- I am replacing my factory head unit in my 2003 Ford Expedition in this video. The install instructions could cover all 2003-2006 Ford Expeditions. I purchased my Kenwood DDX593 Excelon head unit from Crutchfield. They provided excellent phone support for my questions. Additionally, they sent me detailed instructions for wiring and disassembly of my SUV.
UPDATE - I had bluetooth and USB connection problems with my phones. I got them worked out but the one thing that sealed the deal on returning it is visibility. I was driving at 6:30pm and the screen was so washed out from the sun you couldn't see anything. I may re-upload this video with the photo I took of the screen. The replacement will be a Pioneer 3800BHS. I hope it works better. Хобби
Thanks for posting this video. Thumbs up to all the die hard Ford truck enthusiasts out there. I have a 2000 Expy with 234K miles on it and is still running strong with far fewer problems than I would've expected for a vehicle with this many miles on it. Nevertheless, we decided to upgrade a little and bought and 03 Eddie Bauer (144K) over the weekend. I was very disappointed to learn the Navigation system requires expensive CDs to function and the phone button did absolutely nothing when I tried to do a bluetooth sync. I have been looking at installing the Kenwood but was too intimidated by all the detailed wiring. Your video gave me the hope I needed to move forward with installing the unit myself rather than paying through the nose to have someone else do it. Great job and thanks again.
Thank you for this. We are doing this same thing ! Our 6 disc just gobbled up some cds. It's time. Thanks
if you just ground out the green "brake" wire then you can bypass the need to have the brake depressed for some of the features.
Never even thought of that.....2yrs later but thanks
Great video, thanks for sharing
the Sub wire is that the same wire for those cars with rear DVD units?
What did the plug you left loose go to?
Wow your interior is in good shape.
Thanks I try to keep it nice. I plan on driving this car until the wheels fall off.
My 2003 XLT has 211,000 miles on it and the wheels are still securely attached. She still purrs like a kitten too.
I just put new Monroe Quick Struts on it. I hope mine goes to 211k. I am at 120k right now. ruclips.net/video/y7f0nsWtmbA/видео.html
My 2006 XLT is all original and it has 274,000 miles. I bought it brand new and it still looks that way inside and out. I too plan on driving it until the wheels fall off. I've been thinking about upgrading the radio for Bluetooth and touchscreen. Great video I didn't know it was that easy to install. Thanks!
Did you need antenna adapter to make radio work?
Can you provide a link to the wiring harness you used for this install? I have a 2003 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer with subwoofer and DVD.
What kind radio hook up and what year? I'm trying find the sub woofer hook up for my.
Where did you get the wire harness
You must a the expy EB coz my 03s interior looks different mostly the aricon controls.
What is the part # for that wiring harness ? Great video
i just bought a new radio for my 03 expy - just a plain jane one with a spot to shove usb keys in, not fancy like your's. great vid - i've taken my entire truck apart trying to find a gremlin that made the auto lights not work, the radio wouldn't shut off when you got out of the car, auto locks didn't work etc... replaced almost every sensor in the thing then finally found a break in the purple wire under the drivers side step... also, i had to take the ignition cylinder out and clean it one time - little pieces of key get in there and one time it just wouldn't turn... now i lube it with dry lube every couple months - newer models have a hole under that you can stick a screwdriver in and release it, so obviously it's a known problem... not difficult, just a pain... but i have to ask, is your truck ALWAYS that clean? i have two slobbering dogs and a dirt road to get home and that pretty much means any cleaning job is only a few hours worth of enjoyment.
If I want use an aftermarket amp and subwoofer do I hook up that RCA jack to the amp? I'm confused on that part. Can't find any videos or forum that explains it.
Yeah you would hook up to the rca jack and then you would have to wire the amp to your battery.
Whats the part number for the harness u used to keep the factory subwoofer working?
I don't know Crutchfield figured it out when I called them.
Thanks for checking out my videos. I have taken you feedback
The 3 connectors are all used, they don’t just go obsolete. 1 is for normal radio function and amp activation, another is used for rear radio controls, and another is used for the DVD player.
On an aftermarket radio that doesn't have a disc drive the 3rd most definitely is obsolete if there is no longer a use for cds
Did you have this hooked up to an over head dvd player?
If I may ask, What does the "light green brake wire" do ??
Wiring it the way he did means that the parking brake has to be pressed in order to be able to watch a dvd..I think. I've seen other videos where people just ground that wire out so that the vehicle can still be allowed to move whenever a dvd is being played.....someone correct me if I'm wrong.
