They were nominated but the Oscars are political and not the best candidates. Alan Arkin for supporting actor in Little Miss Sunshine? It's a fun film but no one will remember him in that role. Academy just felt he was due. Whitaker is usually an underrated actor but he isn't as good as Leo. Leo has zero Oscars and Forest got his that year for Last King of Scotland. At this rate, they'll have to give him Leo of those legacy ones when he is dead or old. I think it was Matt Damon who said that the rest of the actors just get chosen for their films after Leo has passed on them. :)

really does suck how blood diamonds are real. just because people in developed, rich parts of the world want a diamond for a wedding, people in other parts of the world are being dragged into a life of violence and suffering, where their lives are worth less than a rock. sad, how we can unknowingly cause so much suffering. that's why it's important to know how our stuff is made, where it comes from. our enjoyment could be someone else's exploitation...

It isn't just that way. You skip the introduction speech? He's saying it is/was like that with ivory, rubber, oil, gold and he didn't even mention opium, spices, salt. cocaine and slaves. Unfortunately the world isn't all black & white but has many shades of grey. Nations killed each other even when they weren't fighting over "stuff". Sometimes it's just prestige or hate.

This is one of the great fictional movies that depicts real world events. Thank you ladies for watching it. I know you had questions about the why of the rebels doing what they do to their own people. The best movie to answer that in my opinion is tears of the sun with Bruce Willis. I worked in the international diamond industry in the 1980s and early 90s. The stuff i have seen you might not believe. This movie is not bad. It gets a lot right but some key stuff wrong. First off, illicit diamond buyers - IDBs in industry jargon - were nearly all lebanese. It was the private military companies’ job to provide ‘security’ on the mines but also to hunt the IDBs in the bush. The way that was organised defies description. It was kind of as depicted but a lot more personal and IDB hunters operated in very small teams. The security operations involved a lot more more british. And where they came from and how they got there might surprise people. Later there were nutcase russians and soviet ethnics. One of those teams even had a mil hind soviet helicopter. They used to get blasted on whatever alcohol they could find then fly around shooting up the bush with it.
The big error is where the diamonds went. They never went to london. They went to Antwerp - specifically the CSO office there. IDBs would only sell there to the CSO. You went in amd your diamond would be purchased, no questions asked and you take whatever price is offered. Back then CSO was a worldwide cartel. No one else would buy a conflict diamond because if they did they’d lose their right to their ‘sight’ of CSO cartel diamonds. Nothing to do with ‘best price’. Also, theres no way a CSO guy would do business outside the Antwerp office on a conflict diamond. Security on diamonds was always unbelievably tight (except in india, where the small shit is cut) and discretion was the priority.
CSO stands for central selling organisation. There was CSO Central (london) and CSO Zurich. CSO Zurich holds the biggest corporate secret in the world: what diamonds are held in the CSO Vaults in the mountains in zurich? Thats what the last scene is.
CSO was a de beers front to avoid sanctions on south Africa. That worked because of who these people were connected to, but eventually the cartel was broken up because of the Russians and canadians flooding the market and because of the USA busting the CSO for cartel activities. When that happened there was no real demand for conflict diamonds anyway, except for angolan green cubes. Thats how the kimberley protocol came about.
With the profits gone, Executive Outcomes and Sandline International moved on to dumber and more risky things.
A guy like danny archer would never exist: IDBs and the PMCs were blood enemies. Noone ever crossed that line. Also, to do that would be way too risky. Just thinking about anyone doing that boggles my mind. You’d be dead in 5 minutes if you did that.

Great reaction 👍👍 ..... this movie is 1 of my favorites along side with (hotel Rwanda) movie , it's crazy how it's based on actual events of villagers being killed and people being killed over diamonds especially that long sleeve or short sleeve part .... There's a documentary about blood diamonds and it shows people that went through it .....in these kind of movies it shows how much of a consumer people are in each country to the point that it never crossed our minds on how alot of the African people got treated and what they go through just so that we can have things that sparkles when the sunlight hits it.....I'm pretty sure still to this day there's blood being spilled over diamonds

But diamonds aren't rare. We don't need the conflict diamonds to satisfy sparkly jewelry. Besides Amsterdam having a vault of them, so do places in Russia and India. Places like DeBeers wants to keep the value high when they are probably worth 1/10th and 99% of people can't tell the difference with synthetics.

That scene when Solomon was talking to his son trying to get the gun from him and he said I know they made you do bad things and his son started crying because he still has a good heart that's like when Goku was fighting Frieza and Frieza said you see just a Beast Goku said I rather be a Mindless monster then a heartless Beast like you so my point is even though DIA mind was taking over my drugs and he couldn't think clearly anymore but his heart was still the same that's why his dad was able to get through to him

Conveniently enough, synthetic (lab made) diamonds, rubies, and other gemstones are cheaper, and actually more structurally flawless. They shine brighter for half the price and none of the bad karma.
