You forgot to say that the reason the front bumper vents are blocked off are because this is the Circuit Edition and the high mount (and AWESOME) rear spoiler creates so much downforce that the front end got light in Toyota's testing with the front vents open (as they are in the other 2 trims). Releasing a new bumper just for Circuit to delete the vents would've been cost prohibitive so they were blocked off instead. We now live in a world where BMWs have fake aero for looks and Toyotas do for need . I have a 2024 Circuit as well (white). Enjoy yours and keep making your awesome content, bud!
Actually the front vents ARE functional, but when paired with the Circuit Edition wing were found to cause instability at high speeds so Toyota installed a plug. You can actually remove the plugs, they're just held there with double sided tape. (Supposedly this issue was fixed for the 24 model so why the plug is still there on the 24 is a bit of a mystery)
@engineeringexplained the Vent is fully functional for the air curtain on your 2024. The plate was installed at port in the US/Canada, because no one informed them of the changes…. The exit directing the air in the wheel well was changed for 2024 to address the instability , so do yourself a favor and remove the plate :)
The 2024 changed the duct shape, but that isn't tied to why the plugs are still there - it's to balance the downforce on the front end to match the wing that's on the Circuit. None of the other trims came with the wing, so they had the vents open. The way Toyota sells the wing and plug kit as an accessory in Japan backs this - they're referred to as "downforce balancers".
I don't know, I took mine out and have had the car over 135mph roughly 217kmph and noticed no difference in noise or stability. Very objective I know 😂
@@boknows9333 I'm guessing it's nothing that would cause a problem, but Toyota wouldn't have bothered spending money on making and installing extra parts on cars if there wasn't a purpose. It's probably a minor difference in feel for the front end that the wing caused, and they wanted to neutralize it.
I have the same one. Blue Flame and all. Honestly, it's really validating to see you get the same car haha. Congrats! Mine is seeing its fifth track event this weekend and it's been a dream to drive both on track and commuting to work. Welcome to the GRC club!
The 2016-18 focus rs has the same system, but it replaces the single drive shaft clutch with 2 clutches on the axles. 1 for each rear tire with a bevel box in between. No differential required! Both the focus and the gr corrolla are magic to drive.

Exactly the car I would want! Jason, I would like to hear your take on the overheating rear differential situation. This is also the funniest video you have ever made, AWESOME, love it!
The front bumper side vents are functional on the Core model. It was blocked on the Circuit due to the rear spoiler causing the front to lift with the open front vents.

