Thats a terrible engine to have that combustion palace malice.
At least they are cheap to fix right? … no not at all.
@@TheQuestionableGarage😂1qlk
I was hoping you would be here, ever since seeing you drop your Porsche engine.
Erics here! I do cars is one of the most underated channels in youtube. I love to see his support through comments here!
what a bad engine
When I heard you start that engine last time, it hurt my soul. Then you did it again...and somewhere a German engineer got his wings.
😂😂😂😂😂
Not likely, he probably fought in the war, tough as nails. His NEIN NEIN NEIN du ass!! Some say Can still be heard.
Nah a Gsrman engineer got his wings, because he died in shock and pain. Like Obi-Wan said 'millions of voices crying out in terror'
Every time a flat six dies, an angel gets their wings?
Big money, I need the badge
This time it's worth doing the right thing. Best of luck Jared. The channel is working out well. I have not missed a single video. Thanks for all the efforts.
Awesome! Thank you!
Let’s go!
I'm mostly impressed Jared knew Charlie Brown's teacher's phone number. Looking forward to seeing this thing run !
I was going to post the same thing.
I'm also impressed that Charlie Brown's teacher will sponsor a Porsche rebuild.
Wah wah wah wah waaah.
@@murrys5444 im even more impressed that charlie browns teacher is still alive
Jared, hats off to your honesty at leaving your comfort zone to learn a totally different level of cars from the jdm world.Your channel gets better and better!
I’ve never seen a Porsche motor taken apart. What an engineering marvel. Such a complex design. I am impressed. I also want to say that the reason I watch your videos is for you. Your personality and the humor you inject into the video is awesome! Thank you.
The I do cars reference was nice to hear. He is highly underrated and does an excellent job showing the inner parts of some unique motors
Jared. I have a C4S that failed in exactly the same fashion. It was frustrating as the engine was already a reman fitted by Porsche. Some pretty experienced techs were unable to explain what it was or how it got there. However I seized scavenge pump, stretched chain, lost timing and bent 12 valves. $8000 seems on the low side in my experience.
So the exact issue! I was speaking with THE head guys, and the late model m96 like what’s in this car has some major issues with valve guides and valve seats… head costs are going to be a bit higher than expected but they all are getting addressed and it will be built OEM++
@@TheQuestionableGarage I have a ton of experience and did a lot of research on my options. Happy to share. I have my car now with a 4.0 litre in it but still not sure that was right decision :-)
@@TheQuestionableGarage my engine was a .03 build which was the last variant of the 3.6 M96. It had oversize IMS bearing and a host of other updates versus the early ones. It had only 19k miles on it when it failed. Mine failed catastrophically while driving with no warning. I have some nice pics of the foreign object in the scavenge pump. I recognized the drive lug sheared off the same as mine when you were first dismantling pump. Same exactly thing I saw.
I cant believe that caused the engine to fail either, I imagine the thought of some small bit like that floating around should concern a few 911 owners who already thought they fixed their car
He was told not to do it but he did 😅
Mine had a complete new motor replacement by Porsche for the same kind of breakage
"Variable compression AND variable timing options....."
😄 🤣 😂 😆 😄
I would be tempted to check the valve seats and just replace the bent valves.... Would fit with the fix and flip ethos! Either way, rebuild the engine, retains the value of the car! Thanks for the video!
It's so good to see when RUclipsrs show that sometimes engine rebuilds should be left to the professionals.
inspecting the engine first is key. And basically if it doesn't start be prepared to buy another engine.
Jonathan hit the nail on the head. I was an engineer for kia (manufacturing not design) and they were constantly looking for cost reduction to the tunes of hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. It was actually a part of our annual performance review there. I won't say engineers are blameless by any means, but typically most problems can be traced by following the dollars 🤣🤣
Looking forward to see where this goes!
Kia=barf
@@christinesommerfeld9815 I mean, they paid pretty good and paid salary plus overtime sooooo...
Look at Jared sneaking in a Factor ad mid engine build!
I thought they did the timing chain in the front and rear so they could use the same head casting for both heads. I had an ‘02 Boxster and lived in fear if the ims bearing the whole time I owned it. I was thinking about getting a Cayman this time but opted for a C7 Corvette instead. I figured at least I’m familiar with a push rod v8.
