    According to the official lore of the British Army's 57th Regiment of Foot, the term "die hard" meaning someone who refuses to give up originated at the Battle of Albuera in 1811. The 57th was struggling to stop the French from breaking through their line, and its Colonel, William Inglis, was hit by grapeshot to the neck and chest. Though gravely wounded, Inglis refused to be evacuated from the battlefield, choosing instead to remain with his troops. In terrible pain and losing a great deal of blood, he stayed by the regimental colors and exhorted his men to hold their ground or die trying with the words "Die hard 57th! Die hard!" Despite suffering heavy losses, the 57th did hold until the French were finally driven back, and for their stubbornly courageous stand, their regiment became known as "The Die Hards." The French commander, Marshal Soult, would later complain "I penetrated their center. I turned their flank. They were beaten. The day was mine. But they did not know how to run away!" There is evidence that the term "die hard" actually existed before the Battle of Albuera, but the 57th definitely earned it as their nickname.

      Natural charisma

    • @USCFlash
      @USCFlash 2 года назад +4

      Why is it crazy?
      It is actually pretty logical.
      Give a charismatic guy with a cool tough persona, a shot with a great script & great action director.
      Presto.
      Action success.
      Box office success.
      Action star created.
      That is how Hollywood works.
      Nothing crazy about it.
      That's the formula.
      Followed/mirrored the one set out by Schwarzenegger & Stallone once they each hit with their first action films Conan & Nighthawks (or First Blood if you don't consider Nighthawks straight out action & more crime thriller) Chuck NOrris (Breaker Breaker) Van Damme (Bloodsport) Seagal (Above the Law)

      @@USCFlash The only thing is the person you just described was not the profile that Willis fit at the time. I was a huge fan of his at the time, and he was known for comedy, not action. The 80s action hero formula was someone definitely bigger and more buff than a regular guy like Willis. He was charismatic, but never afraid. Always confident, always certain, and always cool. Willis destroyed all that by being a regular guy who was scared, made mistakes, and just did what he had to do. He was everything that our action heros at the time weren’t and that made him a legend. NOW, he’s created a new formula for being a hero and its great. 😀

    44:45 - Fun fact. The actor Alan Rickman actually did the "fall stunt" against a "green screen". The director John McTiernan told him that he would fall on a count of THREE. He is divorced with holly causing him in depression, john fell along with Hans because Hans grab his Rolex which is gift from holly. There's no holly in that hotel
      Producer thought that ending is very depressing so they make him more likeable, introduced holly in the hotel is the best decision they did for this movie. By making John has redemption arc, we all support John until the end. That's why this movie became the best Christmas movie of all time

    • @pedroafonso73
      @pedroafonso73 2 года назад +14

      No. First, I'm european and a smoker, and we don't do that. Second, there was a scene that was cut where the terrorists syncronized their watches when they got out of the truck. When they'd do that, we'd see that all their watches were the same well known brand and model. When John killed the first guy, he took his belongings, and then he noticed Hans' watch was exactly the same. Because they cut the previous scene for time we didn't get that reference.

    If you want an interesting social experiment, ask any American over the age of 35 to finish the phrase "Yippie Ki-Yay ..." American women will answer "Ki-Yo!". American men will answer "mother****er!"
    The other cowboy references at the end were showing that as much as Hans thought he knew cowboys, he really didn't. John Wayne was the iconic American cowboy. However, one of the greatest cowboy movies was "High Noon", which ended with Gary Cooper riding off with Grace Kelley. Hans conflated the two.

The best you get from them is an Academy Award for Effects or maybe Cinematography or Music ... never Best Picture or even Best Actor/Actress! Action movies that were on a par with _"Die Hard"_ have been short-changed for Awards!
      I think _"Master & Commander"_ did well, but only because they could label it as 'Historical Drama'! Same with _"Gladiator"_ ... that was an Action movie, no question! It just happened to be set 2000 years ago!

There are terrorists in future movies of this franchise...but, not in this one.

    Thee BEST Christmas Movie EVER. It Launched The Career of Bruce Willis, Has The Late Alan Rickman Giving Us a Splendid Performance as Hans Gruber (His FIRST Film Role Can You Believe That?) This film Gave us the Audience Characters WE Could Cheer For It Relaunched The Whole Action Film Franchise This Should have Won Oscars For Not Only Best Leading Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Bur Best Director & It Failed (DIE HARD Is Now Regarded as a CLASSIC ACTION, THRILLER & IT IS!!).

    When they dropped Hans Gruber, they lied to the actor on WHEN they'd do it. Mighta been a legitimate pants-pooping going on there.

    No, he is not Doctor Strange.🤣🤣🤣 He is (or rather was, may he rest in peace) Alan Rickman, a great, incredible English film and stage actor, known for having played, apart from Hans Gruber, the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood, the angel Metatron in Dogma , or the magnificent Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies. An actor who has not played a single bad role in his entire life. If there is any ranking of the best villains in film history, Hans Gruber should be in that ranking.

    It’s fascinating watching the RUclips version because it tells you what the reactors consider primary importance versus secondary importance that didn’t make the cut. This script is so beautifully crafted and yet they didn’t quite engage with some of its key setups and payoffs.

    Bruce Willis is retiring. He has been diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that robs you of the ability to communicate. It can affect your ability to speak, write and understand language, both verbal and written.

    6:24 there was no (rayping) going on there…a couple minutes earlier, the couple burst into that room looking for somewhere private to get it on…
    …what you saw here and made the incorrect conclusion was the villains simply interrupted sexy times between the two consenting adults, and were trying to get them out into the main room ASAP with the rest of the hostages…

    10:25 It was funny and kind of curious when Michelle stopped herself when she started to say "Just blow his head off!....".
    Makes me wonder if she's been in a situation where she's said that in real life.
