Nice new project, if you email Porsche in Germany since you have done work for them, they will gladly give you the info you need to get to the root of the overheating problem, a friend of mine who lives in Germany and did work for them back in the early 2000's had issues with a Porsche he bought used a year later about the IMS bearing and the local Porsche dealer wouldn't help him in any way and got the info from Porsche just from sending an email to the division he did the work for and they recommended exactly what he needed to hear, maybe you could get the same if need be, i think you'll solve it without that, i know they pressure test to find out if the head gasket is weak or leaking, look forward to the next video 👍cars in greast condition for its age
996 is my favorite 911 generation, and yours is stunning! Recent porsche owner myself, bought a 944 a few months ago. It also has some very finicky cooling issues. Going off the fact that this is a flood title, I would really dial in the electrical aspect. Could be a short somewhere and the cooling fans aren't running. I'd also check the temp sensor(s), as they could be giving false readings to both the gauges but also the ecm. Good luck! Can't wait to see where this goes.
Was looking forward to the second video on this car. Early 996's run particularly hot. The fan resistors will probably not work very properly anymore. Trigger highspeed fan with the aircon button helps. Or install a proper switch to have fans at 100% speed wen you want it. Other maintenance, low temp thermostat so the thermostat opens earlier, new waterpump (with plastic impeller). The earokit bumper in combination with the skirts is really nice, makes it a bit a 996 T. Looking for a aerobumper myself for mine. Early 996 (the .1's aren't really prone to bore scoring (MY 1997-early 2000 ones), the do crack heads sometimes, also ims failure is rare on these, since it is dual row).
The coolant system is notoriously hard to bleed on these cars, maybe it's just not bled properly! Maybe the thermostat is faulty? I'd also recommend a head gasket tester from any car parts store - usually a blue liquid tank that turns yellow if there are any exhaust gasses in the cooling system. That's a pretty cheap and definitive way to find out if your cooling issues are caused by a head gasket or something else.
I worked alot in theede things and i couldnt agree more. Change the thermostat and bring the car to porsche to bleed the system. Most shops dont have the tools to bleed a 18l coolant system
Great car! I did a manual overwrite for the cooling fans. Added a little switch in the interior so I can control the engine temp myself on hot days. Did also the cleaning of the radiators, GT3 low temp thermostat, GT3 water pump, but in traffic it still gets warm (no overheating). Engine is rebuilt 5.000km ago, so engine is fine. I guess its just how the 996 is designed.
Change the water pump (they are considered a service item and ideally changed every 40k) and also install a low temperature thermostat. Then make sure you bleed the system properly, either with a vaccum tool or nose down & rear in the air method.
Congrats on the car ooking forward to see what you do to yours. I just got a 996 myself last month. A bit of a money pit but it has 116k miles on it, still best car I have ever owned. Diving into replacing my failed AOS and weak starter next week. Keep up the great videos!

I wish you good luck with the 996, I just crossed 160k miles on mine and it's still going strong. They can be reliable!
Great score! The next obvious step for the cooling issue will be to replace the thermostat, check the internal condition of the radiators and pipes, and vacuum bleed the system with the nose down. Good luck and congratulations!
Hey i own a 996 ! Great car really !! I recomend the cooling kit ( its a third cooler in rhe middle on the front ) that will major help to get cooling temps down ! Also a low temp Thermostat !! I got a Boxster of this generation last year and so far it has been decently easy to work on and a joy to drive. I am having the same overheating issue as you so I'm excited to see what can be done to improve the situation.
Great camera work on this one. Your oil pressure looks a bit low also, possibly needs a new sender as i saw it was quite delayed when you started the engine in your garage. Coolant probably needs bleeding or worst case put a couple of new rads in, at the least they'll increase your cooling by 5-10% and might be all you need. I've got a silver manual 98, and I've done some similar mods to mine. Including a 3d printed gt3 console delete which changes the look of the interior
Bought a 2001 C4 was doing the same thing. Took the bumper off and cleaned the debris like you did. Still just like you, ended up replacing the water pump, low temp gauge thermostat, radiator flush. Now stays around 180. Also my fans were doing the exact same thing. Before summer I'm just gonna replace the radiators also. Good luck, don't get worried but yous should start replas soon as possible.
I’m so here for this!!!! I have never owned a Volvo or Porsche I just love good auto content! The V70r brought me here and the stunning camera work kept me!
Valve timing check and timing check at manual RPM numbers. Coolant hoses look small coming off the radiators. That and the distance they travel could be an issue. Blockage inside the cooling jacket of the head (lost socket). Bad head gaskets. Caked on piston tops. Caked on combustion chambers in the heads. Leak in the heater hoses or coolant hoses. I would replace all coolant hoses to get the system back new again, without doubt. The old original radiators. New radiators work best after 80000 miles. Water pump blocked or not working. Adding an aftermarket oil cooler and new oil pressure gauge would help out a lot. That center radiator sounds like insurance on such a great car. Research this stuff.
Congrats, happy for you. Money pit or not, i kope to enjoy it as much as possible. Can’t wait to experience something like this in the future. Keep up the good work
Great work cleaning out those air ducts. Very satisfying. If the resistors didn’t cure the cooling issues, you should try and bleed the cooling system. Use new coolant (it probably needs it) and buy a vacuum bleeder if you don’t already have one. The flat six is notorious for retaining air and the vacuum bleeder is the only way. If that doesn’t help you need to check the Thermostate and the water pump. A good flush would also help. The car looks to be in excellent condition underneath. In Europe they look a lot different. 😅
for me, there must be a block somewhere or a half closed thermostat. personally I don't believe in air in the system because there's a safety valve (at least in 2000s VAG cars) in the coolant bottle, if there is air, there would be more pressure than the normal and that pressure exit through that valve. bold choice I must say. love it!
You know Willem not sure if you have one but a shop vac would be handy to have around to help vacuum that stuff out and really anything else you need to. I use one to vacuum out the car when cleaning.
I thought of one more thing. Using a bore scope you can rent from an autoparts store. Would help inspecting the cylinder walls for debris from the flood. Stuck on the the rings or against the piston itself.
First of all congratulations on obtaining your dream car at such a young age. Regarding the running hot issue I think draining the coolant and doing a vacuum assisted fill could possibly solve your issue. Another thing to check would be to verify the temperature gauge is accurate.

