Back in the summer of 2000, I built a squad of 5 rough riders mounted on cold one dragons. I got all the pewter parts from GW mail order: cold ones, lances, assault weapons, and riders consisting of Tallarn Desert Raider torsos and legs. Each model ended up costing about $18. The unit helped me win first prize for best army at a local tournament that summer. Despite how cool the models were, Rough Riders were nerfed in 4th Edition, and became an ineffective liability. I still have the models to today though, and use them for various skirmish-scale war games.
The Cold One Knights (or Drakespawn Knights - wetf GW is calling them currently) are some of the most fun sculpts for rough rider units! I'm working on a project currently, putting together examples of each home-brew Regiment I created with the Imperial Guard "Only War" RPG by Fantasy Flight Games. I started a couple of years ago, and then the new Astra Militarum models dropped and the project got rebooted and kicked into high gear! I've combined the Cold One, the base body of an Admech Serberry's raider plus other bits, as well as arms and gear from the new Attilan kit. I am LOVING the way this project is coming together. So much inspiration and uniqueness - I love seeing these regiments that were in my head transfer to a visible, tactile model!
Good survey of the release history; reminds me that somewhere I have a few of the generic mounted troopers and a few Atillans stashed that I want to paint in Tallarn-compatible colors
I had one lead Rogue Trader Rough Rider, on those huge plastic horses. He was armed with a Laspistol. For 2nd Edition I had two Attilan Rough Rider units, with the Lieutenant, painted to my best standard for the time. I'm really excited for the new Attilan plastics, I'm glad to see such things be redone.
What a cool look at the past! I think they've knocked it out of the park with the new Rough Rider kit: bringing some classic elements in with their new look and quality.
I have some of the 2nd Gen Attilan Roughriders and look forward to using them again (at least in OPR). The Rough Rider 401202 (Time Mark: 2:11ish) is fielding an old-school Lascannon. Great stuff and a fun walk through a lot of memories.
I love the uniformity of Rogue Trader-era Imperial Guard, the fact their cavalry are just their normal guys on horses gives them a much more unified feel - the Attilans are nice in their own way but if you were playing 2nd Ed post-1995 your army was going to be a horrible mish-mash of regiments in a way the old-school Sci Fi Guardsmen weren't (until the alternate heavy weapon teams were eventually released, anyway)
I never liked the Attilan RRs, the Tallarn however, 👍☺ I now use AOS Pistoliers for the bulk of the figure and horse, with a little modelling to provide the lance. I just use the Cadian heads on them and paint them as Cadians with extra green armour. It works for me ☺
Hi Jason. If you're asking about the Ash Wastes Guard Army Bundle, that was in Troll magazine issue 41 from June/July 2001. ruclips.net/video/aPeaMLoEpUU/видео.html
If only the rough rider heavy weapon team was a Tachanka. A Tachanka historically was a cart or wagon that had a machine gun mounted on the back. These were common in early 20th century Russia and saw their height of usage during Russian Civil War. Having Imperial guard having something similar with either a heavy bolter or lascannon mounted on a wagon would not be out of place i.ytimg.com/vi/8WNJY3WpkxA/maxresdefault.jpg

I love the old ashlands jet bikes, thanks for finding that image of them.
I have a good 20 or so tallarn rough riders, and I’m very happy they’re being brought back
"Guy in top middle" has a LasCannon! In Rogue Trader, heavy weapons were single man units.
Thanks Lee, I enjoy these nostalgia trips.
Rough Riders were still in the 8th edition index. So they were still tournament legal for quite a ways into the edition.

Great video.
The top middle rider carries a lascanon Seriously, I have those era guardsmen ☺
Top mid at 2:14 is a lascannon

Cool!
IMPERIAL GUARD! I don't care about GW's copyrights!
Whiteshields are in the game right now just fyi
I was not aware of that! Weird. At least they're no longer referring to them as "children" or "gun babies."
Where did you find that ash waste photo???