Congrats on your new GR Corolla!! And that is a fantastic color! You can’t underestimate the value of having your car in a color you love. I’ve usually had to compromise on color, which I don’t like doing, but once in a while it has worked out.
What the engineers mean when they say they don't see any negative consequences from intake buildup is that it doesn't cause warranty issues, it obviously causes problems down the road, but that's not an issue for them. Dual injection is pretty much the optimal solution as it gets you the efficiency gains of DI with the self-cleaning of port injection, for the cost of a little bit of complexity and a few more parts.
That’s how I feel, but I keep asking and they keep saying the same thing. And engineers will often point out flaws (and have to me plenty of times), they’re not worried about what they state anywhere near the level of the marketing folks.
… and more importantly received the full blessing of Toyota’s chairman aka Morizo. He was fully vested in the GR Corolla and was giving it a thorough shakedown in rally type conditions. It would go several times back on to the drawing board delaying production for a full year until Akio Toyoda was satisfied with it. He wanted a raw, engaging experience and that’s exactly what we got in the GR Corolla
Congrats, Jason! Reminds me of my 1991 2-door manual white Honda Civic with a 1.5L VTec engine. Loved that car. Or my bronze manual 1.8L 1989 VW Scirocco. And the shape reminds me of my 2008 2.3L black Mazda 3 hatchback. Loved that car too. Was automatic, unlike my manual white 2007 Mazda 3 sedan with white interior before that. My 2014 blue VW Golf with beige interior was my last manual.
Congrats and welcome to the GR club! I have been lightly modifying my 24' and 2 things I recommend is a pitch mount and solid shifter bushings. Super tasteful and simple mods but they make a world of difference in how the car feels!
Congratulations on the new GR Corolla. Your video has made me fall in love with the idea of buying one of these again. When I was in the market, the dealers were still tacking on $10,000+ markups.
On the topic of the 2024 model year being able to lock in the torque split, it actually can't. The torque split is really a suggestion. The computer will still vary the split and try to get it to that split based on conditions. But it often is not achieved and locked in as is suggested. Savagegeese explains it.
30/70 is the target, there is no “lock” as it’s a slipping clutch. So if you’re in first gear, or at a different rpm, the amount of torque varies, so it has to constantly adjust to that 30/70 target. But the new track mode opens that up, so it’s not constantly hunting 30/70.
@@EngineeringExplainedDespite what they say, have they done this primarily to reduce heat in the clutch pack? Overdriving seems like a nice idea but extra heat due to intentional slipping seems like an obvious downside, and I’m sure this is why Volkswagen, for example, don’t use this approach. I’m sure the slip is fine in general use, but ironically it probably causes too much heat when used on track. There are plenty of reports of this. Also, a slight aside on other systems being “on demand” - not sure which exactly you were referring to, but most these days are not actually on demand in the sense they respond only to slip. For example, the clutches in Haldex Gen 4, Gen 5 and Magna diff are engaged based on engine torque, pedal position, steering angle etc - not responsive to slip and have electric hydraulic pumps to enable clutch pressure as determined by the control unit (I.e. not reliant on slip like older Haldex units to drive hydraulic pump).
I would have liked a hand brake, but that did not make the Type R a fail. On a rwd or awd, yes. Not as much in a fwd. Drive it before you decide. Brilliant car. Not that any dealer will give you a test drive- unless it is a pre-owned example.
The GR Yaris has a mechanical handbrake which disconnects drive from the rear wheels to help you slide around sharp corners. It works very well, seems like a strange omission from the GRC.
Driven this car, gave it a thumbs up, as I was already rocking pretty powerful 3cyl at that time, so it wasn't a shocker. What made me put on "this is acceptable" face was the overall quality of it, it is very solid.
I've had my 23 Circuit edition for 1.5 years now and put nearly 40k miles on it. While I am a slight bit annoyed at the updated Torque bump, the 10 spoke rims, and others... That's nothing I can't grab in aftermarket... Before this, I had a WRX and loved that car... but it always felt like a stepping stone into something greater... This car... I hope Toyota Makes plenty more of because its a car I don't ever plan to willingly part with. IT... IS ..... AMAZING... and if you even half a quarter of a thought to get one... DO IT.
I agree. It seems to me that it’d be a better idea if the center diff was a conventional open diff by default, with the lockup clutch (and 1.007x ratio) only coming into play when the computer told it to.
It’s probably a wet clutch. Plenty of performance diffs and several AWD systems use it and you don’t hear of systemic issues with those. I’d be more worried about the multiple documented cases of engine failure both in the US and Europe. It seems that engine is particularly susceptible to LSPI, leading to catastrophic damage and even fire when LSPI knock yeets a rod through the crankcase.
I saw somewhere that the front brake vents were originally open - But in '24 they blocked them off as they cause excessive front end lifting at speed. BTW - I passed on a Blue for a White Circuit Consider an Ecutek Tune for a 'wonderful" bump at every level👍 BTW - I took mine on a 5k miles rip through the mountains. The new normal speed was between 80-90

That's an amazing amount of power from a 1.6L 3-cylinder engine. The 2.3L turbo 4-cylinder engine in my 2022 Ford Bronco gets only 15 more HP and 27 more torque (when running 93 octane), but it has an extra 0.7L and an extra cylinder!

