There are also rumors these were built on the production line at the same time as the 993 (at least the 98 build date cars). They are also incredibly light, IIRC just under 3000 pounds.
I have a very early 99 built in March 1998. It was built on the same line as the last of the 993s which were built through April 1998. The very first 996s were built in October 1997. There may be some January 1998 cars built for the USA, but it appears almost all were built starting in February 1998.
What a beautiful car. No crazy wings and other crap. You did the right thing by not butchering it. Some old guy like me would love this as a weekend cruiser at a reasonable cost.

You scored on that replacement engine looks like it was a factory replacement for a car with a failed IMS. Mileage will be less than reported for the car, upgraded bearing, etc. You’ve got yourself a nice car there now.
Love your vids , love Porsche, had a repair shop for over 30 years. Just wanted to tell you that the oversized IMS bearing from 05- 08 are replaceable without splitting the case. There is a tool that shaves the block a few mm to enable the bearing to be pulled out. I have that tool and used it a few times, works great
So then those style ims bearing that require your tool. Still have that same problem of grenadine. Seemed like everything was really good. Till you showed up with your correct tools and knowledge. LOL.
they do although they are not as prevalent to fail as the earlier ones. I have changed about a dozen of the newer ones and they all showed signs of excessive wear. BTW I closed my shop about 2 years ago but still have all the tools. I might be tempted to sell you the setup although you can rent them from EPS (european parts solution) they also sell the roller bearing which I believe is a much better solution than others that i have tried on hundreds of vehicles. I specialized in Porsche only and the roller bearing from EPS was the only one that II never had problems with.
Just park the car at a slant with the nose up so the IMS bearing is not submerged in engine oil while parked and oil doesn't run into and get trapped inside the IMS and eventually turns acidic and washes out the bearing lubricant.
I like your idea lol, however the Porsche engineers thought of that and put seals on both sides of the bearing so that just enough oil gets in to wash out any grease but not enough to actually lubricate it. , after all it was supposed to be a "lifetime" bearing
@Harryrcb I've taken many m96 and m97 engines apart and when changing IMS bearing always found rather bad smelling acidic oil inside the IMS. The IMS bearing would mostly go bad on garage queens, not on daily drivers or even cars that were tracked. Cars parked for weeks at a time i figure will accumulate more oil inside the shaft to go bad and wash the lubricants out of the bearing.
Nice having it in one video. Never would have changed the wheels though - makes it look like a proper heap which I'd immediately scroll past if I was looking to buy. There used to be a ton of them, with. thedodgy gt3 bodykits and those wheels, and they all looked really cheap. Fried egg 996 should play to its strenghts.
I honestly think the original steering wheel looked better. Just needed a recover around the wheel itself. The one you swapped it for with all the air bag lines on looked pretty rough.
Agreed. The new one gave it thar look like when someone swaps old seats out but a different colour. I had a 944 like that. Black interior but someone put tan seats in it. I hated it.

Super excited for this build. You got an amazing deal! The underbody looks really good, and has not corrosion, that is what the best of them look like at this point. Just needs a dry ice cleaning.
This video is the first I have ever seen from you and an instant subscribe. Not dicing this up into 20 episodes, a 6 month break and a “what happened to the (project name here) car?” Video before finishing it 10 episodes later is so refreshing. Love this.

Those are legendary wheels in their own right and they fit the car. Also I don't share your hatred for the four spoke, remember the steering wheel on the first 911?
You should use a safety strut on the back of the 911 when raised on the 2-post lift. Also make sure if the lift has a pair of longer arms and a pair of shorter arms, the back end (heavy end) of the car is lifted by the short arms. Typically this involves backing up the car on the lift.
Loved watching this! My speed yellow ‘99 had the same kind of failure. I opted to get it rebuilt into a Hartech/SRD 3.7. It’s still a couple days away from being completed, but this video gave me my 996 fix for now.
Another great video! I usually watch RUclips videos late at night and usually pause them, go to sleep and watch the rest another day. With ScrapLife videos, I just can't do that, I HAVE to watch them to the end!! Looking forward to the adventures in 2024, have a good New Year everyone ❤👍
TOTAL WIN! Love your videos! Straight up shop talk and common sense. The smoky exhaust on the right side (from the left bank) was a hint to the #2 cilinder crack when it goes on the lift. Great job!!
