  • ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter was a theater-in-the-round attraction that opened at Disney’s Magic Kingdom on June 20th, 1995. In this episode we take a look at the attraction’s origins as a ride inspired by the movie Alien, the changes it went through during planning and development and its closure in 2003.

Wait a minute, are you Michael Eisner? *THE* Michael Eisner who ironically helped and hurt Disney throughout the 20 years? Well once you left Disney, they bought Marvel, Lucasfilm and FOX, Disney got over $3 billion their animated films have become Oscar winning masterpieces, the Disney Parks have become even better and so much more!

You had a great run, and some great ideas, probably could've used just a bit more help but hindsight is always 20/20. If only you didn't start second guessing yourself after Euro Disneyland and shorting on investments in the park when Disney's premise, dating back to Walt, was to never skimp out on the each land's Imagineering so they never seemed like shoddy amusement parks. Yet then you made California Adventure and the eyesore of Dinoland USA. Should've fully committed to Beastly Kingdom, and I personally wish you pushed Disney's America more. Having to only drive 2 hours to the Mananas area versus having to fly 2 hours to Orlando makes a DVC membership and visiting annually seem way more doable, even on a "Ramen for dinner" college budget.

I worked there in 2001, and it was so cool! My favorite position was "catwalk", where we were part of the show when we tried to connect the power. It was also a scary position, bc it's very dark and LOUD up there, with the speakers right next to your ears. You're in complete dark, with the alien sounds right up on you! Then, at a certain point, you have to turn your helmet lights off so you could run out before the big BOOM noise from the speakers, or your ears were really effed! (Yes we had ear plugs... But wouldn't so much if we didn't get out in time!)

@Trend101Warrior I feel like if anything, it'll be more action-oriented, and less horror oriented. Aliens (1986) leaned way more into action than it's 1979 predecessor. I feel like now that Disney owns the Alien franchise, they'll take it in that direction.

I think it would have lasted longer in it's original form if it was placed at Hollywood Studios, it could have possibly fit better in with the theming (dress it up a sci-fi/horror movie where you're the star).
Honestly I think this type of attraction would have done so much better at Universal, with the type of attractions they were creating (Kong/Jaws), an Alien inspired ride would have fit in perfectly in the 90's at the park.

It would have been open for years. The wrong thing about this attraction was its placement. Before that, I think there was a 360 degree theater, a circular movie screen with many natural and colorful films that made you just relax and enjoy. Disney rides are about relaxing, not having a heart attack Lol

I rode this game in the 90's and was easily under 10 when I rode it. Can confirm this ride was terrifying as a child but was far from traumatizing. Left the theater laughing and talking to my friends about the experience. Its sad that it is no longer around. Glad I was able to watch this again and get a more in depth look at the story since as a child I totally missed what exactly was going on. Just that there was now a monster alien "roaming" around us XD

I'm not usually one to get butt-hurt over the closure of Disney attractions, but this one has always bothered me. Especially since it was so short-lived. I would have loved to experience it once more. I thought it was a perfect fit for Tomorrowland, never understood why there wasn't room for at least one extremely frightening ride there.

Alien Encounter was one of the best attractions! And I’m an of Disney purist lol. Alien Encounter fit so well with the 90s Tomorrowland, that land had a great cohesive theme. It’s a shame that version of Tomorrowland is slowly disappearing. I definitely think Alien Encounter was ahead of its time.. I miss this attraction SO MUCH!!! I was there for the early version of this attraction, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. When I came back around to it some years later, and they changed it to Stitch's Alien Encounter or what ever,I was disappointed. But I love Stitch. I just wish they never changed the formula of the attraction.

I think I’ve been on the ride 3 times in total and it still to this day is my favorite Theme Park ride experience.

Now that Disney bought Fox they should bring this ride back and use the queen Xenomorph or use the original alien that they used in the old ride.

@@ChampionofLight2 Just bring back S.I.R. They don't have to bring back the entire attraction, just bring back S.I.R. and make him a friendlier, still-somewhat-sinister character in a hands-on exhibit in Tomorrowland.

I never got the hate for Eisner. If you look at all the amazing things that was developed under his leadership, it's actually really impressive. Unlike Iger, he actually wanted New things instead of just purchasing already existing franchises. The entire disney renessaince and a lot of great attractions happened because of Eisner.

Still glad they made me go on it though as it really was groundbreaking, but kind of hard to enjoy flying on Dumbo after truly believing an alien almost just ate you and 100 other people in a theater.

I think he's what started my love for evil robots. I got a plush Skippy and a 3-pack action figure set of S.I.R., Skippy, and the alien from the gift shop afterwards. Still have S.I.R., I display him proudly in my room.

I've been on that simulation when I was in sixth grade. I went on it with my sister, my best friend, his sister, and our parents. My best friend asked my mom to hold him, his sister was visibly shaking for at least an hour, my sister dug her nails into my hand. I was scared too, but a laughing hysterical scared. I still remember it vividly and it's around 25 years ago.

I was in my mid-20s when I experienced this attraction, and it was absolutely terrifying. It was awesome! There were tons of huge signs warning parents that it's probably too intense for young children. Well, parents ignored the warnings, and because of their need to experience everything in the park ruined it for everyone else. It was more scary than any roller coaster or thrill ride I had ever experienced. My friends went back on it, I waited for them.

Holy crap I was 5 when I went to this!! My parents surprised with a Disney trip in Orlando and the sign outside said no kids so since I didn't have anyone else to stay with them let me in with my parents. I sat down next to them and found the aliens kinda cute that's until I freaked out when the lights turned out and got splattered with green blood I guess. I couldn't stop crying when I got out and I can assure that ruined my trip to Disney. Especially when we got out and it started to rain heavily. I still remember it clearly.

This ride was one of the most amazing rides I have ever ridden at ANY Theme Park ever! And I was 10 years old when I rode it. It was the brand new ride that I HAD to get on. It was terrifying and I LOVED every second of it. My family was petrified by it but we all enjoyed it. My grandma thought my aunt was taken because she could see her sitting right next to her. My cousin (who was in his 30s) freaked so bad he literally broke the harness and ducked through the end of it. My uncle screamed like a small child. And me, my aunt and my cousin (all 10-11 years old at the time) had nightmares from this thing. And it is STILL the best theme park attraction I’ve ever done. Hands down!!! AMAZING!!!

Fun fact about this ride! I rode this when I was about 9. No CM warned my parents about how scary it was. After the ride was over, I fell into shock and actually stopped breathing for about 10 seconds. First responders came to help me and my parents and then I got a Mickey bar! Although it scared the life out of me, this is one of my favorite rides to date.
