Playing on this level can only come from an intimacy with the keyboard that very few pianists ever achieve. One must have an innate musical sense as well as fingers that extend to the point of escapement as the note sounds. As many realize, his playing is intensely meaningful. So meaningful that the listener is drawn into the music as if listening to the voice of God.
The last one is my favorite. My dad studied music very seriously all through childhood and college, and then became and engineer. He still played at home on his own time, and I used to sit under the piano and listen to him play. This one of my very favorite pieces of music. I love the way Radu Lupu plays, in addition, so expressive, but I first came to this music via my dad.
My first recording of the Op 90 impromptus was Kempff and then got the Perahia which I really liked. I also got Schnabel (excellent), Imogen Cooper and Brendel. After hearing Lupu (part of the Decca box set) I've stopped looking.
Rest in peace Master Lupu (I had some years to listen in a live concert, when he just played one of these Shubert impromptus in the Budapest MÜPA concert hall, so I feel si lucky! 🌹
Thank you for your comment. You are really lucky: because you listened to Radu Lupu and saw him playing the piano and because you live in one of the most wonderful cities I know: Budapest!
Dumnezeu sa-l odihneasca!
This particular music almost brings my breath to a stop- it is that powerful.Love hearing this familiar music from my childhood, having had 2 musicians in the family while growing up, around 70 yrs. Ago.
I came to Lupu late in life, his and mine and he has captured my heart. Times being what they are my interior soundtrack is all Brahms Schubert and Beethoven. Thanks
I have to sit six hours on a train in order to get classical music cds. So when I visit Tower records in Dublin, I always make sure to buy 15 to 20 cds on each visit. In Cork, we only have Golden Discs... fine for Ed Sheeran records, but not for classical lovers, or indeed for heavy metal lovers. I hope to find Radu Lupu and Alfred Brendel cds on my next visit !
Jyh shyong Lin It is never too late for love (specially for loving Schubert) ! You probably entered immediatly more deeply in this pieces than if you had been much younger. As I was kid, I didn't understand this pieces so well, I think.
No. 1 in C minor - Allegro molto moderato 0:00 No. 2 in E flat major - Allegro 10:35 No. 3 in G flat major - Andante 15:11 No. 4 in A flat major - Allegretto 21:40
"In June 1982, Lupu made a critically acclaimed recording of Schubert's Impromptus (D. 899 & 935). John Rockwell wrote in The New York Times that Lupu's "singing tone here must be heard to be believed. Without belittling the other facets of Schubert's musical personality, he captures the composer's songful essence with a rare beauty - and, in so doing, he reaffirms once more the ability of present-day performers to do ample justice to the music of the past."[37] In addition, Gramophone said about the recording:[38] To all eight pieces he brings insights all his own betokening acute awareness of the visionary in Schubert, while as piano playing pure and simple it could scarcely be lovelier in phrasing or tone. When first confronting this return to already over-recorded pieces my immediate reaction, I confess, was Why yet another? I now realize the catalogue would not have been complete without the viewpoint of so dedicated a Schubertian." from Wiki....so, possibly 1982?

Very nice comment, thank you!
In my opinion, Schubert's music provides the ultimate test of a musician's spirituality and musicality. Radu Lupu scores very high on both measures.
Thanks a lot for this comment!
Only hearing the Impromptu No. 1 Radu Lupu seems for me to be the most expressive and most impressive player.
Rest in Peace Master Lupu

I really appreciate your comment. I agree with you, he "told" Schubert's music to us.

Bravo ! The young wiz bang pianists of today should listen to what true art really is . His technique serves the music not the other way around

Thanks. I'm glad this post has made you so pleasant memories.
Lupu's Lyrical Impromptus is one of the bests of all time.
If you want to hear lyrical, you should hear Radu Lupu play Beethoven's Waldstein Sonata. It is on You Tube also.
He won a Grammy for it.
Brilliant playing.
Alas, Radu Lupu is no longer with us.
He is much missed.
R.I.P. great man

Can there be music more beautiful than Schubert's and in the interpretation of the best among the best! Radu Lupu!!!
VERY PLESANT SOUNDIG PIANO !

R.I.P Lupu
Sublime! Un grand poète!
Perceptive comment, couldnt agree more. And you hear every note with absolute clarity.
His performance of No 1 is stellar. He marches through triumphantly, really emphasizes those chords more than other pianists I've heard. Lovely.
Thank you!
Thank you for this nice comment and for appreciating Radu Lupu's inimitable performance.

Lupu is one of my most favorite pianists. I love his sdchubert, especially second one.
riposa in pace amico mio
I don't know how he does it, but he really takes it to another level.
Thank you! Perhaps he, having great artistic potential, felt the music, "saw" the music and "reimagined" it.
Mare pianist! Superba interpretate a"Impromtuurilor"lui Schubert, poetica!!
Odihneasca-se in pace! Silvia Baciu🙏

Simply sublime - unforgettable.

Outstanding and with such dedication and expression. As if he were playing for Schubert. My favorite.
Nice comment. Thank you!

To listen to Lupu is not and will never be too late.

Good luck on your next visit! I buy CDs online from "Presto Music". Prices are reasonable.
A brief but exact interpretation of a masterpiece of Schubert
D899-2
This is not a small piece
This includes a whole universe
Your comment is wonderful! Thank you!

So nice and his touch............greetings from Utrecht
Thank you!
You’re so lucky to touch this since childhood. As a Taiwanese in Asia , I came to this piece at the age of 60 years old.
really? asians learn this piece at the age of 9-12. i learned this at 10.
Jyh shyong Lin It is never too late for love (specially for loving Schubert) ! You probably entered immediatly more deeply in this pieces than if you had been much younger. As I was kid, I didn't understand this pieces so well, I think.
@@urnice4172 no they don't? Most aren't any good like as anywhere and tiger moms force them so they never have real meaning to the pieces
Never it is to late. I learned about Radu Lupu only today, at 78.
Cómo se puede tener tanto sentimiento? Casi hace llorar.
Lupu: magistral!
Great performance by the great musician--RADU LUPU !
Thank you!
Such delicacy !
More romantic than Beethoven in many ways.
Love these interpretations of the Op. 90 Impromptus!!!
Me too! Thanks!
Fraseggio chiarezza e forza superlativi virtuoso ma musicista
Thank you for appreciating Radu Lupu's performance.

Thank you very much!

He will play for ever immortal music with Franz, Wolfgang, Ludwig, Johannes, Robert,..........in front of God
I hope he now enjoys hearing so many warm words from his listeners.
el mejor!
To state the obvious, this is one of the great recordings of these pieces. Lupu and Schubert were both geniuses. (Schubert somewhat more so).
Thank you! I agree with you, Radu Lupu had Schubert in his soul and always "told us Schubert's stories" in a unique way.

His vertical sonority is beautiful, but his musical line and direction do not transport the listener further than admiring the superb piano-playing.
G flat major much too slow. This one is played too slow my most pianists, despite the double alle breve indication.
