  • This is a video tutorial explaining how to replace the stock radio in a F150 from the years of 2004-2008. The radio used is a double din unit if you are using a single din unit it is the same except for the fit kit will be different. This guide is good for showing replacing a stock unit with an after market unit or an other stock unit you just don't need to solder anything in that case.
    Wiring Harness: amzn.to/2hzFsOt
    Double Din Kit: amzn.to/2zsxCAJ
    XAV-AX5000(Updated Unit): amzn.to/3iSaIXp

    I spliced a usb cord and connected the red wire in the cord to the sub wires and then plugged that into the back USB port so when the unit powers up the usb port sends the 5 volt signal to the amp. Cheap fix..

    As a tech in the communication field an old phone tech taught me to put the solder iron under the copper and your fresh solder pressed on the top. Once the copper has reached the solders melting point it’ll just seep right in perfect solder every time 😍

    The “dimmer” and “illumination” wires are not a difference in linguistics. Their purpose is to give power to the actual lighting of the head unit. The “dimmer” does exactly what the name hints to. It draws anywhere between 0V to 12V. It probably has a dimming setting you could change in the menu, depending on your preference. The “illumination” wire draws either 0V or 12V (On or Off). It doesn’t allow you to adjust the amount of light. Just in case anybody was curious.
    Overall great video! Thanks for the help!

      To clarify, older vehicles typically only lit the buttons when the headlights were on helping you see them at night. That wire is marked illumination. Newer head units dim and go into night mode so the screen doesn't blind you at night, this is marked dimmer. Seeing as illumination is powered when the headlights are on, connecting it to dimmer will dim your screen at night.
      So yes, you want to connect these wires.

      It’s generally going to be okay, but the way professionals do it, and the way 50+ years of human learning about electrical connections go, the best possible interconnect for stranded wire is going to be a crimp style splice with a heat shrink moisture seal. If the wire is solid, it is better to solder with a heat shrink moisture seal. This is straight from IPC technical guidelines.

    Just my 10¢ for soldering vs. connectors. Soldering is a mechanical connection, not electrical; solder even increases resistance. Manufacturers use double wall adhesive lined heat shrink as electrical tape slides off from the heat. Seen it happen more than once.
    When used with proper crimpers, crimp connectors make excellent connections. Ever notice all the pins in the OEM connector housings are crimped? My favorite is heat shrink crimp splices and connectors. The crimp makes a good electrical connection and the heat shrink provides strain relief and environmental protection. In 20 years as a marine electrician, I have yet to see one fail. Use the red (22-18 AWG) splice for this application, crimp with good crimpers, the hit with a heat gun. Almost as clean as solder, but electrically and mechanically sound.

      @gregthoms5232 2 года назад

      40 years working on cars. I agree with you on heat shrink but soldering these connections works just fine and really does not increase resistance appreciably. Even my battery connectors are soldered.

    Dear people. The objective of this video has fascinated me. Why? I will tell You a story. Back years let's say 8-10, I have purchased a 2004 F150 Lariat, white with gold flares and bumpers, on tan leather. It was dirty, it was dusty, it had both exhaust manifold leak, it had one side step bar missing, it had one fog light broken. BUT, it had a stereo that said "SHAKER 1000" on it. Back then I did not know what that actually ment, but I knew that, that stereo is the absolute best stereo that my ears have ever heard, but there is more than just hearing, it was a stereo that You could feel. It was an experience that NO OTHER CAR PROVIDES. So I sold the truck. People who bought it, were the happiest people on Earth that day. And I did not know why at that time. As years went by, I wanted a Lariat. White one, nice one, with that stereo.....So Lord sent me a lead. 2008 Lariat, white, chromed all around, tan leather. it was the most gorgeous looking F150 that I have seen in my life. Bought it.......got in it.........touch screen.....crap, have to hit screen 10 times to get it to work, sounds like 1987 Hyundai accent, no sub, no feelings, no emotions.........sold it. zero regrets. 3 days ago.........2004 Lariat, white with gold on tan, no shaker 1000 BUT sub under the rear seat. This truck........I do not want to insult it, by calling it a truck, it is so much more. When you listen to music, it is like hearing for the first time, and not just hearing it, but feeling it. So the moral of this long post is, whatever stereo this chap put it, did not make it better I can not imagine. Stock Ford(SHAKER, PIONEER, AUDIOPHILE) stereo systems, have a soul. And only other cars that I can think of that have a soul are 2007 style MB C-Class, BMW E39, BMW E46, BMW E36. And MAYBE I could throw 2010ish Charger

      @WmTRiker 5 лет назад

      @@alexcr4387 I apologize for not looking closely at the wiring diagram. I saw speaker connections on this plug and thought they went to the REC. They don't. They go to (or, actually, _come from_ ) an Audio Input Jack, if you've got it (which would not be functional if this connector is not used). It is my understanding that this jack was not installed until 2007 (which would explain why my 2006 does not have it...). It looks like the REC would still work, but would not be able to communicate with the head unit via the databus as these wires also go through this "B" connector. Since my truck does not have the REC, I don't know for certain exactly what information is communicated between the head unit and the REC via the databus.
      FYI, If you have the REC, the front speakers are connected directly to the head unit via the main ("A") connector, and the rear speakers are connected to the head unit through the REC (disconnecting the connector from the REC would disconnect the rear speakers).

    The connectors are by far better and easier, if you are worried about connection they even make connectors that have solder all the way around the middle of the connector put the wires in overlapping crimp the side then hit it with a torch to melt the solder and shrink the heat shrink tubing on the connector and solder cools very quickly because it’s so small it’s touchable seconds after soldering it may be hot still but unless you grab it and hold on I don’t think you’ll be burning yourself.

    Do you have to install the microphone? Im not sure if my head unit even comes with one, but it seems kind of complicated and I was wondering if its completely necessary

    • @2carpros
      @2carpros  6 лет назад

      Not at all! Some head units have a mic built in to the face of it and some don't have one at all. If yours doesn't have a mic on the face and it came with a mic you may need to install it for voice function to work. If you don't care about voice function then you don't need it. Thank you so much for watching!

    I just installed a Pioneer DMH1500nex head unit in a 2006 F150. (no subwoofer) You spent a lot of time on the wiring and soldering and (in my opinion) left out or glossed over a few really important things. First, you do have to cut off the rear tabs of the side panels of the Metra face kit. It says to in the instructions but it is not clear what is meant. I could see you had done that in the video, but you never said why. (unless I missed it) The more you cut off the easier it is to install the head unit. Second, you may or may not need the spacers. In my case, the spacers made it impossible to replace the center trim panel after installation. Regardless of what the instructions say try it without the spacers first. Third, the 4 screws that come with the Metra kit to attach the unit to the vehicle are longer than the screws with the stock unit to accommodate the spacers. However, the collar on the head of the screw is small. Since the Metra face kit is plastic if you tighten too hard the head of the screw will drive into the plastic and you will never get it out. This happened to me but Crutchfield sent me a new Metra kit. I recommend using a washer on the screw. (And Metra should change this screw design) Finally, the unit has to be centered when mounted. Otherwise, the trim panel will not go back in. Nobody wants a head unit that rattles so the temptation is to really tighten those mounting screws. Just don't tighten them too hard.

    I just installed a Pioneer AVH 1400NEX in my 2005 F-150. I followed all the instructions in the video but I'm not getting any audio. Also, the volume is going up by itself until I unplug the ASWC-1, then it stops. And, after sitting for a couple minutes trying to figure things out an "Amp Error" message pops up on the screen. What have I done???
