that this is where the TF community is. I understand where you're coming from, but to bring down the BEST official Magnus we've ever seen is a crime and is such a sad nitpick that he doesn't match the model of G1. It wasn't even accurate to itself. I myself think that magnus is supposed to be this big, hulking character who turns into this big car carrier as a general leading his troops in while carrying them into battle. Honestly a genius video idea bc people are gonna make comments like this and only boost the algo, so props to you for that. Also ill give my respect to you for coming out with a ballsy opinion. I've done the same and gotten flamed but the algo loved it! Either way, keep making good content, and this is just the way i think of it

  • @jamesdlin7
    @jamesdlin7 Месяц назад

    Hasbro/Takara prioritized the alt-mode scale in this case because being able to carry other Transformers was a play feature of the original toy. People expect that. If they made the opposite choice, people would still complain. I reckon that significantly more people would complain about the car carrier mode not being able to carry cars than people would complain about the robot mode being a bit too big, which IMO isn't super noticeable since Ultra Magnus is supposed to be big in his robot mode. (His name is "Ultra Magnus", after all.)

  • @TrueSavage555
    @TrueSavage555 Месяц назад

    I feel like they made him that big to try and justify the commander class price as much as possible without making him super big. Although IMO, he should have been like Grimlock and just been a downscaled Leader Class version of his MP figure without any over complexity. This also would have allowed them to do something brand new with the Commander Class that year.

    There is a few reasons why:
    They wanted the cab section to be the same size as Earthrise Optimus prime’s cab, because that’s how it was for the og toy.
    They wanted to give him good car carrier functionality.
    They wanted him to feel worth the commander class price point, because with their last offerings, Rodimus specifically, people complained he was too small, and rightfully so I believe, as I think he should have at least been taller than Earthrise Optimus or the same height as Galvatron.

  • @stephengray8374

      Yes, I'm very curious to see what they do with SS86 Megatron. I hope they can get him as close to the movie as possible. I suppose there will be an 86 version of Galvatron too at some point.
      I only have the Siege Megatron. This is quite big, but Kingdom Galvatron absolutely dwarfs him. This may be accurate in terms of the War For Cybertron cartoon, though, I'm not sure.

    I agree. But for his engineering I can see why. This one's not a "Prime" in armor. It may have taken too much engineering to be both capable of hauling 4 deluxes why turning into a robot a little smaller than Grimlock or the same size as Galvatron.. I still want it (for the transformation and carrier alone) but if I just dead set on 'scale(🤣) I'd go after Earthrise one or just be happy with my Siege.