10:08 My 2004 Expedition doesn’t have that little compartment. I wish I had your center console, it’s more fancy
Where did you get the wiring harness to connect to the car ? Been to all auto parts stores and Walmart can’t find any
Crutchfield
Did you loose your DVD player and steering wheel controls? Been contemplating upgrading to a unit with blue tooth, but not sure f it's worth loosing all the other features.
I did not have a dvd player with my SUV. There are wiring kits you can buy to keep your steering wheel controls. In my case I skipped it because the abilities I had to control the radio with the steering wheel was limited to volume and changing channels. Not worth the added expense of a wiring kit. Not to mention the radio I selected came with a remote.
The brake green wire that's for video¿¿
Nice fit
I had crutchfield assemble mine for an extra $25.
I have the 505BT version in my 2006 expedition xlt.
Wished you lived close if was into stereo and accessory installation lol.
What wiring kit did you use?
I don't know the name of the kit. Crutchfield sent it with my radio based on my year suv.
Were you able to use your steering wheel radio controls?
No but if you purchased an extra module you could. I didn't see the need.
I know this is a old video but my question is what did you do for the controls on the steering wheel controls for the stereo? I want to replace my stock stereo out but I want to make sure I get full control from my steering wheel.
There is an adapter to make them work. I didn't install it so my controls on the wheel for the radio no longer worked.
@@myriadcorp do you know what the adapter is? Also what about the DVD player in the back?
@@travruhl I didn't have a DVD player. I got my stuff from Crutchfield. If you call them they can tell you all the parts you need for the job.
Idk if you figured it out but it’s called a radio replacement interface. SWRFD-60L works for models from 2003-2012. You can get them from crutchfield.
@@miracleinsider link ?
where sis you get the wiring kit cant find
It came with the radio from Crutchfield. You just have to tell them the make and model of your car.
how it went with the steering wheel control s
I didn't waste the money on the steering wheel control adapter. It would have cost a ton only to gain volume and forward/backward. The radio has a remote. I use that if I don't want to touch the head unit. I wouldn't recommend spending the money to get the steering wheel controls.
I cant get my 02 eddie bauer to play no music ive had it for year . Everybody I have tooking it to act like they know how to get it to work.. please help
There’s a fuse box on the right passenger side. If a fuse is blown, the radio won’t work. Replace the fuse for the radio. They’re like $6. You can go to a Ford dealership and ask for the fuse box schematics if you don’t have the manual anymore and that will tell you where the proper fuse is located for the radio. You can buy the piece from AutoZone.
What's that knob below the air vent? My EB does not have that
Changes from 2 Wheel drive to 4 wheel drive.
myriadcorp is yours a 5.6 triton?
Thought it was a 5.4 maybe it's .6 I have to look. It's a 2003 Eddie Bauer.
myriadcorp mines an 03 as well. Anyways your interior is top notch.lol
I wonder if it was a pain in the ass installing?
Is this the setup for a 2005 expedition Eddie bauer
2003 but 2005 should be the same.
@@myriadcorp ok thanks
What size is the stereo?
2 Din
The screen, is it a 7" or 6.3?
I swapped it out for a Pioneer AVH-X3800BHS. The Kenwood screen was hard to see. It's screen is 6.9 inches.
my light for my ashtray came unplugged can not tell where it plugged in at the wire harness do you remember where it was plugged in at
Sorry I don't recall where that plugs in.
Hello, how do u disable the screen saver? ads looking like thingy if u haven't touched ur screen???
I think you are talking about demo mode. You change that in the settings.
great, thank you
Great video. Did you retain steering wheel controls?
very nice bro there's any way you can send me an email explaining how to connect the subwoofer to the connection or at least a little graphic because I have 05 Ford Expedition and my goal is to connect the DVD player from the truck and the subwoofer
Did you connect your DVD and the subwoofer?
nothing for nothing……..I USED ORIGINAL BRACKET Off original radio…there’s holes on most radios that align with orig bracket.
The idea behind a how to video is to show the work. Like when you took a math test in sixth grade. This video doesn't show the work. F-
I thought I was the only one that thought it was pretty bs
Screw this, I am going to the professionals. I put many a car stereo in my day but this one takes the cake. Thanks though
Are you putting it into a 2003 Ford Expedition? If yes it's really easy if you have the correct brackets and plugs. So I actually changed out the Kenwood to a Pioneer for the viability. Now the Pioneer is starting to have amp issues. I may have to buy another radio. These things are not made to last.
Wire nuts? Are you driving a house? Blue butt connectors made for 14 AWG wire on 20 AWG wires? Hack.
It worked. I'm not a stereo installer. Those butt connectors were the smallest ones I could find at my local store.
