Maria João Pires, 1996
My mother used to play this music Sunday afternoon when all the work was done...50 years ago...so beautiful and kind music...
You also will love the interpretation of Francesco Piemontesi ruclips.net/video/vRSpBjbVelo/видео.html
If there is a God to be praised is the One who made sure Maria João would be born to play Schubert.
The One who also created ears that can hear, and souls that can rise up and praise.

Maria is bringing Schubert back to life. I am listening her again and again.
One of the best interpretations of Schubert's impromptus. My respect and regards to Maria João Pires
Can sort of tell that you perform a little yourself! 😁
@@goscott444 lol ... as you (we) are
3:50-4:20 wow... I can now rest in peace!
Maria's playing is so inspirational. The sound, the touch, the phrasing.
This recording is just phenomenal!!!
This is giving me chills. I haven't been this moved by a piece of music in years. How have I gone so long without knowing about the genius that is Maria Pires? In tears.
indeed!!
Also listen to the complete Chopin Nocturnes from Pires and Brigitte Engerer. Similar engulfing effect.
Yeah the Brigitte Engerer's Chopin' Nocturnes are so beautiful!
Good for you! Have you listened to Ivan Moravec's Chopin's Nocturnes. "Live and learn." That's what Life told me. Blessings. CVD
Elizabeth Grace you are so correct, she helps me keep my sanity 😀
There is something profoundly human and also divine in every sound emanating from this pianist playing this song. I'm not sure how to explain it. But she always moves me.
Her interpretation is exquisite.
Yep
I'm not a connoisseur of classical music, or a huge fan...but even I can tell she has 'something' different because I find myself enjoying more the same tracks when they are played by her.
@@jeanlundi2141 I make your words mine... it translated very well my feeling about this wonderful musician...keep well
it is her Soul, tenderness, sweetness...
This was a superb performance of these works-just the right emotional pull too. Thank you. Ms Pires.
Thank you! Joan~♡
Mario Mario! Twoja gra jest balsamem dla duszy! Jest w niej zawarte Boskie Stworzenie-cud życia,piękno natury,świata!
Wow. I hardly ever cry. This interpretation of Schubert makes me cry. It is as beautiful as a diamond.
Wow!
I agree. Schubert brings you back to yourself, especialy when Maria Joao Pires is playing. She moves me too. She gives you peace in yourself.
Exactly so!
This is fantastic! She is telling us the whole 'story' in the clearest way,
just as if she herself has composed it...
But she didn't so don't give her that accolade. She's just pressing keys

Obrigada Maria João Pires.
I am profoundly touched by her music and her extraordinary personality. She is pure art and love.
When it comes to introspective playing nobody tops Maria. Transcendental performance...
I like the tempo and her musicality and intrepetation are brilliant. I like this interpretation over some others I have heard ,
I prefer this to the Rubinstein or Horowitz versions I have heard. Beautifully balanced between and within the hands. It's also closer to the way I aspire to interpret it (if a bit faster in places and just a bit more accurate LOL) so I may be biased! :))
It could be played slower and just as beautiful, so don't feel intimidated into not trying it yourself! It's easier than it sounds. To play the notes, at least. To get the depth out of the music that Maria João Pires gets though, that is up at another level. Brendel's version I am afraid does little for me in comparison.
I've been looking for my favourite performance of the forth one, since I'm going to play it for my music exam in a couple of weeks. And I absolutely _love_ this one, out of the 12 versions I found here on youtube. Thank you.
Johan playing schubert .... nice !
You could also try Imogen Cooper on Avie / AV2158.
Did you try the Rubinstein version?
how did it go?
I love this music. What a beautiful interpretation. Thank you for posting.
Perfect touch, perfect phrasing, perfect tone -- it doesn't get any better.
There is no limit to how the "interpretation' can evolve. At a certain point there is not better or worse, just different kind of beauty. Like different planets that have their own beauty not to be compared
Playing makes my comments superfluous.
Totally agree!
Sergey Prokofiev agreed
Watch Horowitz version and see now can It get better
Me alone , I must have watched this video 500 times
The opening of the C minor seems to set us off on a road of incredible sadness, like a journey which has no destination. What was Schubert thinking when he wrote this wonderful piece?
omg, i thought that Zimerman's interpretation could not be topped. This is fantastic.
bravo maria joao.... keep playing, please.... always..