The ticking sound of the "new" engine, combined with smoke out of one exhaust looks like a cylinder liner failure about to happen. "Kolbenkipper" we call it in Germany, when the piston has worn out the cylinder to an oval shape and can get stuck while moving. Was really noticable on my Targa after 230.000km with the original, unopened engine. Sadly, the ticking got so loud that it was better not to drive it any further. It did still feel and run well, but there was a chance of catastrophic engine failure at every run, and you don't want that on the Autobahn at 280km/h. So it had to go, its parts will help other 996 live on now.
It’s a win all the way. 😀 best outcome all round. Great result. Looking forward to more great content for 2024. Happy New Year to the team at Scraplife 🎉

Lee, Great work, love the channel. One thing you could do to make the interior look better and was a Porsche option is the paint the center console the exterior color. That would make the wheel a little more at home and it doesn't cost much at all.
Nice rescue! If any car deserves a rescue, it's a 996. Take it from me. But for the record, there is NO such thing as a cheap Porsche if you want it to perform at 100% the moment you press the gas.
The four rubber grommets in the frame behind the airbag are squished and need to be replaced to keep the horn from going off unintentionally. My 99 had the same issue. I bought a new frame with the grommets from Porsche.
I bought my 2000 996 pre-Covid for slightly more - silver with black interior, 6 speed short shift kit, IMS bearing done, white dials, had some front bumper damage, and some interior wear & tear. I could have spent double on a "nicer" one, but I've done very light work - traded rims, duck tail, sport steering wheel, sport exhaust, intake and some other engine tweaks. I've done brakes and will do some suspension work. It is an outlaw and I do auto cross, have taken it out to Laguna Seca and drive it to work and on weekends. It's an incredible car and SO much fun to drive, especially on back roads, yet I've shown it at Monterey Car Week, Werks and local car shows. It's my modern taken on an '73 RS tribute! I love everything about it. It's easily more than doubled in value! The only thing I regret is not buying a turbo since they cost so much more these days. But this is a sleeper classic. Not the fastest, but sub 6 seconds 0-60. The drive, though.....the drive...and the sound!!!
The 996.1 is a superb car! With a good exhaust one of the nicest sounding too. Other faster, more expensive cars have come and gone, including a 911 Turbo, but my 996.1 has stayed with me for over 12 years now 👌🏻 I've had almost no issues with it in that time, it's currently at about 130k miles and drives perfectly.
I jave the dame car almost identical. I put a custom paint on mine . I have had one problem a crank sensor. No other problems. And it only has 79,000 miles only one tune up. Runs great. Thanks for video. Take care of the car it will not let you down.
Actually this projects are much much more expensive cos they never taking into account the time and work spent on this restorations...but if considering how much they earn via You Tube views and algorithms they are far better off....
I know many hate the 996 but I consider it a necessary step in the evolution of the 911 before the 997 chassis. I have a 2002 996.2 and with the 3.6 liter M96 rated at 320hp the car feels like it makes a touch more. On the scales it weighed in just under 2900 pounds, a smidge heavier than my Son’s VW Corrado SLC. I’m happy to see you saved it without swapping in an LS. I know it’s not cheap to save these cars. But I love the character of the M96. I love the brute force torque delivery of the LS - (I also own a 2000’ Pontiac FireHawk Trans-Am) but I think the M96 is a great little motor when the idiotic engineering choices are fixed on it. The later model M96 doesn’t allow you to replace the ims the way it is on the 98’ to 04’ versions, no thanks to the lip in the case, but those 05’+ engines aren’t known for having those issues. Popping the seal on the ims was the right thing to do. The only issues the 05’ + engines have is bore score which is less catastrophic in that you can still use the engine case, just needs sleeves. I sub’d you guys did a great job man, and after a. I’ve detail you’ll have a great daily. These cars are awesome for daily use.
