No one tell Alex that he's sat in the same R8 that Jeremy Clarkson ripped round the Dunsfold Autodrome cause he'll lose his mind
Good eye!
Nice spot👍

I was just about to say that. Same R8 Jeremy used against Hammonds Carrera 4s. That thought came to me when he said it was audi's own press car. Same colour combo and all.
Holy shit you remembered that plate
That R8 is exactly the one Clarkson drove on Top Gear in 2007.
Yeah cuz it's audi's press car
Thought I'd seen that reg somewhere before!
This is Audi's press car. It's at the history fleet of the press section
Nice catch!
....and the one JayEmm had on his channel a few months back.
07:41 I think the MR2 needs a longer aerial, personally.
Unplugged mine because of this

Looks like it belongs on the kitchen floor on a christmas morning 😂
I remember the early 80's fad of 8ft long fibreglass Ariel's that you fitted to the front wing, bent over and attached to the rear of the cars roof gutter rail (when front wing Ariel's and gutter rails existed)
I think we were trying to replicate the USA CB radio look👴
Typical old Toyota's aerials, I've the same in my Supra and Celica lol

Then I was determined, we will never buy a car of high value again. Only one that brings fun. I don't need worries like that in my life. If we didn't have a couple of kids, we would drive a mx5 or MR2 I think. Or a van.
Just replaced my rusty NC Mx5 with an 04 plate Mr2 and absolutely loving it. It just feels so much lighter and you really dont see that many about now unlike the Mx5.

They're way more expensive in Canada than the equivalent of 2500 GBP. Most are 2 - 3x that price, and they were pretty rare here, too :(

I adore my MR2! Like a road legal go kart 😍
I had one and sometimes regret letting it go... ah well.
1:20 Were those prices wrong or is the C8 really almost twice as much in the UK as in the US?
I thing they are,
That mr2 is about $15,000 in USA, =$12,300 euro
They are, after US dealer mark-ups, then shipping costs, then UK dealer mark-ups too, you’re looking to spend at least £120k here in the UK.
The euro is worth more than the US dollar. I think 1.25 to 1
My brother has been working in car sales in Australia for over 10 years. Sent him a photo of an F150 Raptor and asked how much...landed and registered, about $220k (USD$170k)
@@08is300 The MR2 being so cheap in the UK is a completely different story. You should see watching CT cheap car challenges where they get these great cars for $1000 that you couldn't find in the US for less than 5k or even 10k. I'm not sure all the reasons for the much lower prices for used cars in the UK, but a lot of it has to do with lower demand and tax breaks which means older cars pay more to stay on the road (we don't have anything like that in the US, some government agencies actually pay more for people to drive old cars).
Basically, used cars like the MR2 are much cheaper in the UK, but new American cars are more expensive due to shipping costs and ultra-high demand.
I would be happy to have an MR2 because I can afford using it daily
This is like one of those old Fifth Gear episodes with the cars in the 3 different price ranges
i really do hope this show makes it to a big tv network, it capture the love of cars like old top gear along with funny and genuine chemistry amongst the presenters
The MR2 Mk3 is basically a road legal go-kart, and to improve it to something performant is relatively simple for a competent mechanic swapping the engine with a 2ZZ, straightforward job and 189HP instead of 138HP;
then if you add just some stiffening to the chassis and suspensions, better brakes and better wheels and tyres you will have a nice track day toy that can also be driven every day for a very reasonable price.
@Pollywog I am so sorry it was boring for you, please feel free to add something more interesting