What an interesting piece (the C minor) for my teacher to give me. I thought, what is this little ditty? I'm far beyond this! Well, no...I wasn't. Such precision and detail necessary to learn and perform, immense beauty tucked away to be discovered, a great way to begin to really get to know Schubert. No "just plowing through" allowed. My, how I love Franz Schubert! And thank you, dear teacher, Robert Smith, may you rest in peace.
I think this can be achievable only if you’re in peaceful state of mind and relaxed. She is completely with the music.. so convincing and elegant and moving. Absolutely a miracle .
The same applies to listening: Late night, tired and quiet mind and the emotion will flow fully. Inner dialogue interferes with connection.
Astonishing performance, one of the best ever heard of Schubert's Impromptu Op. 90.
Calm, perfect, and full of energy yet!
Love her rendition best among all the versions I've listened to.
Schubert's soul will delight herself ... he died at 31 years, without knowing the fame that absolutely belongs to him... he is listening to her smiling through his tears ...
In a mucked- up world, this performance is a kind of redemption. Pires plays# 4 so well, you don’t want her to end. Thrilling, moving, subtle, and profound. All you can do is murmur thanks,
interpretare profundă plina de sensibilitate.
Most pianists normally would rush Schubert’s impromptu thru as if there is no tomorrow. How wrong are these people.
Impromptu usually means the song is written at the moment to describe something beautiful...
Song? Who is the singer?
Haha song! What an idiot
One of my most favorite music! I love Schubert.
Schubert died way too young, but what beautiful gifts he'd left behind for us. And Maria plays soooooo beautifully.
247 dislikes and not a single insightful comment from the naysayers. . . And yet -- the changes of temperament she brings to each section of no. 4 and then the shifts of mood within sections, her rubato suited to the harmonic and rhythmic turbulence, the affecting calm before foreboding climax, and the welcome return of the opening which I greedily want to go on and on . . .
Schubert is the most tragic premature death in the history of humanity. Art adds beauty to the world. Schubert would have added imensely
Her wonderful and inspiritual and graceful performance is the cat’s pajamas

I'he heard these pieses so many times that I know every tone. But Maria's interpretation opened me a new depth of feeling and new vision. As if I listen to this music for the first time! Huge thanks and deepest bow !
Absolutely regarding the "depth" - exploring the limits of pianissimo is where magical things happen.
This is so beautiful and if you listen well you can feel some of the dark hidden movements of Schubert
Really intimate. Hugely impressed by the pensive first impromptu. It came alive as really belonging with the other three in the set, in a way which I hadn't appreciated before, even though I've tried to develop a pensive approach to it myself. This gives me the impetus to let it emerge of its own accord.
Thank you for sharing.

I agree that it is an exceptional interpretation for the first one. In a way I felt that I understood it for the first time

Maria João Pires interpretation is one of my favorites! Lovely! Just Lovely!
So much delicateness, preciseness, on the one hand heartwarming, on the other hand forceful. I am stunned, didn’t know this pianist yet.Love it..
Espressione sentita e profonda , leggera ed intensa meravigliosa interpretazione
Superbe. Merci Madame. Quelle sensibilité.
Una MARAVILLA. La obra y la interpretación. Para disfrutar
Awesome. It makes my anxiety be nothing. Beauty saves me.
Her performance is magical and soulful . ❤❤Beautiful .💕💕
Her playing is just exquisite!

The best Schubert interpretation I ever listened
I encourage you to listen to Richter working miracles on D960 & D894 - I'm hooked!
I have her schubert cd but I have become very fond of Radu Lupu and his interpretation also
These exquisite Impromptus have the soul of lieder throughout. I can’t help but think of Winterrrise and other Schubert lieders. And of course, Maria Joao Pires brings out the best in these deeply moving and contemplative pieces!
Musicality reigns over technique. Beautiful.
What's wrong about the technique?
Ego and Technique obscures intimacy but it does well for Liszt.
The Impromtu No.4 in A-flat Major, well done, with that right hand glissando-like progression pattern.
i LOVE Mozart and Bach but after those great Masters, there is Schubert as the third great composer
I played No. 3 when I was younger. One of my favorites... Beautiful performance.
Una interpretacion magnífica. Una maravilla. Agradecida a Maria Joao Pires
Pires's interpretation of No. 3 is magnificent - very similar to Brendel's (More Brendel: Schubert Op. 90/3), which is my favourite.

ALFRED BRENDEL. CLIFFORD CURZON? Nobody like LIPATTI, believe me.

***** Do not feel bad...even Beethoven did not accomplish what Schubert had done by the time he was 31 (1801). He had written the first symphony and the opus 13 piano sonata by then, but...

The photograph used in this vid captivates me. The way she emerges from the darkness with her hands cradling a face glowing with intelligence, patience, and inquisitiveness. I'm sold. I don't even care what it is she's holding (e.g., a blankey, scarf, whatever).

???? Schubert!!
if she's wearing a blankey she's got us all sold too. She's just transcendental as a true musician should be. Not a machine, with only amazing technique, but can actually play with emotion.
BRAVO !!!
Ela é simplesmente genial ! Obrigado por tamanha beleza!!
Maria João Pires. Ponto final.
Perfect songs to read the subjective forms of the clouds and to follow with a tender eye the grooves of the stems of the trees; appreciate the complex writing of the nested branches, taste the colors of the decomposition of light into water droplets in a garden, and strongly feel the wet soil of ancestral forest to perceive the traces of animals from deep past 🦕
