  • Welcome to another episode of Mailbox Monday! This series of videos feature items that you have sent in to the channel such as letters, drawings, models and all sorts of other wonderful things.
PLEASE DON'T SEND ANYTHING IN TO THE CHANNEL, FOR THE TIME BEING AS I HAVE A LOT OF MAIL TO PROCESS. But rest assured, I'll be sure to announce when it's okay to send stuff in, once again. And I'll update all Mailbox Monday videos accordingly.
    Thank you!

Regarding the mic, from a video editor, the lapel mic is always gonna give you the best audio in your static position
You always want the external mic as a bare minimum if you don't want to or in a rush to use the lapel mic.
If you record the lapel mic to a separate device, voice recorder or phone, then I would still always plug the external mic to the camera, a) for a back up and b) to mix if desired.
The internal mic is next to useless in comparison, the internal mic is omnidirectional and will pick up every sound, being further away from you it will also highlight the room echo.
The lapel mic is also omnidirectional but coz it's much closer to your mouth you'll get a warmer less echoey sound. Ideally the lapel mic should be 2 to 3 inches away, a good tip is to put your chin down and estimate 2 to 3 inches on your chest, you can even position it under a t-shirt or jumper without it affecting the audio. Physio tape or decent plasters are good if you want to secure it without crocodile clipping the mic to clothing.
The external mic will be directional or known as a shot gun, this is good as it will only (90% ish) pick up audio it is pointing at, so can be afforded to be a little further away whilst leaving head room to bump up audio levels in post without picking out background noise. When you're in front of the camera have the mic facing forward and adjust the camera audio levels so it's bouncing around 6dB. When you're behind the camera attach the mic "backwards" but remember to adjust the camera audio levels accordingly, will save work in post and audio is more consistent adjusting it during production.
Remember it's better to have the audio levels a little low and raise them in post than to have them red lining or clipping as it will still sound crushed/distorted even if you lower them in post.
I'm involved in one project where I got them a mic stand with about a 3 foot boom pole that the external mic can be attached to and I've shown them how to position the mic stand out of shot but the mic is above the subjects head pointing in the direction of their mouth, generally the mic ends up being a foot or two above them and anywhere between a foot and three in front of them depending on space, but dunno how well that setup would work in your situation/space. It does get the warm sound of the shotgun mic whilst being flexible enough to get mic closer than if it was on the camera, I mainly recommended that setup to them because they were filming 2 person interviews and they didn't have any experience with lapel mics or 2 lapel mics and 2 recording devices at the time, so it was simply, quick and easy to set up and produced consistent audio for me to work with.

Hi Will/Intercity82. Try and use Instagram they have this cool feature called Ask a Question which allows you to ask your followers a question within your story. They way it works is that followers on Instagram will be able to reply when viewing your story asking you any questions they want to ask you and to see people respond, swipe up on your story. If you click the question, a new story will pop up with the question for you to add the answer, post It and when you share the question it won't show who asked it. I know you said you have an Instagram account about trainers why not have another account about trains and railway? I think it might help you answering questions of your followers and I hope helps you. Also the mic on cameras I think its better and more clearer. I hope this long comment solves your problem and keep making great videos. Cheers Jordan

I personally prefer the old microphone for sound quality because I felt the sound had more depth but maybe that's just my preference.

Did you know that Bachmann made some of the narrow gauge engines like Skarloey for N gauge and did you know that Japan made their own N gauge Thomas Range?

Hi Will, would you be able to briefly explain the meaning of the 'permanent way' cleaning wagon ? Does it literally mean the wagon should only operate in a one way direction ? Sorry for the noob question. Anyone else, please feel free to chime in.

Awesome video! Just a question, Do you know how to repair Triang locomotives? I have a Stephenson's Rocket model that doesn't work and I believe it's due to some snapped wires. Can I send it to you to have a look?

Hi Will/IC82, how are you? Another awesome edition of Mailbox Monday, as it always is. I really wish i had the money to not only start building the model railway layout i want but also film and upload videos to my channel but i don't due to my late father not leaving any money whatsoever for myself or my mother. I really am at my wits end as i don't know what to do or how to go about it. I look forward to your next video, regards Gary.

Why didn't you visit the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway it is located near Folkestone. It runs from Dungeness to Hythe with it mainly based at New Romney. It's a narrow gauge railway that's about 13 miles from end to end, with 13 locos and 3 shunters. I also live right next to it.

I Will, Facebook has been a problem for me here in the USA. It locks up and says "there has been a problem" and then reloads. Impossible to finish looking at my messages. No idea how to deal with it, and my Facebook page is much much smaller than your page.