Yup, good old LT1, you could replace it with a brand new crate engine and take a nice holiday for what the rebuild is costing on this Porsche.
LOL “ malice in the combustion palace”. That’s cool you like I do Cars also!
It doesn't matter how much engineering you put into an engine. Something is designed to fail if that said engine isn't taken care of properly. Amazing job by you Two explaining everything. I knew nothing about this type of engine. Now I'm terrified to buy a Porsche. LOL
lol Jared, I like how you snuck in a commercial for Factor without doing a full commercial 😂
thats what they call a segway in the biz😁
Just getting started on this episode! I’m stoked to see what we dive into keep up the great work!
Loving this channel. Really hope you rebuild this engine properly. Keep up the good work, even though it must be long hours, hard work and expensive. It will be worth it in the future. Respect from 🇬🇧.
Jared, great video. This dude knows what he's talking about. I rebuilt one on my channel last year and yes, these engines are great if you take care of them. P.S. AOS = Air/Oil Separator. Don't forget, oil cooler, new bolts, injectors and rods. I built mine using the Jake Raby M9X assembly guide. Let me know if you have any questions! Good luck!
Thanks for the info!
Quality episode holy smokes jared the step up in production here is feeling like yall hitting your stride. Keep it up!
I recently discovered the stuff about the IMS bearing by chance researching Boxsters after finding some at good prices. Theres a whole cottage industry providing fixes for those things lol. Never been a big fan of Porsche but love seeing the rebuild of the engine for sure! Also, AWD is fun, people do use LS engines for some AWD cars in drag racing i think lol
I can vouch for the Miata owners out there... we're not gonna be offended if you say our cars aren't fast. Unless they've been engine swapped or have a massive turbo or something, they aren't. Horsepower isn't what makes them fun!
And Miatas don't break down due to el cheapo stupid engineering.
@@Moreda64 Hey, that's expensive stupid engineering! 😀
@@Moreda64mine’s 31 years old and it still runs great. No one was daily driving 31 year old cars in 1992, it’s crazy how reliable a miata is when left stock.
I mean, I don't own a Miata (I would love to, my dream car after all) but even I agree that it's not fast.
Yup, my little NA is definitely not quick. But it still runs great to this day and is super fun in the turns!
Awesome as always. Thanks for sharing and taking us along
I saw Moist Sump open for Primus at the Catalyst in 97'. Good Show.
It's only a Porsche!😂
Seriously, looking forward to seeing it come together.
Crazy that those parts are going to cost that much. Regardless, I'm looking forward to seeing Jared work his magic on a nice exotic instead of some run-down economy car. This is gonna be great!
Charlie Brown adult voice on the phone at the end. Love it.
This is awesome to see to learn. Just bought the same car in a cold environment. All good to know
Glad it's going smoothly for you!!! Nice video 📹 and workmanship
I hope this build gets you the views to recoup anything you spend and a ton more. Always wishing the best for you.
Loved it. Not Porsche fan but now I love watching this because you and Tony.
keep em going jared super pumped for this one tbh,
in the meanwhile while youre sending out the engine to be fixed, you could always make videos fixing everything else on the car , that way the car is stil bringing in some revenue and you can look out for another project too :-)
I love that Jared just referenced Eric Berg from "I do cars" I used to do BMW cruises with him and some other guys around the St Louis area several years ago (2016-ish)
That shortcut comment at 10:00 or so is something to take to heart. Not just about working with cars but with everything, seen that "can't diagnose" so goddamn many times because people have just learned do this so this happens without understanding why it happened :)
Good choice of friend, he seems a pretty solid bloke.
The most important or really the key thing to understand about cracked connecting rods is that you don't lose any material when the machine scores the edge and they crack the rods, if you CUT the rods with ANYTHING you're going to lose even the thinnest of surfaces and they'll NEVER perfectly fit back together no matter WHAT you do to them, you can only REMOVE more, never with a crack. A crack is a perfect break and they'll go back together as naturally as possible. It's a good thing.
Have you seen the K997 project?
Good choice if you want to swap the engine. He sells the kit and every thing.
Best teardown I have ever seen great job
Nice video! Also nice that you give I Do Cars a shoutout!
