I really believe they have a chance and I hope they're all happy. On the otherside, wow this is rare. I'm so used to people either minimizing, rationalizing, or flat out denying the dog's behavior and that they contributed to the problem. Additionally, fighting Victoria every step of the way with training. This family was like "Yup. We effed up. Help, please ." Such a wholesome episode!

    Never, EVER, leave a child and an animal alone together. Sooner or later something unexpected will happen. That will confuse the animal, and when animals don't know what to do, they fall back on instinct. For a horse, instinct means 'run away', so somebody gets trampled. For a dog, instinct means 'bite', so somebody gets ripped up. Animals can be great with children, but there should always be an adult nearby to tell the animal what to do.

    • @ajvanmarle
      @ajvanmarle 3 года назад +78

      @@Emily-oy2nq That depends on the situation and the kind of dog. On top of that, children may not recognize when the dog is giving a warning a push just a bit harder. It doesn't happen often. In fact, it almost never happens. But when it does, you're looking at a dead or maimed child and a dog that has to be put down.

    "Who's gonna want an aggressive dog?" I specifically looked for an aggressive dog that was on death row. He was considered too aggressive to be around dogs, cats or children. After considerable training he is now FANTASTIC around cats AND kittens. He is now pretty good about kids and knows the 'easy' command very well from tje cats and kittens. But dogs are a whole new ball game and ive barely made any headway.

    • @crosita1
      @crosita1 3 года назад +34

      That's one reason why a doll beforehand is so helpful. It's way easier to get used to a doll that does not move or make noise than a real baby. So when the real baby comes and starts making noise, the dog already has a start on things without it being all at once. Getting used to the way the humans act and move around a baby is plenty to start with.
      Most of the time, the noise isn't a big deal. But if you know your dog is noise-sensitive, it's definitely worth doing some desensitization and counterconditioning work with recorded newborn crying also. Don't combine the doll with the noise until the dog doesn't seem stressed by the noise. You want to make each progressive training step as small and easy as possible. For most dogs, who don't have sound issues, it's the way the parents act and the movements of kids that's the hardest part. Luckily babies move more with time so it's much easier for the dog to naturally get used to baby motions at a similar speed as the baby develops. One really rough time is when toddlers start crawling and walking. They figure it out relatively suddenly and seem much more scary to pets when the baby can approach the pet themself. Using barriers and doing a lot of rewarding for baby approaches to teach the dog that baby means good things, even if you are holding the baby and approaching together, is really helpful.
      Dolls won't teach everything, but they are a wonderful starting point.

    • @jilliebeen1
      @jilliebeen1 3 года назад +4

      This training was useless tbh. The dog is under no impression that a doll is a human baby, and he was resource guarding it to boot which is a whole other problem. The dog didn’t destroy a toy, and sat while some kids played. I guess the training got edited out because idk what this was supposed to be.

      @ShinySylviee 3 года назад +36

      @@zerozeroeszeroed maybe not, but she definitely prioritized the dog over the actual baby. The safest, most responsible option would be to rehome the dog (which isn't impossible like she falsely claimed) rather than training the dog to tolerate the existence of a child. The couple even straight up said they don't know if they'll have to time to keep training the dog and Victoria just said "make time" as if taking care of a child isn't time consuming enough. The animal lover side of her took over and completely ignored everything else. This time, luckily, it ended well. The family was successful and no incidents have occurred, but I've seen plenty of instances where dogs that tolerate children nip, bite, and straight up maul.

      ShinySylvie You have made a good point. I still don't think that Victoria is a bad dog trainer, but it could be very dangerous for an aggressive dog to be around a newborn baby. Yep. As someone who had parents that made excuses for an aggressive dog that DID end up mauling my brother, I agree. If you decide to bring a child into the house you should be 100% comfortable with your pets in that you do not believe they would harm the child. (definitely do not leave them unattended though) By making the choice to bring a child into the household, the child HAS to come first. I don't even like children, but I can say that if it is between an aggressive dog and a child, I would have that dog put down in a heartbeat. If you want to donate the time into "fixing" an aggressive dog, that's fine. But don't bring an innocent child into the mix when you KNOW they're gonna get hurt.

    Training a dog whilst you're having a baby, that can be tough. But the earlier you teach them, the more easier it'll become. My Aunt is having a baby in December and she has 2 dogs. Ones small and ones a German Shepard, either way, I'm sure they're both gonna do fine. That well trained dogs and I'm excited to have another girl cousins, as I'm surrounded by boy cousins, so this is a nice change.

    This one gives me a bit of hope. My girl wasn’t raised with kids, she’s a mastiff mix and I’m single. She was doing quite well as a puppy, I’d bring her around parks and let the kids pet her and stuff. There was one family that lived in my apartment building though, they didn’t like dogs. They taught their kids to fear dogs and it just lead to problems. The kid would get behind us in the hall, wait for us to walk a little ways, then run up behind us and stop about 10 feet behind us. He was scared, but didn’t really know why. He looked to be about five. After a few of these encounters, my dog got super scared around kids because that is a stalking technique for hunting animals. That one kid, maybe twice in the hall, and my dog is now terrified of kids. She’s doing a bit better, especially if I find a calm kid that wants to pet her. I still watch her like a hawk, I don’t know what will set her off or what it would take for her to bite someone and I don’t want to find out. Maybe, someday, she’ll get over this fear and we can move on to other training goals.

