Mme Pires chooses a slow tempo for this piece, within which she creates the most limpid performance ever recorded, especially in the opening allemenade. Bach at his dreamiest.
it's not all about how loud you can bang those keys on the piano...how faster than jet you can dance on the piano..but how you can touch the souls for the listeners...this recording is the best example for that
Bach pierces the soul with a pure and radiant light. He distills the truth and beauty of life into music. Not a remote, unapproachable beauty, but the warm embrace of a love that is the longing of every human heart. No matter what other great music I listen to, Bach moves me to my core everytime. He is my visionary teacher, kind comforter, and cherished friend for life. How fortunate we are to have him! Oh, and kudos to MJP for this fine interpretation 🙂
Exquisite words in the praise of the one who was called the pillar of classical music... without whom the music would probably have been different... And the three describing words you used for him - truth, beauty and love - unveils the source of his greatness: biblical faith, for whom he also was known. And he lived in a musical age when composition seemed to be strait-laced by many laws of which, in the following evolution of music, composers got rid more and more, searching a "liberty" which got to the nowadays "no laws" music... A music which seems void of the same truth, beauty and love. So we can add these other words to his music: order, laws, peace, righteousness. Be blessed!
My fav French Suite No. 2 for sure. And I have Glenn Gould version. Different mostly, but I prefer the sheer beauty of Maria’s playing. Hope one day I get to hear her life. BTW due to this very video, I bought her box set!
Maravilhoso!
this is the first time I've come across a performance by Maria Pires! oh where have I been all my life? this is the kind of interpretation I like! She is truly a wonderful pianist! Thanks for your wonderful job!
Those of you who say that Bach wrote solely or specifically for the harpsichord are misinformed. His works are referred to as "keyboard" works because they are precisely that: works written for "keyboard" which is a general term that includes the harpsichord, clavichord, organ, and in modern times, the piano. Thus, Bach intended for his music to be played on whichever instrument the musician had available. During Bach's lifetime, the average musician could not afford a harpsichord and most likely had a clavichord in his or her home. Thus, Bach's music was most likely played on a clavichord and not a harpsichord the majority of the time. It is important to note that a clavichord is a touch sensitive instrument like the modern piano. Furthermore, Bach went out of his way to make use of new and innovative instruments, and he made an effort to maximize the potential of such instruments though his compositions. I personally believe that Bach would have greatly appreciated the modern piano, and not have not only played his "keyboard" works for it, but would have also composed for it.
I agree , bach it' s " hits music only " . much composers stole him Schumann ,Liszt , Rachmaninov , Debussy ... U can play him with all instruments , in symphonic ,in chamber, in jazz (Loussier) , in jazz vocal ( swingle singers), in hard rock (with electric guitar)... when I was younger I even add tehno hardcore basses on the toccata and fugue in D minor , and it was still a master piece the only composer that you recognise with 3 notes (maybe with chopin) .
I'm sure Bach would have loved to play his composition on modern pianos. If I remember correctly, Bach played on early prototypes of the pianoforte around 1730 but didn't like it. Those early versions of pianoforte didn't sound very nice and didnt allow a lot (if any) of nuances. However he played it again toward the end of his life, and this time he was satisfied with the sound and mechanism. From there pianofortes only got better, and and evolved into modern pianos which are even better !
discotanzo My understanding of Bach and early proto-pianos is that he did get to try one and didn’t entirely hate it. But then someone tried to cheat him out of money over one. Being the sort of man he was, he promptly swore to never play a piano again. And apparently he never did.
Beautifully played. Perhaps, my favorite version of this suite of all the ones I've heard. I like the tempo and all the intricate details which she so masterfully performs with lovely elegance and feeling.
Pires always manages to bring out that little spark of magic that makes ALL the difference. It's uncanny. She touches the piano and... "it's aliiiive!"
20 years ago I listened to this performance and I was blown by the sheer beauty of it. I could not be grateful enough for having introduced me to the wonderful universe of classical music and more specifically, Bach's music. You touched my soul forever. Thank you Maria.
I enjoyed this performance very much. I consider it is indeed very inspirated, musical, the interpretation very classy and full of details that require a focused and precised preparation.Maria Joao has done an amazing job with this suite, and there is no doubt she is a magnificent artist, on the top tier of all pianists!! thanks for sharing this.
Those of you who pretend to be intellectual by making absurd comments on which instrument Bach's keyboard works are played need to get your noses out of your asses and stop being so cynical. Using your ill conceived logic or lack thereof contemporary pianists should not play Beethoven's or Liszt's, et al works on modern pianos. If I remember correctly both composers/performers routinely broke pianos of their day.
Maria!
Thanks a lot. A very romanticized interpretation. There is a lot of light and purity in her performance. This is a different Bach, but he is very cheerful, sweet, gentle and friendly. I like this life-affirming natural harmony, not squeezed into strict academic grandiloquence.
In terms of mood, this interpretation has much in common with the interpretation of Tatiana Nikolaeva -- my favorite Bach interpreter: ruclips.net/video/PgRhBB90R8E/видео.html
Regarding the "beauty of the Allemande", I prefer the beauty of every single Sarabande Bach composed in these French Suites. All 6 of them ,but especially the ones in the minor modes are exceptional.
I would argue the Allemande comes more easily to the ear, but that's just me. When it comes to Bach it's difficult to even appreciate it without getting bored for the uncultured ear, so naturally most of us just come to love everything once we hear it enough. But that Allemande is like a piece that you can listen to while closing your eyes and pretending to be staring at the ceiling of the Sistine chapel.
What an eloquent, sensitive and at the same time, gutsy rendering of this remarkable suite. I wish the old boy were alive now to enjoy Ms Pires and the modern piano. They say as much as two-thirds of JSB's music has been lost over the years but, if so, I doubt whether any of it would have exceeded this.
bravo maria joao.... keep playing, please.... always.. “To be great, be whole; Exclude nothing, exaggerate nothing that is not you. Be whole in everything. I only started exploring Pires' recordings of Bach recently but I am immediately won over. The articulation, the dynamic contrast, so precise yet so expressive ... just a supreme sense of balance from start to finish. What else can I say? Some of the best Bach I've ever heard in my life.
There are no adequate words in any human language to express the beauty of the opening Allemande
I fully agree with you. Especially when one listens to this masterful interpretation.
MrAdKam
It's just perfect in every conceivable way.
I agree but there is no need to express in any other language what is already perfectly expressed in music.

Ein sehr einfühlsamer aber gleichzeitig klarer Klang. Genau das, was man für Bach braucht. Tolle Interpretation!

I prefer Pires in this piece to andras schiff despite his fame as a Bach interpreter. She conveys the Bach spirit like no one else
i find the tempo and tone really quite perfect. healing for the tired and sorrowful heart
The French Suite No 2 Allemande
can be played at my Funeral - Maria Pires or Slatislav Richter, I don't mind which. Tragic, objective, beautiful.
Just discovered this performer. She presses all my joy buttons at once. Thank you for publishing.
One of my preferred performances of Bach's French suite 2. Just a beautiful sound throughout played by an excellent pianist.
The allemande here is one of his most beautiful pieces
except that I find myself saying that about so many of Bach's pieces.
Playing for and not at us, as is her usual :)

Wonderful. Thank you very much.