Jared, look up Duke Engineering 180 degree headers for LS 911. They make some for the 997 and they probably will fit a 996.
I’m super hopeful your going to rebuild this engine! This is totally worth doing “
Loving the Porsche…..on a different note, was wearing my orange Wrench everyday roadside assistance shirt yesterday. Lady stops me because her car broke down at the Petro in Hammond,La. Told her she had the wrong person. And she insists i help her because of the front of the shirt. I point to the, you’re on your own on the back. Let’s just say, she had some choice words after reading it……..
That was fascinating,thank you...
I have some experience in rebuilding the very old air-cooled flat-six Porsche engines (the chassis number on my car was 901180, suggesting it was the 180th 911 ever built), and omigod, it's coming up on sixty years ago! It is unbelievable how *simple* that engine was compared to these new water-cooled, IMS equipped monsters. To think that in my naivete I thought I could just take the engine apart and figure it all out as I went... and I did! There's not a chance in the world that would work with these new ones!
Great video Jared. Nice to see an engine strip that isn’t just all time lapse. Surely the only way is to rebuild it properly and sell for a good profit. Borrow the money and pay it back once it’s sold - don’t your bank like you? If I was in the USA I’d lend it to you (seriously!)!!! Good luck and keep up the great content
My little die-cast C4S is the closest ill get to ownership, but a silver 996 C4S is a dream car of mine. Loving this build for information.
First time seeing a porsche engine open, impress to see the timing facing harmonic balancer in Right side and Flywheel on Left side.
You don't need both kidneys 😂😂
Hell yeah , my man Jonathan rocking Capsize merch, man of culture this man
Oof, I really hope the porsche build picks up quickly again, I really think it's interesting!
Build an engine disassembly table with walled edges and a slight angle on the tabletop to a drain and oil collector tank. Seems like you could use it in the future.
I smell a BBQ Questionable Garage Sale for the funds to go towards the Porsche Potty.
There's a guy in Maryland cramming LS engines into the AWD 996 and 997... Pretty intense. Thanks for the share
I’ll watch this video as many times as it takes for you to get that money. Excited for the build.
I love the videos! But definitely enjoyed the questionable starting 🤣
You mentioned Eric!!!! Yay!!!!!!
Ya... Get a loan, and make the rebuild happen. You'll be able to repay it and make money on the flip for sure with a RUclips documented rebuild. Maybe a machine shop will contact you after this vid, also. One that can pump it out faster and is also qualified.
Oh i love your cliffhanger ending this time too 😂😂😂
Looking forward to more Porsche videos!
If you don't rebuild this engine, and get this car sorted....COME ON JARED!
Good luck Jared. For my part I promise to watch all the videos to the end and comment lol
I appreciate that and is more than I can hope for!
Once, some windex fumes ended up on the engine while I was cleaning my porsche's windows. The engine completely dissolved in less than 5 minutes.
The bore scoring on the cylinder is caused by the liner on the piston wearing out causing aluminum on aluminum contact. The 996/997 are notorious for this . Estimates for parts alone is $7k. Estimates for parts and labor can run as high as $20k on a motor rebuild.
I came for the IMS bearing and did not leave dissapointed.
Pretty sure there’s a couple of awd ls cards. There’s a cross awd commodore called adventura. From factory
9:43 Dont know exactly what chassis you are talking about here but yes theres ton of cars that have done AWD LS swaps. Suabrus (the LSX Sti), Rx7's,... Tons and TONS of cars. Ken Block had a Ford V8 powered AWD setup. In the "Hoonicorn" Ford Mustang build he had.
Holden Monaro HSV Coupe 4, Aussie made 5.7l LS all wheel drive, a very rare bird. you would know the car as being a Pontiac GTO in the states.
Y'all are making me change my career, I'm gonna do Priestley northwest garage! I'm gonna wrench every day+ I'm gonna do something epic for my community! You and all the other youtube car peeps are my inspiration.
That engine is a lot more complex than I would expect. Yikes!