    • @lacamina
      @lacamina 3 года назад +55

      Probably a combination of production time and pregnancy stuff. You usually shouldn't make a fuss about your pregnancy the first three months because it isn't rare to loose your baby during those months. So they maybe waited until they were sure they would really have baby and then applied for Victoria's visit. Depending on production time, it could have taken Victoria three months to get to them. (Other dogs they wanted/ needed to film before them, or they overall wouldn't start filming before a certain date/ shows like this are usually filmed within a few weeks and not throughout the year.) Also the biting incidents could have happened after the owner getting pregnant. 🤷‍♀️

      It may be tempting to be judgemental about situations like this, but it doesn't help anything. Considering how often dogs get surrendered to shelters or rehomed for how they act around kids, these folks are relatively proactive and deserve support, not shaming. It's actually pretty hard to socialize a dog to kids if you don't have any in your life, especially once you find out the dog may be willing to chomp a kid. Not a ton of parents waiting to go out of their way to bring their kids round for your chompy dog to practice near.
      Being kind about problems like this encourages people to fix the problems. Shame makes the task unnecessarily awful, and will often end with the dog getting rehomed or put down, or not dealing with the problem and ending in injury AND euthanasia. Worth considering next time you see people trying to solve a problem, whether they created it or not. It costs so little to be kind.

    Can definitely say never ever leave a aggressive dog alone with a child. I was not told the dog had a bite history, I was well aware it was an aggressive dog. I made my oldest aware not to go near the dog do not touch it. The dog was not allowed out while we were over visiting. My oldest 2 at the time asked to give the dog a treat in her room all 3 adults in the room said no explained to her why and just went back to talking, within the 2 minutes of broken concentration on her she went into the room left the treat and when she turn the dog torn her leg up. All we heard was one scream the dog in the corner cowering and blood every where. I am so proud of my girl for being able to get through the ordeal and stitches and not be fully afraid of dogs. She gets nervous if they bark but I have been extra diligent on showing her proper ways to great a new dog and how to act around ones that bark instead of screaming and running plus to always ask first and never assume it is a friendly dog. To this day I still feel that is my number one mistake as a parent. If I could go back in time and take the attack instead of her I would do so immediately. Please be aware of your kids and any animal around them. A split second can make all the difference in your life. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ from one mother to another parent have caution and to those that have had this happen, I am with you in the struggle of the guilt and hatred for ones self but you are still loved and a good parent, don’t allow others to hurt you for a mistake you wish never happened.

    • @crosita1

      I am so sorry that happened. As a dog professional, I advise to just never leave small children alone with animals, even when the animals seem safe enough. It's too easy for something unexpected to happen. Kids need to be old enough to have excellent impulse control, read and understand dog body language, and be physically and empathically developed enough to control their movements and prioritize the animal's feelings over their own before it's safe to let them interact without direct supervision. I have seen 4 year olds who could do this, and 12 year olds who couldn't, so it really depends on the kid. And the dog must be bulletproof. It's so easy for one mistake to end in tragedy.

A few weeks later my grandson came to visit and she growled at him....twice. I corrected her both times. She went back to the rescue with a quickness. One never puts a dog above a child. I will say there are rescues that absolutely take on dogs with a bite history. I’ve fostered 2 myself. One was 100% preventable and the pup was a sweetheart-she was just in pain and a child was allowed to jump on her. The other dog was a stray so we don’t know his story but he would bite if you touched him at all (even putting a leash on required scattering treats on the floor and being quick to hook the leash without touching more than some fur). Both dogs were happily adopted into loving families. So it is possible to get these guys adopted with the right rescue.

      Mostly because Bully breeds like pitbulls have one of the strongest jaws in dogs. They are known for bite & not let go. Dogs with narrow jaws usually are the strongest. Usually a dog like that can leave you in a hospital or worst. My parents had an aggressive small dog when I was a baby but his bites barely leave blood. My father gave it to someone who could take care of him.

      So you would be among a huge percentage of the people who leave pets homeless or at shelters good to know. People are supposed to teach kids how to interact and respect boundaries of any living creature which this form of preparation helps prevent attacks. Kids are loud and unpredictable and are more frequently like that if they aren’t taught enough so most animals hate that and I can’t say I blame them I don’t blame the kids though I blame the parents for not educating them.

      @@simplystreeptacular No some dogs with no bite history do not need to be pushed at all they just bite for no reason and some are quite vicious in nature. The idea then that dog with a bite history but rehabilitated is any more of a danger than one without a bite history has no basis in fact. Citing you're profession as a veterinarian nurse to reinforce your opinion isn't going to convince me. You're simply a nurse not a dog behaviour expert. I've come across far too many nurses who think that their experience in one field qualifies them in another.