You heard wrong. The saying goes like this: "There is no such thing as a budget Porsche, only a budget FOR a Porsche." And PORSCHE stands for Plenty Of Racing Should Cause Heavy Expenditure. If I told you how much I spent on my 928 over 12 years of ownership, you would not believe me. The newest information about the IMS bearing is as follows: The reason it can fail is due to drivers failing to drive aggressively enough when going hills. If you allow the car to stay in a high gear, with low revs while driving up a hill, the bearing can fail eventually. But if you change down a gear, raise the revs higher than the automatic would normally, then your IMS will never fail. Period. Edit: Great to see you got the full leather package with the leather covered binnacle. The base level trim is... basic, and if you cover the Porsche logo on the wheel with your hand, it feels like you are sitting in a cheap Lexus from the 90s. Nice buy. 31:40 - Yep. 95% of all engine damage occurs in the first 15 seconds after startup - but only about 9 seconds for a 996 - because it's a horizontal motor and oil pressure reaches the heads much quicker. But another 4% of damage takes place before the engine warms to normal. So, keeping a 996 under 3,500 rpm when cold is a tremendously good idea. God job.
First off im happy you kept the porsche original and not ls swapped.. When it comes to ur new motors lines being cut, when ordering stuff from a salvage yard we expect that the client has all the lines they need ready being that u disconnected everything from the motor side when u removed it from the vehicle.. as a salvage yard tech we cut all hoses to get the motor out as fast as possible and also with the expectation that the client has all lines replaced or waiting when installing the motor. You can’t expect perfect from a salvage yard motor.
A early at any price is a win. I admit I'm biased owning a 1997 996 3.4 manual with 225k KM with a new gearbox, and a new 2021 997 AT engine with only 15k km. A manual early cable driven 996 is the most fun for any money. It's pure driving pleasure. Enjoy!!!
This channel is so underrated but better than many other channels with million of subs! You totally nailed it! I watch full your videos till the end. Great job!
FYI, When doing a rear engine/front mounted radiator engine car. A Vacuum should be pulled to ensure there is no air in the system, if not there will always be issues.
I think the steering wheel swap was worth it. The old wheel reminds me of early airbag wheels in mid to late 90’s fords, like the mustang, ranger, explorer, etc…
I’m just super happy another person went from thinking those were the worst ones to saying “wow I’m genuinely impressed” I’m a early 90s baby and for oddly enough for some reason I’ve always loved the 996 gen aside from some cool and bada new cars the 996 is definitely my favorite model. Shape. Size. 90s retro style. Borderline analog. It’s just right.
Good content Lee. I have to agree with some of the other posters, it's a better looking Porsche than many of the late model ones. Perfect car for a beginner Porsche owner.
Just an observation, but I think the alternator on the good used engine you bought is for an automatic transmission, because the pulley has a built in clutch. The alternator pulley on the bad engine you pulled out is for a manual transmission and is a standard pulley without clutch. The C5 Corvette is the same way. Clutch on the automatic transmission alternator pulley, no clutch on the 6 speed pulley.
Love the subject, I think everyone loves the bragging rights that big hp brings but this model is a nice drivers car that loves back twisties and you have to keep on it to get the best which keeps you involved

That replacement engine started playing the Mortal Kombat theme when they were turning it over for the first time... I was looking for Raiden to lightning bolt onto the screen.
Love this 911 Carrera car you bought, how got a great used engine. For a daily driver car under $15,000 and how the car looks, I think it's great. Great explanation & a lot of good work from your and your team. Congrats 🎉
That was massively entertaining. Seeing the colour of that oil coming out of the Porka was the stuff of nightmares. You did an amazing job sorting the car though, well done 👍👍

Other faster, more expensive cars have come and gone, including a 911 Turbo, but my 996.1 has stayed with me for over 12 years now 👌🏻
I've had almost no issues with it in that time, it's currently at about 130k miles and drives perfectly.
Gotta say, I preferred the full matching tan interior inc tan steering wheel
I jave the dame car almost identical. I put a custom paint on mine . I have had one problem a crank sensor. No other problems. And it only has 79,000 miles only one tune up. Runs great. Thanks for video. Take care of the car it will not let you down.
Prefer the standard wheels
Nasty. The Boxster and 996 marked the point when Porsches just became another VAG style product - a veneer of quality but not much else.
yup, built to lease
The wheel change was a perfect touch. IMO a black shifter boot and metal shift knob would be great upgrades.
You heard wrong. The saying goes like this: "There is no such thing as a budget Porsche, only a budget FOR a Porsche."
And PORSCHE stands for Plenty Of Racing Should Cause Heavy Expenditure.
