Did you ever get around to a remastered review of that red train? So, about those big molded end pieces. Yes, they're very simplistic. But they do serve some valuable purposes. First, cost-reduction - it would take a lot of bricks to replicate the nose shape, driving the price of the set up. Second, space: Replicating that shape with bricks would also leave a lot less room inside, making it substantially more cramped to put the driver minifig and the lights in there. They did do the multicolor thing back in your day. In fact, they probably did it more. It was also a cost thing - primary color parts are hyper-common, so they're cheap. And so Lego loves to use them for hidden stuff. I think a lot of the time those sudden extra-simple steps are to pad the page layout so that it doesn't end up lopsided. The problem you had was that you put the station on the *outside* of the layout even though the instructions _clearly_ show it going on the *inside.*

Always interesting to see what the minds at Lego are coming up with for trains. Not as much a fan of the newer R/C style versus the older track powered sets.
Problem with track power was less building flexibility when it came to the train wheels. It required self-contained preassembled motor+wheel units, and they only ever made a diesel/electric one for the 9V system (to the detriment of steam trains made under that system).
althought the ends of the train are large and are just one peice of plastic, the plastic is very thin and the amount of plastic used is actually quite low.

It was fun, but probably made the track cost more. And the steam trains made under that system all look weird because they never made a steam engine version of the motor unit.
I don't know why the non-powered end car has a pantograph. I also agree it should've came with more straights. If the train was blue instead of white, it could be the Javelin!

+ZeldaTheSwordsman I'm from Germany and see ICEs nearly every week, so I know what they look like. I'm just saying that not every white highspeed train with red stripe is an ICE. Lego even made a train that looked much more like an ICE in 2005. I'm not saying that it's a bad video, because it is not, but I just had to be picky about this.
Highspeedline01 Are you referring to 7897 Passenger Train? Because this looks more like the ICE seen in that photo than that set does. Both have very similar livery, but this one also has the smaller sets of windows below the power car cockpits. This may not have been intended as the ICE specifically (Though given Denmark's proximity, they probably had the ICE in mind with both sets), I'll grant you that. But saying it doesn't look similar is flat-out wrong.

It may not be powered on the model, but it would be powered on the real thing. And would need a pantograph for the return direction.
