The low temperature (71C) thermostat is supposed to help prevent bore scoring by keeping the engine more evenly cooled. The M96 closes some coolant passages on start in order to get the coolant up to temperature more quickly (which helps with emissions iirc). Unfortunately, that can also cause uneven temps from cylinder to cylinder which can supposedly cause score in cylinders 5 and 6. The lower temperature thermostat opens those passages earlier, allowing the block and cylinders to heat for evenly. Love the content!
This makes sense, I have an LN Engineering low temp t-stat on order along with a new water pump for my M96. I live in the high desert so cooling is critical!
Fellow 996 owner here…. The M96 engine came with a plastic impeller water pump for a reason. They don’t damage the engine block when they fail. The metal impeller will destroy (beyond repair) the engine block if it fails (and they do fail).
Man you did great! Really fixed the overheating, also added a lot of value to the car as a bonus.. Love the colour, and you did well to fit high quality parts to fix all issues. I would keep the special exhaust which came with the car. I'm not convinced deleting the suitcase mufflers is a real upgrade. Yes it's loud, raw, but lacks in sufistication. I must admit in some parts of the rev range it sounds impressive, but it would really get on my nerves in long distance driving as it's too loud inside. I think you took a gamble on the car, which worked out great! It's been cared for obviously, expensive exhaust fitted, which sounds well balanced. Nice colour, good spec 911. And now she's fixed and ready for you to enjoy. ☺
Helpful hint while you’re pulling vacuum bleed the air from that line that does into the bucket full of coolant. Slowly open the fill valve until coolant reaches the bleeder. And also always close the vacuum valve and fill valve and see if she holds the vacuum for a few minutes. Not sure if you did that or not.
When I replaced the water pump on my Cayman I opted for the OEM plastic impeller because if the bearing ever fails, the metal impeller will carve into your block and ruin it. That's what the boards taught me at least. Also, the low temp thermostat is used to prevent the two farthest cylinders on these flat sixes from lightly overheating on startup and promoting bore scoring over time.
Dude I love your videos, and your builds. I find your content so refreshing to watch, since you keep the cars true to themselves and you’re not ruining them with tasteless mods. Looking forward to more content!
It looks like this is finally a car you're keeping along with the Volvos. I can't say enough how impressed I am with the skills and knowledge you've gained since you created this channel. Cheers, Willem! ✌
Been following your film channel for years and love this new content. Recently got a 1998 996 and just changed the engine mounts too - they looked like yours, worn out. Congrats on the car and keep up the great work, Willem!
Las calidad de las tomas, la edición, la música, los detalles...conocí tu canal por el v70 y la verdad que te superas en cada video. Impresionante el trabajo y la dedicación. Abrazo grande y saludos desde Argentina
The Honda crv table is so funny to me lmao, a 3.6 carrera 2 is one of my attainable dream cars so any content about these is so fun to see, looking forward to more videos in the future!
@@wheelemverb I'm here for it. Square seems to be on a big kick again. Too bad you missed out on the Raid money lol. From some of the smaller creators I've talked to, it was incredible.
hey! perfect car! Two things I would consider if it was my car! the first is to remove those ugle black bumper stops from the back. Those kill the whole vibe of the car. Than adding some very light wheel spacers to just make the car a little bit more agressive. Everything else is great! good job
Hyped to see you getting more views and getting sponsored! I still miss my brother's totaled S60R I wish it could have ended up back on the road and back in my hands haha.
I had a similar project as your, ine the same time, with the v70r, but a E91 with a single turbo N54 swap 6mt. And I'm looking at a new project and the 996 was in my head since 4or5 years. If I have a chance to find one like your, it would be awesome, your video might be a sign ! who knows !
The content ist so nice, very informative but relaxing at the same time. You're a super cool guy but you are humble and soft-spoken + you really get that joy ouf of the pulls at the end, your face sais it all. Glad I found your channel! ✌️
You're not only a fantastic photographer, you're also a car guy who makes fantastic videos. Extra fun that you have a Volvo (I'm from Sweden) and also a 911, the world's most fantastic car. You do an amazing job, and I love your amazing photos and you are a great source of inspiration. 🤩👍
great video , in my experience in driving European cars now for over 43 years now most brands use a higher degree thermostat than north American vehicles , like my different Volvos run 89 or 91 degree thermostats, OEM parts are usually a better fit, the plastic impeller water pump i have heard not many good things about them, we know metal impellers stand up to the high temps better than the plastic ones do and the modern water pumps now with the o ring design are less prone to leaking also, I just changed a leaking pump on a Golf Mark 4 2 litre engine and found out the pump was fine just needed a new o ring seal so we got to return the pump, the car sounds incredible on those 3rd gear pulls, epic 👍
sinistro, Willem. acompanho seu canal principal de fotografia e esse aqui também, amo carros e acho incrível como você é talentoso pra lidar com esses dois universos. peace!
the thermostat is upgrade that most 996 and 997 owners do to help prevent borescoring. i have it done to my 997 C2S. it def takes long to get oil temps up to normal but water temp isn't that bad
Not sure why you didn't remove the rear bumper liner. Makes it all easier. I believe the bolts that hold the mounts are micro-encapsulated. The coolant color looked sus. Just keep burping the coolant res and you'll be fine. Jacking up the 996 is a major PITA. I use a quick jack now. I own two 996s. Be sure you use a wooden block if you lift by the sump. It'll help distribute the weight.
if you have any leaks or issues going forward with your water pump, my indy porsche guys always recommended a light sealant on the water pump. Hylomar is my go to.
Such a beautiful car! I wish the video was longer :)) Sitting here in denmark and looking at the only used 996 i can find, the price is around 48k usd.. automatic transmission btw. how much did you pay again? haha. is yours awd?
I just absolutely love this type of content. Just a chill guy in his garage working on his cars and with a dope lo fi beat in the background
what this guy said
This except the lo-fi screeching. I prefer wrench noises
amen
Therapeutic it is
Man is subtly flexing his CRV table while showing us his new parts.
Crv table is priceless!
@ I know I’ve been trying to find one at pick n pulls for years and they’re always the first thing taken!
Most crv owners want to keep it
Porsche guy here. The green on the bolts is the factory anti corrosion coating! Love the Volvo content too man, keep it up.
Okay, now i gotta try drinking coolant
Main takeaway from this video
Sweet, then sour. Like a Sour Patch in reverse. Sounds yummy
That is a righteous sound coming out of that machine! Glad you got it running proper.

