@@Secretlyanothername Corolla is not a sportscar. Even GRFour isnt exactly one. GR86 is a sportscar. Having said that, anything else than SUV is all people need. Wagon Corolla with awd from GRFour would be everything 90% of people in US need, but they ruined the market by buying SUVs and Pickups, on top of idiotic law that punishes cars and enabled SUVs and Pickups with stupid loopholes, when it should be other way around.
Love it, as a Colorado native there is nothing better than a 911 with skis mounted on the rack and winding mountain roads…on a practical note I also love my land Cruiser….great content!
I really enjoyed this video Alex! (I have the exact same car - interior and exterior.) You provided a VERY honest review of the car in snow, especially with the discussion of the primitive viscous AWD system and not being afraid of showing it getting stuck in deep/slippery snow. More 996 and cross-country touring videos please!
For the last 13 years I have driven my 911 4S (daily driver) a few times a year to Northern Canada. Conditions can get very challenging (-40C, with whiteouts and lots of snow and ice on the roads). With proper tires (don't use the often suggested Pirellis ...), the stock car is capable of getting us there year after year, even in the worst of storms. What a great car ... giving us unforgettable experiences week after week, year after year, and hopefully decade after decade. :)
@@siegfriedbarfuss9379 Nokian were the best ones I had, especially the studded ones. The next best is Michelins. Of course ... this is my perspective ... but I purchased after carefully reviewing various tests and reports. Today I have Michelins because the workplace parking no longer allows studded tires and my other Nokians are no longer produced in the sizes fitting my winter 911. I tried many other tires and I am quite happy with my current setup considering the restrictions.
@@siegfriedbarfuss9379 Excuse the delay, it was unintentional. Long story short, here are the tires I prefer in order of preference: 1- Nokian studded winter tires: simply the best 2- Nokian Hakkapeliitta (non-studded) winter tires: very good on ice and snow, fair in slush and not so good in water 3- Michelin Alpin winter tires: good in snow, slush, water and ok on ice
I drove a hardtop Boxster through one Midwest Winter. When I sold it and bought my 964 C4, the seller had snow tires on the 964, and didn't hesitate to use it in the winter. Drove the 964 through one blizzard and it wasn't phased.
This is rad. Best snow car I ever had was a Civic EK Hatch with adjustable coil overs (that I'd lift in the winter 😆) and some 15" steelies. Small front or AWD cars with a manual (and a bit of skill) will pull ya 95% of where you need to go.
Epic trip and great job editing. I feel like a lot of youtubers would have turned this into a minimum 45 minute video and would have lost a lot of engagement because of it. Subscribed
I've spoken with Alex before, stand-up guy and enthusiast. Definitely buy with confidence from Glen Shelly, I missed out on an E46 M3 a few years ago that I still kick myself about. Winter tires are must out there, make all the difference.
Fantastic video, and what's better, that is a high mileage 996 being driven very hard, in very hard conditions. The countless hours of engineering and testing is very evident in Porsche's engineering .... Brilliant!!!!
This is what I’d do if I had a 996, and what I’ll do when I eventually get one. I drove through the worst winter storm in Colorado this year from Denver back to Kansas in my 2000 volvo V70 so I know how treacherous the conditions can be. I’m honestly surprised my car could make it through at all, and I’m sure the 996 would be more fun because it isn’t a heavy FWD station wagon lol
I seriously considered getting a 996 4 for this application- Until the GR Corolla was announced. IMO the GRC is a great fast car & slightly more practical for a road trips with a real sleeping platform. FYI - I traveled a with my 993 & 07 GT3 so I now know more of what I like and want👍 I have yet to drive the GRC in light snow - but can't wait. I swapped the Pilot sports with some Ultra high performance all season tires (Continental Extreme Contact DWS06 Plus) in a talerl & narrower configuration than stock. With these I will have a little better chance of negotiating light snow (which was my intention-:)
This video is exactly what I've been trying to figure out about the 911 all wheel drive. I'm in Syracuse, NY and want a 4 of some kind to daily drive but people always look at me like I'm bonkers when I tell them I plan to drive it in snow. Great video, great walkthrough on the kit and experience. Couldn't mash subscribe fast enough.
I live in Buffalo and I’m 100% planning on having something similar to this lol. Everyone around here has a TRD Pro 4 Runner or a V6 Bronco….while this is definitely more my speed. Unless you’re going skiing/snowboarding or pulling a trailer, good snow tires on any car is all you will ever need, even in Buffalo/Syracuse.
Very cool trip! The one thing that really would have helped is chains for your tyres. That would allow the AWD to be more effective even though there's not much weight over the front wheels. Frankly, I think the car would really benefit from being raised a bit as the extra suspension travel would allow you to carry some more speed over the rough terrain, but chains would be the cheap and easy fix!
Doubt you could fit any, without risking damage to the car, which is for sale. Even the low-profile ones. The car is definitely not designed for chains.
I really hope to one day own a 996 C4S. It's my attainable dream car. I just hope the values stay depressed long enough for me to get the money together.
When the car got stuck, it appeared the front wheels were not spinning. It could be the wheel you could not see was putting power down but there was no snow flying out from that corner. I would have thought the quatro system would have nearly instantly sent power to the front and, if necessary, send power to both front wheels. Interesting.
With the exception of the playing in the snow in the desert, do you think a C2 would fare well taking the same trip? It seems like the AWD (C4) would be on the "nice to have" list, but probably not necessary. What do you guys think?
With the right tires, we would have had no problem whatsoever. Last winter I drove a 996.1 Aerokit with the LSD and was a god among mortals with proper snow tires. I even got caught out in a 997 with performance summer tires and survived a few light storms no problem.
@@lifestooshortforboringcars Good to know! When I was a new driver back in the early '70's, my buddy had a VW bug. That car would go anywhere in the snow, no problem. The rear engine and skinny snow tires were a great combination.
I got 991.2 GT3 manual which is one of most amazing cars I know but I still got appetite to get one of 996s as they are bargain less digital cool cars. This video only proof that.
Great vid! What size tires/wheels/spacers are you running? My C4S has been parked in the winters but this inspired me to get a winter set up for it! Thanks!
You don’t need an suv or awd/4wd. Good snow tires is far and away the most important. There’s a dude in Buffalo who drives a 2011 1 series M in the winter….and all he has is Blizzaks and he gets around just fine. I asked him why he drives a rare car in brutal winters and he told me he has another one in the garage lol.
I bought my red 2004 C4S cab from Glen Shelley in 2017. I drove the crap out of it in Colorado and Utah. I just sold it for a 2017, I am to scared to drive the new one like I did that one. Will have to get anther.
The spec is so special, which silver is it? Polar or Arctic? Maybe it’s the colour grading on the video or the OZ wheels (would love the model as well) but it’s just beautiful.
Question: My 1991 C4 has a prominent switch right above the gear shifter to lock the differentials. Yes, true 4 wheel drive locked diffs in a 911! Did they keep this feature in the 996 C4?

totally agree. great video.
Nice seeing a 911 stuck in the snow and being used properly! Good work, Alex.

What does "being used properly" mean? Technically a 911 used properly would be a track or some dry mountain roads lmao, but this is cool though.
