That was one of the best vids on 996 maintenance and upgrades I’ve seen. Thanks, Matt. And, as a 986 owner, appreciate the love you show to this often maligned, but truly wonderful generation of cars. They’re almost completely analog and driver-centric, while having the creature comforts that we’re lacking in the air cooled cars.
Whenever I bring my car to the shop for maintenance all I'm hearing the car-person say is: "Money, money money and the money will need money. But the money can be money-ed later. But it will money. Potentially more money but that will depend on the other money."
Awesome you continue to own the old 996, I too have a 1999 996 in black with the red interior , so far has been great and only 68k . I am doing the IMS and clutch and RMS soon. Love your videos.
The white, nylon triangular shifter side lever causes slop, too. There's a metal one on UniWerks that fixes this. Also, swapping out the clutch pedal return spring helps with the "on or off" feel of the clutch pedal. The shifter lines also wear a lot at connection points, but just the connections can be rebuilt for cheap. Doing all of that shifter and clutch work will reveal second gear pop-out issues, so if it happens, spend the 5 pounds for the ball bearing upgrade (it acts by adding tension to the spring).

Matt, still have my 3.4 996. I would be surprised the ims would fail on these early 3.4s to be honest. As the mileage clock up on these m96.1 engines then crank bearings are becoming an issue. So ensure oil is changed frequently. Great entry into 911 ownership though - still puts a smile on my face. Look forward to your next updates!

Great video! What a nice way to spend 30 mins. I had a similar noise at start up in my ‘99 3.4 and it was alleviated with a new EPS IMS and clutch/flywheel.
At about the time when your car was built I was having a "mid-life crisis", so I went to the local Porsche dealer and they brought out a couple of cars for me to drive. The salesman, whom I knew, went with me as we wound our way through some hills. The cars were fun to drive but had some obvious design flaws that were more or less troublesome depending on the road surface and speed. At the end, I said, "Hans (yes, his name), should I buy one? His response was, "You'd have to be completely insane." "Let's go into the shop and I'll show you what's there being repaired." There were about 10 cars, most with ridiculous failures. Needless to say, I regained my sanity and went home.
I'm dying to know what the gearbox leak is all about. Anyway, great work Mat. My previous 911 was 2000 996 Cab. I owned it for 20 years. It had 7 RMS and 3 IMS replaced! But I loved that car. I only had to get shut when the cab roof mechanism started to fail. To costly. I had a Fabspeed exhaust kit put on mine and a Kahn body kit with 19" wheels. What a car. While my new 911 is heaven sent, I miss my old darling 911 996.
I purchased a 2003 series two 996 Cabriolet in July 2023. It had just had the IMS bearing and some other bits replaced by the garage I purchased it from. (I received a copy of thre invoice to prove). The tyres although legal were over 5 yrs old so I replaced them all with new Perrelli P zero's. You can't be too careful with a high performance car. We've just started winter and with the cold weather it looks like I also need a new battery. The joys of owning cars is financially never ending.

Then the general wear and tear stuff like tyres, discs, etc are not cheap. if the tracking is off, they eat through rear tyres.
@@blackporscheroadster-yw8hb i appreciate your input a lot. I’m just going to stick with the model versions because I don’t feel like owning a money pit.
The rollercoaster ride of emotion is very real!
Why do all car channel show thumbnails with the host showing his mouth open like if the world were about to end? Such an unnecessary trend!
These Mf are finding all the ways to make people clicking to view .
Open wide, boy
Cuz it got you to click the video
Mrbeast explained that in a video, the same principle used for the ClashOfClans barbarian with be mouth open
We were spared the red arrow
PCCM+ is absolute perfection. I installed one on my 986 S and it is now the perfect blend of modern convenience and classic mechanical Porsche. I look forward to my next project being a 996!
31:38 is where the fault came.. 😉😂
Matt you inspired me to get a 996! I should be taking delivery sometime next week, very excited! Hopefully I can find as great of a mechanic as yours...
Where’s the Tesla model S plaid you Odered?
In garbage like it deserves
🥱 Already broken down on the side of the road !.........
Not yet available in the UK
@@alancrisp1582probably still worth more than the price of shit you drive.
Its a tesla. So maybe in 2-3 years...
What was your bill at Renworks for all that work?
Splendid! Now I'm tempted to find one of these 996s... WAIT!
Nice to get all that quality work for free 😀
Or even Super quality worker.
Hi Matt
Top marks for getting the most recommendations into one video. It’s a shame they would be a long drive for some subscribers.
He saw you coming - let's rip the engine to pieces on this perfectly fine RUclipsr's car 🤣. Maybe you could do a Mat Watson/Matt Armstrong crossover episode though?
Maybe 2024 January.
There is a wet IMS Kit with an oil line feeding a new wet IMS directly, you can fit it and forget about the IMS for ever
Ohh you did it well done jajajaja😅
I just love how you could easily own any Porsche and you chose to keep the fried-egg model. A true enthusiast - maximum respect mate!
Try and fit your GT3 RS in Yianni's garage
Great video! What a nice way to spend 30 mins. I had a similar noise at start up in my ‘99 3.4 and it was alleviated with a new EPS IMS and clutch/flywheel.
Ah, the legendary, the mythical German quality strikes again!
I've just bought a similar 996in green ...keeping my fingers crossed for no engine issues!
What a car. While my new 911 is heaven sent, I miss my old darling 911 996.
not a coincidence that the short shifter and flywheel were changed then the transmission broke. too much pressure on the unit.
996 is a beautiful classic. Well worth all the effort. Love it
Mat when it come to cars is as sharp as a beach ball.
So glad to see an actual full video instead of stupid ‘shorts’
Ed is a keeper! Lovely treatment.
Still got my 2003 911. Love it.
I still replaced the IMS bearing in mine to be safe!
Hmm... wonder if the lighter flywheel transferred more stress to the transmission?
I really enjoyed watching this 33 minute advert , some good stuff .