Sidenote, for some strange reason the vent on the front fender is open on the Core. Great review, details!
I have a ‘23 Circuit Edition in Heavy Metal Grey, and I’m loving it. It definitely looks even better in person than it does in pictures. I’ve gotten lots of looks, questions at stop lights, and have even caught somebody taking a video of me driving by. A side note, (at least on my ‘23) if you look at the VIN in your windshield area, you can see a number above the VIN that is your specific model number. Mine is 802 out of the 1500 made for ‘23.
Oh, boy, the 85 mph and removing the plastic protector on one of the emblems on the door sill was both stressful and funny 🤣 Congrats on the new car. Awesome choice! I learned a lot about it. I went $13K cheaper for my favorite Warm hatch, a Mazda 3 hatchback turbo 2023. With some upgrades, specially tires, it can be very very fun to drive. It already is fun to drive to me (never as much as my ND1 Miata despite stock), and with some easy upgrades like a tune or a piggy back tuner, it can get some power and torque numbers close to the GR Corolla by just spending way below 1K on those. Both made in Japan by reliable brands with awesome quality. Love that you chose one that not only you like but also you might get to resell and lose little value because of it being a low numbers edition.
You made me laugh, Jason, with your « I won't drive it faster than 85 mph, that would be dangerous » ah ah ah ! Incredible car, incredible video ! Congratulations for purchasing such a wonderful toy !
I find it baffling people complain about GRC’s engine size and number of cylinders. 1.6 3-cylinder is somehow fragile, strung and dangerous, while a 2.0 4-cylinder is perfectly fine? Congrats on your purchase, I’ve got a 24 GR Yaris with the 8AT and absolutely love it. I only wish we also got the blue!
I don't own one of these and I'm a VW/Audi person, but Reddit feels the need to send me notifications from the GRCorolla subreddit. Often times, people have found electronic devices spliced inbetween their OBD ports. Trackers(?) installed in their vehicles for one reason or another. I wonder if your car has the same? 24:01
One of the best YT vids on the GRC but a couple important points were overlooked. The reason to buy a Circuit Edition over the lower, less expensive variants of the GRC is not only because of the much lower production numbers of the Circuit Ed that you mentioned but also, that forged carbon roof is a $15,000 part at your Toyota dealer. It is in fact the most expensive single part in the Toyota parts catalog as of this writing, even more costly then body parts for the Lexus LFA! Why does this matter? Well, think of it this way... You are able to buy a low production, handmade vehicle for only $45,000 that has technologies WAY beyond it's cost of admission. This scenario has happened before in the automotive landscape. In 2015 the Ford Mustang GT350R had a $20,000 set of carbon as standard but the upcharge over the more mundane GT350 (non-R) with standard, heavier alloy wheels was only $5000. So for $5000 you ended up with a set of $20,000 wheels (and a host of other upgrades) that shed a ton of rotating and unsprung weight. The lesson is, anyone that was given the chance to purchase a GRC Circuit or Morizo and passed will rue the day as these are the cars that will retain better long term residual values, likely enough to cover their $5000 purchase premium. I'd say it is highly probable that the blue 24' Circuit (and 23' Morizo) will be the specimens to have when these eventually become sought after collector cars in 25 years. Honda Civic Type R = FWD. Automatic disqualification as a true car freak. Jason, there is a whiff of hypocrisy calling out the VW Golf R for it's blandness after just mentioning how much you typically don't like turbocharged powerplants. Normally aspirated power is in many ways, the "Golf R" of power delivery. A bit boring. Turbocharging on the other hand is often what gives cars unique personality traits. It is one of the reasons I bought a 23' GR Corolla Circuit... I WANTED boost imperfection in a modern car. Heck, my daily driver is a 1983 Renault R5 Turbo 2. It has boost lag you can time with a egg timer. It's 185hp 1.4 liter push rod 4cyl has NOTHING below 4000 rpm and then hits like a hammer once to that mark. But since redline is only 6000rpm, you have just a 2000 rpm powerband... you find yourself VERY busy managing boost, RPM's and hammering through the gears. And even with all the imperfection, it is more fun then any of my other normally aspirated cars because it rewards the driver. When you get it right, you feel like a rally legend. Same with the GRC. When you get it right... it's a legend. Granted, a legend that weighs 1040lbs more then the Renualt. Great video and congrats on the new car purchase. ABP
What a great detailed/informative comment👍 Last fall I passed on 2 Red Cores - 1 Blue Circuit in March (was simply not a fan when I saw it in the flesh) & got a White Circuit this spring. (after a 26 month wait) If you want to smooth out the power curves - consider an Ecutek Tune. A 91 octane tune adds the "right" amount of pep to this great car. (about 10%)
Great comment! Still gonna disagree on the turbo comment. I want the go-pedal synced to my brain, no delay in any action (ev-like, it can be done with ICE, Porsche GT3 engine is prob the best example). Delay drops the connectedness imo. NA all day!
@@EngineeringExplained Yea, I see what you are saying and get where you are coming from. I should have worded it differently because, I agree with you, fast responding power-plants ARE more engaging because the "engaging" happens RIGHT NOW! So that is true. I should have stated my point differently... like this: I completely agree with you about the Golf R. It is somehow sanitized and neutered in how it goes about it's business and how it advertises it's abilities. It is understated. So I thought it odd you'd be off-put by the more manic, rags to riches personality of a turbocharged power plant. To me, what is missing from cars like the Golf R, Subaru WRX TR, and Toyota GR86 is a peaky, weird and wonderful motor. Something with personality. But apparently, Toyota is testing some waters by placing the 1.6L Turbo G16E-GTS out of the GRYaris/Corolla into the GR86 giving it the 300hp verve it needs! Funny thing is, in my herd of cars, the GR Corolla is far and away the tamest, most straight-laced thing I own. Cup holders are an unknown luxury item in my other cars, never mind "Lane Keep Assist"!
Hello, I am also a proud owner of 24 GRC CE (Blue Flame). I got the car for pretty much the same reason as you. 4WD, Blue Flame, bonkers rear wheel arches. As next step I will have 2 suggestions: - Replace the OEM brake pads with Endless SSM-Plus (If you don't plan to track your car). OEM brake pads are great but the amount of dust it produce is insane! Just take it for a joy ride and you get back with wheels covered in dust. - Get a intake mod (I went for K&N). The induction & BOV noise when shifting is addictive (This is a toy after all isn't it?)
17:00 that cover can be removed on 2024 models. it was for the 2023 air curtain vent that caused instability when the rear optional wing was installed. for the 2024, the air curtain vents were revised so you don't need those covers. the air curtain vents do not go into the engine bay at all, it is currently unused because the ducting is immediately behind that block-off cover on your car until your remove them. they're just double sided foam taped in.