I’d much rather replace a metal water pump every 80k miles than do a plastic one every 40k.
The metal impeller does not fail.
@@ginco_bnz why not just replace the impeller instead of the whole damp pump?
Man you did great! Really fixed the overheating, also added a lot of value to the car as a bonus..

Love to see your new videos! I love how good the shots and quality is, big support from Lituania!
i dont own a porsche yet, but that smile at 19.30 wants me to have it even more!
you're doing an amazing job!
Grtz from belgium!
A true Porsche enthusiast. Passion and joy.
From Volvo to Porsche... seems like we are following the same route! Can't want for more to follow 🤝
I drive an '09 V70 and '23 V60 in addition to my 99 Carrera. It's just the perfect combo.
So glad to see another project on the go. Such a nice car, getting the tlc it deserves. Excellent stuff!
VAG cars usually have a green coating on the bolts to try to minimize corrosion. That’s what you’re seeing.
Hell yea! I'm glad to see some sponsors on your channel. Keep up the great content!
Thank you! Definitely helps make it possible to put this kinda thing out consistently

great as always, my fav car youtuber, wish you good health and good luck

Thank you for the good content. Very pleasant to watch. Keep it up!

Congrats on the fix.
Nice to see a fellow Dutch (descent) Porsche enthusiast! Ga vooral zo door en veel plezierige en veilige kilometers toegewenst!👊🏾
Hell yeah man! Huge congrats on the Porsche!
Nice work man glad you got it sorted, those 3rd gear pulls were so good!! I know how frustrating this can be chasing coolant temps..well done!
I have an S60r and I watched your first v70r video. million subs coming soon for sure

It's almost therapeutic watching a Willem video.
Some day I'll pull up next to Willem in the Volvo S70 I been working on.
Great work again mate sounds epic 👍🏻. Only 1 mod you need to do is remove the back American overrides 😂

Great videos, joy to watch 🎉
gotta love the flat 6 howl when on the throttle
How satisfying to sort out the problem. Oh and thank you for using centigrade! Peace!
It tastes that way to discourage you drinking it. Not to find out how it tastes. 😂 Nice video man, looking forward to the next one in the series.
You figure out and repair that complicated Porsche engine yourself! Plus your photography skills! I must say you’re a genius! 👍
Working on Porsche stuff is not that complicated. Actually much more efficiently designed.
Would highly recommend a QuickJack - not just for the 996, but great in general. Cool vid!
always a pleasure to see your videos. so, the problem isn't fixed yet right?
Excellent success!

Good job man!!
Loving your content bro!
good call on factory mounts. i dabbled with other mounts on my 996 Targa and regretted it. harshness / vibration was indeed amplified
good stuff, car sounds amazing
While I disagree with removing the mufflers, props on getting the cooling fixed
the thermostat is upgrade that most 996 and 997 owners do to help prevent borescoring. i have it done to my 997 C2S. it def takes long to get oil temps up to normal but water temp isn't that bad

100$ exhaust ftw!! Sounds incredible. Surely some 996 merch soon?
Love the Porsche content
