I deer hunt with a 7mag, have for years.
That being said, a 243, 270, and 7mag will do anything and everything you want. 243 probably being the most versatile.

25-06 is what I started with for a do all. Cater the bullet to what you are after. I personally found Barnes tsx went through everything. Two holes spraying blood. It would not blow up fur, and it killed everything I shot. When the ttsx came out, I stepped up to it. It has proper expansion at a little lower velocity, thereby extending my range. I can shoot everything with that one bullet.

2506 is an awesome round. I wish more rifles were available in that caliber

For a new hunter who wants a quality factory rifle without paying too much I recommend:
    - Tikka T3x Lite
    - Browning X-bolt hunter
If you identify as a one gun fudd and you think you will only want 1 versatile rifle to do it all from targets to varmints to deer to elk to moose… consider these readily available cartridges:
    - 7mm-08 Remington
    - 308 Winchester
    - 6.5 PRC
    - 270 Winchester
    - 7mm REM Mag
Honestly, if you are new and this is your first hunting rifle the 308 and the 708 are a great choice… excellent for both hunting and high volume training. Then when you catch the bug and want a second rifle it can be a larger cartridge like 280AI or 7RM or 300WSM for larger game and longer range.
    Cheers!

I hear you that a 300WM is a lot of gun for whitetail deer… no doubt… But!
If you have one… you are golden… load that sucker up with 130gr or 150gr Barnes TTSX bullets and you have yourself a damn fine deer round that shoots flat AF. These copper mono bullets can handle the 3200-3400fps velocity and have low enough SD… very appropriate for deer.
Last year I took a nice buck with 300WM 150gr TTSX with a 7” dia. maximum point blank range of 320m (350yd)… point and shoot.

I guess I’m just getting old. I grew up in the PA Mountains, and took lots of big deer 250-350 yards at significant angles due to elevation variables with 270s, 308s, 30-06 with Walnut Stocks and 10x fixed glass. $4k? 5k? +? $700-900 rifles are amazing and good Leupold glass is not expensive. No need to spend more than $700, but of course you can. Regardless of what you shoot, shooting 250 yards + depends on the nut behind the trigger. At the range I go to here in S Florida goes out to 600 yds. I see a lot of $5-10k kits in the 100yd range, while my wife rings steel on the 600yd targets with her $800 Bergara 308 $700 Leupold setup. You can always spend lots of money, but doesn’t mean you get a better tool. Btw, i love hearing about everyones rifles that shoot 1000 yards. In whose hands? And my wife’s Bergara is just under 10 lbs. Shes 125, and ive never once heard her bitch about humping her rifle through the woods.

I agree with you 100% Im getting old too. I should clean out my gun safe and toss all of my 3006,308,300Win Mag, 223 rifles in the trash , regardless of how well they shoot , how many one shot kills they have made , how many sub MOA groups they have shot (and still do ) because some guy on a blog says they are cheap and useless. My opinion is if you have 7000.00 to spend on a rifle you are extremely wealthy and have more money than common sense or your daddy is paying for it. I own 2 rifles that cost a little over 1000.00 A Rock River LAR-8 in useless 308 Win and a Winchester Model 70 Alaskan in 338 Win Mag. Both tack drivers.

This channel has made the point that rifle problems are usually in the shooter. And I agree. I have watched Texas Plinking 1 MOA at 1k yards challenge. Good shooters with not expensive guns get hits. A young guy with a refurbished M1 Garand.
Another guy with a Savage rifle.
Others with custom builds have problems. They are lucky to get 1 MOA dispersion. Especially as the south Texas wind will make you it's red-headed step-child.
As for an everything rifle, I have always liked .308 but I now have a 7 PRC. It will be my everything rifle. I can hunt up to mule deer. Probably elk, if I can get there.

Shop around--a lot of customs can be had for 1200-1800 second hand, or find a custom that doesn't look like 2024 and it will be cheaper. I found a Lazzeroni a few years ago for 2k--it was over 7k new. I've killed mule deer, white tail, hog, Aoudad, with that rifle. I do like suppressors and short barrels though...

Yes that’s what google will tell you.
Fact is , it’s something in the middle.
Ease of understanding I classify it in the short action magnum category.

Love the podcast have been diving into your podcasts a lot lately. I was wondering why I don’t ever hear you mention Christensen rifles? They seem to be in stock in a lot of stores and I own a MPR in 300 win. I don’t have a lot of experience shooting long range but have it as a universal hunting rifle to do it all. Why might you or other people be pushed away from these rifles?

Man I own a Ruger American a savage 110 and a cva bolt. but in that price range I'd buy a cva cascade every time right now. Better stock, better trigger, better barrel, better gun. If I want amo info I tend to go to Ron spooner for info.