This just proves that It takes more than an interesting car to make a good RUclips video.
911 for less than $20K is a win to me. And the interior looked pretty clean.
Great job!
the more I watch videos like this, the more I appreciate cars that are just simple :D
Lot of people missing out on this channel!!!
Total win, for the price of a used Honda you have a kick-ass Porsche 911 with racing wheels.
You remind me a lot of the LR Time couple in that you hit these projects with this absolutely infectious enthusiasm. I am definitely a fan.
Dude im so glad you stayed with your plan and so the engine with budget, best choice!
I was drinking coffee while watching the oil mixture. It was the same color as what I was drinking.
6k is a steal , when you have a 8-10k budget on a car ,this right here is the holy grail
what the heck, you did this whole thing in one video, that's amazing.
Just bought a 996 High Milage 1999. Thank you for this video was very informative on how to drop the engine!
Sweet find! The original wheels look better in my opinion.
Subs to watch ratio is CLEEEEEAN! Congrats yall. Keep making monster content!
That car was lucky to get you ❤, you saved it from being free trashed
FYI, When doing a rear engine/front mounted radiator engine car. A Vacuum should be pulled to ensure there is no air in the system, if not there will always be issues.
First time watcher. Great video. No fluff. Affordable car Achievable result.. Very watchable.
I think the steering wheel swap was worth it. The old wheel reminds me of early airbag wheels in mid to late 90’s fords, like the mustang, ranger, explorer, etc…
Gah that thing is clean. I feel you that tan interior isn’t your thing, but the black/tan combo on this car is just the business.
That was a lot of fun! Thanks!
Thank you for not doing ANOTHER LS swapped Porsche. Great video.
Should've K20 or K24 swapped it. Tuning by Nick seems to be coming out with a Good all you need kit.
I like the look of the old wheels better
really loves this series, imagine fixing a porsche at a reasonable price to enjoy the drive.
It’s just right.
soon as I saw the high oil pressure I knew what was wrong lol. 996 oil pressure maps ~1:1 with RPM - 1k rpm = 1 bar, 2k rpm = 2 bar etc
Good content Lee. I have to agree with some of the other posters, it's a better looking Porsche than many of the late model ones. Perfect car for a beginner Porsche owner.
Wow. One video of an entire rebuild. Absolutely subscribed right away.
4:20 me after three cups of coffee
Just an observation, but I think the alternator on the good used engine you bought is for an automatic transmission, because the pulley has a built in clutch. The alternator pulley on the bad engine you pulled out is for a manual transmission and is a standard pulley without clutch.
The C5 Corvette is the same way. Clutch on the automatic transmission alternator pulley, no clutch on the 6 speed pulley.
any used sports car == plan on taking engine out
also, if there's a problem, it's always the most expensive option
Love the subject, I think everyone loves the bragging rights that big hp brings but this model is a nice drivers car that loves back twisties and you have to keep on it to get the best which keeps you involved
This was actually such a good video, I barely know anything besides engines and this taught me a lot.
I've had 3 Porsches and based on my experience....It's a Win! And perhaps a little luck too!
The most iconic wheels for a Porsche will always be Fuchs. But the BBS are really nice, too!
Fuchs just don’t look great on a 996 gen or newer, absolutely gorgeous on older cars though. I prefer the Turbo Twists the 996 came with.
I prefer this style. Slab sides no crazy curves and just wide enough interior
You guys are superb at what you do ,not just the excellent video production, which is the highest grade and super professional, also the engineering knowledge you relay to the viewer is of immense value . All the best from Normandie 🇫🇷 France.
That replacement engine started playing the Mortal Kombat theme when they were turning it over for the first time... I was looking for Raiden to lightning bolt onto the screen.
Great episode. I'd ditch the racing wheels. Originals look better. Spend the money getting the spoiler moving properly.
If you’re a 911 guy you know the 99 996 is special
Prefer the stock wheels. Basically a crime to swap those. Spending money on steering wheel in this instance should be reported to Hague as a possible crime against reason. Otherwise cool video Yo.
Favorite channel. It's that simple. 🤷♂️
bless you for not doing an LS swap. LS swapping a Porsche is an abomination
I’m binge watching your channel I’m in love NO HOMO