Not sure if you plan on addressing it in a future vid but I also have an aero kit 911 and they like to warm up in traffic and going slow up hills/mountains. My boxster S had the same issue with the radiator fans not coming on, but it took me forever to realize as the third radiator kept the car cool enough. Only discovered it while trying to diagnose an A/C issue. Consider adding a third radiator!
Loving the content! I love the Volvo content(recently purchased a Volvo 850 turbo with the manual swap), it was a great series. I cant wait for this Porsche series!!!.
If you have not checked yet, check the car with a scanner and see what is the actual temperature, the temps could be good, its just the gauge shows high. Mine coming close to the end of the 0 of 180 on a hot day, then the high speed fan would kick in. Plus I have 79C thermostat, 2 new radiators, new pump, new coolant with vacuum flush.
There was someone in my area years ago with the exact same car and color and it always sounded amazing and I was totally mesmerized by it. He had a really nice spoiler. Idk if it was the Gt-3 spoiler or what exactly. Have a pic of it somewhere on my old flip phone. This was in 2009 I think.

Link for the resistors? I didn't see the link posted love the v70r and now a 996. I'm getting a 996 targa soon as well, so this was a very handy video!
idk if this will fix the issue but it could help. Do a coolant flush on the car and get a coolant system cleaner. it might help it run cleaner coolant throughout the car. and because it was a flood title check the radiator for any bad liquids that is trapped in there.
Check the thermostat and radiator. Usually on old cars, the thermostat will open slowly or partially and the radiator may have mud like gunk below the core.
Might need a new thermostat and water pump, they’re a pretty common wear point too. Porsche sells a new water pump with a metal impeller that’s well worth it (the old plastic ones can break and hurt your engine). And a new water pump might help the car regulate temp faster
Had similar issues with mine took forever to bleed out the air with all that length of hose. Also, pull your water pump and inspect/replace because the stock ones have plastic impellers and they literally disintegrate the blades and don't move enough coolant. FCP Euro sells a full pump and thermostat kit for under $300
Thermostat, fluid flush using a pressurized bleeder. You may have an air lock or most likely bad thermostat. If you have lots of miles, do a new water pump while you’re in there.
I also have a 996 911 which had an overheating issue and it had bad fan resistors. Issue turned out to be a cracked head, so now getting an engine rebuild done. Hopefully yours isnt anything that serious.
great buy

@@wheelemverb nice, amazing project. im sure you ll fix the issue

Might need a new thermostat and water pump, they’re a pretty common wear point too. Porsche sells a new water pump with a metal impeller that’s well worth it (the old plastic ones can break and hurt your engine). And a new water pump might help the car regulate temp faster
been waiting for this one since you dropped the main channel video - congrats and welcome to the 996 gang!!
I didn’t even know he had another channel until you said this. Makes a lot of sense now why the production quality is so good 😂
can't wait for you next episodes.. love your content
Great video and you got the skills to fix this! I noticed the oil pressure sits low, only 0.5 bar at idle!?
I’m had work so I can’t watch right now but I’m just excited to see this upload😭
Hallo gratings from far Slovakia.I looking forward to new europian car series.By the way good choice Porsche is Porsche.
I wish you the best my man.
Had similar issues with mine took forever to bleed out the air with all that length of hose. Also, pull your water pump and inspect/replace because the stock ones have plastic impellers and they literally disintegrate the blades and don't move enough coolant. FCP Euro sells a full pump and thermostat kit for under $300
They can also come unglued from their spindle too with the impeller intact
@robtminnicanfu LoL I didn't know that. the bearing in mine let go and it puked iits guts all over haha
my dream porsche is a 930 turbo. one day i might have enough money for one. excited to see what you do with this one!
Congratulations on your new Porsche!!!
Benieuwd wat je met de 911 gaat doen, maar gaat vast tof worden!
Love to see where this channel is headed
It’s just air in the system, had the same problem with 981 Boxtser. Drain the whole system, raise the rear of the car then vacuum refill the system
Homie is living my dream - proud of you man!
Just came across this video/channel. Earned a sub! Congratulations on the car.
Also, sorry to be that guy, what did you shoot with at 8 mins?
Love the mighty car mods reference to "bought it sight unseen on the internet"
Thermostat, fluid flush using a pressurized bleeder. You may have an air lock or most likely bad thermostat. If you have lots of miles, do a new water pump while you’re in there.
congrats dude loved watching this
Thanks man!
I also have a 996 911 which had an overheating issue and it had bad fan resistors. Issue turned out to be a cracked head, so now getting an engine rebuild done. Hopefully yours isnt anything that serious.
Great video. Great editing. Great car.
Love the videos I’m curious to know is RUclips your full time job?
love your videos !! and great purchase!
When I saw your project with Porsche, I knew you'd get your own sooner or later.
Congratulations man! The car looks great!
