Love your videos 🤩. Have a ‘06 Volvo XC90 T5 myself. Volvo has «black holes» in service routines as «optional». So if customer does not Ask for these options they will never be done: oilchange for transmission, servo, break fluid, coolant haldex (oil filter oil and haldex pump) so when you serve the Haldex, clean with electric cleaner aerosol inside the haldex electric pump motor. Al lot of black Carbon dust from the worn brushes. Check the brushes also if they are in need of replacement. I can see the Volvo has a towing connection. Check if the transmission got an extra external oil cooler for the transmission before use the car for towing heavy trailers. The original cooler for transmission is a liquid to liquid exhange cooler in the sump of the motor, and that is just not enough delta T for towing heavy trailer, or active sporty driving going through the gears all the time. Greeting from Oslo Norway
@@schrodingerscat8621Yes, when you drive it with alot of low end exeleration especially 0-60 pulls the torque can destroy the anglegear, but it happens more on manual cars because of torque spikes. Also the automatic cars had less torque over all (Automatic:350nm/Manual 400nm).
So glad I found your channel, as a fellow Volvo "restorer". I'm on #15 now and just love giving them new life and keeping them on the road. Can't wait to see where this project goes.
A good thing to do is to replace the oil in the angle gearbox and do a haldex service and clean the filter in the haldex unit. Thats often the cause of the fault code you have.
Wow, what an incredible success in getting the transmission fixed! I'm genuinely thrilled to have stumbled upon this channel. Kudos to you for choosing the Volvo V70 R as your project-it's fantastic to witness someone caring for the classic motorization. Count me in as a follower! Keep the content coming!
I had a 03 Flash Green V70R that I bought new in Germany when I was stationed there. I was supposed to pick it up from the factory in Sweden, but the Iraq War began and I was deployed overseas. When I got back, the car was at my local Volvo dealership, and myself, and the dealership employees were very impressed with the R. I modded the R pretty extensively, to include chipping the ECU. My base was near the Nurburgring racetrack, so I ran some laps there. In Germany I frequently drove on the autobahn, hitting the 155 speed limiter several times a week. My family and I returned to the US in 05, and as much as I loved the car, I ended up selling it. Driving in the US was frustrating, as the speed limits are low, and drivers hang out in the left lane, unlike Europe. Also, gas was $4 a gallon, and the chipped motor required hi-test. Also, the US roads are poorly maintained, so my lowered springs didn't help matters. Love your video! Brings back great R memories.
Man I just love this series Willem, great work! Came here from your film photo channel, but as a Volvo owner myself this one was a no-brainer. Can't wait for the next episode. Cheers from Sweden!
Weeks ago, RUclips recommended one of your videos and since that day I subscribed to your channel. Love your videos and the style. Always loved V70s but never owned one, because lack of power and no AWD. Didn`t know that the R version exists and now I figured out that they are quite rare over here in Germany. And somewhat expensive. But there are some nice ones in the US... Looks like a V70 R will be one of my next projects... Cheers, Chris
I just finished doing a whole front suspension replacement and the difference it makes really was worth it. Took us 2 days but no more rattle. Haldex service is next.
BTW your salvage s60 was manual right? You could manual swap the V. Id be down to watch that video because ill go that route next summer with a salvage car as well.
Nice man! My 06 xc70 OR has the entire front suspension apart right now as I am in process of doing it as well 😂. Will be ordering the rear shocks for next week too
so glad i found your channel. i share a c30 t5 with my dad at the moment and seeing you bring what was gonna be a pile of junk back to life is amazing. such a well documented process and excellent video! nicely done
Just stumbled upon your channel. Love the format and presentation, and I am learning a ton of stuff that I can use for my XC70 D5 2007. Looking forward to seeing this channel grow! Cheers from Iceland
That is wonderful. It is amazing what fresh engine oil and transmission fluid can do for an automobile. I am happy for you. You got a great buy and it's exterior is immaculate. Enjoy!
These Haldex systems are often overlooked when it comes to service. I have an 9-3 Aero XWD, which is Haldex Gen 4 and the most common thing that leads to failure is no one ever changes the diff fluid and filter. In my experience, as long as it's serviced to schedule, it can last. In fact, the Volvo fluid is an OE replacement for the Haldex system used in the 9-3 and NG 9-5.
I really like the inclusion of little tips and tricks throughout the processes in this video. Would love to know more about the researching process to figure certain things out. Really interesting videos, Willem!
Can't watch right away, but just stopped by to say that's awesome! A cheap diy fix to a potentially expensive repair is the best Christmas present a car guy can get
Nicely done! You'll for sure be wanting to change the fluids in the AWD system too (Haldex fluid and rear diff oil) to make sure the system lasts. My R had the same milage and the fluid smelled awful so it's definitely worth checking out.
Change the Haldex oil , then run it for a month , then change it again. Especially if you cannot see when the last time was. I drove an ex Police one in the UK . Phenomenal, it was made to Volvo cop specification which has quite a few suspension upgrades. Kept up with virtually everything on the roads and handlingwas great the correct tires. I am told the Police were disappointed when they no longer had them .
8:13 oh boy this unlocked some memories Had an 05 VR with 6MT. I loved that car, but nothing makes your blood run cold like that little warning light turning red. Your short pull at the end of the video was pretty nostalgic too, what a great sound those cars make.
Love these videos. Beautifully shot, and sum up the satisfaction of doing these jobs, which are all pretty simple on these V70R. I wish your videos were around 2 years ago when I was going through the same journey. Having just finished a fairly significant overhaul of the front and rear suspension, you’re in for a treat when that’s done. I’d highly recommend the sub frame inserts on the front. One of the best mods on mine for about £25, which made a big difference to the front end feel.