I've had my MK3 MR2 3 years now. The longest I have kept ANY car.
It's an absolute hoot to drive, it's just such great fun. People who moan about them have never driven one, I never clamber out of it without grinning.
I owned a MK3 MR2 for about 5 years. In terms of value for money, you have to love the MR2. Great fun to own and lovely to drive. Far more refined than you would expect but a hoot to drive fast. Slick engine and gearbox with tight steering. The handbrake is an appalling design and you are advised to pull out two lambda sensors and check the condition of the pre-cats. I would also advise checking the hydraulic pipes for rust - both brakes and steering. Other than that, highly recommended. I have driven the R8 and to be honest it wouldn't be my first choice at that price.
Each MR2 is of its time, and i feel you have to look at the ownership prospects in 2021, rather than looking too much to the past.
Mk1 MR2: The original and best MR2. Nimble and light (under a ton) with stunning 16v twincam highly revving engine and excellent handling. Stunning car for 1985.
Mk2 MR2: I know this car has its fans, but having owned all of them, this is my least favourite. Heavier and more like a GT car. Yes - we all know the Turbo is the fastest in a straight line, but the Mk2 doesn't handle as well as the Mk1 and Mk3.
Mk3 MR2: Engine lacks the character of the 1st iteration, but i still feel is the spiritual successor to the Mk1. Light (again under a ton) and sublime handling. Owners know there is just enough storage space behind the seats (with bespoke luggage bags available) for a short weekend away. Non owners constantly regurgitate the "no boot" dross.
Overall, given the price of a good Mk1 MR2 now, I feel that the Lotus Elise (especially S2) with Toyota engine is the natural and best successor to the MR2, but obviously at a price.
In 2021, with a limited budget, nothing touches the MR2 Mk3 as an ownership prospect.
@Eye Patch Guy Very little I'm afraid, so can't advise. There's lots of info on RUclips though. I believe the turbo version is more sought after than the NA version so fetches a higher price. They have a big fan base, so lots of help available.
@@tsmith7146 That's a fair assessment. I would add that my MR2 MK3 had over 160K miles on it when I sold it and the engine was still going strong. The model was facelifted around 2004 which gave it, among other things, a six speed gearbox. This was the version I had.
I agree that the post 2003 facelifted 6 speed Mk3 version is the best to go for. Mk3 MR2's values have noticeably been increasing over the last few years, with Sable Grey (the best colour i feel for Mk3's) MR2's in particular being snapped up when put on sale. One mistake Toyota made with the Mk3 was including a red cloth upholstery option for the seats. It looks horrendous!
Those Toyota MR2 cars are selling for $40,000 each here in Ontario, Canada, they are selling like gold now! You can get the used R8 way cheaper!

It's a perfect reference between the R8 and the C8. What Audi did to the Supercar market with the R8; Corvette has now done all over again. It forces Ferrari, Porsche, and Lamborghini to have to justify themselves again. They are overpriced status symbols. We need these R8 and C8 heroes; otherwise the sports car and super car market will always be a playboy's market; out of reach of the common man. Well done Audi! Well done Corvette!
Especially in the US where the Corvette is cheaper than anywhere else. I've been seeing at least 1 mid-engined Corvette per day since it came out, always driven by a 50 year old man in sunglasses blasting Lynyrd Skynyrd
5:00 dam that transition is smoother then my brain
Props to the filming and editing teams. definitely stealing some moves from you guys.
That aside, Iove my MR-S and I'm so glad it will be back on the road soon!
I have so many mixed feelings when watching videos like this... around where I live, the cheapest MR2 (2002, 170000 km) in my country is around 8000£ and the R8 (2012, 30000km) is 135000£. I adore cars but hate the price we have to pay for them...
I sold my MR2 for an RX8 about 10 years ago, what was I thinking?! Wish I still had it, seriously misunderstood car.
@BIG DONGLE I’ve got two MR2s and an RX8 and love them all but no, even a modified RX8 like mine won’t spank an MR2. Both have amazing well balanced handling and grip on the right tyres but the MR2 is some 400kg lighter and it shows when changing direction.
MR2's are fantastic cars. Nothing touches them for the price.
A cool FYI about the MR2 roadster: I did a fuel economy test on mine, i drove like a sensible granny for a 22 mile round trip on the b roads, and i got 44mpg! not bad for a car originally made in 1999, and when blasting it.. the 1/4 mile time isnt bad either at about 15 - 15.5 secs
More info on my mpg test here: instagram.com/p/CA0la9unLRx/
I make a lowly salary so the MR2 was the perfect choice. Convertible, toyota reliability and affordable parts and phenomenal handling. I get beat off the line at lights by economy sedans and there's no practicality at all for daily driving but I still love the damn thing.
You get beaten off the light? You're not driving it right. I have a 2005 MR2 and I beat 95% of stuff off a red light.
@BIG DONGLE I’ve got 2 MR2s and a modified RX8 and awesome though the RX8 is the MR2 is even better down a twisty B road.
@BIG DONGLE you're slating the MR2 in every one of your comments. We get it, you like the RX8. You've obviously never driven an MR2, you must be salty one spanked you on a B road
