Would not say that. Many films are succesful at the box office, even if they are ahead of their time. Look at the big ones in the past. There are multiple ways to be ahead of your time. In the cinematic way (tech. film making) like for example "The Matrix" with all the crazy visuals and CGI for it's time or like this movie in the theme/story. Sure, ppl watched and liked the movie back then, but don't forget... this movie was in a time where "Jim Carrey" was THE man for entertainment, so ppl watched the movies with their known and loved stars anyway.
Where you would be right in my opinion is, that this movie wasn't ground breaking, like some of the "ahead" movies, but not every movies has to be like that. At the end it doesn't really matter, it's an insane good written and acted movie.

when thinking about the logistics and paperwork that would involve producing The Truman Show, consider this: General Hospital, the drama series, has been running it's 'first season' since 1963.
it never ended... it never had a season finale... it's been shifting storylines and characters since day 1.... technically it's still in it's first season, spanning 7600 episodes.

You guys might be too young to remember, but these movies both came out when Reality TV was becoming such a popular phenomenon in the culture. It's made by Ron Howard who I love! He was a child actor on TV here, that grew up to be a great Director. I think the only movie of his you've seen so far was "Apollo 13". It stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and it's more of just a fun cute movie.

Alot of reality TV shows came out, most famously at the time "Big Brother" where a group of random people are sealed in a house for a couple of months/ a year to see how they react to eachother, and we watch that.
The Truman Show is an parody of this Phenomena.

In the US, crossed fingers have 2 meanings. If you say you have your fingers crossed it means you are wishing it happens. Probably a Christian connotation with a cross. But, there is a different meaning - if you make a promise but you cross your fingers it means you aren't really promising. The crossed fingers are crossing out the promise. This is why Truman's wife had her fingers crossed when she was saying "I do" at their wedding.