Just found this channel recently. Really like your content man. I had an S60R w/ spaceball in my freshman year of college a decade ago and sold it because I was scared of it blowing up lol but might start looking for a VR.
I did the same with my V70. Transmission was shifting poorly and drained and filled with Vavoline MaxLife ATF twice. It was good for year and 3k miles, and I did it again but added Lucas Transmission fix this time. Shifts are back to normal now. Good to know about Castro Transmax! That turbo sounds amazing on your car!
Nice! I have a 2005 V70 2.5t and did the same flush. Made a huge difference. I still run into an issue when I’ve been driving it for a long trip and I shift from park to drive; it will clunk loudly into drive. I guess I’ll do another flush session. Mine is just a few hundred miles shy of 300.000! Great video!
A trick for those stuck aluminum drain plug washers is to use some side cutters and cut towards the center. You likely won't be able to cut through it, just deform it a bit, but if you do this in a few spots what happens is the washer actually increases in diameter a bit from being deformed then you can just pull it off or unthread it like you did.
Next time you do the transmission, just flush it using the oil cooler line. It's faster than using the plug. That's what I do on my V70. Last time it took about 20 quarts and 7 flushes, but I got it looking perfectly new.
A quick and time saving tip when doing transmission is always open the fill plug first, if it dosent come loose, atleast you still have oil in the gearbox and not a empty one.
Nice work with the transmission fluid change and the TCM adaptation! As for the all-wheel drive coming back when you cleared the code(s), this will give you a chance to start fresh in pinning down whatever triggered the code in the first place. The pressure sensor is mounted on the DEM, as is the AOC solenoid. There is also a pump plugged into the DEM that mounts to the AOC. Keep an eye out for any DEM related codes that reappear, because when that pump begins to die, it often kills the DEM along with it. If the pump is failing, you'll want to replace it before that happens. You're probably already familiar with Swedespeed. The R Forum has a wealth of accumulated knowledge on these cars. Congratulations on getting this one for such a great price!
hey, just discovered your channel. it is great to see someone about my age doing something i would, not as well as you obviously. you gained a subscriber keep it up please
A volvo Auto gear box just gets better and better the more you change the fluid. Never heard of anyone's breaking down unless it's been like 30k miles without any kind of new lubrication
If you still have your old oil, why not send a sample for analysis to Blackstone Labs? Well worth it to establish the health or otherwise of your engine.
damn such a nice video man ill be watching fs i have a v50 volvo myself a 2006 one and ik its slow and all but i wanna try some mods when im older maybe too so thx dont stop posting man
My mother had an xc70. Fantastic car when it worked right, which wasn't very often. The trans was so messed up, not really an internal issue but instead a computer issue. Had great torque and super practical but man was it like walking on eggshells when driving it.
Nice work! Will say for others though, when doing ATF on an older car with no history on a transmission you intend to keep, it’s best to just put in as much as you take out and leave it. Flushing, as you know, is dangerous in some older ones because the newer fluid will have a fresher detergent and will knock loose dirt into the fluid channels, causing a failure. By only draining and filling once you leave enough old fluid in there that it won’t hurt anything.
Well done 🙂 You were lucky about the DEM. Usually a fuse is blown or worse the DEM needs repair. Remember that the oil in the rear diff (Lifetime according to Volvo) needs an 'replace' as well. If you wanna do it perfect, replace the filter for the Haldex as well. That can be somewhat of a challenge (At least with my D5) but it is worth it. I subscribed 🙂
Our family has a powerful 10-valve ``torque monster'' V70 Mk1 freethrottle and V70 Mk2 Bifuel and V70 AFV 2.5. Bifuel. We 330,000km/17 years. All good but MK1 DAS Auto in old union guys but this Mk 2 is a really good car of course. Very quiet and pleasant to drive. In addition, a very handsome cart from which, with a little tweaking, you can get a very neat ``horse'', just like you car it. Really nice and not terribly expensive and you can get all the parts at a reasonable price. At least in the 2006 model, the throttle valve is problematic after about 200,000, i.e. replaceable. I don't know if the issue has been addressed in any model year in the model history of the car. If the radiator is original, I recommend replacing it or at least testing the cooling system because the oil in the automatic transmission runs in the radiator and the transmission oil can mix with the coolant because they are in the same housing, which destroys the gearbox. Good video!
Congratulations!👏 Changing fluid regularly on an automatic transmission is very important especially on an AWD car! I do it also regularly on my 200 000 mi BMW 5 serie Xdrive!👍
The best way to do a drain and fill to flush it is to drain and fill and drive it for a few hundred miles or like a week and then do it again and see if it makes it better or worse
Great fix. As guys already mentioned on Haldex you need to replace the filter, Haldes oil and take off the pump and clean the mesh filter on the pump itself. Can guarantee it is clogged with gunk.
I bought my first volvo almost a year ago. 2001 xc70 2.4t manual. Gotta say, Had my opinions all over the place, since I bought it really let down. I changed all the shocks, brakes, pads, oils, plugs, PCV, got a decent set of memory heated seats and door cards. Did a lot of stuff to make it great again. not quite there yet. But it surely is a comfortable and capable car. I had my priorities, I needed a van, that sits high, has a good petrol engine, and doesnt rust. Volvo came to rescue. Since i live in a country where salt covers the roads for atleast 5 months a year, cars really take a beating. But im really starting to fall in love with the car, Every car I own I become highly educated on the inner workings of it, I have to, since I fix my cars myself. Anyways, Its a great car, even though sometimes makes you wanna burn it to the ground.
Nice Job! You Should also check the Haldex Fluid for the AWD System and do a flush + filters
Doing that soon for sure :)