As an owner of WRXs for 20 years I'm a fan of the car. I really wanted a new STI, but Subaru wanted me to buy a GR Corolla.
@@aprtur Hey @aprtur - good to know - I guess I will leave the plug in place.

I love cars built by engineers rather than by bean counters.

Completely agree with you about the lack of a mechanical hand brake on the R-type. That's an instant fail for me too.
I would have liked a hand brake, but that did not make the Type R a fail. On a rwd or awd, yes. Not as much in a fwd. Drive it before you decide. Brilliant car. Not that any dealer will give you a test drive- unless it is a pre-owned example.
A hand brake is so much better than an electronic parking brake.
DO IT.
The idea of a clutch pack that is constantly slipping sounds like inevitable erosion and eventual replacement of the part
@@ASJC27 It is definetly a wet clutch... but a wet clutch that is ALWAYS slipping. Other systems are either closed, or open. And they last.

ABP

@@EngineeringExplained Yea, I see what you are saying and get where you are coming from. I should have worded it differently because, I agree with you, fast responding power-plants ARE more engaging because the "engaging" happens RIGHT NOW! So that is true. I should have stated my point differently... like this:
I completely agree with you about the Golf R.
As next step I will have 2 suggestions:
- Replace the OEM brake pads with Endless SSM-Plus (If you don't plan to track your car). OEM brake pads are great but the amount of dust it produce is insane! Just take it for a joy ride and you get back with wheels covered in dust.
- Get a intake mod (I went for K&N). The induction & BOV noise when shifting is addictive (This is a toy after all isn't it?)

You can take the man out of the STi, but you can’t - wait this isn’t gonna sound great.

Congrats! Would be nice to see more light shined on this 85 mph limitation that keeps cropping up in Toyota GR discussions.
Because if you hit 86, you're a whole different car!
It took me about 15 minutes into reading the comments to remember the story about someone at Toyota (I’d guess Toyota US) that steadfastly denied soneone’s warranty because they had gone over 85. On a track-oriented car.
Manual Life 🫡💯🇺🇲😉
O god more clutches 🤦😂
Noted on tires. Continental is one of the Goats
I like those 1.6L small but pack a punch with that torque.
Stage 2 race clutch and flywheel will fix the clutch 😂
Aww that's the cheap carbon fiber print..... No wonder
Hi Jason, Alex from Stratified Auto here, congrats on your new GR! We are a tuning company not too far from you and would love to collaborate on a tune/build for your GR. We have had our development GR for over a year and the GR is one of our specialties.
I'm sure he has an email.
Hey Alex - Hope he does the tune & does an update video on the GR.
I posted - in it - I did suggest he consider an Ecutek tune.
(he replied to the post so he likely saw the tuning suggestion👍)
Man I had no idea how much this page blew up after all these years! Been watching you since I was in high school and I’m 27 now 😅 Glad to see you doing well 🤞🏽 You bought a really dope car!
This video is outstandingly well done! Lots of very very cool technical insight about the greatest bundle of technical delight currently available on the market for the masses. Presented in a way that perfectly matches the 3 cylinder, slightly understated, engine with tons of boost at the high end, and plenty of tech wiz to put a smile on your face even at lower rpm. And yes, the whiteboard still has its place and time. :)
“I can’t drive 85!”
One rod in the block, and one in the air
Really dislike the blacked out windows. I like to see the drivers eyes, before stepping out in front of them at a crosswalk . These newer cars all seem to have darker windows. Even when I am cycling I cannot see if anyone is sitting in the park car, so I have to cycle a good door width away to ensure I do not get doored. The idea of a window is you can see through it.
Nice to see a normal sized car for sale in North America, in lieu of a massive Truck or SUV.
I absolutely LOVE those GR Corollas! Congrats bro!
There's something about Toyota GR models. The fact car people I watch on RUclips are buying them is high praise in my eyes.
absolutely! these guys drive everything. and they know whats up. i personally didnt believe the hype until i drove one, hard.........its a special car.
I hear they added a special Easter Egg when you drive 88mph
Self imposed speed limit 84.999mph
@@totov7673lots of places in the US have speed limits under 80, even under 75. It just gets ignored