Please keep up with this Porsche 🙏🙏🙏
Tony Angelo just drove an Awd Porsche on his channel that was LS swapped. Good luck Jared you'll be fine. Seems the rebuild is the way to go. More money, just takes some patience
Well if it is fixed right then you could get almost double your money so I guess it isn't that questionable. Nice vid I don't think I would be buying another one of these though.
you both made it look like it was doable which is impressive considering how complex a beast it is. hope you get it sorted. two months of Ferrari tuning here we go!
Hey now Ferrari is tuned and ready to go back home to Wizard! Editor Duane is busy with the footage.
bluetooh vvt is super high tech for a car of this year!
Yeah...No. perfect response! I like this guy already
On the cylinder heads, you could easily get the usable valves refaced and buy new to replace the bent ones, and then lap everything back in. German engines are great to simply repair as opposed to domestic engines where you often times have to replace everything. This is the only good thing about the typical German "over-engineered" cars. The only other thing I would consider is rod bearing replacement, and perhaps rings, but at 90k may be optional.
Editor Dwane I was sad you missed an opportunity to use the Wizards $1000 line on the parts list. It never gets old
When Mr. Piston and Mr. Valve have a fight, Mr. Piston *always* wins. 😛 Fixing it is the right choice. Even if you don't go into it with whomever, you could always sell some vehicles to fund the repairs; presuming that doesn't overly break the ethos of the series. Or, do what most people in this situation would do: open another credit card, promptly melt it, then pay it off when the car sells.
never seen a Porsche flat 6 pulled about before. What a nightmare of an engine design
That engine in way better shape than I thought.
I learned more about IMS bearings and all the weak spots of an early water cooled porsche listening to you two jabber-jaw'in while ur working @9:20
SHEESH that Porsche life
I got my heads done in like a week at a place in Baytown and I checked the heads after and they were perfect so I don't necessarily agree with that statement however maybe they're just more busy in your area
Good on 'ya saying "Porsch-uh" and then the rest of the time saying "Porsch!"
Cool build and thanks for taking the time to build this car right.
"LS Swap? : No, never" -- My man!
I drove a porch for a while. Sure its cheaper, but then again it stayed in park, and it only went as fast as the termites.
Fine forest engineering, its logo would have to be a tree.
I want a slow moving vehicle that travels about as fast as the fault lines of tectonic plates.
If this were a Lycoming IO-360, you would have have the aluminum structures dye-penetrant inspected. I'd really recommend it with this automotive cousin. With the valves caressing pistons, you may have cracks in several places. Valve train cast webbings in particular. It would be near criminal to any Porsche lover not to rebuild it! But this is your money to risk after all... Besides, Hoovie has done the LS swap and it's a brute rather than dance partner.
Pretty interesting that's forsure.
2:00 Because space, as you know the cylinders ain't exactly in front of each others, they are offset, this is space optimization.
AWD LS CONVERSION KIT , ALREADY BEEN DONE.
Check out Chavis performance in Baltimore Maryland. The guy Tony Angelo's is working with doing his all-wheel drive LS conversion. Dude is done like 20 of them
Sorry he did 25 of them and sold 15 kits
..well...its a questionable choice 😂, just do what you do best, build it right, and we'll still be here supporting you as always 💪
Just rebuild the engine. LS swapping will probably open a whole can of worms. But thank goodness you have professional friends that keep you on the straight and narrow! I think this project is the result of hanging around Freddy Tavarish too much. But stretching those mental muscles could well be a good thing. Looking forward to your success on this. But no rush. 😊
No good deed goes unpunished J, that jeep would have more than covered it🤣
Maybe consider a Honda J series if it all goes wrong. C series if adventurous. VG for the poop sounds lol...hope the rebuild goes well - can be worth replacing the bearings and whatnot with better stuff nowadays, OEMs don't exactly use the very best parts on their flagships...or engineering
Had a guy 1time brought me an dodge Omni motor wanted me to build it had it all in a box didn't have any rod caps on the rods I told him I believe I'll skip that job
Jared does a Factor spot in the video without doing a Factor spot... I love it.
I really do enjoy the product. I turn down sponsors and run videos without a placement if I don’t want to use the product. Some channels make videos for sponsors, I make videos for the audience and add a sponsor if they fit
The porsche in the background knowing it's being saved
Porsche: 😇
Wow i never waited for machine shop to do my head longer then a week but i live in Europe.
tnx for the video
Most welcome
